Creating a Bedroom Sanctuary

When retiring to your bedroom, it should feel like a place you can always be comfortable and secluded from the rest of the house. Everyone needs time to themselves, if only to think about the rest of the day’s events. If your bedroom feels like a place where everyone communes, here are a few ideas on how to create a bedroom sanctuary all your own.

Solitude

When sleeping, you don’t want people running in and out of your room, do you? Solitude is necessary for your bedroom sanctuary to be there just for your use. Close the door, and make this time for yourself. A door is of the utmost importance, and if you do not have one, it is now time to install one. This door does not have to be equipped with a lock, but must close completely to give you the privacy you desire.

Surround Yourself with Pleasance

When decorating your bedroom sanctuary, find things that create a calming effect for you. If you are partial to the simplicity of Asian design, find a room divider with an Asian flair to place in a corner. If your idea of a relaxing atmosphere includes reading quietly to yourself, a bookshelf full of books that you want to read and never have should be installed. Even if you have a small bedroom sanctuary, you can still install the things that will bring you the most joy. If music is your forte, a small radio with a CD rack in the corner can bring the melodic trance of rest that you so desperately need. Regardless of your tastes, there is a décor to suit your bedroom sanctuary.

Color Schemes

Pleasant surroundings can be accomplished most easily with a simple coat of paint. Baby blue and beige have been scientifically proven to be calming colors. This may not be the colors you are looking for, so here are a few ideas on how to determine your room color. If you are partial to pinks, a fuchsia on the bedspreads with a pale pink on the walls will give the eye a contrast, as well as bring out any blue colors in pictures around the room. If you are partial to blues, a midnight blue on the walls with white accents such as pillows or an ecru bedspread will even out the tone to be one deserving of your sanctuary. If you like the color red, go with a brick red on the walls with fire engine red accents on the dresser and bedspread. This will give the overall feeling of depth in the room and will create a romantic setting as well.

Décor

When deciding what to put on the walls, there are so many choices. If your bed has no headboard, now is the time to think about painting a design at the head of the bed to create the illusion of one. Simple 4 inch by 4 inch boxes of alternating color will create the look of a headboard. Wall sconces with simple tea lights or pictures of family members may complete the overall look of your bedroom sanctuary.

Selecting the Perfect Wall Art for Your Home

When decorating your home, wall art is an essential. Even in the midst of the family portraits and degrees, the plaques and accomplishments in your family room, there is something to be said for a good piece of art hung gracefully for all to see. Here are a few tips on how to select the perfect wall art for your home.

Artistry
Artistry refers to the work that was put into the piece of wall art itself. When looking for wall art for your home, it is important to look at the artistry. If you are partial to oils, look for brush strokes in the painting. This will show that it is an authentic piece of art and not a recreation by a lesser artist than who is named.

Subject Matter
It would not be appropriate to have nude figures hanging in a child’s bedroom, so the subject matter of the art should be taken into consideration. If this is to be hung in the family room, all will be invited to see it. So the subject matter should be one of general interest, and be inviting and pleasing to the eye. A beautiful landscape with colors that match your décor is a perfect idea for the family room. For the kitchen area, a simple fruit basket with a wine grove background would be ideal. For a child’s room, their favorite animal could be portrayed in art. Remember that all will see your wall art, so it is important that you select the perfect wall art for that room in your home.

Color Schemes
Many artists from before the 1800’s engage in what is called monochromatic painting. This means that the entire painting is done in one color, and many shades and hues of that color. For instance in a monochromatic painting you would find a navy blue sky with a baby blue ocean view, and sky blue birds flying overhead with teal blue streaks in the clouds in the sky. Granted, my description may not be gorgeous, but monochromaticism is now understood. You may want to opt for a monochromatic painting for a room with many focal points of color. If your family room is painted blue, but has a gray couch and white curtains with dark wood tables, there are many colors to see. This means that a monochromatic painting would help to bring out some of those colors. If monochromatic paintings are chosen, remember to follow the color rules you learned in art. Juxtaposing colors always work best together. If the painting you like is mostly red, the room it is placed in should be blues. If the painting is green, the room and accents it brings out will be orange. If the painting is purple, the room it brings out will be yellow in color.

