"The complaints by tourists about the taxi drivers' behaviour are more than toilets now, so in that context the taxi drivers are worse than dirty toilets," cabinet minister Nazri Aziz said.

"People are complaining about the taxi drivers overcharging, being impolite and not using their meters, forcing the tourists to bargain with them," he told AFP.

"This is the third-world taxi driver mentality. Even in China now, taxi drivers can no longer (haggle), they just have to take the passengers, no questions asked.

"It's not that all taxi drivers behave like that, it's just a small group of them but that is already giving Malaysia a bad name," said Nazri, who is minister in the prime minister's department.

Complaints about taxis are common the world over, but it has become a hot topic in Malaysia where frustrations are vented on blog sites and in letters to newspapers.

'King of Pop' Michael Jackson died today at the UCLA Medical Center after he was brought in by paramedics who found him not breathing at his home, according to various reports.
Ed Winter, the assistant chief coroner for Los Angeles County, confirmed his office had been notified of the death and would handle the investigation. Medical report
Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Steve Ruda said earlier that paramedics were called to Jackson's home at 12:26 p.m. They performed CPR and took him to the medical center. He was in a deep coma and was later pronounced dead by doctors.
Separately, the celebrity gossip site Radio.com reported that Jackson apparently suffered a heart attack.
A Jackson family member, who was not identified, told TMZ the singer was in "really bad shape." Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, who was in Las Vegas, was quoted as saying he had heard his son was "not doing well."
Michael Jackson's mother and at least some of his brothers were reportedly gathered at UCLA Medical Center awaiting news on Jackson's condition.

Reeve's Superman costume up for auction

MELBOURNE (AFP) - - A Superman costume worn by the late Christopher Reeve will go under the hammer in Australia this month, auction house Bonhams and Goodman said Wednesday.
Auctioneer Giles Moon said the costume, complete with the famous "S" logo, was being sold by an avid film buff who bought it in London five years ago.
He said it was expected to fetch 15,000-20,000 dollars (11,400-15,200 US) when it is auctioned on May 24.
"Superman costumes rarely appear on the market and are much sought after by collectors," Moon said. "Complete costumes have been known to sell for in excess of 100,000 dollars at auction."

With Jenson Button still the man to beat, I ask, was the Bahrain GP his best drive ever? And who, if anybody, can beat him in sunny Spain?

On current form, you still can't look past the Brawn Mercedes team. Fastest in session one, by almost half a second over the chasing pack; in the 'reborn' Jenson Button's hands, with Barrichello up there in session two.

Despite all the efforts of the other teams to catch-up, Brawn GP still find themselves ahead of the rest, and to be honest, look set for another good weekend. The new cooling implements have solved any issues over engine reliability that meant we didn't really see a true reflection of the teams real pace in Bahrain, but even so, we did see just how good Jenson Button can be with the right car underneath him.

With the team for the first time in Bahrain finding out that F1 wasn't all about being able to control the race from the front (should it remain dry!), Button still proved why his talent has been wasted in bad cars over the last few years.

A breathe taking manoeuvre on a KERS boosted Lewis Hamilton and a swerve pit stop strategy by Ross Brawn and Andrew Shovlin, added to by some stupendous driving by Jenson led to the team to unquestionably; their finest win yet.

LONDON - A son of world auto racing boss Max Mosley has been found dead in his London home, police and the racing federation said Wednesday.

The body of 39-year-old Alexander Mosley was found in his west London apartment Tuesday afternoon.

He died of a suspected drug overdose, a London police official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the force was not authorized to disclose details.

Max Mosley has been the president of the FIA, the international automobile federation which governs Formula One racing, since 1993.

"The FIA extends sincere condolences to the Mosley family on the sad news of the death of Alexander Mosley," the Paris-based federation said. "Our thoughts are with Alexander's family and friends, and we would request that the media respect the Mosley family's privacy at this difficult time."

Mosley called off plans to travel to this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

Former Formula One team boss Eddie Jordan described Alexander Mosley as a "hugely clever and talented computer expert."

"It's totally tragic, he was such a bright boy," Jordan said. "I'm devastated for them."

Max Mosley and his wife, Jean, have another son, 37-year-old Patrick.

Max Mosley, the son of former British fascist leader Oswald Mosley, was at the center of a media frenzy last year when a tabloid newspaper reported he took part in a Nazi-themed sadomasochistic orgy with five prostitutes in London. A video of the incident was circulated on the Internet.

