AXA Research Fund - Call for Projects Campaign

Summary: The AXA research fund has just announced that its Call for Projects campaign is now open!
The submitted project must fit into one of these three themes: Environmental risks,
Life risks, and SocioEconomic risks. Additionally, the project must
take a very innovative or original approach to the field. It is especially important that
the innovative nature of the project be highlighted in the application. The projects
that will be selected must be both of the highest academic quality and also of such
innovation that they could be considered ‘frontier science.’ Therefore, applications
submitted to this call should be so innovative that they might have more difficulty
receiving funding elsewhere.
Although these projects must fit into one of the three themes: Environmental risks,
Life risks, and SocioEconomic risks the AXA research fund will welcome
applications from any discipline, including but not limited to: Earth Sciences,
Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Fundamental and Applied Mathematics, Economics,
Sociology, Political Sciences, Philosophy, Psychology, etc…
Projects that are oriented
towards a clinical only approach will however be considered out of scope.

Deadline: Candidates will have until 23rd May 2011 to complete their application and submit a project proposal which can be located on the AXA research fund website.

Summary: A new round of Newton International Fellowships – an initiative to fund research collaborations and improve links between UK and overseas researchers – has now opened.

The Newton International Fellowships are funded by the British Academy and the Royal Society and aim to attract the most promising early-career post-doctoral researchers from overseas in the fields of the humanities, the natural, physical and social sciences. The Fellowships enable researchers to work for two years at a UK research institution with the aim of fostering long-term international collaborations.

Newton Fellows will receive an allowance of £24,000 to cover subsistence and up to £8,000 to cover research expenses in each year of the Fellowship. A one-off relocation allowance of up to £2,000 is also available.

In addition, Newton Fellows may be eligible for follow-up funding of up to £6,000 per annum for up to 10 years following completion of the Fellowship to support activities which will help build long term links with the UK.

The scheme is open to post-doctoral (and equivalent) early-career researchers working outside the UK who do not hold UK citizenship.

2011 Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships

Funding Source: The Leverhulme Trust

Summary: Early Career Fellowships aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers but with a proven record of research. It is anticipated that a Fellowship will lead to a more permanent academic position. Applications are welcomed in any discipline, and approximately 70 Fellowships will be available in 2011.

The Trust will contribute 50% of each Fellow’s total salary costs up to a maximum of £23,000 per annum and the balance is to be paid by the host institution. Given the prestige of the awards each Fellow may request annual research expenses of up to £6,000 to further his or her research activities.

Fellowships are normally tenable for either two or three years on a full-time basis, but requests to hold the award part-time over a proportionately longer period will be considered if this is appropriate for the nature of the research proposed and the career development of the individual. Fellowships will commence between the beginning of the 2011/2012 academic year and 1 May 2012.

International Partnerships (Africa/Middle East/ South Asia)

Summary: In an initiative developed by the British Academy’s Area Panels, awards of up to £10,000 a year for up to three years are available to support the development of ongoing links between research centres or institutions, within the humanities and social sciences, in the UK and in Africa, the Middle East or South Asia. The link would be built around a specific research theme of mutual interest. This could be carried forward through visits in both directions; workshops; seminars and lecture programmes; collaborative research; and joint publications. The programme might form part of either institution’s training programme and will ideally involve participation from more than one overseas institution, and might also involve more than one department/university/group/research centre in the UK.

The scheme is intended to foster links between the UK and Africa, the Middle East or South Asia, with an emphasis on helping scholars to develop research skills and to produce a joint research outcome.
Applicants must have identified an academic partner based in an institution in Africa, the Middle East or South Asia, who will act as the co-applicant on the award.

Priority will be given to projects with a training element, such as the support and development of staff or postgraduate students (in the UK and overseas). The scheme is intended to benefit early-career scholars from both the UK and overseas, and projects will be highly regarded where they include junior academics from both sides. Visits might be undertaken for staff exchange, supplying teaching elements to courses and developing joint curricula. Workshops and seminars should form an integral part of the programme, and involve both staff and postgraduate students. It is expected that each programme should produce papers or some other joint research outcome designed for publication. Grants are offered up to a maximum of £10,000 per year for up to 3 years

Deadline: 30 March 2011. Decisions will be announced in late July.