Remember that regardless of color, subject matter or the room the painting will be shown in, this is your home. The perfect wall art for your home is whatever you want it to be. If this means your grandchildren created a montage of pictures, then so be it. You should be comfortable with whatever choice you make.

Kid Friendly Furniture Furniture

When shopping for furniture, many parents are determined to find materials that are kid friendly and won’t cost a fortune to own. There are materials made specifically for the parent looking for kid friendly furniture, and here are a few instances that will help you on your search.

Durapella

Durapella materials look and feel like suede furniture, but are water and stain resistant. This does not mean that it will never get ruined, but will resist small spills and accidents. Crayons and markers will demolish Durapella materials, but with a type of Scotch Guard applied, it will be more resistant. A damp rag with no soap will normally clean anything on the surface. This material should not be cleaned with conventional cleansers, but professionally cleaned only. Durapella comes in a variety of colors including and not limited to brown hues, blues and blacks. These colors make it harder to see stains and damage, therefore this is the number one choice for kid friendly furniture.

Denim

Denim choices are the second favorite among parents, because of the kid friendly appearance and cleaning options. The ease of cleaning includes using a damp rag or upholstery leaner on the surface to remove any stain or spill. When pre-treated with a Scotch Guard, stains and spills are less likely to be noticed. Home cleaning is even easier when the option of removing the cushion covers is apparent, found by zippers in the rear of the cushions. Simply wash on the delicates cycle of your washing machine, and do not use any type of fabric softener, or the guard on the material will no longer be valid. Dry only if there is no rubber backing on the inside of the cushion cover. Drying this material with a rubber backing will create weak spots and possible cracks in the rubber, therefore making small spills or stains harder to control when the cover is on the cushion.

Plastic Cushion Covers

Those all too disliked plastic cushion covers that your grandmother used to have on her couch are making a comeback for parents of the rambunctious child. Kid friendly furniture is more expensive to replace than it is to spend the average $50.00 to use the plastic cushion covers of the past. These make clean up of any spill the easiest task. Simply use a damp rag to wipe up the spill, and your worries are gone. Resistant to crayon, paint, markers, juice, food and diaper accidents, this is the most cost efficient option available.

Painted Wood

For the kid’s rooms, wood furniture such as tables and chairs with a painted finish are quite easy to clean, and are resistant to markers and crayons as well. A damp rag with a general household cleanser will remove any play time accidents your child may have. This is especially significant if your child takes lunch or snacks in their room. The chairs are painted as well, so that any food or juice will not stain the wood finish beneath. For play time, this is the ideal kid friendly furniture option.

Lighting Up Your Life: Five Ways to Decorate With Lighting

When you are feeling sick of the look of your house and ready for a change but can’t quite afford to upgrade furniture, there is a quick and easy solution that won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Change the lighting. Whether you add a single accent lamp or add completely new track lighting, switching up the lights in a room can give it a whole new feel without the added price tag. Here are some simple ideas for a quick lighting update that can be done in any room.

1. Add a new accent lamp. Accent lamps are a simple and affordable way to change the look of a room. Every spot from the living room end tables to the reading corner to the bedroom nightstands could be a potential location for an accent lamp. They come in virtually every size and in every style of décor so you are bound to find one that’s perfect for your space. The best part about accent lamps is that you can definitely find them for under $100, making them an extremely affordable upgrade.

2. Update an old set. If a couple hundred dollars to replace your living room lamp set is just too much for your budget right now, you can try updating your existing lamps and save a whole bunch of money. Try buying a basic lamp base—you can find these for as cheap as ten bucks—and jazz it up with a beautiful shade. You can find these anywhere and this also allows you to customize your lamps perfectly. Likewise, you could keep your shades and simply replace the base of your existing lamps. Mixing and matching your own lamps is a great way to save money. It’s a bit more work but worth the effort and savings in the end.