Mosley successfully sued the News of the World for invasion of privacy, and Britain's High Court ruled there had been no Nazi connection to the sex session.

Mosley told the court last year that the story had devastated his family.

WHAT IS IT?

Swine influenza is a common and sometimes fatal respiratory disease among pigs, first identified in 1930, that is caused by a Type A influenza virus. Normally the disease is specific only to pigs. But sometimes pigs can harbour more than one flu virus at one time, which enables the pathogens to mix genes. As a result, a new viral strain emerges that can cross the species barrier to humans, starting with people in contact with infected pigs. The latest threat is a strain of the H1N1 type of flu virus.

WHY THE ALARM?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the virus can be contagious among humans in close contact and the outbreak has "pandemic potential," meaning there is risk of a spread across regions or continents. In the past century, novel flu viruses have killed tens of millions of people and cost billions of dollars in economic costs. Worries about a new pandemic have focused in recent years on the H5N1 strain of bird flu, which has killed around 250 people since 2003, mainly in Southeast Asia. But H5N1 is hard to transmit among humans, and its threat has been contained by culling infected poultry.

WHAT ABOUT THE UNKNOWNS?

Experts insist there is no certainty that a pandemic will happen or if so that it will be a mass killer. There are many unknowns about the new strain, especially how easily it spreads between people, how virulent it is or could become. Figuring this out will be the work of gene scientists and epidemiologists.

WHICH COUNTRIES ARE MOST AFFECTED?

Mexico is the epicentre of the outbreak, with 103 confirmed and suspected deaths as of Monday and about 400 people hospitalised. In 10 other countries, there have been 57 confirmed or suspected cases, none of them fatal, among people returning from Mexico. The United States has had 20 confirmed cases, Canada six confirmed cases and Spain one case. Several countries from Colombia to New Zealand are investigating suspected cases.

HOW DOES THE VIRUS SPREAD?

Swine flu is thought to spread like typical flu, i.e. in viral particles expelled in coughs and sneezes that are then breathed in by someone nearby, or deposited on surfaces that are then touched by the hand and transmitted to the mouth, nose or eyes. People with the virus may be able to infect others beginning a day before symptoms develop, and up to seven days or more after becoming sick. Young children may be contagious for somewhat longer.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Sudden fever above 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit), cough, headache, aching joints, nasal congestion, general fatigue and lack of appetite. Some people who have contracted the virus report runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In past cases, swine flu has caused pneumonia and respiratory failure and worsened chronic medical conditions.

Q. What is swine flu?

A. Swine influenza, or flu, is a contagious respiratory disease that affects pigs. It is caused by a type-A influenza virus. Outbreaks in pigs occur year-round.

The most common version is H1N1. The current strain is a new variation of an H1N1 virus, which is a mix of human and animal versions.

Q. Does swine flu affect humans?

A. While the virus causes regular outbreaks in pigs, people usually are not struck by swine flu. However, there have been instances of the virus spreading to people -- and then from one person to another. The only difference is, says the CDC, transmission in the past did not spread beyond three people -- as it has done this time.

The U.S. as an Emerging Market?

Simon Johnson, a prolific academic writer and former Chief Economist of the IMF, has come out with a relatively negative view on the U.S. financial system, both current and past. According to Simon, the personal interlinkages between the political and financial systems in the U.S. are very similar to those in many, if not most, emerging markets. And the policy approach towards solving the financial crisis has been dominated by attempts to minimize the pain for bankers, rather than for the overall economy. The bank-by-bank approach with generous bail-outs, while avoiding more drastic actions that might risk shareholders’ equity stakes and senior manager bonuses, has not really helped so far. In order to really get out of the slump, Simon recommends more decisive action in the banking sector, including temporary nationalization and clean up of banks, but also the breaking-up of the financial oligarchy with its links to the political system.

But here is the difference between the U.S. and emerging markets: while in the latter, international markets and the IMF can help in the reform of both the financial and political systems, the U.S. is too strong and has the luxury of paying its foreign debt in its own currency. So, a rather bleak outlook for the U.S. (Simon sees a Japanese decade ahead for the U.S. ), paradoxically because of and not in spite of having the most powerful economy and government in the world. However, I still have to see a country where the IMF has really recommended (or even managed) to break the political oligarchy.