WAG NAtional Science Academy Grant Scheme January-March 2011

Funding Source:“Welsh Assembly Government/NAtional Science Academy (NSA) Wales”

Summary:
In April 2010, Welsh ministers gave the go-ahead for the National Science Academy (NSA) in Wales, a commitment in the One Wales manifesto document. Ministers stated that the NSA would promote the take-up of science, technology, engineering and mathematics – STEM subjects – at all levels to ensure Wales has a continuous pipeline of people graduating from colleges and universities with the appropriate qualifications and skills. The Welsh Assembly Government has allocated a total of approximately £250,000 to the National Science Academy Grant Scheme for January – March 2011.
Applicants can apply for between 1-3 months funding and up to 100% of the activity/project cost.
There are no definitive limits on the amount per proposal that can be applied for. However, the Welsh Assembly Government is unlikely to fund proposals for less than £2,500 or more than £30,000 for this three month period unless there is a clear and persuasive reason for doing so.
Funding proposals must firstly meet two main criteria. Proposals must demonstrate that they:
1) contribute to delivery of the National Science Academy by building on or coordinating STEM activity in Wales.
AND
2) have a clear benefit to Wales.
If your proposal meets these first two main criteria, it must then also fall under one or more of the following areas
a) support STEM activity in Wales.
b) help facilitate delivery of specific projects that build on current STEM activity.
c) facilitate coordination of STEM projects.
d) encourage networks of professionals inWales to contribute to STEM activity.
e) facilitate awareness of STEM activities.
d) support pilot projects in specific Welsh regions.

Deadline:-16 November 2010

ESF-Funded Work-Based Learning Programme - Third Call for Proposals Now Open

Funding Source: ESF Convergence Funding – Priority 3

Summary:

The University of Glamorgan’s Work-Based Learning (WBL) scheme is one of several multi-million pound HE initiatives at different stages of assessment that aim to deliver higher-level skills in line with the key Welsh sectors identified by WAG:

Foundation Degrees (FD) – Pan Wales: UOG-led

Work-Based Learning (WBL) – Pan Wales: UOG-led

Access to Masters (ATM) – West Wales & the Valleys: Swansea-led

Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS) – West Wales & the Valleys: Bangor-led

This is the first time that the Welsh HE sector has collaborated on such a scale, and it is hoped that this will result in a step-change in collaborative activity across the sector.

WBL programme’s participants will obtain higher-level skills that will enhance their career opportunities, creating a long-term positive impact on the Welsh economy and skills base. WBLs are an ideal stepping-stone qualification, which is seen as particularly suited to part-time learners in employment.

Following the successful of first two calls for proposals where a number of WBLs were given the go-ahead by the Programme Management Board, we are opening a third call for proposals. We are inviting institutions to submit a Project Idea Form (PIF) by 7th January 2011, which is aimed at providing the Programme Board with enough information to judge whether the submission of a detailed project delivery plan (PDP) is appropriate.

Please note the following ESF stipulations for the FD and WBL Programmes:

1. Project participants (students) must be in (private sector) employment, and must live and/or work in the Convergence area of Wales;

2. Projects must address one or more of the following WAG Ministerial Advisory Group private sector priorities:
Energy; Environmental management; Telecoms & ICT; Bioscience; Health; Financial Services; Creative Industries; Automotive and Aerospace; Construction; Leisure and Tourism

For further information on the above, or on the funding process for the programme and to get the PIF template, please email the WBLProgramme Team, or telephone ext. 2459.

EU Funding for Research - Increase your chances of success!

The UK Research Office (UKRO) – the Brussels-based office of Research Councils UK – is visiting the University of Glamorgan on Tuesday 23rd November 2010 for a day of presentations and discussions about research opportunities through European funding.

UKRO is the UK’s leading information and advice service on EU funding for research and higher education. Based in Brussels since 1984, UKRO is jointly funded by all seven UK Research Councils to promote effective UK participation in EU funded research programmes and other related activities.

