Crosby is a 4 month old Poodle mix who is initially scared of people but warms up quickly. For his young age, he is very calm and does well with other dogs, picking up on dog signals extremely well. Once comfortable with other dogs, he tries to initiate play. Crosby loves to be held and will smother you with lots of kisses. On leash, the outside world is still very new where he stops in his tracks to unfamiliar sounds and people. He has just started crate training, seems housebroken, and is just an adorable dog. Laramie, now called Ozzy, was adopted from us in 2006 as a cute puppy. But now, due to change in lifestyle and business travel, Ozzy needs a new home. It will be very hard on him and very sad. Ozzy has extensive training and knows, sit, lay down, paw (shake), don’t touch, leave it, stay, up (jump), load up (get in the car), wait, shake (shake water off) and go to your bed. Ozzy is crate trained and loves being in his crate, it is his favorite bed. Ozzy will bark at a new person approaching to alert and within a matter a minutes will warm up to the new person. Current guardian says he is good with kids, but we need to evaluate. Ozzy can be fearful of new dogs. He has been able to play with other dogs, after he spends time with time and feels safe. Ozzy is loyal and will alert you to strangers at home. He will keep you safe and love you and your family. He loves his twice 30 min. daily walks, hikes and home routine. No dog parks. He is happy to lounge at home and well behaved. He is a great traveler and likes car ride. Ozzy needs a experience dog home that will truly commit to him for life.

Buddy is a big, beautiful, fluffy, and chocolate-colored Norwegian Forest-type cat. He's about 4-years-old, and he weighs about 17 pounds--so he gives you a lot to love. Although he's not too fond of sharing attention with any other feline friend, he does love hanging out with people so that they can brush his long chocolate fur and fuss all over him. He also has a strong penchant for climbing into bed with his foster parents. Since his love for people far transcends his appreciation of other cats, Buddy does need to be adopted into a home in which he'll be the only kitty. Buddy is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and flea-treated. He's also had extended dental cleaning and maintenance, so his health is complete from head to toe. Teddy is super adorable and cute! Loves to be held, attentive and playing with other dogs. Because he is deaf, he cannot hear his own bark, so he will bark for attention but will relax with a chew treat or kong. He is very affectionate, social and a tiny teddy bear! Kids 12 yrs+. Tiny Melissa was rescue from a Alameda County Shelter as a under-age puppy and very skinny. Seem very sweet but was very sick and we rushed her to our vet office. Turns out, she has parvo and being treated by IV and antibiotic/Tamiflu. She will need to stay at the vet hospital for the week to beat parvo. We are hoping she will have the immune strength to over-come parvo. 5/6/13: Melissa is doing well and now eating. She will be able to go to her foster home in a day or so. Best if she can be fostered in a home with no other dogs for 21 days. With early treatment, she is beating parvo and on her way to being a happy healthy pup.

Alfie and Amy were rescued on 4/15/13 from a crowded Alameda Shelter. Both have kennel cough and now on medication. Alfie is very sweet and friendly. Once he feels comfortable with person, he loves to snuggle into you and look to you for comfort. He is charming, gentle and so adorable. He is a little timid of new surroundings but adjusts once he feels safe. He does follow his sibling, Amy and looks to her for comfort. Good with other dogs and seems very passive. We are not sure of their breed mix. Update: He is doing well at his foster home with another dog. Kids 10 yrs+ since fast movement & kids scare him. Alfie would love a home with another dog at home, a fenced-in yard, and adult home (older teens ok). He loves his daily walks (45 min. - 1 hour/exercise) and feels happier when walking with another dog.

Amy and Alfie were rescued on 4/15/13 from a crowded Alameda Shelter. Both have kennel cough and now on medication. Am is a little timid but sweet and friendly. She takes a little longer to warm up but once she is comfortable with person, she will give you kisses. Amy seems passive and very gentle. Her brother, Alfie, tends to go to her for comfort. Good with other dogs she adjusts to. We are not sure of their breed mix. At her current foster home, she can be dominate with two other dogs (one passive, one dominate) but learning to play. A little mouthy. Needs experienced dog guardian. Adult only since she can also be nervous of fast movement, noise and strange places. Needs time to learn and feel comfortable. Needs daily exercise (45 - 1 hour walks). She has puppy energy like a 1 year old at her current foster home.

Dusty is a 48 lbs Border Terrier mix who is a year old and still quite puppy like. He warms up quickly to new people and is friendly, affectionate, and playful. Dusty seems smart, quick to learn, treat motivated, and shows a lot of respect for direction. He is a little unsure of himself with other dogs, initially a little fearful, but he gets comfortable quite fast and will initiate play. He has just started crate training, seems housebroken, and is very good on leash.

Arlene was rescued on April 9, 2013. The poor girl had been badly neglected--she was matted, dirty, and covered with fleas! The shelter bathed and shaved her, and started here on medication for flea dermatitis/skin infections (the photos show the effect of the fleas on her skin, & she is slowly healing). Despite the past mistreatment, Arlene is a very sweet, friendly, and gentle girl. She was great with her cage buddy at the shelter. She is very good with other dogs. Now in a foster home, she'll get her vet needs taken care of, along with lots of TLC and healthy food.

