Their movies are very romantic, innocent and unlike many Chinese fairy tales about immortals that end bad, most Korean dramas end positively. The historical dramas send you to the parallel universe of the Joseon dynasty and give insights on how people used to be educated, dressed, build and decorate their homes, all sprinkled with a bit of palace intrigue and adventure.

# Cook Korean!

If there is something I miss most from the Korean culinary scene, it is the spicy kimchi, plus their chicken galbi, surrounded by tons of melted cheese.

And I found this lovely book that is made in such way one can learn about Korean ingredients and food culture, try out around 60 recipes and have a Korean meal made at home. It is a combination of cookbook and comic book, graphics bringing Joseon cooking culture and modern food too, into your kitchen.

# Draw Your Own Manhwa

Manhwa is the Korean drawing style corresponding to Japanese Manga.

It is very different and this book clearly states the differences between the two. However, really nice video tutorials can be found on SmoochiBird’s channel on Youtube: tips on drawing characters for webtoons, writing dialogues between characters and promoting this art.

Manhwa has more personality, a more natural look and it is more expressive, diminishing the focus on the popular big Manga eyes. Below, the first Manhwa ever, at that time, in black and white only. You can get a drawing notebook here.

# Spend Time Video Gaming

Playing video games is a total frenzy in South Korea. In 2021,, almost 71% of the population played games!

There are gaming Cafes with hundreds of computers where young people meet, drink, eat and play together. I visited one while I was in Busan and the only impediment was the language. Everything was in Korean.

# Make Squid Game Lollipops

Downtown Seoul, on the streets surrounding Myeongdong Cathedral, vendors with tiny stalls prepare on the spot the most famous sugar candy of our times. Following Squid Game, the Netflix series, a traditional Korean lollipop, dalgona, has regained a place in contemporary world, making its fast way to the international scene.

I must admit I never managed to separate the parts correctly. And I lost countless pieces on the streets of Seoul But it’s so fun!

Officers were called to break up a quite interesting brawl Thursday evening after two seniors got into a physical struggle during a “presumed innocent” Bingo game.

How many of the Bingo news start differently than this? Few, I tell you. But that’s not all Bingo has to offer. A good bingo joke and a few funny pictures should not be overlooked! So here we go.

A wife arrives at home at 3 am. Her husband manages to notice that she is wearing a big diamond ring on her finger, so he asks her how she managed to get that ring. She replies: I won while playing bingo. Please go and fix me the bath tub since I need to relax now.

The next day the same story repeats only that this time she came home with a big and glamorous fur coat. She says Bingo again and then asks for a bath.

The third night the wife comes home with a brand new convertible sports car and she says: “Can you believe it, I managed to win once again at bingo, can you please run me a bath?” She takes off her clothes, goes to the bathroom and she sees that there is only 1 inch of water in the bathtub and asks her husband why there is so little water.

He then answers: “I didn’t want your bingo card to get wet!”

Disappointed by the terms of the unsolicited offer for a credit card from Tinkoff Credit Systems in 2008, a 42-year-old Dmitry Agarkov from the city of Voronezh decided to hand write his own credits terms.

The trick was that Agarkov simply scanned the bank’s document and ‘amended’ the small print with his own terms.

He opted for a 0 percent interest rate and no fees, adding that the customer “is not obliged to pay any fees and charges imposed by bank tariffs.” The bank, however, didn’t read ‘the amendments’, as it signed and certified the document, as well as sent the man a credit card. Under the agreement, the bank OK’d to provide unlimited credit, according to Agarkov’s lawyer Dmitry Mikhalevich talking to Kommersant daily.

“The opened credit line was unlimited. He could afford to buy an island somewhere in Malaysia, and the bank would have to pay for it by law,” Mikhalevich added.

Agarkov also changed the URL of the site where the terms and conditions were published and hedged against the bank’s breaking of the agreement. For each unilateral change in the terms provided in the agreement, the bank would be asked to pay the customer (Agarkov) 3 million rubles ($91,000), or a cancelation fee of 6 million rubles ($182,000).

