Apple iOS 7: Tips and tricks

CUPERTINO: Apple's new iPhones and iOS 7 operating system for mobile devices are packed with new features, although not of all them are readily apparent. I've had a chance to learn a few tricks in the week I spent with both the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S, which come with iOS 7 installed.

Here are five things to know if you download the software on one of Apple's older mobile devices starting Wednesday or buy a new iPhone starting Friday. The update is available for free for the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 models, the iPad 2 and later, the iPad Mini and the iPod Touch released last year. You'll need about 3 gigabytes of free storage.

Tip one: Control Center and Swipes
Many of the improvements added to iOS 7 are delivered after swiping from various edges of the screen. This redesign is meant to make it easier to navigate, but there is no guide for knowing when and how to swipe. Fortunately, you can still use an iPhone the traditional way, by tapping on an icon or button, even if you don't learn all the new ways to swipe.

As a general rule of thumb, keep swiping from various edges to see what happens. If you discover something neat, remember it for next time. Swiping may produce different results if you're in the lock screen, the home screen or an app.

Here's a guide to the basic swipes:

*From the lock screen, swipe up from the bottom right corner to access the camera. This is a holdover from iOS 6.

*Whether locked or unlocked, swipe up from anywhere else along the bottom edge to get the Control Center. It gives you easy access to frequently accessed settings such as Airplane Mode and Wi-Fi. It also gets you to key apps such as the flashlight feature and the clock, for timing how long the turkey needs to be in the oven. There's a volume control, but only for audio and video playback. You need the volume buttons for the ringer and alerts.

*Swipe down from the top edge to get the Notification Center. You'll see the day's highlights, including the weather, appointments and stock quotes. Tap on "All" or "Missed" near the top to get recent notifications from Gmail, Facebook and other services.

*Swipe down from anywhere else on the screen to get a search box.

*From various Apple apps, try swiping from the left or the right. Not every app will respond, but many will. With the Safari browser, for instance, you can use the left and right swipes in place of the back and forward buttons.

Tip two: Organizing and sharing photos
The new Photos app organizes your photos into moments, based on when and where you took the photos. Several moments will be grouped into a collection, such as a vacation to Europe. Collections will then be grouped by year. It's all automated, so you can't reorganize shots if you would rather break a collection into two. But it's better than having hundreds of unorganized photos.

From any moment, collection or year, click on the header on top of the photos to pull out a map showing all the places you've been, with the number of shots taken at each. You can share entire moments, by hitting "Share" on the right side of that header. A menu should pop out from the bottom. It's tricky because it's easy to miss and hit "Select" above it instead.

Once you have the moment or set of photos chosen, another menu will pop out from the bottom, giving you such choices as sharing by email, Facebook, Flickr or text messaging.

Tip three: Ask Siri
Frustrated with Siri's inability to hear what you're trying to say? Instead of repeating yourself over and over, you can click "tap to edit" to make the change manually. You shouldn't have to with voice search, but fixing one letter is still easier than having to type in the entire phrase.

Just for fun, you can give Siri a sex change by going to the settings, choosing "General," then "Siri," then "Voice Gender." You can now use Siri to change phone settings and return recent calls. And Siri will speak out turn-by-turn directions when walking. Before, the vocal instructions were limited to driving directions in Maps.

Tip four: Freebies
Apple's new streaming music service, iTunes Radio, is easy to find. Click on the Music icon at the bottom of each home screen, then choose "Radio" at the bottom. Create music stations by choosing some genres you like. Then fine-tune your picks by hitting the star when a tune is playing. You can ask the service to play more songs like it or remove that song from future playlists entirely. You can also create new stations based on specific songs or artists. The service will try to find other songs like them.

Best of all, it's free. Just prepare to put up with some ads, unless you subscribe to Apple's iTunes Match for $25 a year.

Meanwhile, you might qualify for some free apps - Pages for word processing, Numbers for spreadsheets, Keynote for presentations, iPhoto for photo editing and iMovie for movie editing. They usually cost $5 or $10 each. To qualify, you need to buy a new iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. The offer is retroactive to Sept. 1. Once a new device is activated, the app can be downloaded for free to other devices on the same account, as long as the device is upgraded to iOS 7.