The event which will be held in the Glamorgan Conference Centre (GCC) will be divided into two sessions. The morning session (9.30-12.00) will provide staff with an introduction and overview of the latest opportunities in the Seventh Framework Programme for research and technological development (FP7), which is the European Union’s chief instrument for funding research over the period 2007 to 2013. This will be followed by a networking lunch and an afternoon surgery session (1.00-3.30), whereby staff can meet with Inga Benner, UKRO key speaker and European & External Resource Office (EuRO) staff to discuss potential project ideas and opportunities.

The need to actively generate Research funding is becoming even more important in the context of planned government cuts to the HE sector and the consequent squeeze on UK-based research funding resources. This event provides the perfect opportunity to familiarise yourself with the funding available, as well as the wealth of support on offer from EuRO to help you prepare bids and find partners.

Further details on the event will be communicated shortly so if you’re interested in attending please hold the date in your diaries!!

UK-US New Partnership Fund

Summary:
PMI2 are pleased to invite joint proposals from UK and US higher education institutions to develop partnerships. Funds are intended to stimulate the growth of a new variety of UK-US strategic partnerships between HEIs or for the growing of UK-US cooperation involving HEIs in third countries.

The aims of the UK-US New Partnership Fund are to:

- Grow mutually beneficial partnerships between UK and US HEIs.

- Provide opportunities to deepen and broaden existing co-operation between UK and US HEIs.

- Introduce new HE institutions to UK-US partnerships including from a greater diversity of locations in both countries.

- Pilot new UK and US partnerships in third countries.

- Build the basis for future sustainable partnerships between the collaborating institutions.

- Strengthen the skills of higher education staff in both countries in developing and delivering partnerships.

There are two strands for which proposals are welcome:

Strand 1) Strategic partnerships

A strategic partnership is one that is broad-based and encompasses a range of collaborative activities. These might involve a combination of two or more of the following:

- Developing student, staff and researcher mobility: including for US study abroad students, UK student mobility, researcher, faculty and academic exchanges

- New research co-operation, particularly interdisciplinary

- Collaborative degrees and other approaches to learning and teaching, (including dual, joint and double degrees)

Strand 2) Multi-Country Partnerships

There is a need to stimulate the development of new partnerships between UK and US HEIs that involve another country (these partnerships could be for research cooperation, learning and teaching, student exchange and joint or dual degrees). Innovative proposals are invited that might involve any country as a member of the partnership.

Subject priorities

Priority will be given to science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical science disciplines; however they also welcome proposals that introduce innovative, including inter-disciplinary, approaches.

Need a partner?

Some US institutions have identified themselves as looking for partner institutions in the UK through the British Council’s Register of Interest. Profiles of these US Higher Education Institutions are available to download: US partner list

Sum: UK-US New Partnership Fund is intended to be for pump-priming and is limited to a maximum of £20,000 per project.

Deadline: 1730 GMT on 31 October 2010.

Funder Link: PMI2 Opportunities

Any application for external funding requires the completion of an External Funding Application Submission (EFAS) form, to create a form please visit EFAS

EuRO recommends that anyone who is interested in accessing EU funding makes contact with the European Office in plenty of time prior to the submission deadline to fully benefit from our professional advice and support.

Bridging the Urban and Rural Divide

Summary: The Research Councils’ Digital Economy (DE) and Energy programmes invite expressions of interest from eligible individuals to attend a workshop to be held in collaboration with The Department of Science and Technology of India (DST) in Nagpur and Wardha, India from 18-21 October 2010.
The aim of the workshop is to stimulate collaborative thinking around the research challenges of making rural living a sustainable option in both countries in preparation for a joint UK-India call for research proposals. The DE and Energy programmes have allocated up to £6 million, matched by DST (£12 million total) to fund research arising from the call.

The nature of the challenges in this area demands an innovative, multidisciplinary and international approach. Consequently, the aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers from the UK and India from a range of disciplines. Participants will be expected to engage constructively in dialogue with each other through a series of workshop activities and site visits in India.