Riley was abandoned to a shelter and he was about to be put down when we met him. When we tested him, he loved playing ball and allows anyone to take ball out of his mouth. Did well meeting another dog. He is beautiful, athletic, active, talkative and needs exercise. Great jogging buddy! He does have some sep. anxiety and wants to be with person and needs lots of daily exercise. Needs basic training to learn not to jump up on people and learn some home manners. Needs experienced dog foster home who can help train him and really exercise him. Update from Foster Home: Riley is an almost 2-year old White Shepherd/Siberian Husky mix. He's a tall, lanky gorgeous boy! Riley adores people and is friendly to everyone he meets, but is especially easy to bond with his "people". He loves kids and makes a good playmate for them, playing fetch or tug or just running around...he is still very puppy-like. He is very treat-motivated, with a soft mouth, and is progressing but still needs a lot of hands-on, patient training. He has a lot of energy to spare and would make a great running partner, but also likes to curl up and sleep wherever his people are. He is housebroken and progressing quickly in his crate-training. He is polite but not overly interested in other dogs, and is somewhat possessive of his toys. He would do fine with another dog of any size for company but he would also be ok on his own.

She was initially timid but warmed up quickly, sitting on a volunteer's lap and giving kisses. She is great with other dogs, very gentle and passive. She loves playing with other dogs. At her foster home, she is now very happy and loves playing with another dog. She's doing great! As you can see in the photos, Zooey has an injured eye which needed to be removed. Zooey had her eye enucleation surgery and doing great.

Calvin was rescued on 3/7/13 from an Alameda County shelter. He is a little timid, but still friendly and sweet. Great with other pups and little cutie. Kids 10 yrs+. Update from Foster Home: Calvin is doing great. He loves being outside in the sunshine. You should see him play fetch now. Calvin is also learning to come when called. He is an eager learner... searching, checking and curious about everything new he sees. Typical of puppies, he has his burst of evening energy and dashes through the house, then chooses a toy, plops down on a dog bed and plays. Usually on his back with the toy in his front paws above his head. When he decides it is time for bed, he climbs into my arms and then falls asleep. I then put him in his little bed and he sleeps through the night. A calm, happy, home with another sweet dog would be ideal for Calvin. Children over 10 yrs old please.

Ryan was saved on hour before PTS on 3/8/13 from an Alameda County shelter. He was one of 16 dogs that were abandoned in a field that the shelter had to take in and over-loaded their shelter cages. He was timid and nervous at the shelter. He has never been walked on a leash and was fearful. During our initial time with him, he was wary (due to being undersocialized), but passive. Once out with us, he sat next to us and allowed to be petted. He is great with other dogs and snuggled with one of the other abandoned dogs. Update: Complete turn around! In a few days, he is now very friendly and social. He is walking on leash, loves treats and affectionate. He gives us kisses and very happy! Ryan is a great little doggie and eager to learn. He was curious of vet office cat but backed away. Ryan is adorable! Needs basic training & adult quiet home with another dog with yard. He is friendly with people he knows, but can be fearful & skittish of loud noise & certain people (will try to run & hide).

Ranger was rescued on 3/4/13 from an Alameda County shelter. He was badly neglected and had been starved in a backyard for years. He was emaciated (only 60 lb), had huge infected sores all over his body, mats, and major ear infections. After one month of good food at the shelter, he is now 89 lb but still very thin. Ranger is from a West German Shepherd line (smart/working line). He loves all people and is friendly. He allowed the shelter staff to handle and bathe him, and was cooperative when medication was applied to his painful ear infections. Quiet in crate during transport. He knew no commands when he came to the shelter, but has already learned sit & down. Ranger responds well to training and looks to person for direction. He really wants to bond and learn. Ranger gets a little excited when meeting new dogs. He sniffs and doesn't know what to do (since he was isolated in yard) but the shelter sees improvement. He seems to want to play but is awkward. He did fine with a female large gentle dog. Ranger needs an experienced GSD guardian who can handle a large strong dog. Adult and only dog home for now (for training). With training, vet care and healthy food, he will become a gorgeous, smart, and courageous German Shepherd, not to mention your best friend.

Selma is a golden girl who needs some senior dog TLC, healthy food, salmon oil and joint supplements. She seems to be little hard of hearing but is very attentive with her eyes and loves people. Well behaved and so charming.

Lady is a 3 year old Pointer-Dalmation mix who was rescued from a South Bay shelter on 2/17/13. This poor Lady has been a "frequent flier" at the Shelter through no fault of her own; twice she had to be confiscated from two different bad owners and then she came back again when an adoption fell through. Lady is a sweet, shy girl who bonds very quickly and really loves people. She's great with other dogs and older children but does not like cats. She is housebroken, great on leash, good in the car, very friendly with everyone she meets, but also mellow and a snuggler. After having to change homes so many times in her young life, Lady now suffers from separation anxiety. She is working on this in her foster home so that her worry over being left will lessen. Ideally, Lady would do best with someone home full-time who is willing to continue working on this insecurity.

Vinny is a 7 year old Boxer-mix. He's actually been DNA tested and he is mostly boxer with a little bit of Am Staff and Mini Pin. Vinny ended up boarding at a vet when after his owner lost her home. Vinny has now been living at the vet's office for over a year and its time he found a new home. He is a big loveable boy who is a bit under-socialized with other dogs. He wants to play with them by jumping on their heads. He's not aggressive, but just needs to learn some doggie manners. He's treat motivated and does fine on a leash with a martingale collar. He'd probably be best as an only dog, or with another dog that understood his play style (maybe a female boxer). He's probably too enthusiastic for cats.