LONDON (AFP) - - A 47-year-old Scottish charity volunteer has become an unlikely international media sensation after a stunning talent show performance, amid reports she is set to cash in with a quick record deal.
By Thursday, a video clip of Susan Boyle's singing debut on the "Britain's Got Talent" television show last weekend had been viewed by over 12 million people on YouTube, with the numbers rising fast.
US actress Demi Moore was apparently moved to tears by the clip, while the story has been picked up around the world, with US, Australian and other broadcasters reportedly queuing up for interviews.
"Susan has clearly wowed the audience, the judges and the world with a truly fantastic performance," said Tom Kerr, leader of West Lothian council in Scotland where Boyle lives alone with a cat called Pebbles.
The West Lothian Courier, her local paper, added that she was "doing what the Beatles did in the 60s" -- that is, taking the United States by storm, as the Fab Four did four decades ago.
And, while press coverage in Britain was relatively muted, media in the United States are lapping up the story.
Global news channel CNN said it had been flooded with messages about Boyle, who was filmed tucking into a sandwich shortly before taking to the stage.
The San Francisco Chronicle, under the headline "Just Who Is The Singer Susan Boyle?" noted that "Unless you live under a rock, you know about the Scottish woman who has taken the industrialised world by storm."
"UK talent show stunned by Scottish virgin Susan Boyle," ran Australia's Herald Sun newspaper.
In Britain coverage was less high profile -- perhaps because "Britain's Got Talent" airs on private broadcaster ITV and so the story is not highlighted by rival channels.
In the clip, the unglamorous-looking Boyle drew laughter from the audience when she walked on stage, saying she dreamed of emulating West End star Elaine Page.
When she began to sing, however, the panel of three judges led by music guru Simon Cowell was visibly shocked, and the audience in Glasgow rose to its feet, as her voiced soared through "I Dreamed A Dream" from "Les Miserables."
Cowell is already lining up a record deal for her, Britain's Press Association reported, while versions of the Les Miserables song she sang entered the midweek singles chart here and the iTunes chart.
US actress Moore posted the comment "It made me teary" on her Twitter page, after viewing the clip.
Boyle's success -- she is now favourite to win the British talent show -- has drawn comparisons with Paul Potts, an opera-singing mobile phone salesman who won in 2007. Potts went on to have number one albums in 15 countries.
Perhaps inevitably, the story -- in which comment on Boyle's appearance has been prominent -- triggered media soul-searching.
"Is Susan Boyle ugly? Or are we?" wrote Tanya Gold in Britain's Guardian newspaper.
"On Saturday night she stood on the stage... small and rather chubby, with a squashed face, unruly teeth and unkempt hair.

The all-electric automobile is not a new idea: in 1900, a quarter of the cars produced in the United States ran on batteries alone. But when Henry Ford debuted his cheap, gas-powered Model T in 1908, oil quickly became the industry standard. Shai Agassi, 40, a former president at software giant SAP, thinks the electric car deserves to be salvaged from history's dustbin. With his new venture, Better Place, he plans to jump-start the fledgling electric-auto industry by building an entire infrastructure—cars, recharge stations and more—from scratch. Governments in Israel, Denmark, northern and elsewhere have signed on. NEWSWEEK'S Fareed Zakaria spoke to him about the company. Excerpts:
ZAKARIA: What's the idea of Better Place? AGASSI: We looked at the problem of transport from a very different perspective than the automotive sector has in the past. They've all looked at it from the perspective of how to build the car. We looked at it from the perspective of how to run an entire country without oil. You've got to put the infrastructure ahead of the cars. In our case, the infrastructure is a combination of a massive amount of charge spots and the ability to switch batteries in less time than it takes you to fill up with gasoline.
But by building the infrastructure before you have electric cars on the road, aren't you putting the cart before the horse?We wouldn't build the infrastructure if we didn't have a massive carmaker to build cars. Renault-Nissan is the first to build the cars for this infrastructure, and we've coordinated so our infrastructure will be in place when their cars hit the market.

How else have you altered the old transportation model?The second [change we decided on] is that the car and the battery, ownershipwise, have to be separated.
Why is that?You never want to be the guy who bought the previous [year's] battery. We say, you never buy the battery. What you buy is the car. The third change is in the business model. You buy the commute by miles, and commute miles include the battery, the electricity, access to the network and battery-switching. You [sign up for] a contract on a per-mile basis, and you get a rebate based on the length of your contract. That makes the electric car cheaper to acquire than the gasoline counterpart.
Does government have any role in this?Our model is not predicated on government subsidies. What governments can do is they can accelerate adoption. Every government creates a different policy. Israel, our first site, created a tax differential of 60 percent between buying a gasoline car and an electric car. Denmark went up to a 180 percent difference—180 percent tax on gas engines, zero tax on electric.