Tip five: Fingerprinting
With the new fingerprint ID system on the iPhone 5S, there's no longer a reason to avoid protecting your phone with a passcode. I know passcodes can be very disruptive. I've often lost my train of thought before I could get to an app to jot something down. But your fingerprint now bypasses the need to type in a four-digit code in many situations.

It's easy to set up. The iPhone will walk you through scanning one finger when you set up the phone. You can scan four more fingers - yours or someone else's - by going to the settings. Go to "General," then "Passcode & Fingerprint."

I'm still confronted with passcode screens, especially when I need to authenticate an app purchase. It took me a few days to realize that even though you're asked for a passcode, the fingerprint usually works unless the phone specifically tells you otherwise.

One more thing: The screen needs to be on for the fingerprint sensor to work. To save a step, just press on the home button firmly and let the button pop back up. But keep your finger lightly touching the button's surface. The hard press will activate the screen, and the light touch will unlock the phone.

Browsing the Web with The Onion Router, or Tor, is supposed to make you anonymous. Many of the encryption algorithms used by this popular Internet anonymizing protocol have likely been cracked by the NSA, says one security expert – and upgrading to the newest versions of Tor software won’t be enough to protect your privacy.
There's still much we don't know about the NSA's reported ability to circumvent online encryption. The Sept. 5 articles by The New York Times and The Guardian are light on details, but they suggest that the NSA has cracked a significant portion of the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), the encrypted protocol that oversees the connection between your browser and the websites it displays.
That means 76 percent of Tor's supposedly anonymous network traffic might be crackable by the NSA, according to the findings of security expert Robert Graham, the CEO of Errata Security.

However, Roger Dingledine of the Tor Project told Tom's Guide that Graham's findings may be due to the sudden spread of a Tor-based botnet, or hidden network of malware-infected computers.
Tor is a networking protocol originally sponsored by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. Now an open-source project, the protocol is used in various pieces of software, including the Tor Project's free-to-download browser bundle, which anonymizes your data by sending it through a random selection of more than 3,000 servers, called relays.
These relays are run by volunteers around the globe. Each relay decrypts only enough of the data to send it on to the next server, a process comparable to peeling back the layers of an onion (hence the name).
This process masks the origin of Web traffic, forum posts and other data sent over the Internet. It also makes it difficult to read the data while it's in transit.
Many people depend on Tor to provide an extra layer of security and privacy to their online activities. But online security expert Robert Graham suspects — and the recent NSA revelations seem to confirm — that the NSA is capable of cracking Tor wide open.
If the NSA is devoting significant resources to cracking SSL, it's probably already cracked a type of SSL that encrypts connections using what are called 1024-bit RSA or DH keys. These are randomized strings of 1,024 ones and zeroes that unlock the encryption of the RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) and DH (Diffie-Hellman) algorithms.
Security experts have long known that 1024-bit keys were becoming out of date. However, many websites still haven't upgraded to 2048-bit RSA keys, which are longer and therefore more secure.
Until recently, Tor used 1024-bit DH keys. The newest update, version 2.4, incorporates a different kind of DH encryption that uses a powerful next-generation encryption technique called elliptical curve cryptography.
However, according to Graham's research, only 24 percent of Tor traffic uses the elliptic-curve cryptography in version 2.4. That means more than three-quarters of Tor traffic uses some form of 1024-bit DH key, which is likely crackable by the NSA, Graham said.
More significant, Graham's findings show that only 10 percent of Tor relays have upgraded to 2.4. So even if you upgraded to 2.4, your Tor traffic might still get bounced through one or more relays running 2.3, meaning your upgrade isn't really doing you any good.
Dingledine said, however, that by his count the number of relays running 2.4 is closer to 50 percent.
Dingledine pointed out that Tor traffic has spiked considerably since Aug. 20, apparently because a rogue bot has been installing Tor version 2.3 on millions of computers. The flood of new Tor clients running 2.3 probably accounts for the low percentage of elliptic-curve encrypted traffic.
In his analysis, Graham also said that elliptical curve cryptography might not be as secure as thought.
"We think the NSA has made a breakthrough in mathematics," Graham told Tom's Guide. "That breakthrough may be in the 1024 bit keys I refer. Conversely, it may be in the newer elliptical curves. We just don't know where."
Don't panic yet, though. Just because the NSA has (probably) cracked 1024-bit keys or even (conceivably) elliptic curve cryptography, doesn't mean that everyone has.
All we know for sure is what was reported in The New York Times and The Guardian on Sept. 5: that the NSA can "undermine the major tools protecting the privacy of everyday communications in the Internet age." The articles did not provide specifics about which tools were undermined and what methods were used.
"It's not at all clear that NSA can break 1024-bit keys easily, or even at all currently," Dingledine said. "The main risk is that there will come a time in the future when it is easy — and we don't know when that time will arrive — and if they've logged Tor traffic flows from today, they'll be able to break those flows at that future point."