3. Go for drama. One of the most dramatic ways to update a dining room is to add a gorgeous drop chandelier. There are hundreds of options on the market, allowing you the freedom to choose if you want to dress up your space or keep it casual. Choose from elegant glass drops, rustic wrought iron work, or clean and sleek pendant lighting. No matter what the look, adding a new chandelier to your dining space is an easy and affordable way to change the entire look of the room.

4. Make it modern. Another great way to change to look of any room is to give the lighting a little modern update. Adding track lighting to a kitchen can instantly update the space, just as putting a funky, modern desk lamp in your office space will. From floor lamps to pendant lights to wall sconces, there are many incredible modern lighting options on the market, making it easy for you to give your home a chic new edge.

In an economy like the one we live in today, it can be tough to justify spending thousands of dollars on upgrades to our homes. Rather than go for broke, many Americans are looking for simpler, more affordable options to give their living space the look of new without the high-ticket price to match. Changing the lighting in your home is one easy and cost-effective way to get a quick updated look.

Kid friendly furniture

Kids are wonderful, but they are also wonderfully messy and can be fabulously destructive. It is for this reason that I could never understand why people with kids would get white carpet, an elegant couch and a thousand dollar coffee table. Buying things like that when you have kids is just asking for something bad to happen. Sure you can teach your kids not to jump on things or throw things in the house, but accidents can and will happen. So if you have or are planning on having kids, you need to use a little discretion when buying furniture for your home.

One of the first things that you will have to realize is color matters. You will want to avoid white or semi-white colors. Light blues and pale yellows are included in this list. These colors, especially for carpet, are just asking for stains. Anyone who has kids will tell you that spills happen, but so does vomit and bleeding. Any of these could make a nasty mark on your couch or carpeting, and isn't that the last thing that you will want to worry about if your child is throwing up? Stick to browns or some other darker color. If you insist on having some kind of a lighter colored couch, buy a cover. These come in a number of different colors and generally, if you get a decent one, you can't even tell it's on there. This way if there ever is a stain, and there will be, you can simply take the cover off and throw it in the wash. It comes clean easier and allows the couch itself to be whatever color you can get your hands on.

Once you've finalized on a color for the different rooms in your house, you can start on furniture selection. You won't want buy the most expensive items out there for the same reasons you don't want white furniture. Kids aren't easy on furniture, so you may want to avoid any delicate fabrics or woods. Since these tend to be a little more expensive anyway, sticking to the cheaper is better method will work well for you. Talking about woods though, you may will want to watch for the design of the different pieces that you are selecting. When picking out end and coffee tables, avoid anything with sharp corners or edges. Buying something like that is just asking for a cut or gash on your kids head. Find things with rounded corners and when looking at furniture like couches and chairs find something with very few hard surfaces exposed.

Depending on the age of your children you may also want to consider size of each piece too. Sometimes couches and chairs can be pretty high off of the ground making it difficult for kids to get up and easier for them to fall off. Sometimes this is something that you can't avoid, but it is something to keep in mind. If you can't seem to find something that is low enough for your child, consider getting a padded step stool or box that they can use to get on the furniture.

The final thing to know when buying kid friendly furniture is convenience dominates all. If you can find an end table or coffee table that doubles as a toy or movie chest take advantage of that. These generally look great on the outside and are normally padded all the way around, but then have a huge storage space inside. Here you can keep your child's movies or toys when they aren't using them. This way you won't always have to head to their room to get toys or blankets for them, you can just grab them from this hidden toy box.

Whenever you are buying furniture and you have kids you will want to make sure that it is kid-friendly. Safety and convenience reigns supreme and look and style come second.

Today’s Modern Baby Furniture

Let's say you are one of those people who likes the new modern look of things coming out these days. You enjoy the curves and colors of the latest fashion in interior design and have molded your décor around it. Your living room has accent colors and unique furniture and shapely lamps and your kitchen has color mixed in among the appliances which all seem to match each other. All of this is great and your entire house seems to have the edgy curves of the modern age. Then you have a kid. You think that the baby's room will be boring, flat and dull. Sure you plan on using some nice pictures and matching colors, but the furniture will have to be a rectangular crib and changing table and any chairs or tables in the room will be bland. If this is what you are thinking, you will be thrilled to know, you couldn't be more wrong. As advances in the interior design world have changed the way people decorate their homes, they have also taken strides to spruce up the baby's room also.