However, after two years of active use, the bank decided to terminate Agarkov’s credit card  because of overdue payments. In 2012, the bank sued Agarkov for 45,000 rubles ($1,363) – an amount that included the remaining balance, fees, and late payment charges, which violated the actual agreement. The court decided that the agreement Agarkov crafted was valid, and required him to settle only his balance of 19,000 rubles ($575).

The bankers had to admit the mistake, says Agarkov’s representative  Dmitry Mikhalevich.

“They signed the documents without looking. They said what usually their borrowers say in court: ‘We have not read it,’” says Mikhalevich.

Despite the victory, Agarkov decided to sue Tinkoff Credit Systems for fines of 24 million rubles ($727,000) for not honoring the terms of the agreement, and the decision to terminate the contract without paying 6 million rubles ($182,000) fee.

“Our lawyers think, he is going to get not 24 million, but really four years in prison for fraud. Now it’s a matter of principle for @ tcsbank,” founder of the bank Oleg Tinkov tweeted.

“We don’t have small print, everything is clear and transparent. Try to open a card – then we’ll talk. Stealing is a sin – in my opinion, of course. Not all in Russia think so,” Tinkov tweeted.

The next hearing will be held in September.

And let me just say he aged a whole lot better than his clothes did.

It began as an accident — a product of his sparse wardrobe back in the day.

“I was so embarrassed when I got the school pictures back that second year and realized I had worn the very same thing as the first year,” said Dale, 63.

But his wife, Cathy, dared him to do it a third year. Then Dale thought five would be funny. “After five pictures,” he said, “it was like: ‘Why stop?”

So he just never did, right on through this, his final year as every kid’s favorite physical education teacher at Prestonwood Elementary in the Richardson school district.

Dale and Cathy, 62, met in 1973 as first-year teachers at Titche Elementary in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas. He remembers getting the announcement that school-picture day was coming and that teachers should “wear something nice.”

In his case, that was the patterned, pointy-collared shirt with matching wool vest he had just bought at Sanger-Harris in Big Town Mall. “I really didn’t have anything else,” said the man who got to wear coaching shorts almost every day of his career.

In the later years of his tradition, Dale carried the disco-era ensemble to school and put it on just long enough for the photo. Still, I congratulated him on being able to button up the shirt at all.

“Uh, yeah, if I suck it in a little,” he confessed.

The fashion world will probably survive the retirement of Dale’s shirt and sweater vest. But his departure is a real loss for education.

“He took his job so seriously in teaching good sportsmanship — both in athletics and in life,” Prestonwood principal Pam Aitken said. “He taught a lot of kids to be fair and respectful of others. That’s a great legacy to leave.”

Here’s a measure of the respect for Dale. The gym at Prestonwood now has a big sign over the door: “Irby Gymnasium.”

Not only did Dale retire this year but so did Cathy. The language arts teacher had most recently served as assistant principal at Lister Elementary in Garland. “We’re going to miss it,” she said. “We’re going to miss the kids — and the teachers. But not the red tape and the politics.”

“And not the alarm set at 4:50 a.m.,” added Dale. He helped augment teacher salaries by driving a school bus every morning for the last 36 years.

The Garland couple looks forward to traveling on their schedule, not by the school calendar. They already have a trip to New England planned in September. “Every teacher wants to go see the leaves in the fall,” Cathy said.

They also relish trying a new daily routine.

“We have promised ourselves we’re not going to eat lunch in 20 minutes,” Cathy said with a laugh.

As for the shirt and sweater vest, Dale figures they will spend a quiet retirement in the back of his closet.

“I don’t think the Smithsonian would want them,” he said.

A two-headed turtle has hatched at the San Antonio Zoo and officials have named her Thelma and Louise.

The female Texas cooter arrived June 18 and will go on display Thursday at the zoo’s Friedrich Aquarium.

Zoo spokeswoman Debbie Rios-Vanskike (van SKYKE’) said Wednesday that the two-headed turtle appears healthy and is able to swim and walk. She says experts at the zoo don’t foresee any health issues for Thelma and Louise, named for the female duo in the 1991 Oscar-winning road movie of the same name.