This all sounds very complicated. What's the status report from Israel and Denmark?Our goal for Israel and Denmark is mass-market access by 2011. In 2010, we have a systems-wide test where we have about 100,000 [recharge] spots already installed, a few thousand cars, a few switch stations already in location, the software's already in place, people are driving on customer contracts and are paying. In 2009, we have a smaller systems test with about 50 cars going around Israel and about 50 cars going around Denmark.

SINGAPORE: An email is going around warning about an impending earthquake and tsunami hitting parts of Asia, including Singapore. It claims that disaster will strike on July 22, the same day as a solar eclipse.
The email says that apart from Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia, the giant wave may also hit countries as far as Japan, Australia and India.
But the credibility of the email is questionable. For one, it is riddled with spelling errors, and two, it does not cite any credible source.
While it is true that a solar eclipse will occur on July 22, experts said there is no connection between an eclipse and an earthquake.
Professor Kerry Sieh, director, Earth Observatory of Singapore, said: "In the last 110 years or so, there have been about 85 really big earthquakes — 8 (on the Richter magnitude scale) or greater. And only two of those occurred on the same day as an eclipse. And even those were a partial eclipse, not a total eclipse. They happened in a different place from where the eclipse happened."
While the professor does not think the email holds water, he warns that research does show that parts of

If the U.N. Security Council takes any action in response to North Korea's weekend rocket launch, Pyongyang will react with "strong steps," a North Korean U.N. envoy said on Tuesday. Skip related content
"If the Security Council, they take any kind of steps whatever, we'll consider this is (an) encroachment on our sovereignty and the next option will be ours," Deputy Ambassador Pak Tok Hun told reporters. "Necessary and strong steps will ... follow that."
The United States, Japan and South Korea say Sunday's launch violated Security Council resolution 1718, imposed in 2006 after North Korea's nuclear test, which bans the firing of ballistic missiles or further nuclear tests by Pyongyang.
They have urged the Security Council to pass a resolution to condemn the violation along with a possible expansion of current U.N. sanctions. But China and Russia, which have veto powers on the council, question whether the launch was a violation and have so far blocked those efforts.
In a rare appearance before reporters at U.N. headquarters, Pak said criticism of the launch was undemocratic.
"It's not fair, it's not fair," he said. "While they themselves launch more than a hundred times the satellites ... we are not allowed to do that. That is not democratic."
He said those who saw the launch as a violation of resolution 1718 were misinformed.
"It's not a violation of the resolution," he said. "We said it's not a missile. This is a peaceful purpose, for the satellite launch. We made it clear before we launched it."
The U.S. military said no part of the Taepodong-2 rocket entered orbit, despite Pyongyang's claim it carried a satellite now transmitting data and revolutionary music as it circles the Earth. Some diplomats have said that North Korea attached a dummy satellite to the missile, but Pak disputed this.
"We say it is a satellite," he said. "We are sure. We made it clear."
A reporter asked the diplomat if Pyongyang expected better relations with U.S. President Barack Obama than with his predecessor George W. Bush, who branded North Korea a member of an "axis of evil" with Iran and pre-war Iraq.
"We still have to wait and see," Pak said.

By withdrawing its offer to buy Sun Microsystems on Sunday 4th. April 2009, IBM has left the future uncertain for a pioneering but struggling Silicon Valley tech company.
After extensive negotiations, the two tech giants had appeared close to finalizing a deal for about $7 billion at the end of last week. But IBM lowered its offer and then withdrew it Sunday, after Sun balked at the price and terms of the sale, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.
Still, the talks may not be over. Ultimatums are not unusual in the final stages of negotiations. The source who spoke to the Mercury News declined to characterize the deal as dead. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the companies have not authorized anyone to discuss the negotiations.
Both companies declined to comment Sunday.
While it's not unusual for such talks to run into snags, especially with a deal of this size, the latest developments left Sun in an awkward position as the stock market opens Monday.
Santa Clara-based Sun's stock was trading below $5 until reports of the possible acquisition leaked last month. It climbed sharply since then, closing Friday at $8.49 amid speculation that a deal might be announced as early as Monday. But in a major sticking point, Sun's board wanted assurances that IBM would see the deal through to completion.