Starting with the crib, which used to be just a bed with tall railings, you will find unique styles and colors. You are no longer limited to the wooden crib of years past. These new cribs can be oval or round and in almost any color you can think of. You can also take a look at the number of options in cribs that double as beds once your child gets older. These cribs also take on interesting shapes and sizes. Even some of the older, retro styles are starting to make a comeback in the baby world. Cradles are starting to become more popular again and so are bassinets. Pretty much anything that you could think up for a crib, they have available to you know. Just look around online and find what you like.

Another piece that is a must for a baby is the high chair. These are always difficult pieces to buy because you want them to look good in your kitchen, but you would never want to sacrifice safety for style. And now you don't have to. High chairs have come a long way from the tall chairs with the board/tray in front. Now you can find chairs that will push right up the tables and you can find them to match the chairs you already have in your home. If that doesn't appeal to you, you should check out some of the other styles that are out there. You can find some chairs that will share the curves and shapes of your modernized kitchen and living room and probably even the colors. Your child's high chair can become a decorating piece as well as the piece of needed baby furniture it is.

A changing table seems to be simple enough and there doesn't appear to be much you can do about the boring look of it, but designers out there are determined to modernize the entire baby's room. So now you can find changing tables with all kinds of neat features. You will find changing tables that actually double as a play center for your child. These types will sit very low to the ground and will have a section that can be flipped over to lay the child in when changing them, and the flip back over to turn it back into their activity table. Changing tables also can come in collapsible styles for the mother that doesn't have much room, or just doesn't like the look of it sitting in the room all of the time. No matter what your pleasure, you can find the changing table that will fit your needs and wants for a modern baby room.

Accent Furniture for your Living Room

The living room is generally the marquee room in any home. It is where the guests are entertained and where the family spends a majority of their time awake. Many times it is the entry room into the house or at least one of the first rooms you will walk through. With all of these being true it is no wonder that people go to such great lengths to decorate and style their living rooms. The color always has to be perfect and the furniture must be positioned just right and we always try to keep it clean just in case some unexpected guests drop by. If are looking to give your living room a new look, or just liven it up a little bit there are a few pieces of furniture you may want to look into. Each of these pieces will have a different effect on your living room and if you feel it would work for you room or not will be completely up to you.

A coffee table is the first piece we will talk about. A coffee table can not only pull a room together it can also break up any huge pieces of bare carpeting. Sometimes having a little extra space is good, but if you walk into your living room and feel like it is completely empty, try adding a coffee table to the center of the room. With this in place you can add a centerpiece to the table to connect the table with the wall décor or just have a few books or magazines out that your guests can look through. You obviously don't want your table to be too big or too small. A small table will just seem out of place in a big room and large table simply uses up too much space. Generally speaking you don't want a table longer that your couch, particularly when the coffee table will be placed in front of it, which is standard. And you should have ample walking room all the way around it. Add some coasters to the table too, just to protect the surface if some brings drinks into the living room.

The next piece is an end table, or two. These are much smaller tables and are usually placed on either end of the couch or love seat or next to a chair. They allow a place for a lamp, a magazine or a book or even a glass when you have company. These little tables will probably be a little taller than the coffee table and not nearly as large. You won't want them to actually protrude into the living room space, so no longer than your couch or chair wide. Adding a lamp or picture to these tables will give your living room the accent and personal touch you will want.

The final piece of accent furniture for your living room would be a floor lamp. These lamps come in hundreds of different styles, colors and sizes. Generally they will be about six feet or so and have different shades, if they even have shades. You will want to pick a style that matches the feel and look of your room. You will also want to determine how much light you will want for your room before selecting a lamp and where you want the lamp to shine. Some lamps will shine light straight on to the ceiling or the floor, while some shine up the walls or are directional, meaning you can point them wherever you want. Choose wisely, but have fun with it.

These are just a few tips on some accent furniture for your living room. You can modify and change it however you want or need to for your particular room. Just enjoy the space that you have and make it fit your personality.

