it last week that this song from Julia Holter's 2012 album Ekstasis
really stuck in my head. And at lunchtime today, just like yesterday and the
day before, I was walking through the streets and Julia's velvet voice was
singing again in my head, and I knew for sure I had to add this song to my
list.

There are bold artistic performances, maximalist productions and emotional
pyrotechnics and then there is "Here" by Aoife Wolf.

Originally written and performed by Pavement in 1992, the song has already this
feature of sounding accidental on purpose. Wolf's cover however takes this to
the next level and gently removes even the suggestion of an effort.

The result has a distinctly demo-like feel. Just this low-key guitar strumming
with all the urgency of a houseplant photosynthesizing in winter and Wolf's
fragile voice. One might ask, did anyone here even feel like it?

And yet it works. The song creates a unique dark atmosphere, proving
that sometimes the boldest artistic statement is a well-executed shrug.

Transition by The Kids and the Cosmos is the kind of song that doesn't just
play but gently materialize, developing at a pace that is best described as
"geological".

When your inhabit the first few minutes of the song, the spherical sounds
lulling you into a state of maximum relaxation, somewhere between a spa day and
the comforting realization that nothing is expected of you ever again

Just as you've fully accepted your fate as ambient space dust, the last third
arrives with a sudden mood swing and the song moves heroically toward its grand
finale, which reminds me of Empty Cans by The Streets in a odd way.

In the end, it lives up to its name: A perfect Transition!

First you expect Vapor Trail to behave like a well-trained post-rock song: rise
from a slow burn into something dramatic, but the big moment turns out to be
only a modest guitar solo that arrives at the middle of the song,
nods politely and leaves without making eye contact.

Spectacular, on the other hand, is Anna-Lynne Williams' voice, which carries
the entire song and gives it its unique mood.

Perfect on a cold January morning in 2026, when the sky is gray and optimism
is technically still alive but clearly not thriving. This Song doesn't try to
save you from that mood. It simply sits beside you, which, honestly, feels so
much more like pure love.

What a magnificent piece of premium-grade schmaltz. Truly, if sentimentality
were a liquid, this track would require a mop. Sturgill tops it off with that
haunted Johnny-Cash-after-a-long-night timbre, delivering a romance so sugary
it could give your dentist nightmares — and yet, against all odds, it somehow
absolutely works.

Maybe it's because I first heard it in "The Leftovers", a tv-show where everyone is
one emotional breakdown away from hugging a blender. In that context, this song
feels less like a country ballad and more like an inside joke: Yes, the
world is ending, but at least the soundtrack is great.

"The Promise" is also an excelent karaoke choice for declaring your undying
devotion to someone who, let's be honest, would rather be anywhere else.

It's painful, it's dramatic, it's perfect.

The first three and a half minutes of this song are pure, hypnotic harp spirals
— the ones that make you question time, space, and whether you've just slipped into
another dimension or are simply dealing with the consequences of last night's
choices.

This blissful disorientation continues until Julianna's angelic voice drifts in
and returns you, at least partially, to the mortal realm.

The reverb is so thick it turns the lyrics into a distant, poetic fog — which
is honestly ideal, really - actual comprehension would only ruin the vibe. This
isn't a song you just listen; it's a song you surrender to.

"When Things Are True Again" sounds like a version of ABBA that has been
meditating alone in the woods in a parallel universe for several years, quietly
lost faith in humanity.

It's Linda Perhacs' perfect angelic voice and the calm, acoustic arrangement
that makes you stare out the window for a very long time before you ask
yourself whether things will be "true again" after the apocalypse hits or
wether the first cup of coffee in the morning will be enough.

It's also the lyrics that make the song beautiful, powerful, and just
optimistic enough to make all the despair it conveys seem poetic.

10/10 for cosmic melancholy.

I discovered this song back in the spring this year, but like most of any good
decisions, it took a few month to actually mean something. "Everyday" feels like
waking up in a quiet apocalypse but the kind where you still have coffee and a
faint memory of joy. Musically reduced to the bare minimum: a bass line, droning synths
and lyrics that stay in in your head but never pay rent.

The song is awesome in that quietly devastating Yo La Tengo way — romantic,
slightly blurred, like Paul Le Mat in 1980 driving off into the fog, never
realizing the world ended three exits back. Five stars!

This song is pure heartbreak served with a side of choir-led existential dread.
The Brooklyn Youth Choir does the rest and elevates every line to operatic
levels of emotional manipulation - you'll feel nostalgic and guilty in equal
measure. It flirts with kitsch but never loses sincerity, making it impossible
not to fall for this song. By the time this happens you’re either in tears or
considering talking to a horse for emotional support.

A hidden treasure from the early '70s, "Sweet Mountain" by American Spring is a
dreamy, sun-drenched tune that floats somewhere between girl group nostalgia
and Beach Boys experimentation. Featuring Marilyn Wilson then-wife of Brian
Wilson this track bears his unmistakable musical fingerprints.

Co-written and produced by Brian Wilson and David Sandler, "Sweet Mountain"
opens with a slow, harmonious section before leaping into bright, piano-driven
driven passages that bubble with California optimism.

While it may not have been a commercial success, the track is a sweet slice of
baroque-pop psychedelia. Unmistakably a product of its time, yet today, more
than 50 years later, it has become timelessly beautiful.

masterclass in atmospheric depth. From the get-go, the song radiates a mood
that feels epic and subliminal melancholic at the same time.