Coqueta is a spoiled and spunky diva that would do better as the only dog in the house since she prefers to have the attention to herself. When on the leash she pulls a bit so she will need some training with that. With her barking it can get annoying but if you are an experienced dog owner you'll know how to keep her quiet. Also if she sees another dog she'll immediately want to go say hi. When giving her affection she'll just return it equally, since she is a ball of love that will need lots of cuddling. An irresistible dog. She is energetic and would love being able to go out and play everyday outside in the park, so daily exercise is a must. Needs plenty of chew toys, and with balls she will retrieve them. With dogs she is cautious but is friendly with them in the end. Her long coat will need grooming and a proper brushing daily, but does not shed too much. Cats are a no, she will try chasing them. Needs an experienced person to train her. Philip was rescued from a Santa Clara county shelter on 2/1/13. He was shy at the shelter but with us, he as very sweet disposition, coming up to his handlers at the shelter to sit in their lap. Philip did great with other dogs in dog-to-dog test. Children 12+. Philip is a dog that brings laughter to the foster home with his clown-like personality. Not only is he adorable, he is extremely intelligent, learning commands very quickly. Because he’s so smart, he also figures out how to get his way and needs strong leadership. Philip tends to bond very quickly to his person and truly enjoys the one-on-one time, relaxing and cuddling. At the same time, he loves to play with dogs, toys, and go on walks or hikes. Philip will do well on his own or with another dog.

Major was rescued on 1/25/13 from a crowded shelter in Alameda when his time was up. At the shelter, he was friendly and seem very sweet. Was nervous at first but in a few days more confident. Update: Now that Major is more comforable, he's strong terrier personality is showing. He loves attention and friendly with people he knows. Smart and agile. Active and loves to run. At first he was good with other dogs at a Doggie Day Care, but as he got more comforable, he is now dominate and alpha to other dogs. He is reactive to new dogs at showcase. He will need a home as the only dog and a very experience guardian who can exercise him. No kids since sometimes he is fearful and will guard his person. Need kind leader to train & guide him. He has been boarding and fine with our volunteer and vet staff.

Cagney and her sister Lacey (see separate profile) were rescued on 1/15/13 from an Alameda County shelter where they were about to be put down. Cagney is the big sister and more outgoing than Lacey. She was scared at the shelter, but once out of her cage she was friendly with us. No cats. Cagney was neglected, severely matted and dirty. Under-socialized. She looks very cute now that she is healthier and groomed. Need very experience adult female home. She is fearful of men. Foster home update - after 2 weeks: She is an amazing indoor dog. She is happy to relax at the foot of the sofa and watch what goes on outside for most of the day. She loves her walks (45 min). She needs to be on the lead when new men come over because she will try to guard me and will try to nip men (maybe was mis-treated by a man). But after 10 minutes or so she starts to wag her tail and seek attention from the new people, but with caution. She is great with women but very leary of men. She is dominate to small dogs, especially Chihuahuas and mini poodles. Seems relaxed to meet larger dogs, but will try to dominate. When left alone she will bark for a few minutes but then relaxes. She is crate trained but doesn't have to stay in it for too long. She is best with women and quiet experienced home (less visitors). No kids. Need continue training & kind leader.

She was very scared at the shelter, but once out of her cage she showed just how friendly and sweet she is--an affectionate, happy girl who is good with other dogs. Lacey was neglected, severely matted and dirty. Her photos show how beautiful she looks after being groomed. Adult home only. She was under-socialized (left alone in yard) so she is fearful of strangers or people looking at her and will guard person she bonds to or out of fear. Need very experienced dog guardian with training skills/kind leadership to work with her fear issues. From Lacey's foster mom: Lacey has blossomed into a wonderful easy indoor dog. She is wonderful with my four indoor only cats and she stays in the house with my Chihuahua while I am work and has not made a mistake in her housetraining in 3 weeks. At my house she only needs to "hold it" for four hours as I work close to home and she is perfect in her ability to wait for me to get home and let her out. She shows no separation anxiety and doesn't mind when I leave her behind. Lacey no longer needs a dog to follow so that she can feel comfortable and safe. She will do fine as an only dog but loves dogs so can also do well in a multi dog household. She is not a "yapper" and only seems to bark at the noise the postman makes while delivering the mail. She sleeps in her crate at night and is a silent sleeper. She is a really wonderful girl and is going to make someone a wonderful companion.

Holly (watch my NEW video!) was a stray and followed a person and her two small dogs home. FFR rescued her from a crowded shelter when her time was up. Holly is super dog friendly, playful and a love. She is a great doggie! She needs a moderate active guardian who can exercise and train her. Holly would love to be your best friend and hiking buddy! Foster Home UpdateHolly is an all-around fun-loving dog! She is a fast learner, already knows how to greet people calmly, sit, stay, and walk nicely on leash. She has lots of energy and would do great with an active family that loves to hike, run, and go on long walks. At the same time, Holly would be a great companion for another dog. She loves to play and interacts well with all dogs and personalities. Most importantly, Holly is just a love. Super affectionate, giving kisses and if she could, hugs. February 2013 UpateHolly continues to have a fun-loving and sweet dispostion, however we recently learned that in a new home without another dog, she was nervous of new change. Kara was rescued on 11/10/12 from a crowded shelter hour before her time was up. She is super people friendly and seems smart. When we first met Kara, she was a very strong, fast moving and untrained dog, who seem to learn quickly with treats. She is very treat motivated, attentive, listens and loves playing ball (but not high drive). From her foster home: Kara is a very playful, affectionate, & smart dog. If you put her in the bedroom with the crate open she will sleep in it on her own. She loves her daily hour walks. She gets very high marks on her leash training. She has had the chance to meet a dozen or so dogs on her walks. She is curious and friendly with most dogs, but not as fond of small dogs. Kara likes to dig and got lucky when she came home with us because 1/3 our back yard is a kid's sandbox and she can dig all she wants. She is great for an active family. Kara is beautiful!

