Chevy's New Malibu

The most controversial car in the country right now is the new Chevrolet Malibu. Not because it's an arrogant, antisocial SUV or a pious, counterculture icon but because it's a straightforward, middle-of-the-road, midsize, economical, fairly basic, four-door, $19,995 sedan. A Detroit sedan.

Detroit hasn't produced many of these recently. There's a good Ford that too few people are aware of, since it was introduced with a small flurry as the Ford Five Hundred but then the marketing experts decided to rename it the Ford Taurus (wait, wasn't that the dreadful rental car?) and now we know it, if we do at all, as the "new Taurus."

We used to make sedans like the Malibu all the time. Every so many years, Dad went down to either the Chevy or Ford dealer, occasionally the Plymouth store, and bought the family a new Detroit sedan. Those were the days when Mercedes-Benzes were sold as a sideline by Studebaker, Jaguars and BMWs were imported by the hundreds, and "made in Japan" was a joke. Detroit made Cars. The rest of the world made Morrises, Opels, Renaults and Toyopets. Feh.

But why is the Malibu controversial?

Because it is so important a project to Chevrolet, and to General Motors as a whole, that car writers can't decide whether it's fabulous or forgettable. On the one hand it's already getting car-of-the-year awards and on the other hand, USA Today politely pans it. Car and Driverthetruthaboutcars.com insists that American automotive journalists are biased, all too ready to anoint Detroit's second coming. There's a huge advertising push, but it got into high gear before Chevy dealers had any Malibus to sell. loves the Malibu,

I drove two new Malibus a week ago -- the four-cylinder base model and the moderately more expensive V6 version -- and thought they were excellent cars, totally deserving of any economy-sedan buyer's consideration. The Malibu is handsomer and more stylish than any Chevrolet sedan since the iconic 1957 Bel Air. Particularly with the twin-cam, four-cylinder, 30-mpg base engine, it's an excellent value, with a variety of features standard (ABS, tire-pressure monitoring, electronic stability platform, panic-braking assist).

But economy-sedan buyers today automatically turn toward Toyota and Honda, to buy the Camrys and Accords that are the safe choice in this market segment. Which, as Chevy admits, is overwhelmingly skeptical of American manufacturers. Who wants to gamble with $20,000-plus? Detroit became almost entirely a truck manufacturer (SUVs and pickups) starting in 1990 and gave up the business of designing economical, reliable cars; there's not much profit in an economy sedan, but lots in a simple-to-build truck. The Japanese gladly accepted the gift of the economy-sedan market.

Any chance we can take it back? As good a car as the Malibu is, that's doubtful. Detroit lost an entire generation, maybe two, of car buyers who long ago decided that the domestic industry's reliability was awful, its dealers were miserable and its warranties unenforceable. That's all changing, but once the herd has stampeded, it's hard to turn it.

Next generation Swift is almost here and we've got all exclusive new details and pictures.

The new third-generation Suzuki Swift hits UK shores this autumn with the Japanese carmaker holding its premier line off ceremony in its Esztergom, Hungary production plant.

With new developments in styling, performance and sharply lower emissions, the new Swift features a longer body and wheelbase that uses higher strength steel to make shell lighter and stiffer.

A new 1.2-litre petrol engine incorporates Dual VVT (variable intake and exhaust valve timing), which makes it a stronger, better-performing powertrain than the previous 1.3-litre. Another improvement over the previous model is the significantly lower fuel consumption at 56.5 mpg, while emissions are lowered to 116 g/km.

A 1.3-litre option will become available for the UK in early 2011, offering better emissions and fuel consumption, as well as handling and performance all at once.

If we take the Transformers analogy further (bear with us), the Camaro has landed after a few Decepticons – the Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang and Nissan 370Z – have already begun staking out territories. More than the others, the Camaro has to justify its place in the battle, while at the same time backing up three years of unrelenting hype.