Microsoft Acquires Nokia’s Devices & Services Business

Microsoft Corporation and Nokia Corporation Tuesday announced that the Boards of Directors for both companies have decided to enter into a transaction whereby Microsoft will purchase

substantially all of Nokia’s Devices & Services business, license Nokia’s patents, and license and use Nokia’s mapping services.
Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will pay EUR 3.79 billion to purchase substantially all of Nokia’s Devices & Services business, and EUR 1.65 billion to license Nokia’s patents, for a total transaction price of EUR 5.44 billion (approximately $7.2 billion or Rs. 47,000 crores, as per Tuesday’s exchange rate) in cash. Microsoft will draw upon its overseas cash resources to fund the transaction. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approval by Nokia’s shareholders, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

“It’s a bold step into the future – a win-win for employees, shareholders and consumers of both companies. Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft’s share and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services,” said Steve Ballmer, Microsoft chief executive officer. “In addition to their innovation and strength in phones at all price points, Nokia brings proven capability and talent in critical areas such as hardware design and engineering, supply chain and manufacturing management, and hardware sales, marketing and distribution.”

Microsoft also announced that it has selected Finland as the home for a new data center that will serve Microsoft consumers in Europe. The company said it would invest more than a quarter-billion dollars in capital and operation of the new data center over the next few years, with the potential for further expansion over time.

Sony SmartWatch vs. Samsung Galaxy Gear: The first big battle in the wearable tech war

Is the new Samsung Galaxy Gear the best smartwatch ever?

(Credit: Josh Miller/CNET) Sony's latest wearable tech creation, the SmartWatch 2 (SW2) is attractively styled, water-resistant, and sports plenty of apps and watch faces. The Samsung Galaxy Gear is a strong contender too, running a specially tweaked version of Android powered by an 800MHz processor, and flaunting a big color OLED screen. Heck, it even has a mic and speaker plus a camera.
But just how useful are these watches really, and how do they stack up against each other? Read on as we break down Samsung's and Sony's tempting wearable tech entries.

Design

Sony SmartWatch 2
If you're familiar with Sony's first foray into the smartwatch space, you won't be too shocked by the SmartWatch 2's look and feel. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Sony's initial gadget was one of the sexiest-looking smart timepieces I ever laid my hands on. It was small, light, and attractively styled.

The Sony SmartWatch 2 has style galore.

(Credit: Aloysius Low/CNET) It also used a flexible silicone wristband that was pliable enough to feel extremely comfortable, yet springy enough to grip wrists tightly. At the moment Sony hasn't announced different color options for the SW2, but if history is any indicator, you can expect the watch to ship with multiple wrist strap options just like its predecessor.

The SmartWatch 2 can be charged with any Micro-USB cable.

(Credit: Aloysius Low/CNET) Sony has taken the same approach here, using a similar silicone strap and premium aluminum body. Measuring a mere 1.65 inches tall by 1.61 inches wide and 0.35 inch thick, the SW2 is also extremely svelte. Tipping the scales at just 0.8 ounce, Sony's device extremely light as well.
Samsung Galaxy Gear
Compared with the SmartWatch 2, the Galaxy Gear is physically more imposing -- at least on paper. Measuring 1.45 inches tall by 2.2 inches wide and 0.44 inch thick, there's no arguing that the Gear is larger. Additionally at 2.6 ounces, Samsung's watch is a lot heavier than the SW2.