The San Antonio Zoo is no stranger to two-headed reptiles. The facility was home to a two-headed Texas rat snake named Janus from 1978 until the creature’s death to 1995.

Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who owns London’s Savoy hotel, claims US publication undervalued his wealth by $9.6bn

Saudi Arabia’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, one of the world’s wealthiest businessmen who owns assets including London’s Savoy hotel, has launched a libel action against the business magazine Forbes over claims it underestimated his fortune by $9.6bn.

Alwaleed, who is often described as the most influential businessman in the Middle East, vowed to sever ties with Forbes in March when its coveted annual Rich List valued him at $20bn – placing him as the 26th most wealthy billionaire on the planet.

The prince insisted he was worth closer to $30bn and accused the respected US magazine of being “demonstrably biased” against Saudi Arabian firms.

Now Alwaleed has taken his complaints about the magazine to the high court in London, filing a defamation claim against the Forbes publisher, its editor Randall Lane and two of its journalists, according to court documents seen by the Guardian.

Through his Saudi-based investment vehicle, Kingdom Holding, Alwaleed owns large stakes in Apple, Twitter and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation and has built a formidable property portfolio, including the Savoy Hotel in London and the Plaza in New York.

Alwaleed is known for his opulent lifestyle – a gold throne sits in the centre of his private Boeing 747 jet, dubbed “the flying palace” – but his displays of grandeur rarely spill into public disputes with the media.

Forbes said it calculated his fortune based on the underlying value of Kingdom Holding’s investments, rather than the price of its shares on the Saudi stock exchange, the Tadawul. The magazine said the company’s share price inexplicably rose each year as it was compiling data for its Rich List and quoted a former Alwaleed executive who described the Tadawul as a gambling site.

Forbes also claimed it had been subject to “intermittent lobbying, cajoling and threatening” by Alwaleed’s coterie of advisors in a bid to boost his ranking on the annual list.

In a Sunday Telegraph interview last month, the 58-year-old attacked Forbes and said: “They are accusing me of market manipulation. I am not pursuing it because of my wealth, but because they are accusing Saudi Arabia of being manipulated because we have no casinos. This is unacceptable.”.

Forbes said in a statement in response to the libel action: “We’re very surprised at claims that Prince Alwaleed has decided to sue Forbes, particularly if he has done so in the United Kingdom, a jurisdiction that has nothing whatsoever to do with our recent story which raised questions about his claims about his wealth.

“The Prince’s suit would be precisely the kind of libel tourism that the UK’s recently-passed libel reform law is intended to thwart. We would anticipate that the London high court will agree. Forbes stands by its story.”

Legal experts said Alwaleed will have to prove that his reputation in England and Wales suffered “serious harm”, if the lawsuit is eventually tried at the high court. He will also have to show that the Forbes publication caused Kingdom Holding serious financial loss.

Richard Green, a partner and head of regulation at the law firm Hill Dickinson, said the case would cement London’s reputation as the libel capital of the world. “While I accept that Forbes magazine is published in England and Wales both in hard copy and on the internet, it is difficult to see why this is the most appropriate forum for the case other than its perceived pro-claimant reputation,” he added.

“Libel tourism is common and is widely credited with damaging freedom of speech in the defendant’s home jurisdiction.”

However, Sarah Webb, a partner at law firm Payne Hicks Beach, said Alwaleed has a “substantial international reputation” but added that there were protections for media defendants to prevent so-called libel tourism.

“He will have to satisfy the court that England and Wales is clearly the more appropriate forum for his dispute and this will tie in again to the ‘serious harm’ test [to his reputation],” she said.

A spokesman for Kingdom Holding said Alwaleed was “examining all of his legal options” but declined to comment further. Kobre and Kim, the law firm acting for Alwaleed in the claim, declined to comment.

While the Android version is still available, iPhone users are directed to this page, which promises that the app will be back “soon.”

While Apple is certainly no stranger for kicking apps out of the store that seem to violate various rules on nudity, pornography and sexuality — whether deserved or not — I don’t think the substance of the app is necessarily the problem. Grindr has had an iPhone app for years and it’s not substantively different from BWF, aside from the direct Facebook connection.