Nora does well on leash, sits before entering/exiting the house and car, before being fed, and sits before being invited to join me on the couch. She responds well to hand-signals. Nora is very affectionate and when I scratch her, she will close her eyes and just enjoy that moment, ... while in that state she completely trusts me and will let me do anything to her. Nora is housebroken, crate-trained and does great in the car. Nora would do best in an active home or with another 4-legged playmate. She would also enjoy snuggling with you. Nora will be a welcome addition to any family. Responsible children 8 yrs. and older.

Pirate (watch my video!) was rescued on 10/25/12 from a crowded shelter. He is very sweet and friendly. Great with other dogs and passive. He was neglected and very matted. Now groomed and feeling great. He has mild dry eye on his left eye that require daily eye ointment. Everyone adores him. He is wonderful and adorable little guy. He would love to be your buddy. A little camera shy. In person, he is very social and friendly. Needs basic training. Kids 10 yrs+. Pirate is a sweet-heart. From his foster home: Pirate is the sweetest little guy and just wants to be your shadow. He does need a lot of exercise and even with his short little legs, he loves to walk a few times a day. He does wonderfully at the dog park and also is best buds with my other dog, Lola, a female around the same age -- they love to chase each other around and play tug of war. He has a tendency to try to run off if he sees something interesting and is not great about coming to his name but is getting better. He would do best in a home with another dog or an older child to play with as he is just a little firecracker you will fall in love at first sight with this little Ewok!!

Once comfortable, little Skylar is friendly girl. She seems quiet and mellow so far. Loves to be held. She is very thin, and needs healthy food with TLC. Good with other dogs. Update from foster home 12/10/12: Skylar is an absolute sweetheart who will melt your heart when she looks at you with her adoring please love me look. Although she loves playing with my other dogs and would like a playmate she would be a great companion for someone who wants a loyal companion. She follows me everywhere and wants to be held and cuddled. She is very quiet; housebroken; crate trained and loves her walks. Because she is afraid of loud noises and quick movements she will need a quiet adult only home.

Billy is a super-duper friendly and affectionate guy. Unfortunately, he's a good example of how a wonderfully sweet little adopted kitten ends up getting dumped at a shelter as an adult. Although Billy loves people, he's much less enthusiastic towards very young children and other cats. He seems to stress out from the high-pitched sounds that they can make. Therefore, our rescue is looking for a permanent home without babies or toddlers in which he would be the only kitty. It wasn't Billy's fault that he ended up in a shelter only days away from being put down. If not for our rescue's microchip, we'd never have known. Please consider giving Billy the home that he's always deserved. Adoption is for life. And if not, the animals need to be returned safely. Billy's foster mom thinks the absolute world of him. And he's waiting to have the same effect on you.

Stella was rescued on 11/7/11 from a crowded shelter (Alameda) where she was out of time. She is a middle age sr. sweetie. Good with other dogs. No cats (she will bark & try to chase). She was badly matted & dirty at the shelter. Update from foster home: She's a silly, playful fun dog who loves to go for walks, and is great with other dogs. She tries to be the alpha, so needs leadership. She may guard person or home if allowed to. She also loves laps and gives lots of kisses. Kids 12+. Her activity level is moderate. Loves to play with toys, but not hyper in anyway. She does try to climb up on anything she can get to- desks, tables, etc. and she can jump very well. Hard to believe she is 10 yrs young. We will get a 2nd vet to age her. She looks about 8 yrs to us. She is very curious and spunky at home. Look how cute she is after her grooming. In dog years, she is a healthy 56 years old in human years.

Vellie, the velcro girl and extreme athlete, came to stay with me a few months ago. She won my heart immediately with her vivacious and affectionate personality. Her early history is unknown, other than she was rescued early 2011 and lived in a cage most of that time. The vet estimated her age to be between 2-3 years old. She's very social, very demanding of attention and she loves EVERYONE. She would make a great companion for someone with older children or anyone who is willing to give her lots of attention. She is very active which is why I describe her as an extreme athlete. She literally bounces off walls and furniture so she needs to be in a home that will allow for her high octane raceway behavior. She gets along with other cats, but has become territorial around me...she doesn't like to share so a home with one other cat would be good as long as she gets plenty of attention. She's a sweet bug who snuggles with me when I watch TV and she loves to sleep on the bed. She has been provided medical care, spay, basic shots, de-wormed and flea treatment. 7 month old Lady Gaga is one lovely, little girl who enjoys the kitty life. From lounging around to playing with her toys, she is easy-going, very social and likes to be close to her people. Lady Gaga and her siblings including their mom, cousins, and auntie were dumped in a field at 3 weeks, left to fend for themselves. Thankfully, they were found by a caring resident and all rescued. Because these kittens have had the benefit of being cared for by their moms and humans, they are really one of a kind. Here is what current adopters have said about these kittens: “I wanted to let you know that the cats are all amazing! Prince and I bonded instantly. It was difficult picking a companion for him since they were all so sweet even the shiest Jewel, who was a close second, but Mommy Zoe won out.” Friends came over to meet the cats The cats were great ...everybody loved them. Somebody asked me how they never got adopted sooner....I did not know the answer “I looked at some other cats at another rescue for a reference and none of them even came close to any of these.” They are better every day. Them with me and I with them. They are unbelievable.

