Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects.

Skype Caller ID and Google Voice

I'm not sure when it took effect, but you can now assign your Google Voice Caller ID to your Skype account so that your outgoing Skype calls show your Google Voice number. I tried to do this months ago, but it requires Skype to send a text message to the desired number, and Skype at that time was unable to send text messages to GV numbers.

This has been resolved. And setting it up is super-simple:

1. go to the "Caller ID" section of your account
2. click "Change Number" and enter your GV phone number
3. you should receive a text message with a code (this took about 10 seconds for me)
4. enter this code back into the Skype page
5. wait 24 hours for the change to take effect

Now the people you call won't get confused by Skype's default caller ID.

Blogger Template Designer

Google has launched their Template Designer as part of the Blogger in Draft system (sort of their "Labs" for Blogger). Essentially it adds a bit more customization and templates to Blogger for those of us that are CSS-challenged. Read more about it here, or watch the video below.

Okay, so I'm not mentioned, but the company I founded - Podcast Ready, Inc. - is. It's discussed in the Podcast entry with regards to the trademark, where its mentioned that of all the companies that filed for "podcast" related marks, Podcast Ready was the only to receive one.

Of course a trademark is only as good as the bank account backing it. And when someone like Apple wants to claim a "common law right to all things 'pod'" it takes a boatload of cash to prove them wrong.

Google adds social "gadgets" to iGoogle

Google seems to take another shot at Facebook with the addition of social gadgets to the portfolio of things one can install on their iGoogle page. Titles include many you might expect, such as Scrabble and Chess. But there are a lot of titles that don't seem particularly social at all, such as Today's Horoscope and NPR.

I never spend any real amount of time on my iGoogle page so I can't say that I am personally excited about these new gadgets. But then again I don't play any Facebook apps either so I'm probably not their target audience.

TV.com can be linked to your TiVo DVR allowing you to schedule recordings right from the website. The setup process is super-simple, but you do have to register your box with My Tivo first. After that, just click the "Record to TiVo DVR" on a show's page and the rest is taken care of for you.

g.ho.st - a fairly cool "virtual computer" site with a great domain name - is shutting down their public offerings to concentrate on paying (SHOCK!) customers. The service ~~provides~~ provided the user with a virtual system complete with their own desktop, folders, email, etc. Its pretty handy if you have to share a pool of computers. There are still a few others out there but g.ho.st was definitely my favorite.

Facebook "Like" App: A Real Sneaky Bastard

If Facebook apps are harmless then why are some of them such sneaky bastards? I logged in this morning and found a notification that someone "likes my photo." I clicked on the word "photo" as I normally do expecting it to take me to the photo in question. Instead, it took me to a page. WTF?

You have to look pretty closely to notice any difference between the fake and real "likes" - it appears to be how the link is formed.

I have no idea what this apps really does, but if it has to be that sneaky it can't be good.

Update: I guess the folks behind the "Like" app had to change things around a bit. This morning's latest notice was that "Lika" needed access...

Thanks to WiFi signals, there is an amazing amount of electric energy just floating in the air at any given moment. RCA has found a way to harness that power and they are planning to release a charging device that works purely by snagging a WiFi signal. Supposedly, it is effective enough to charge a Blackberry from 30% powered to full in 90 minutes.

Hulu Lab's Closed Caption Search

Hulu Labs now offers closed caption searching adding a new dimension to video search. Instead of relying on your neighbors to properly label and tag clips (let's face it, my neighbors are all idiots) you can now search words and phrases contained in the closed caption feeds of the television shows. So the next time your trying to describe something you've recently watched, just type in a few words and email them the video clip.