(Credit: Josh Miller/CNET) Surprisingly though, when I got the chance to strap the Galaxy Gear to my wrist I found it felt much lighter than expected. Also, even though the Gear's rubbery strap isn't as pliable as Sony's previous smartwatch band, it is comfortable to wear. The watch is crafted with luxurious silver metallic flair so will hopefully draw the right sort of attention when noticed.
At the outset Samsung said it plans to offer the Gear in myriad band colors; six, to be exact. These include jet black, mocha gray, wild orange, oatmeal beige, rose gold, and lime green.
Advantage: Sony SmartWatch 2

Display

Sony SmartWatch 2
One trade-off with the SW2's smaller size is its display. While it technically measures 1.6 inches across, the SmartWatch 2's screen isn't quite as expansive as the Galaxy Gear's 1.63-inch viewer. It also packs fewer pixels than Sammy's gadget; 220x176 pixels as opposed to 320x320 pixels.
Sony, however, worked to address its first smartwatch's major failing, namely that its OLED screen was practically impossible to read under strong sunlight outdoors. Indeed, the SW2 is equipped with a transflective LCD designed not to become washed out in daylight.
Samsung Galaxy Gear
In terms of sheer size and pixel count, the Gear trumps the Sony SmartWatch 2. Its bigger 1.63-inch OLED screen serves up a sharper resolution (320x320 pixels). When I saw the Gear in person, the watch's display also produced images and text with vivid colors and high contrast. The Gear's screen also was extremely bright -- so much so that it gave my point-and-shoot camera trouble capturing its image.

(Credit: Brian Bennett/CNET) Of course, I didn't get a chance to observe the device outside under the blazing sun so we can only take Samsung's word that it's bright enough for pleasing outdoor use. OLED screens typically don't offer as many lumens as their LCD counterparts, transflective or otherwise.

Features and UI

Sony SmartWatch 2
Speaking of basic capabilities and user interface, the second incarnation of Sony's smartwatch doesn't depart much from the original. You get the same touch-screen UI, sliding widgets for viewing weather, Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, and other phone alerts that the first Sony timepiece sported. Also important is that the SmartWatch 2 is compatible with many Android handsets, not just Sony phones.
Pinching the screen pulls up the application tray, which shows all the mini applications that the SW2 has installed. You can also change the various watch faces for the device by selecting them via the Sony SmartWatch companion app on your smartphone. It is annoying, though, that you can't do this through the watch itself.

Besides pushing phone alerts to your wrist, the SW2 includes a dialpad for initiating calls right from the watch. Be advised that since the SW2 lacks a microphone and speaker, you'll have to chat using a simultaneously paired Bluetooth headset or dig your phone out of your pocket or bag. The SmartWatch 2 does show caller ID for screening and it'll even provide a way to text the caller back with canned messages

As a physically more imposing device, you'd expect the Galaxy Gear to do quite a bit -- and you'd be right. It can perform all the same push notification duties as the SW2, but be advised that the Gear is not merely locked tightly into Samsung ecosystem; at launch it will only be compatible with one phone, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which is a huge letdown for many of its potential Android buyers.
Even so, the Gear's skills are impressive. With its built-in microphone and speaker, the watch lets users conduct phone calls right from their wrists. It's a similar feature competitors such as the Martian Passport and Hot Watch boast and it's a useful if not particularly polite ability to have in your mobile arsenal. Sometimes you just need to get a few words across quickly, not engage in a total gabfest.

Change watch faces on the Gear through its companion Note 3 app.

Oddly enough, the Gear has a 1.9-megapixel camera sitting in the device's wristband, facing forward when the watch's screen is front and center for viewing. In addition to taking pictures, the camera can record 720p HD video. It's not entirely clear, though, what sorts of uses Samsung or Galaxy Gear users will dream up for this imaging system, outside of creepy stealth picture-taking. Still, it's an interesting tool to have.
I tried the feature out myself in person and found that the Gear snaps photos pretty quickly -- just tap the screen, though they looked washed out even on the watch's vibrant display. Also, unless you hold your wrist up high at an uncomfortable level, you'll be taking images of people at an unflattering upward angle.
One area where the Galaxy Gear shines, though, is in its user interface. With big tiles and clean fonts reminiscent of -- dare I say -- Windows Phone 8's Metro UI, information is extremely glanceable, quick to digest, and simple to navigate through. Compared with the SW2's rather plain, even dated graphics, the Gear definitely operates like a piece of tech from some elegant sci-fi future.