Jerry was adopted as a kitten in 2006, but now returning to us due to move. He did live indoor in a home with another cat and prefer spending time with the other cat. Jerry is an handsome gentleman. Very friendly and sweet. Maybe he will be a little bit shy at the very beginning but when he gets to know you, he will like to stay with you. He doesn't like to be held or grabbed, but he loves that you rub his belly with purr. He is also curious and loves playing with any toy you give him. Frankie came into FFR on 6/8/11 for our help to find her a new adoption home. Frankie is a very special dog. She comes from an abusive past and has flourished despite her past treatment. She is very curious yet cautious of new experiences. She does have high prey drive to other dogs and needs to be on leash at all times for control outside of her home. She has learned to play with toys and sleep in her crate. She is very smart and tries to avoid when she knows it’s time to do something she doesn’t want to do, so we are working on her obedience manners. Frankie hasn’t had a lot of attention in her short life, so she is very reluctant to let you stop petting her. With supervision, she ignored the foster home's cat & fine with same size male dog. Mooch (DOB 3/21/11) is back. He was adopted as a young kitten in 2011, only to be returned because his family's older cat never liked having a little brother. So Mooch is looking for someone to love him. He's a big talker whenever you enter the room. And he enjoys rubbing up against you for comfort and security. As you can see from his picture, he indulges in middle-of-the-day naps on the floor--as if he had no care in the world. As unfortunate it is that Mooch hasn't yet found his permanent home, he's such a mellow and sweet guy that all it takes is someone to give him his chance. It was a chance that he didn't have living with an older intolerant kitty. But that never changed his sweet, deserving nature. And he likes and appreciates any human willing to give him attention. He's a big, soft dude with an equally big, soft heart.

Pickles (formerly Lea) was rescued on 5/1/11 from a Milpitas shelter. She was adopted but returned to Furry Friends on 12/1/12 because the adopter (in apt. with another dog) could devote sufficient time to her house-training. She would not always do her business outside on walks (nervous) and have accidents inside home. Pickles is initially shy, but slowly warms up and will approach people for treats and petting. At home, she likes to follow her person or other dogs around. She is very passive, timid and would do best in a quiet home with adults (though she does fine with gentle older kids) and another dog. With any home change, she needs time to adjust. At her current foster home, her house-training seems complete (access to yard from home), and she's getting along well with everyone (two adults, dogs and a cat). She needs another dog to live with and access to enclosed yard from home.

By Rob Dennis Fremont Argus Posted: 10/08/2010 11:00:00 PM PDT Updated: 10/11/2010 09:59:35 AM PDT FREMONT -- Rocket was a day from being euthanized when Dave Dorn found him nearly six years ago in a Bay Area shelter. Today, the 9-year-old yellow Labrador is enjoying his retirement after a career as the top narcotics detection dog in the western U.S. The hyperactivity that makes dogs like Rocket so difficult to handle as household pets often makes them perfect for law enforcement work as drug- and bomb-sniffing dogs, Dorn said. "Most of the time, these dogs don't make good pets for homes," Dorn said. "They just always keep going, keep going, keep going. ... He was a rocket, man. That's how he gets the name. He (nearly) escaped from me three times." Rocket demonstrated that get-up-and-go along with his drug-sniffing prowess Saturday during Furry Friends Rescue's Tail Waggin' Walk and Picnic, dubbed "Woofstock." The event, held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Fremont's Central Park, raised money for Furry Friends and the Tri-City and Hayward animal shelters. Furry Friends, an all-volunteer nonprofit companion animal rescue organization based in Fremont, has saved more than 12,000 animals since 1998. The day kicked off with a 3K walk and included music, a vegetarian lunch, raffles and a silent auction. Dog show contests included Best Talent, Coolest Hippie, Prettiest Flower Child, Best Speak, Unique Mix and (of course) Howl-loween Costume. Rocket and another of Dorn's dogs, an 8-year-old black Lab named Storm who specializes in bomb detection, strutted their stuff at noon, walking down a line of plastic tubs and orange cones and then pouncing on the one with the suspicious odor. Rocket, in character, pawed frantically at the tub, flipping it over and popping the top off. Storm proceeded in a more sedate fashion. "She's a little slower because she does explosives, and we don't want her knocking over the bomb," Dorn said. Dorn, a sergeant with the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, has been around dogs his entire life. He has been a police officer since 1994 and has been supervising and training the department's Canine Unit for 12 years. Through their company K-9 STAC, or Specialized Training and Consulting, he and his wife Kerry have found, trained and placed about 30 dogs into law enforcement agencies throughout California. If a dog has the right stuff, it takes about five weeks to train it to detect odors and conduct searches, and another four weeks to get it working with its police handler. "I'll take a three-legged dog, I'll take a beagle, I'll take 10 Chihuahuas," Dorn said. "If you have the right drives to make it, you're in with me." He is an affectionate boy who loves to cuddle and gives kisses with us at showcase or one person he bonds with at home. Marley loves to be out and about, a good traveler who does well meeting people and other dogs on leash if guardian has leadership. Need very experienced dog guardian with kind leadership and gone short hours. He seems to do best with female guardian. He always looks so sweet at our showcases, but from trying 3 homes, he will guard at home. He must be put away behind baby gate or kept on leash with any visitor.

