EDUCATION IDIOMS - LEARN SOME USEFUL IDIOMS FOR DESCRIBING EDUCATION

MEANING: If a group of people “brainstorm”, they have a meeting and think of ideas for something.
EXAMPLE: “We got into groups to brainstorm ideas for the end-of-term trip.”

MEANING: If you “drop out”, you stop going to school or college. A dropout” refers to the person.
EXAMPLE: “She dropped out of university because she was offered a part in a film.”

MEANING: If you say you’re going to “hit the books”, you mean that you’re going to study a lot.

EXAMPLE: “After the long summer holiday, it was finally time to hit the books.”

MEANING: To learn something so you can repeat it without thinking or looking.
EXAMPLE: “We used to learn a lot of poems by heart in our English class.”

MEANING: If you “pass an exam with flying colours”, you pass it easily and with a high score.
EXAMPLE: “She passed the entrance exam with flying colours.”

MEANING: If you “skive off”, you don’t go to a school.
EXAMPLE: “He skived off because there was a history exam and he hadn’t studied for it.”

MEANING: If the teacher asks for a “show of hands”, he/she asks everyone to put up their hands in order to vote on something, etc.
EXAMPLE: “The teacher asked for a show of hands to see how many people had been to the city.”

MEANING: Someone who copies another person’s work, or the way they dress, live, etc.
EXAMPLE: “He’s a copycat – he sat next to me in the test and copied everything I wrote!”

MEANING: To start thinking seriously about something in order to find a solution to it.
EXAMPLE: “We need to decide what we’re going to do, so get your thinking caps on.”

MEANING: If students are in “single file”, they’re in a line with one person standing behind another.

EXAMPLE: “The pupils had to line up in single file before going into the hall.”

MEANING: “Sweet” food has got a lot of sugar in it.
EXAMPLE: “This cake is just too sweet for my liking.”

MEANING: A strong flavour that is the opposite of sweet.
EXAMPLE: “I can’t drink this black tea without sugar in it – it’s too bitter.”

MEANING: “Spicy” food has spices in it like cumin, curry powder, chilli powder, pepper, etc.
EXAMPLE: “The meat was served with a spicy tomato and coriander sauce.”

MEANING: “Hot” food is very spicy and makes your mouth burn when you eat it.
EXAMPLE: "This curry is really hot. I ate just a little bit and had to drink a pint of water."

MEANING: “Salty” food has got a lot of salt in it.
EXAMPLE: “The soup was nice, but it was really salty.”

MEANING: “Greasy” food has a lot of oil in it.
EXAMPLE: “The pizza is really greasy. Look at all the oil that’s come off it.”

MEANING: If you’re “full”, you’ve eaten enough food, and you can’t eat any more.
EXAMPLE: “I’m full after that four-course dinner. I couldn’t eat another thing.”

MEANING: If you’re “starving”, you’re very hungry.
EXAMPLE: “What’s for lunch? I’m starving!”

MEANING: If fruit is ripe, it’s ready to eat.
EXAMPLE: “I don’t think this avocado is ripe. It’s still really hard.”

MEANING: “Crispy” vegetables are nice and hard.
EXAMPLE: “The stir-fry had chicken, noodles and lots of crispy vegetables.”

MEANING: A “lean” piece of meat has no fat on it.
EXAMPLE: “We bought a lean cut of meat from the butcher’s.”

MEANING: “Succulent” food is soft and pleasant to the tongue.
EXAMPLE: “The lunch consisted of a succulent baked salmon with sautéed potatoes and baby carrots.”

Phrasal Verbs - Learn about Phrasal Verbs

Phrasal verbs are formed by a verb and a particle (often a preposition or adverb):
a) We got up at 6am.
b) I woke up before him.

The meaning of some phrasal verbs is clear from the verb:
a) I paid off all my debts.
b) They went away for the weekend.

But other times, it isn’t so obvious:
a) She made up the story. [make up = invent]
b) They put off the meeting. [put off = delay]

As far as I know, he's still hanging around with those rock musicians. He's been attending their
rehearsals, hoping to pick up a few pointers.

People with the same interests do tend to associate with each other. But I agree with you;