Battery

Sony SmartWatch 2
The original Sony SmartWatch had a battery rated to last for 3 to 4 days, or 14 hours of continual use. In my experience it really lasted shy of half or maybe most of a full work day. You'd definitely have to charge the sucker daily or risk being caught in a lurch. Sony makes the same 3-to-4-day longevity claim for the SW2, so I'm expecting to see about the same unsatisfying run time from the gadget. Perhaps its LCD screen will be more efficient, but I'm not optimistic.
Samsung Galaxy Gear
Samsung makes a similar assertion, pinning the Galaxy Gear's battery life at about 24 hours. It's unclear whether that's what users can expect out of the product through heavy or light operation. The Gear does rely on the latest form of Bluetooth wireless, version 4.0, which brings with it the promise of enhanced electrical efficiency. That said, like the Sony SW2, it's a good idea to charge the gadget daily.

Sony SmartWatch 2
True to Sony's dedication to NFC (near-field technology), the SmartWatch 2 features an NFC chip for fast Bluetooth pairing with similarly equipped phones. Supposedly linking compatible devices with the SW2 is merely a matter of tapping them together (with their NFC and Bluetooth radios engaged, of course).
As its predecessor before it, the SmartWatch 2 has an app devoted to finding your phone if you've misplaced it. The device will also alert you when your phone and watch move out of range from each other. The SW2 gives you the ability to control music playback on your handset and displays album art on its screen as well.
Samsung Galaxy Gear
Though Samsung integrates NFC widely across is Galaxy smartphone line, the technology doesn't make an appearance in the Gear. The watch does offer other impressive abilities besides making hands-free calls and shooting pictures and video.

Like the Hot Watch and SW2, the Gear can cause your phone to ring if you can't locate it. You can have your Samsung phone command the Gear's speaker to chirp too if you're in the reverse situation. Keep in mind both devices still need to be in Bluetooth range (30 feet) for this to work.
Outfitted with its own 4GB of onboard storage, the Gear can run tiny versions of apps locally. At launch the watch will have plenty of software preloaded, including a healthy selection of Samsung-branded apps such as S Voice (for making voice commands, dialing, and search), Voice Memo, and the Chat On communicator. A Music Controller application gives the Gear dominion over your phone's music player as well.
You'll find some third-party titles here too like the Tripit travel app, RunKeeper, and MyFitnessPal, plus Evernote. Interestingly, the Vivino Wine Scanner uses the Gear's camera to read bar codes on wine bottles for look up and future reference.

Durability

Sony SmartWatch 2
Sony has been designing rugged portable devices for very decades, and has expertise in this area harkening way back to its Sony Sport line of Walkman products. The company's Xperia Z and followup Z1 smartphones are dust and water resistant too so it's no surprise that the SmartWatch 2 continues this legacy.
Rated to meet the IP57 international standard for ruggedness, the SW2 can not only withstand exposure to fine particles of grime, it can handle being dunked in 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes without issue.
Samsung Galaxy Gear
The Gear is a scrappy number, too, and Samsung says the watch is designed to adhere to the IP55 protocol. Less stringent than IP57, the Gear is only rated to survive brief sprays of water not total immersion like the SW2. Basically, don't shower or swim laps in the pool with your Gear strapped on. The odd drink spill or raindrop shouldn't be a problem, though.

The take-away

Even with with all the features and abilities of both Sony's and Samsung's smartwatches laid out on the table, the choice before you isn't immediately clear. In a nutshell, the Galaxy Gear is a typical Samsung product. Its $299 sticker price is definitely steep and will put off all but the most eager early technology adopter. Of course in true Samsung fashion, the Gear boasts a lovely OLED screen and all the bells and whistles it could cram into it.
On the other hand, no pun intended, the Sony SmartWatch 2 represents a handsome evolution of an interesting but underwhelming device. It has a sleeker, more compact design than Samsung's whiz-bang creation and is more durable too. Still the SW2's software and UI apparently hasn't changed all that much from that of its older predecessor. This leaves the Galaxy Gear slightly more compelling in terms sheer power and usability.
One massive stumbling block I simply can't get over is the Gear's support for a single device, the Samsung Note 3. That's a tough pill to swallow especially given the SmartWatch 2's universal Android functionality. I also expect that the SW2's price will be lower, at about $199.99, since that's about what the first Sony SmartWatch cost. All this puts the SW2 ahead by a nose. Of course I can't ultimately make the call until I get both watches side-by-side and I'll have to wait until October until these gizmos hit the market in force.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs. Galaxy S4

Samsung's scorched earth mobile strategy has its share of critics. But if you're going to harp on Samsung for trying anything, everything, and all the spaces in between, you also have to acknowledge that the company has two major flagship smartphones that can each command the full attention of the tech world. How many smartphone makers can you say that about? Let's compare the latest versions of those two premier phones, the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy S4.

