AB 241 Passes Committee.

Here is the letter from President, Social Compassion in Legislation (SCIL).

Dear Supporters:

Success!

AB 241, Assemblymember Pedro Nava's anti puppy mill legislation, won its vote in the Senate Public Safety Committee this morning!

Senators Mark Leno, Gil Cedillo, Loni Hancock and Darrell Steinberg all voted YES. The Senators listened to the hundreds of animal lovers who called and faxed in support of this good bill.

And congratulations Assemblymember Nava! Thank you for representing the vast majority of Californians who see pets as friends, not products. AB 241 will next be heard in August in the Senate Appropriations Committee. We will alert you when the time comes.

Now, a more personal note. This has been a crazy week in Sacramento. AB 241 has passed Committee, while Senator Florez decided to wait until August to move SB 250 forward. Thanks so much to everyone who has called, faxed and traveled to help our pets live better lives.

Once AB 241 becomes law, no one in California will be able to keep more than 50 unaltered dogs. While that may seem like a lot, in reality many puppy mills keep 500 or more unaltered dogs at one time. All too often the puppy mill breeder dogs spend their life in tiny cages, and sometimes never touch the ground for their entire life.

The awful treatment of dogs in puppy mills is a direct result of the profit mentality of underground animal breeders, whether they have 5 breeder dogs or 500. They believe it is their right to breed and sell animals without any government oversight. And ironically, backyard breeders (and the groups representing them) complained all through 2007 and 2008 that legislation targeting underground breeding was misplaced and should focus only on puppy mills... but now it's those same people loudly complaining about AB 241! They now oppose ANY legislation designed to help pets, a knee-jerk reaction based on a collective paranoia that sees a conspiracy to take away breeding rights and pets behind every piece of pet legislation.

If this all sounds like hyperbole just for effect, I wish it was. The number of people living off the income of their underground, backyard breeding in California is truly staggering. Before we started doing research into this a few years ago, the scope of this problem, and the millions of tax dollars stolen from our state by these people, just wasn't understood. But now, thankfully, our Legislators are starting to notice.

In fact, the California Board of Equalization is now also starting to take an interest in underground breeding. The BOE is beginning to contact breeders to determine their status and see if they are paying their taxes. That's GOOD NEWS! And the breeder response? Are they stepping up, being honest citizens by finally following current breeding laws and paying taxes? Nope. They are instead frantically pulling all references to individual breeders down from breeder websites and AKC lists, in an attempt to go further underground. Shameless.

The honest truth is that backyard breeders, and the hypocritical organized groups making money from their donations while pretending to care about pets, see animals as a tax-free paycheck. It's income that is easily hidden from the Government, even though current law states that anyone selling animals needs to pay sales tax and claim the income. This week Sacramento was overrun with hundreds of backyard breeders, gathering to oppose SB 250 and AB 241. It was quite a sight. Unlike you, they have plenty of time to travel to the Capital, because their day job is sitting in their house tending to puppies while waiting for the females to come into heat again. Those puppies sell for hundreds (or thousands) of dollars each, tax-free. This is a career, their tax-free livelihood, period, and they will never support truly pet-friendly legislation, because they fear that it will cost them money. It's just that simple, and it was in full display this week in Sacramento.

Thank you for keeping up the fight to help pets. They need our voice! Thank you for being honest taxpayers. Thank you for treating your pets with respect, and rescuing pets instead of purchasing them. And thank you for helping stop cruel puppy mills in California!

We are making a difference together in our great state.

Warm regards,

Judie Mancuso

And what a save! He is loyal, affectionate, very intelligent and curious. He has a short, nutmeg-brown coat with black muzzle and eye markings; his tail characteristically curls up over his back, sometimes touching his back. His rescuers were attracted to his very striking pale blue eyes accentuated by black eyelids and his “yoda “ears.. He is about 3 years old, with no health problems, and is neutered, chipped and licensed in Fremont, CA. His shots and topical flea treatment are current, and all records are available. He is house-trained, knows how to “sit” for his meals, but could use more training with his new family. However, given his apparent intelligence, it wouldn’t take long for him to learn other commands.