Ivan was rescued on 3/14/10 from a crowded shelter (Alameda). He was neglected, scared and in horrible condition. He was suffering from demodex mange. After months of vet care and TLC from his foster home, he recovered and beat most of the mange. He is friendly, sweet and good with other dogs. He is a litte timid of new situations and people. When he looks for comfort, he likes sitting on our shoes, snuggling and enjoys being held. He is good on leash and well behaved. He needs to stay on holistic healthy foods to maintain his health. Kellie (Elkhound / Chow Chow mix) was rescued on 1/5/10 from a shelter (Watch my video!) (Alameda). She is friendly and a true sweet-heart. Wise and spunky. She was great with other dogs at the shelter and dog boarding facility, but once she settled in, she will bark at other dogs on walks. Need guardian to correct her for leash reactiveness to other dogs. She doesn't like bouncy active dogs jumping into her face. She is a mellow sr. dog who is gentle and wants to bond to her person for life. Great at her foster home with everyone. Her two teenage foster boys adore her. She's people affectionate, easy on the leash, loves treats, follows you around and cooperative. Rides in the car well. Easy to walk. Speaks for treats! Very cuddly. Good girl and good with kids at her foster home. Sweet-heart! But no cats please. Best as the only dog at home. Kellie needs sponsorship to cover her surgery of her fatty tumor removal (chest & left knee area) Sugery will cost over $1500 due to the complexity of the surgery. UPDATE: Her 1 lb fatty tumor was removed from her chest, and already healed. She is doing great. A youngster again.

Marcus is a very friendly and charming guy. However, as is the case with many handsome cats, he doles out affection on his own terms. Although he doesn't appreciate being picked up and held, he does enjoy hanging out with people and getting attention. Anyone interested in adopting him will probably have to be patient as he develops his own brand of affection. Marcus was found as a very small kitten living in a feral colony. Before it was too late, he was socialized to live as a loving companion cat. Affection just needs to be his idea and on his schedule. But it will be worth the wait.

Ashley was found on the streets looking for a friend, and spent a week at an Alameda shelter before FFR rescued her. It was apparent that she was injured and a vet diagnosed her with torn ligaments in both knees. She's now fully recovered from surgery and romps around on the trail with her doggie buddies regularly.Ashley is a very friendly and loving dog with a wonderful temperament. She loves to cuddle and is great with other dogs. She is very affectionate and sweet and a joy to be around. She is playful, likes to play with chew toys and chase an occasional ball. She is kennel trained so she very comfortable resting, sleeping and spending time in there. She loves to be with her human companions. She would do best in a home without young children. She does not try to pull towards or chase cats when she sees them. So she might be okay with cats but the foster home doesn't have any.

Phoebe (watch my video!) was rescued on 11/12/09 from Tri-City Animal Shelter (Alameda). She is friendly to women, but was nervous and fearful of men and kids. At her foster home, she learned she was safe and now friendly with men she meets/know. In a home with other dogs, she will try to be the top dog in the household. She needs a leader to set the rule. She will stand and beg for treats. Adorable! Loves sitting on your lap. She is leary of fast movement from strangers and may nip. She is ok around dogs, but will try to be the top dog in home. No cats. August, 2010: Phoebe is responding well to training to correct her Alpha behavior. She no longer fears males and is friendly and anxious to meet new people. She does not resist or object to handling or having her paws checked by someone she knows. Groomers can handle her. She has done well in her socializing sessions with other dogs. She is responsive to conversation. She will do her best in a quiet home with an adult that is experienced with dog training and kind leadership. No kids.