Size

The Galaxy S4 is pretty big for a smartphone, but it still doesn't hold a candle to Samsung's hulking phablet, the Note 3. The Note is about ten percent taller, 13 percent wider, and five percent thicker.

Weight

No minor difference here either, as the Note 3 is a full 29 percent heavier than the GS4.

Build

This was our biggest surprise from the Note 3 event. Samsung ditched its much-derided glossy plastic, found on the GS4 and most other recent Galaxy devices, and replaced it with a faux leather backing. It's still made of plastic, but now it's soft and leather-bound notebook-themed.
We'll have to wait for more extended time with the Note to draw any real conclusions here, but, at the very least, we tip our hats to Samsung for trying something new in the build department.

Display

This is the biggest perk of carrying around a lumbering phablet like the Note 3. It gives you 29 percent more screen real estate than the (already big) display on the GS4. The latest phablet is pushing the boundaries between phone and tablet more than ever.
Resolution is identical. Though that has the smaller screen on the GS4 coming out a bit sharper, they're both likely well past the point where you'll be even remotely disappointed. Sharp text, crisp images, happy eyeballs.

Processor

No need to worry about performance on either of these phones. Both the LTE and 3G versions of each have some of the fastest mobile processors of 2013.

RAM

The 2 GB of RAM on the GS4 is a very solid amount, even over four months after the phone's launch. The 3 GB in the Note 3 is forging new ground

Storage

The base model of the Note 3 doubles the base 16 GB in the Galaxy S4. Samsung's TouchWiz software, layered on top of Android on both phones, can really eat into that 16 GB, though, so that extra space could be a nice advantage for the Note.

Battery

The Note 3's battery holds 23 percent more juice. We were impressed with the Note 2's uptimes, but we'll have to wait to get the low-down on the Note 3's actual battery life.

Cameras

Megapixel counts are identical in both phones. The only true measure of phones' cameras, though, are sample shots. We'll have to wait a little while to put these two side-by-side.

Wireless

Both phones sport LTE radios, though they also both ship in versions that max out on HSPA+. That split coincides with the different processors we showed you above.

Software

The Note 3 runs Android 4.3, but the GS4 is supposedly going to be updated to that latest edition of Jelly Bean in October.
Both phones run Samsung's TouchWiz software, which grows more and more bloated by the minute. Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh, but depending where you're coming from, you might find TouchWiz's feature list to mean more bang for your buck, or just overwhelming and unnecessary. On the GS4, we'd lean towards the latter. If the Note 3 is anything like the Note 2, though, we'd lean a bit towards the former.

A Flying Car For $279,000

The company Terrafugia is close to producing a flying car that consumers could actually afford, with a possible price tag of $279,000.
Carl Dietrich, Terrafugia’s co-founder, CEO and CTO, has been working on the project since 2006. He has had a lifelong passion for flying and for many years has wondered why small aircraft were not developed to be an everyday transportation option.
“I think it’s ridiculous we don’t have these things out there, right now,” Dietrich said, speaking of the flying cars he’s helping to design. “There is so much potential for an economic benefit to society if we have things like this. There have been a number of studies recently that have quantified the economic impact of traffic congestion … just for the U.S., I think it was estimated at $87 billion to $125 billion a year. And that’s just comparing it to driving at normal speeds, without traffic.

In 2004 Dietrich read about the developments at the Federal Aviation Administration for new types of pilot licenses and a new kind of aircraft certification. It was then that the pathway for Terrafugia began.
The Transition is a small general-aviation airplane that can fold up its wings with just the push of a button. It reaches a cruising speed of 100 miles per hour during flight and in drive mode gets about 35 miles to the gallon.
One of the benefits of Transition is that it runs on premium unleaded automotive gasoline, rather than the more expensive aviation fuel. Once it has been landed at a small airport, the wings fold in less than a minute, the propeller disengages and the rear-wheel drive turns on; now you are ready for the road. Once home Transition will even fit in a single-car garage.