Best of all, he is very affectionate with his adult and canine family, and plays vigorously but gets along very well with the resident dog of the household. He is not overly friendly with adult strangers but becomes secure to friendly interaction in just a few moments. He is very attracted to children and seeks their attention. However, please note as a general rule, all children should be supervised when interacting with dogs.
His predatory instincts are strong so he stalks and chases all wildlife in the back yard of his foster home, including digging out the pocket gophers. He will sit quietly for hours waiting for squirrels to appear in the trees or back fence. He would not be good in a household with cats. He does not dig to escape and seems to be comfortable on leash, tie-out chain and confined in a fenced yard. He is an excellent watchdog alerting to any visitors, but shows no sign of aggression or viciousness. He must be walked on leash at all times since his curiosity beckons him to run-off and explore with its inherent dangers. Dogs are pack animals and prefer to live inside with their family members, although Lucky enjoys plenty of time outdoors during the day patrolling the property.
He is a wonderful gregarious pet, is a good car rider, and will reward his new guardians with loyalty and affection.

SB 250 - The Final Hearing!

What is SB 250?
-This copy taken from SCIL (Social Compassion in Legistration)

SB 250 will be heard in the Assembly Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, July 15th, in room 4202 at 9:00 am in Sacramento.

This is the final hearing - please come to the hearing if you can!

We need your help getting through this final committee. Please call the committee members from now until next Tuesday night.

Dog & cat breeders and other animal industry lobbyists (CA Cattlemen's Association, CA Farm Bureau Federation, etc.) are out in force trying to kill both SB 250 and AB 241. Don't let them do it!!

This is tough work for all of us. But the payoff will be a huge step for animal welfare in our state and will be reflected across the nation. The animals need us!

Phone numbers you can call and more information is listed here.

Please take action for our animals!

Mason D2379

Mason was rescued from Hayward Shelter on 7/8/09. He is so sweet. A true gentle angel. We all LOVE him.

His manners at feeding time, his sitting, & staying are sound. He can even do a little agility. He takes extreme care weaving poles & steps over jumps in slow motion. It is hilarious to watch. Ky can't really go on long walks. He broke his pelvis when he was a year old. He can walk slow mo around the property & he is a superb lounge lizard for any living room, workshop or deck. He is trustworthy with kids, cats & horses & does not have a wicked bone in his body. He would make an excellent grandfather model to any younger dog. He would also make a great companion for a senior citizen who wants the perfect excuse to take short stroll around the neighborhood.

I am a chipper 'young at heart' boxer & a closet jumper to boot. Don't believe it when you hear that you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I've learned a few agility tricks in my foster home. I might need a little boost from behind to get in the car, but I am dying to get out for some exercise & will wait at the car when the leash comes out. I wouldn't mind being the only dog, but I don't mind fellow canines either. I have vastly improved being around cats & horses. I sit with some effort, I admit I'm a tad arthritic, but I know how to stay, leave the kitchen on command, & wait for permission to eat dinner. I am looking for the perfect adult human companion who wants an excuse to go to the beach or take a hike.

Sociable, mellow and unafraid, she likes to sleep at the foot of your bed, be wherever you are, and sit on your chest when she has the chance. Kory and Konner would make excellent companion felines for an individual or a family.

Konner 04-3549

Konner is being offered for adoption along with his brother, Kory. In these tough economic times our funds are dwindling, what this means is that we're not going to be able to rescue as many animals as before (they all have vet, food, and other costs), especially the special needs ones.

Very sad reality, but we can change this!

Each year, over $250 million dollars is spent housing and euthanizing homeless dogs and cats in California1. Approximately 1 million dogs and cats enter California's shelters each year, and over half of them (500,000+) are euthanized (killed) simply because there are not enough homes. STOP THE CYCLE!