Walkers enjoyed a fun warm-up to music and relaxing 3K walk around beautiful Lake Elizabeth. Afterward, they got lot's of goodies/treats from 20 booths, watched Search & Rescue and Frisbee Demo's, won awesome Raffles and Silent Auction items, ate Pizza, Pumpkin Pie and lot's of goodies, got their dog's photo Portraits, and participated or watched the Howl-loween & Dog Show Contests. AB 241, Assemblymember Pedro Nava's the Responsible Breeder Act, co-sponsored by SCIL, is currently sitting on Governor Schwarzenegger's desk, awaiting his signature. This is a hopeful time in California for those of us concerned with mistreatment of pets, and it is your phone calls and letters that helped AB 241 come this far: If the Governor signs AB 241, it will become law on Jan 1, 2010, and the number of large puppy / pet mills in California will be dramatically reduced. If he vetoes it, we must start the entire process again next year, and the suffering of these innocent animals is prolonged. We urge you to call the Governor and let him know how important this bill is to you. Here is the letter from President, Social Compassion in Legislation (SCIL). Dear Supporters: Success! AB 241, Assemblymember Pedro Nava's anti puppy mill legislation, won its vote in the Senate Public Safety Committee this morning! Senators Mark Leno, Gil Cedillo, Loni Hancock and Darrell Steinberg all voted YES. The Senators listened to the hundreds of animal lovers who called and faxed in support of this good bill. And congratulations Assemblymember Nava! Thank you for representing the vast majority of Californians who see pets as friends, not products. AB 241 will next be heard in August in the Senate Appropriations Committee. We will alert you when the time comes. Now, a more personal note. This has been a crazy week in Sacramento. AB 241 has passed Committee, while Senator Florez decided to wait until August to move SB 250 forward. Thanks so much to everyone who has called, faxed and traveled to help our pets live better lives. Once AB 241 becomes law, no one in California will be able to keep more than 50 unaltered dogs. While that may seem like a lot, in reality many puppy mills keep 500 or more unaltered dogs at one time. All too often the puppy mill breeder dogs spend their life in tiny cages, and sometimes never touch the ground for their entire life. The awful treatment of dogs in puppy mills is a direct result of the profit mentality of underground animal breeders, whether they have 5 breeder dogs or 500. They believe it is their right to breed and sell animals without any government oversight. And ironically, backyard breeders (and the groups representing them) complained all through 2007 and 2008 that legislation targeting underground breeding was misplaced and should focus only on puppy mills... but now it's those same people loudly complaining about AB 241! They now oppose ANY legislation designed to help pets, a knee-jerk reaction based on a collective paranoia that sees a conspiracy to take away breeding rights and pets behind every piece of pet legislation. If this all sounds like hyperbole just for effect, I wish it was. The number of people living off the income of their underground, backyard breeding in California is truly staggering. Before we started doing research into this a few years ago, the scope of this problem, and the millions of tax dollars stolen from our state by these people, just wasn't understood. But now, thankfully, our Legislators are starting to notice. In fact, the California Board of Equalization is now also starting to take an interest in underground breeding. The BOE is beginning to contact breeders to determine their status and see if they are paying their taxes. That's GOOD NEWS! And the breeder response? Are they stepping up, being honest citizens by finally following current breeding laws and paying taxes? Nope. They are instead frantically pulling all references to individual breeders down from breeder websites and AKC lists, in an attempt to go further underground. Shameless. The honest truth is that backyard breeders, and the hypocritical organized groups making money from their donations while pretending to care about pets, see animals as a tax-free paycheck. It's income that is easily hidden from the Government, even though current law states that anyone selling animals needs to pay sales tax and claim the income. This week Sacramento was overrun with hundreds of backyard breeders, gathering to oppose SB 250 and AB 241. It was quite a sight. Unlike you, they have plenty of time to travel to the Capital, because their day job is sitting in their house tending to puppies while waiting for the females to come into heat again. Those puppies sell for hundreds (or thousands) of dollars each, tax-free. This is a career, their tax-free livelihood, period, and they will never support truly pet-friendly legislation, because they fear that it will cost them money. It's just that simple, and it was in full display this week in Sacramento. Thank you for keeping up the fight to help pets. They need our voice! Thank you for being honest taxpayers. What is SB 250? -This copy taken from SCIL (Social Compassion in Legistration) SB 250 will be heard in the Assembly Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, July 15th, in room 4202 at 9:00 am in Sacramento. This is the final hearing - please come to the hearing if you can! We need your help getting through this final committee. Please call the committee members from now until next Tuesday night. Dog & cat breeders and other animal industry lobbyists (CA Cattlemen's Association, CA Farm Bureau Federation, etc.) are out in force trying to kill both SB 250 and AB 241. Don't let them do it!! Kali is a beautiful medium dilute torti who has the tortitude to match. She can be a sweet girl who loves to lick your toes, especially while your trying to sleep. Tad was rescued from the Hayward Shelter on 3/3/09. He was adopted in June, 2009, but was returned because his adoptive home could not give him the attention he deserved. On 11/1/12, he had to have most of his tail amputated due to an accident with a car door, but he is recovered now. Tad is smart, friendly, curious, loyal, and he lives up to the Miniature Pinscher’s reputation as the “king of toys”. He is nervous of change but settles to a routine. He would be happy lying next to you on the couch or proudly prancing in front of you on a walk. Like all dogs, he needs daily exercise but is not a high energy dog. He loves treats, is eager to learn new tricks and is quite the jumper. Tad was transferred to a new foster home in April, 2013, where he is being called Dobie. The new foster home reports that Dobie adapts to new situations with ease. He is polite, playful, comfortable in a crate, goes potty outside, and is a good alarm barker. He has learned a few new tricks, and his foster is working on his anxiety issues while riding in a car. Dobie would like to be your new best friend in a quiet adult home.

It also makes for a more harmonious and happy home and can be done at any age, however it is definitely critical for puppies! Puppies absorb the most in the first 6 months of their lives and training and socializing them is important in that time frame. However despite the age of any dog, training helps give us boundaries and establishes pack order in the home. As much as humans love us furry friends, we are still animals and we don't think the same or interpret signals the same way you do. One of the easiest ways to train is using the “Nothing in Life is Free (NILF)” technique. Dogs instinctively look for their “jobs” in life, many were bred to hunt, keep rats away, guard flocks, herd, etc. However the times have changed and many of us don't have to do these jobs anymore.. this can lead to doing other things, things our humans don't always want us to do, like chewing up their shoes. NILF training requires the dog to complete a task, as simple as sit, before any reward is given. The rewards can be play time, dinner, snacks & treats, etc. The dog must "work" for their rewards, this helps establish you as the leader and the dog can focus on listening to you and knowing that if he or she does listen, a reward is sure to follow! Training and socializing outside the home is just as important as with you and your family. Look into local trainers and dog day cares to see if they offer training. These classes are a great way for your dog to get to know other dogs and be comfortable around strangers and people. If you want more individualized attention look for smaller classes or private sessions, this can help you address any worries or concerns you may have about your dog with the trainer. If you want to take it a step further, I would suggest trying dog sports! Agility, flyball, dock diving are just a few of the dog sports out there. If you're new to the scene, find a trainer who will work step-by-step with you to introduce your dog to dog sports. While it may look like fun and easy, an untrained dog can sometimes injury themselves in a sport. Mom and I just finished our first class in Fly Ball and we found out there was a proper way to turn in that sport and mom had to teach me how to do it.. otherwise I risk hurting my shoulders! Some great resources can be found below: Training Classes: Training at home is great and something you should be doing regularly, however, training classes help dogs adjust to strangers and other dogs. Sanctuary dog: Maggie and her son, Calvin, were rescued from Hayward Shelter on 8/20/08. Both were badly neglected. Maggie was never groomed and extremely matted. But after her bath & make-over grooming, she is now beautiful. She is friendly with people she trusts, then gentle, adorable and a sweetheart. Leary of strangers. She did great at her two foster homes and was social, but months later, in a home, she became more fearful of strangers or new people who try to pet her head & learned to growl/nip to protect herself (insecure). She goes up to people for treats, but doesn't want to be petted unless she knows/trust the person. Good on leash and sits for treats. She needs a quiet adult home with routine and to bond to one adult person (kind leader/training experience) only. To protect Maggie, she is now a sanctuary dog with a FFR person whom she is bonded to. With person she bonds to, she is very cooperative, easy-going and well behaved.