Toyota Camry still the top-selling car

So much for all the talk about Toyota's demise. Not only was the brand as a whole March's best-selling automotive brand in the United States, its most famous product was the best-selling car in America in March, too. The Toyota Camry, frequently mocked on Fullmeter.blogspot.com for its bland nature and annoying ubiquity, crushed the competition. Sales of the Toyota Camry in March doubled up the Camry's Sales Stats total from February.

Better yet for the Japanese giant, the Toyota Corolla was the United States second best-selling car in March, some 7,000 units ahead of its main competitor, the Honda Civic. Combining sales of the two best-selling GM cars, the Chevrolet Malibu and Chevrolet Impala, still isn't enough to topple the almighty Toyota Camry, a car which has had its share of horrific press coverage in 2010. Y'almost get the feeling that Toyota Camrys have a bit of swagger now. The Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In America for March of 2010 are in the Graph below.

Toyota has adopted a concept known as "sustainable mobility."
We are seeking to create a mobile unit with sustainable mobility at the core; in other words, the ultimate "eco-car" that allows the Earth, people, and vehicles to coexist harmoniously long into the future.
To achieve this, we are developing technologies from the following three perspectives to enhance the environmental performance of vehicles: Hybrid technology will be core technology of the ultimate "eco-car."

The vehicle must not only have outstanding environmental performance, but also be able to exhibit this performance anywhere in the world, no matter what the environment, lifestyle habits, or economic conditions.
One example is fuel. The ultimate system must be able to operate on gasoline, bio-ethanol, or hydrogen. And Toyota's hybrid system will make that sort of flexibility possible.

A short trip to a local convenience store, to take one example, would be perfect for a one-person personal mobility unit that operates solely on electricity or a small two-person commuter vehicle.
Meanwhile, the appropriate vehicle for going out on a drive for pleasure would be a hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicle, which can travel a relatively long distance carrying multiple passengers without having to be charged and which can travel using the existing infrastructure.
A fuel cell hybrid vehicle would be ideal for large and commercial vehicles that are used frequently and driven long distances.
By choosing the vehicle that best suits the driving situation, in that sort of way, vehicles can become more environmentally considerate.
We can minimize the energy used for transporting people and goods by providing the most appropriate vehicle for the given situation and time.
This is Toyota's concept of being environmentally considerate, based on the right vehicle for the right place at the right time.

Jaguar claims that ADC offers increased traction while avoiding the negatives of a fully mechanical differential such as increased understeer. Jaguar says that in dynamic mode, the dampers are stiffened and with the stability control switched off, ADC allows controllable power oversteer and improved off-throttle stability. We can't wait to see how these new systems work on the road.

Visually, the XFR gets the logical upgrades. Twenty-inch, twin seven-spoke alloy wheels are standard. The front fascia gains a larger lower grill and chrome outboard air intakes. The hood also features louvers. The XFR also features sill extensions and a new rear lower valence. Finally, a new exterior mirror design with integrated LED blinkers is used. Inside, new leather and 18-way adjustable sport seats (14-way for the front passenger) are fitted. Unique dark oak veneer with dark mesh aluminum trim is also standard.

We're excited to drive the new XFR. Orders begin in Europe in February and we expect to see cars on sale in the U.S. this summer. But the XFR isn't the only change in the XF model line for 2010. Replacing the 4.2-liter supercharged engine is a normally-aspirated version of the XFR's 5.0-liter V-8. This 385 hp, 380 lb-ft engine utilizes direct-injection as well and fits in nicely between the XFR's 510-hp powerplant and the carryover 300 hp, 4.2-liter V8. Other notable changes include the availability of a Portfolio model with more luxurious interior appointments and an upgraded navigation system available on all XF models that now includes turn-by-turn instructions in the message center between the speedometer and the tachometer. It's nice that Jaguar isn't leaving one of our favorite mid-size luxury cars alone despite it being only a year old.

The big news for the 2010 Jaguar XFR is its engine, the snappy sedan gets a new 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 with a BMW M5-conquering 510 hp. Read the full story on the 2010 Jaguar XFR sedan featured at the 2009 NAIAS Detroit Auto show at Automobile Magazine online.