Terrafugia compares converting between flight and drive modes to “putting the top down on your convertible”.
“One of the biggest problems that pilots face is that flying little airplanes is a very weather-sensitive activity,” said Dietrich. “You may fly somewhere, and the weather changes and you’re stuck. You have to make other travel arrangements. It’s not something you can count on. With the Transition, you can count on getting to where you want to go. It may take a little longer, if you have to drive instead of fly, but you still get there, or you get home.”
The first model of this flying car already exists. “We’re flying a second-generation prototype, right now,” Dietrich said of the Transition. “But yes, it’s beyond the proof of concept stage.”
However don’t get too excited just yet, a pilot’s license is still necessary as it is considered a plane. The future looks good for Transition though, as according to Dietrich the National Highway Traffic Safety Aministration has granted the needed special considerations. The next step is for the FAA to make its decisions about special weight allowance.

Google Unveils The New Nexus 7

Google appears to have done it again with their new Nexus 7 tablet. It is a tablet that’s just about as good, if not better than, the market leader but far cheaper. The original Nexus 7, which pre-dated the iPad Mini by a few months, finally gave consumers an alternative to consider instead of Apple and at a very cheap price: just $199 for an eight-gigabyte model. Google recently released a bang up to date and newly refreshed Nexus 7 and while it’s a little more expensive than the previous version, it is again a serious iPad contender.

The Nexus 7 is constructed around a seven-inch screen that is super sharp with 323 pixels per inch, which is better than the standard Apple set with its Retina Display technology. This means good quality photos look razor sharp and text is clean and crisp, being easy on the eyes. High definition video streaming from Netflix or YouTube looks awesome. Despite its low price the cheapest 16-gigabyte version sells for $229 through the Google Play online store. This is compared to the iPad Mini at $349. As you would expect, the Nexus 7 is built with excellent hardware, including a quad-core processor and two gigabytes of RAM.

The downside of this product are the cameras, they are not the best quality. The 1.2-megapixel camera for video conferencing is standard but the five-megapixel rear-facing camera for pictures and HD video is just standard. The tablet is however, lightweight at 290 grams and Google announced you can watch nine hours of HD-quality video or browse the web for 10 hours before draining the battery. The high-end version with LTE connectivity and 32 gigabytes of storage (which is not yet available for sale) is priced at $349. Compare this to a top spec iPad Mini at $559! To me, that seems like a great price for a great piece of kit, but you guys do the math and see what you come up with!

Newkia Aiming to Take Nokia Talent to Android Platform

Out of the ashes of what many perceive as the burning death of Nokia, comes Newkia. It is the Singapore-based company that was founded the same day the US$7.2 billion Microsoft-Nokia deal was announced, with the single aim of acquiring Nokia employees and knowledge, but to focus on the Android platform.
Newkia plans to acquire as much of Nokia’s know-how as possible and do what they really should have done at Nokia and push Android forwards. ”The Microsoft-Nokia deal reflects the complete failure of the Windows strategy”, says Thomas Zilliacus, executive chairman and founder of Mobile FutureWorks

He spent over 15 years as a Nokia employee including seven where he was Asia-Pacific CEO. He left the company in 1993 but spent another three years under Nokia’s payroll as a regional consultant. He left to become an entrepreneur and currently runs investment company Mobile FutureWorks, which advisors include former Nokia’s mobile phones CEO Jorma Nieminen and Ericsson’s former CEO Sven-Christer Nilsson.
Zilliacus, tried to buy out Nokia a year ago with the aim to push the company toward a strategy focused around the Android platform, but was unable to raise enough funds to do so despite approaching several global sovereign wealth and equity funds. He still believes Nokia makes the best phones in the world, citing the Lumia collection which he said had been well-received in the market. ”But consumers simply don’t want the Windows OS because it lacks the ecosystem and there are not enough apps and services built for the platform that users find crucial today,” he said. He added that the Windows market share is too small for developers to want to develop for the OS. “There’s also a general image problem where Microsoft isn’t perceived as a sexy company.
Developers think it’s cooler to develop for Android and Apple iOS.” He has welcomed Microsoft’s buyout because it opens up the floodgates for his company to now swoop in and gather up Nokia’s technology know-how.