Hi! I am 100 percent teenage kitten, that's right, I can be a busy boy. Love to tackle your hand yet usually you don't get scratched, I may act rough but am really a gentleman. Like to take my toys into the bathtub and run around; will "help" with mopping, sweeping, making beds, and will want to help you brush your teeth. Love to cuddle under your chin while you watch TV. I am Adorable and charming and want to be your best friend forever. Great with other indoor cats. Full of personality and life. He loves to play with his toys in the bathtub, and play fetch (actually brings the toy back to me)!Angelo had been to a specialist and got confirmation of a Progressive Restrictive Cardiomyopathy and mild non-progressive cardiomyopathy. The vet could not give us any idea if and when his heart would start giving him difficulties. Vet did state that someday when it does act up there are meds that will help for awhile.

We rescued Titan from a shelter (Alameda) where he was running out of time. At the shelter, he was dog friendly. But once in a foster home, he started to become dog-aggressive to new dogs and had redirect behavioral problem. Very friendly with people. But there's something special about Titan so we decided to put in an extra effort to help him and is responding very well with dogs on-site now at a training facility. At the facility, he now avoids trouble with other dogs, but still need supervision. He's a beautiful dog, very affectionate and loves people. Loves to play ball and well behaved at facility. He needs a very experienced german shepherd person with leadership who will continue his training and exercise him daily. His trainers are willing to continue working with whomever adopts him. He now has a bright future and will thank you every day.

Lilly, a Terrier-Chihuahua mix, is a true warrior princess. Due to an earlier accident, she had her leg amputated, but no one told her she’s a 3-legged dog so she acts like any other dog, only with more courage and zest for life. With her ears erect, she truly looks royal and has the courage of a warrior, guarding hearth and home. Lilly was originally rescued from a shelter by Furry Friends Rescue (FFR) and placed (adopted) in 2006. She was returned to FFR this November 2012 with a crippled left front leg resulting from an accident 2 years ago that had not been treated. After careful consideration and discussions with our veterinary surgeon, it was decided to amputate her leg since it was an impediment to Lilly and could get caught on objects. She also had a dental and few teeth extracted. She recovered from the surgery very quickly and within days she was chasing and retrieving tennis balls and using the doggie door with ease. Lilly is friendly, playful, active and spunky. She's a good girl and is extremely responsible about using the doggie door at her foster home to go outside whenever she needs to eliminate. Lilly will bark at new dogs, but settles down once she knows them. She can be nervous and confused in situations new to her, but she is friendly. Lilly needs a compassionate, understanding and responsible home for life. Her bark warns of intruders and she can stand her ground against dogs several times her size. She great with foster home dog. However, she also has a playful side, scampering after her tennis ball and sleeping with her squeaky stuffed dog. She is also quite a cuddler, on the couch or in your bed, if allowed. Her favorite place to sleep is in a patch of sunlight or under the covers, seeking warmth. Lilly is personality-plus!

He was adopted but now returned to FFR June 22, 2009 because his family now has twin toddlers and less time. He was also nervous of the kids. He is gentle and sensitive. Happy boy who is friendly and well behaved. He enjoys being petted on his head/body but not his rear/hind leg (he will warn/nibble). No medical reason. Behavorial. Now that is comforable at his foster home, he trusts her and no problem. He prefers not to be over-coddled. He's very frighten of the vet office and hates vet exams. Good with other dogs when he lived with 3 others. Nice to new gentle dogs. Will bark back at assertive dogs. He loves his walks to sniff and good on leash. He enjoys lounging around at home and will follow you around. Knows the doggie door. Loves treats and will sit on command. Obedient and well behaved at home. He needs a experienced Cocker Spaniel guardian, someone around more and stable routine. No kids. Quiet and stable adult home. He is soulful and adorable, quirks and all.

Shasta is all black and Rainer is black & white. They are both dog friendly and wonderful companions. Both were adopted Jan. 2005, but now need new homes because family has a baby and no time to care for them. Both are friendly and need committed home for life.

Darling, sweet Docker came to us on 5/5/04 from the Tracy Shelter. Docker is perhaps one of the most remarkable and amazing dogs we have ever met. He is precious and loves everyone. He is always happy and very loved at his sanctuary home. Docker's spine never developed normally and as a result, he has no control or feeling of when he goes potty or urinates. His foster family has to diaper him as you would an infant, which he tolerates very well. Docker continues to see our vets for various medical conditions.
