We took out some references to older pop culture moments (remember when Pippa Middleton upstaged Kate's wedding?), removed referrals to those who are no longer with us (R.I.P. "Brangelina"), and said goodbye to TV shows of the past (sorry "Duck Dynasty", "Fear Factor" and "Toddlers and Tiaras" fans). And perhaps, most importantly, scrubbed out references to any living males who might find themselves embroiled in a scandal at some point. So it's adios to awards named after Justin Beiber, Lil' John, Hugh Grant, Howard Stern, Jerry Springer, and yes - even Tom Hanks.

Why the Updates?

Because comedy is tough.

And it's easy to offend.

That's why I've done the hard work of coming up with unique wording for over 400 funny award certificates.

But use your own judgement. I've made it easy to tweak the award titles and descriptions if there's any concern at all that someone might get upset.

Remember that it's OK to laugh at ourselves.

Teacher Appreciation Week is here! Also known as National Teacher Week, it occurs on the first full week of May in the United States and Canada. Teacher Appreciation Day occurs on Tuesday of Teacher Appreciation Week.

If you want to do it up right, see if you can top the fine folks over at "Sweeten Your Day Events". In 2014, they threw a themed Hollywood Teacher Appreciation Week at their school, entitled "You're a Star".

Here are some of the things they did to make the teachers feel special:

"One of the most popular things that the teachers look forward to during this week are the door decorations!
About 2 weeks before the event I put up flyers around the school to get the students and teachers excited.
We also sent home reminders sheets to all the students of the daily activities so they could come prepared.
Each day we treated the teachers and staff with food or refreshments in the lounge to enjoy.
Each morning we had the principal play a little Oscar music and announce a few funny teacher awards over the speakers. It was a great way to spotlight everyone. Here were some of my favorites..."

Funny Employee Awards vs. Funny Office Awards

If you're trying to decide between "101 Funny Employee Awards" and "101 Funny Office Awards", you're in the right place. This is comedian Larry Weaver and I created them both.

The short answer is this: if you work in an office, get "101 Funny Office Awards". Otherwise, get "101 Funny Employee Awards."

Now the long answer.

The first collection of funny awards I released was way back in 2007. The title back then was "Funny Employee Awards: Your Complete Guide to Organizing a Humorous, Entertaining, and Rewarding Recognition Ceremony." This original collection had a decidedly office-oriented slant. It's safe to say that all of the awards were inspired from my days toiling away in an office environment.

Then I took the show on the road.

Shortly after releasing the first collection of awards, I created a live comedy show based on the book. I would (and still do) travel around the country hosting a funny award show for companies and organizations.

A lot of the organizations were decidedly blue-collar. I'm talking warehouses, distribution centers, firefighters, EMS workers, food service, catering, truckers, hairdressers... the list goes on. For most of these organizations, the majority of employees simply didn't work in an office.

Based on demand, I released a collection of "Funny Teacher Awards." But I knew I had to do more.

A few years back I created a more generic collection called "Funny Awards Certificates". These were meant to be a catch-all collection for friends, family, teammates and coworkers. That still didn't quite solve the problem, so I bundled that collection with the employee awards to create a "Funny Office Awards" bundle.

But all of that was just a delay to the inevitable. I had to break out office awards from employee awards.

Finally, in the Summer of 2013, I sent my calls to voicemail, shut down Outlook and started writing new awards. I didn't know at the time that I would end up rewriting ALL of my collections - ending up with four collections of 101 awards (that's 404 funny awards for you non-math majors).

Today, the newest collection of "101 Funny Office Awards" are for office workers and the totally revamped collection of "101 Funny Employee Awards" have a more generic slant that can apply to any workers in any job.

As someone who has hosted dozens of workplace awards ceremonies across the U.S., I couldn't' agree more. I always encourage the organizations to kick off the funny work certificates presentation with someone in a managerial role. It lets workers know that it's OK to laugh at the awards.

The best funny workplace awards are the ones that hit closest to home. The article points out, "Whether it’s the suck-up employee, the bottleneck-causing boss or the showman-style CEO, every workplace has its foibles."

My suggestion for creating funny award categories for work is to start with the biggest "characters" in your workplace. Pick out the co-workers who will relish the spotlight. Make a list of what are they known for. Examples include always being late, eating other people's food, and extending meetings. Use these characteristics to create your list of funny work award ideas.

The article does caution that some topics should be off limits. "Of course, some things should not be made light of in the workplace—a person’s faith, ethnicity or sexual preference. Jokes on these issues may provoke hurt or cause harm. When in doubt, keep your mouth shut."

Does anyone know who came up with the idea for paper plate awards? Apparently the concept involves a paper plate, a Sharpie (magic marker), and... well, that's it. You come up with a funny award idea and write it on the paper plate. Is that it?

I guess you could break out some glitter or stickers if you're feeling fancy.

I'd love to know the origin of paper plate awards. Did they start at camp or scouts? Aren't they pretty much just a variation of funny superlatives and most likely to awards? If you have any insight, please post it in the comments section.
