With a name and image that pays tribute to the Cimarrons – Cubans of African descent that resisted slavery – and music and showmanship that re-embodies funk legends from the last century, the medical-school student turned funk artist has developed into a musical force crafting the sonic future of the island and a global, cultural phenomenon that unites and celebrates blackness across borders, oceans and languages. Performing with La Tribu (The Tribe), his 9-piece band from Havana, Cimafunk has electrified global audiences on massive stages and worldwide temples of music, making a name for himself as one of the great showmen of today. After three consecutive Grammy nominations, a Latin Grammy nomination for “Record of the Year” and becoming the first Cuban born artist to play Coachella, you can find Cimafunk at New Orleans Jazz Fest, performing at the Kennedy Center Honors, lighting up NPR’s Tiny Desk, rocking stages in Japan or Australia, or hanging with the Godfather of Funk George Clinton.

AMBIENT BIRD – OHLONE PARK 2026

Wendy Reid’s site-specific work, Ambient Bird-Ohlone Park 2026 is a 52-minute interspecies sonic landscape which reflects an eco-centric philosophy of connecting with all living creatures and the environment. The ensemble includes an African Grey parrot and experimental musicians working with the ambient sounds, specifically, the birds of Ohlone Park: Cedar Waxwings, Lesser Goldfinches, Bewick’s Wrens, Oak Titmice, Western Bluebirds, Anna’s Hummingbirds, California Scrub-Jays, Dark-eyed Juncos, Stone Pigeons, and American Crows –all part of an event that is intended to bring everyone and everything together, and honor the park’s indigenous inhabitants, the Ohlone People.

The structure of this work can be described as a musical process which attempts to reflect nature’s manner of operations: a spatially notated score of sonic fragments transcribed from bird-human interactions and a Native American chant is interpreted and performed by the musicians within the ambient environment of Ohlone Park. Contextual in nature, the work allows performers to act according to unpredictable conditions and variables which arise within the musical continuity. In performance, an attempt is made at a spontaneous unforced growing of sound and silence in which emphasis is placed on formation rather than pre-established form, as in the building and shaping of cell-like units in living processes.

This site-specific piece, as with the first incantation,‘Ambient Bird 433’, pays homage to John Cage’s composition 4’33”(1952).

At sunset, following the performance, Brenda Hutchinson leads everyone in bell-ringing: created by composer and sound artist Brenda Hutchinson in 2008, Dailybell is an ongoing aspirational project based on the premise that something as inarguable as the movement of the Earth can be used as a point of unity and awareness among groups of people who might otherwise find it impossible to agree.

About the site: Ohlone Park was originally the land of the Ohlone people, who consider their connection to the land to be sacred. It remains a place of cultural significance that people protect and recognize its history. It is the hope of many that one day it will be returned to its indigenous inhabitants.

Special Thanks: City of Berkeley-Shallon Allen, Thomas Horn-videographer, Phil Perkins-location audio engineer, Edward Morse-tech, Andrew Aldrich-photography, Matt Ingalls-sfSOUND, and the musicians of Ambient Bird-Ohlone Park 2026

info at treepieces. net

This performance is included in ‘Ambient Bird-Berkeley’ (2025-26), a project supported in part by a Civic Arts Grant from the City of Berkeley

In the American Redwoods, two old trees wonder when they will finally die. In the Pacific Ocean, a colony of coral deals with the trials and tribulations of living in a commune. And in a maple forest, a terminally ill young human stumbles upon two talking mushrooms who are experts on death. Juliet Kang Huneke’s ecological pattern play Mycelium is a mosaic of our planet’s interconnections, from loneliness to queerness to life and death to dirt. A PlayGround commission, originally developed as part of the 29th annual PlayGround Festival of New Works. Featuring: L Duarte, Nikki Nutterfield, Krystle Piamonte, Kunal Prasad, and Dom Refuerzo.

Juliet Kang Huneke is a playwright and performer who is passionate about theatre that is larger than life. In spring 2026, her new TYA play, THE DRESS-UP PLAY, had its world premiere at Jackalope Theatre Company. She was awarded the 2023 ReImagine: New Plays in TYA grant to develop HANNAH AND HALMONI SAVE THE WORLD! with Filament Theatre, where it had its world premiere in 2025. Juliet is also a 24 Hour Plays Nationals alum. Other Chicago writing credits include: ECHO’S INFERNO (The Understudy), HOME FOR THE SUMMER (Theo Ubique, American Music Theatre Project), MYCELIUM (Playground Chicago), and MECHANICALS (Impostors Theater Co Footholds Vol. 4). julietkanghuneke.com

About the Exhibition

The 2026 AVA Lab exhibition presents works that imagine futures carried forward through memory, resistance, and collective imagination. Grounded in ancestral and cultural knowledge, the exhibition foregrounds counter-narratives that challenge dominant histories and propose alternative ways of being, belonging, and organizing life together.

Rather than presenting the future as speculative or detached, the exhibition positions it as already in motion—embedded in inherited practices, community rituals, survival strategies, and acts of care. The works reflect how artists navigate tension, difference, and transformation, offering visions shaped by accountability, cultural continuity, and community wisdom.

Together, the exhibition becomes a space of convergence: where personal histories meet collective futures, where grief and imagination coexist, and where art functions as a tool for remembering, re-visioning, and building power beyond the individual.

On Saturday, May 16, Budist will release the 2025 California Harvest Report at a public gathering hosted at the Berkeley Chapel of the Flowers, presented in partnership with the Cannabis Buyers’ Club of Berkeley (CBCB).

Building on last year’s inaugural report, this event brings together the public, trade, and media to explore the agricultural heritage of California cannabis and the distinct qualities that define its most important growing regions.

Spanning seven counties—Humboldt, Mendocino, Trinity, Nevada, Lake, Santa Cruz, and Sonoma—the Harvest Report highlights a diverse cross-section of farms and producers, with a focus on cultivation practices, terroir, and regional expression.

This event is open to both seasoned connoisseurs and those newer to cannabis who are interested in exploring different regions, cultivars, and cultivation practices. We welcome retailers, buyers, and budtenders looking for a clearer sense of how regions differ and how to navigate the range of producers across the state. By bringing these regions together in one place, the goal is to build a deeper appreciation for origin and appellation, while recognizing the legacy regions and cultivators that continue to define California cannabis.

Throughout the afternoon, attendees will have the opportunity to meet farmers, explore regional diversity, and take part in guided tastings and community discussions that deepen awareness and appreciation of California’s agricultural heritage.