Save on Furniture

With every New Year you may find yourself wishing you could update the rooms in your home, but you are continually faced with the prospect that you just don't have the money to do so. With a few key ideas in mind, you can make this year the year that you can change the furniture and the feel of your home.

The most important thing to keep in mind if your budget is really the driving force behind your choices, is that this can be a year-long (or longer) process, but that it can be done. You may not want to shop room by room, but rather piece by piece as you come across the best deals. Shopping online is a great way to let you not only compare styles, but also to compare prices to get the best deal. Dig deep because you may find that there are several comparably priced items being sold on a few sites, but one of those sites may offer the added incentive of free shipping. Choosing who to purchase from then becomes a no-brainer.

If you aren't afraid to mix-and-match pieces for a more eclectic feel, then don't be afraid to also shop in the clearance sections of stores. You might find that there are pieces normally sold in sets that are now being sold as single items on clearance, and these pieces can become integral accent pieces in your home. You might also fall in love with a certain piece of furniture that is being sold at a great price, but it doesn't exactly fit the style of the rest of your room. Think creatively in those situations. Would the room actually benefit from a mixture of pieces rather than the same style throughout? Or can you take those unmatched pieces and add a few key items such as a coat of paint or a slipcover to bring more cohesion to the space?

Another way to save on your home furnishings is to mix old and new. Take stock of what you currently have, and determine what is worth keeping. Try to think from the standpoint of durability and not sentimentality. As previously mentioned, those pieces you do keep may only need a few updates to give them a more modernized feel. Then you can shop carefully for a few key pieces that will give your room a entirely new feel. You'll find that you it's easy to have the updated room you've been waiting for when you realize that you can have it without having to wait until you win the lottery!

For the truly die-hard sports fan, there is only one way to show your true colors in your home: with a custom-tailored sports room. The perfect place to enjoy the game, reminisce about plays gone by, or gather for a drink, a sports-themed room doesn’t have to be a weird assortment of leftover pieces of furniture. Today’s sports rooms are a stylish and coordinated effort to display with pride all that your favorite team means to you. Choose your colors wisely. Let your sports room reflect your team’s colors by choosing items based on the team’s official shades. Everything from wall color to pillows to throw rugs can show your spirit. So maybe your favorite team is the Miami Dolphins. Rather than paint your walls that bold shade of turquoise or orange, choose accent pieces that reflect your team’s colors. A carefully placed purple lampshade can be much more appealing than an entire wall of that color. Whatever team you love, show off your pride by keeping with their color scheme.

Shop for team logo furniture. For the ultimate sports fan, there are many wonderful furniture options on the market. You can find everything including couches, recliners, ottomans and bed frames, all adorned with your team’s colors and logo. For any sport and for any team, there are many stylish and comfortable pieces just waiting to make your sports room complete. You can even get your sports team furniture customized to display your favorite player’s name and number. Show your loyalty and add some style to your sports room with amazing team logo furniture.

Make it comfortable. The bottom line for your sports room is that it should be a place where you and your friends and family can come to relax and appreciate the atmosphere. Make the room an inviting and livable place by have plenty of seating, maybe a TV for the game or even a bar area for enjoying a drink. Whatever you plan to use your sports room for, you will want it to be a welcoming place for guests and company. Good lighting and a comfortable place to relax can add to this feeling. The more comfortable the room, the more use you will likely get out of it.

Show off your own sports achievements. Having a sports-themed room is not only a great way to display pride for your favorite team, it is also a great way to display pride in your own sports accomplishments. Get out that bowling trophy or the medals you won for golf. Create an area in your sports room for your own personal accomplishments or those of your children. It can be a great way to display your items and a wonderful conversation starter. Buying a glass curio cabinet for displaying your vintage baseball cards, trophies and other valuable sports memorabilia is a wise investment for any sports room.

Have fun. The bottom line when creating a sports-themed room is to have fun with it. Add your own personal flair and make it a place where you want to be. No matter what your team or what sport you love, a customized sports-themed room is a great way to bring together your friends, family and loved ones over the games and sports you all enjoy.