Weatherall created a majestic reinterpretation that reminds me of driving
through a dystopian, futuristic, foggy city at night. The most prominent feature
is the rumbling bass line that serves as the perfect foundation for the
spectral distorted synth motifs that seem to come from some unseen world.
Electronic elegance doesn't get any better than this.

Rooted in the band's signature orchestral pop aesthetic, the track unfolds like

Built around the sustained vocals of Zach Condon, "Tuanaki Atoll" evokes for me
the image of a slow-swaying sailing ship drifting across calm waters. This

Dan Deacon’s "When I Was Done Dying" is a whirlwind of sound and emotion,
bursting with relentless energy and vibrant creativity. Deacon crafts a song
that feels both chaotic and euphoric reminding me of a blend between Animal
Collective´s vocals and Mika´s theatricality.

I came across the track through the German TV series "Dark", which I'm only now
watching with a few years’ delay. Deacon's storytelling in this song, surreal
and poetic, is a surprisingly fitting choice for the series, which actually
strikes a quieter tone. But just like the show, the song feels otherworldly,
experimental in its many layers of sound, much like the layers of time in
"Dark".

that feels both chaotic and euphoric reminding me of a blend between Animal
Collective´s vocals and Mika´s theatricality.

I came across the track through the German TV series "Dark", which I'm only now
watching with a few years’ delay. Deacon's storytelling in this song, surreal
and poetic, is a surprisingly fitting choice for the series, which actually
strikes a quieter tone. But just like the show, the song feels otherworldly,
experimental in its many layers of sound, much like the layers of time in
"Dark".

This song perfectly captures the nostalgic charm that defines Organi’s album
"Babylonia". Drenched in 60s and 70s influences, the song radiates a feel-good
atmosphere that’s both warm and irresistibly catchy. With melodies reminiscent
of France Gall’s work in the 60s, it lingers in the mind long after the last
note fades. Like the rest of "Babylonia", this track is highly recommended!

now feels like finding a treasure. Written and sung by Stuart Braithwaite, this
track shows the slower and calmer side of the band, which stands in contrast to
their signature instrumental epics.

"Cody" is wonderfully restrained with a rather subtle instrumentation. But make
no mistake it is precisely this deliberate pace that makes the atmosphere of
the song so impressive. The lyrics are gripping, beautifully sad and drenched
in nostalgia, painting pictures of times gone by. There is a yearning in every
line carried by Braithwait's understated yet expressive voice, which make this
song an timeless classic.

magic, however, is the turn towards hope. This gives the song an elegant ending
that celebrates the healing power of nature and the cyclical rhythm of life

alone awakens the faint idea that this song will be something really special.
But it's the angelic choir singing that gives the track its real charm,
creating that certain lovely aura of nostaligia that will bring tears to the

Melancholy and pop have never sounded better. The song flows effortlessly with
a instrumental simplicity rarely heard. The lyrics, which deal with
vulnerability, create a brilliant contrast to the pop theme. Halfway through,
the vocals fall silent and for the rest of the song the listener slowly drifts
into an almost meditative guitar outro that you wish would never end.

They say the only constant in life is change. MGMT see things differently and
take the listener into their world of synth-pop with sounds slightly
reminiscent of "The Cure". The crisp bass line, the pure acoustic guitars mixed
with catchy synths surrounds you like a warm musical blanket and awakens the
faint idea that after a long, dark winter there maybe will be warmth and light
again sometime.

Besides the grand finale, my personal favorite moment of the song
is at about 02:28, where you are suddenly hit by a bass drum, accompanied by
some kind of distorted harmonica sound. You find yourself in one of those
fascinating moments and you know for sure that the great quality of MGMT really
never changes.

My personal favorite from their new album.

simple guitar as accompaniment is enough to make a memorable impression. So

the circle will close at some point and everything will be ok.

Accompanied by angelic vocals, jazzy trumpet sounds and meditative drums, the
listener is immersed in deeper and deeper levels like in a dream. You forget
everything around you as the song unfolds and more instruments join the
gorgeous soundscape. As you slowly make your way back to the surface from
minute 7:50, you'll feel a pleasant warmth and a sense of peace that won't be
forgotten when you return to reality after the almost 12-minute fantastic
journey.

Perfect for the fall mood where everything is falling apart and you feel a sense
of sadness, but deep down you know that this is all right. The first part of
the song starts with dreamlike sounds and teleports the listener into another
world to the mixed male and female vocals, while the droning guitars and drums
get more and more aggressive and finally replace the relaxation.

In the last third you fall in love with this song forever. The mood shifts into
a sudden calm, into an unexpected dreamlike world of love where, accompanied by
the tender vocals, you wonder if you could stay in this world forever. “But
you can't ask a stranger things like that”.

“I think things have always been crap, it’s just that when I was a child, the

would like to go back to a time when the future seemed optimistic. That, as

This track seems cheerful and danceable when listened to inattentively.
Shimmering synths combined with a melodic bass line make it seem like a classical
1980s electronic post-punk song. The lyrics, however, provide a particularly
dark contrast. New Order offer the listener a cryptic story that gives the song
a certain depth and uniqueness, leaving you unsettled and with an unconditional
desire to listen to the track again and again.
