What I liked the most about the post is the following idea:

"...the best SEOs don’t talk to their clients about rankings; they talk about the process of making great web sites that earn traffic and convert visitors into customers. It was a great opportunity to get real hands-on experience in Web Analytics and enjoyed every minute of it. I’m glad I did, as it reassured me that I made a good decision when I enrolled and completed the Web Analytics program at UBC and it has encouraged me to learn more about this field and its industry.

By volunteering to work on The Conservation Fund website analysis, I had access to a large data set and some key questions that needed to be answered to help the organization with an upcoming re-design.

I must admit that it was a challenge to dig into the data to find useful information on my first project, but that is why I’m so grateful that Michael Helbling signed up as mentor. He helped me focus on insights that would be the most useful and actionable to the client, leading me into the right path when I was overwhelmed by information overload and a deadline.

It was a privilege to work with Micheal Helbling, an Analysis Exchange mentor with many years of experience. I learned lots of tips from him and I’m definitely looking forward to volunteering more of my time to more good causes so I can get the chance to interact and learn from other knowledgeable and experienced Web Analysts.

If you are new to the Web Analytics field and want to get some hands-on experience don’t hesitate to sign-up for a project. I can guarantee it is a rewarding experience that will help your career and at the same time will give you great sense of accomplishment when you know your efforts can make a difference. I didn't until I read this article and the wikipedia entry:

A QR Code is a matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by QR scanners, mobiles phones with camera, and smartphones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data.

Long story short, if you are walking by on the street and you see a poster and don't understand what is they message it is trying to convey, take a picture of it with your smart-phone to find out what the subliminal message is...

I haven't tried it yet, but will post how to decipher a QR code using an iPhone once I figure out how to do it... My first guess is that there is an app for that... hopefully it's free because I have heard MEC is doing QR codes here in Vancouver already and I want to try taking a picture of one to see what happens and who knows maybe create my own.

Update: I managed to find a free iPhone app and here is a video I found on YouTube that shows you how it works.

The Whole World is Analytics

To read more about what can it be done with data, visit A smart planet.

IBM buys Coremetrics

For those of you skeptical about the importance of Web Analytics, I hope that the latest news in the world of acquisitions confirms how important Web Analytics has become. If you are, you have come to the right place. I was in that situation recently, and to my despair finding a clear step by step tutorial was impossible. I did somehow manage to figure it out on my own and I have decided to share with you how I did it.

What do you need?

A gmail account

Access to modify your site's homepage html code

Now here we go with the instructions:

Step 1. Go to the Google webmaster tools homepage
Step 2. Log in using you gmail account credentials
Step 3. Click on the Add a site button
Step 4. Enter the homepage of the site with the URL you want to remove on the field that is asking for the URL of the site you would like to manage
For example if you want to remove the page: http://www.mysite.com/randomdirectory/pageshouldnotbelisted.html you will have to enter http:// www.mysite.com
Step 5. Now we have to verify ownership of the site using the meta tag verification method (you can use the other method if you wish to)
Copy the meta tag provided and paste it into your site's home page. It should go in the section, before the first section.
Step 6. Now let's go back to the Google webmaster tools interface and click on the Verify button
Step 7. If verification is successful, you are sent to the Dashboard page
Step 8. On the left navigation menu click on Site configuration > Crawler access
Step 9. Click on the Generate robots.txt tab
Step 10. Set the default crawler access to Allow all. The reason for this is because you still want most of your pages to appear on search results
Step 11. Specify additional rules using the drop-downs provided
Step 12. Copy the text generated on the Download your new robots.txt file box and paste it on a simple text editor like Notepad
Step 13. Save it as robot.txt
Step 14. Upload it to the root directory of your website, this is the same directory where homepage html file resides
Step 15. Now if you are securing the files that you don't want listed on the search results, then this is the last chance to do it. If you are not going to secure the files, then delete them.
Note: that delete them does not remove the files from the search result, as you might have noticed already and perhaps that is the reason why you are reading this post
Step 16. We are not at the step where we request Google to remove the URL from their listings. Go to the Remove URL tab (next to the Generate robots.txt tab, which is the tab we were just working on.
Step 17. Click on the New removal request button
Step 18. Enter the URL you would like to remove, this field is case-sensitive and for the removal to be successful the URL you enter must be a subpage within the site. In other words, you can only remove pages that have the homepage URL as a prefix. So if you want to remove the page http://www.mysite.com/test.php from Google listings, then you need only to enter test.html on this field
Step 19. Click continue
Step 20. Select a reason for your request
Step 21. Check the checkbox stating that the page returns a 404/410 or has been blocked by robots.txt or a noindex meta tag (we took care of this on Step 15)
Step 22. Click Submit Request
Step 23. You will now see a message at the top highlighting that your request has been added for removal. You can now go back to Step 17 if you have any more removal requests
Step 24. Wait for the request(s) to be process. You can come back Site configuration > Crawler access > Remove URL anytime to check on the status of you request
Step 25. Once your requests have been processed they will show as removed and a Reinclude button will appear next to them in case you change your mind and want them back on the search results (just in case you didn't delete the files)

Hope you find this information useful, and feel free to contact me if you require any assistance.

The history and evolution of email

Check out this cool info-graphic created by Focus on how email is used as a mean of communication. However, I get really frustrated when I open up an email and I can't read what's in it on my iPhone.

This post is a note to companies sending automated or non-automated email marketing campaigns that are not readable on mobile devices: Please upgrade your system so that it sends emails readable on mobile devices to avoid loosing customers and to increase the effectiveness of your online marketing efforts.

The number of mobile users is on the rise at an exponential rate and it is expected to reach 5.8 billion in 2013, according to mobiThinking. Unless you make changes to the formatting of your email campaigns on mobile devices, your customers will feel they are being spammed when they receive an email from your company and will eventually unsubscribe or flag you as spam.

Thus, perhaps if you haven't started doing it, check how the emails you are about to send look like on mobile devices before they get sent. If you find out or are already aware that are not readable on smart phones, spend the money to upgrade the system that sends them automatically or notify the person or company responsible to send these so that they can act upon immediately to improve the performance of your marketing efforts.

It doesn't have to be a fancy display, all that matters is that the text and links for conversion get displayed.

Install Windows 7 using Parallels on your Mac

Here is a link to a must read for anyone trying to figure out how easy is it to install Windows 7 as a virtual machine on Mac OS X using Parallels:

How to install Windows 7 in OS X using Parallels Desktop – a complete walk-through

There is no need for a partition and Bootcamp using the instructions above.

Note: If you are like me and stops reading instructions once you think you have it all figured out, I recommend you go through these steps until you reach the last one.