I've entered myself into a contest! If I make it into the top 3 for this week (March 3 - March 10) then Furry Friends Rescue gets entered for a chance to win $10,000!! Imagine all the animals we can rescue, vet, and re-home with that! That's at least 25 animals we can give a second chance too!

So head on over to the website Bissell's Most Valuable Pet Photo Contest and vote for me! You only have to vote once, we'd really appreciate it!

Training your dog will always help strengthen the bond between your family and the dog! It also makes for a more harmonious and happy home and can be done at any age, however it is definitely critical for puppies! Puppies absorb the most in the first 6 months of their lives and training and socializing them is important in that time frame. However despite the age of any dog, training helps give us boundaries and establishes pack order in the home.

As much as humans love us furry friends, we are still animals and we don't think the same or interpret signals the same way you do. One of the easiest ways to train is using the “Nothing in Life is Free (NILF)” technique. Dogs instinctively look for their “jobs” in life, many were bred to hunt, keep rats away, guard flocks, herd, etc. However the times have changed and many of us don't have to do these jobs anymore.. this can lead to doing other things, things our humans don't always want us to do, like chewing up their shoes. NILF training requires the dog to complete a task, as simple as sit, before any reward is given. The rewards can be play time, dinner, snacks & treats, etc. The dog must "work" for their rewards, this helps establish you as the leader and the dog can focus on listening to you and knowing that if he or she does listen, a reward is sure to follow!

Training and socializing outside the home is just as important as with you and your family. Look into local trainers and dog day cares to see if they offer training. These classes are a great way for your dog to get to know other dogs and be comfortable around strangers and people. If you want more individualized attention look for smaller classes or private sessions, this can help you address any worries or concerns you may have about your dog with the trainer.

If you want to take it a step further, I would suggest trying dog sports! Agility, flyball, dock diving are just a few of the dog sports out there. If you're new to the scene, find a trainer who will work step-by-step with you to introduce your dog to dog sports. While it may look like fun and easy, an untrained dog can sometimes injury themselves in a sport. Mom and I just finished our first class in Fly Ball and we found out there was a proper way to turn in that sport and mom had to teach me how to do it.. otherwise I risk hurting my shoulders!

Forums:
There are lots of different dog groups online, such as dogster.com and discussdogs.com and even craigslist.org. While these are great resources to get feedback and opinions, remember to be respectful and aware that sometimes you'll have to agree to disagree with other people's opinions and techniques. Your best bet is always to consult a professional trainer or vet.
To find a professional trainer near you, try checking with training associations. Here's a few listed below:

Everyone is experiencing hardships this year, yet I have seen the spirit of giving shine brighter than before! Everywhere people are coming together to rescue animals, collect food for the hungry, and help give warmth to those who are stuck in the cold.

As people experience economic difficulties they often have to give up their pets. Many end up in the shelters where they are in danger of being euthanized if not adopted or rescued quickly. Some shelters, due to the overwhelming number of animals being dumped, can only give these animals a few days before they're put to sleep.

'Tis the season to give the Gift of Hope and a second chance to save a dog or cat's life. This holiday season, Furry Friends Rescue is asking that you dig deeper into your hearts and considering giving a little more of yourself this year. Perhaps, adopting a new dog or cat, or becoming a foster home so that an animal has a second chance to find a forever home is a way you can give back.

If you can't do that, all rescues and shelters would greatly appreciate monetary and in-kind donations of any amount! Every penny will help save an innocent furry life!

Please consider an online donation to Furry Friends Rescue right now! www.firstgiving.com/ffrholidayappeal

The holiday season is a season of giving.. and of gift giving! If you're thinking of giving a dog or a cat as a pet for someone else, please think thoroughly through your decision before picking up an animal. We are BIG commitments and we want a forever home, not a seasonal one.

There are lots of things to consider when getting a new pet, can you afford the food, vet, and of course the ever important treat and toy bills? Where are you going to get the animal? There are so many puppy mills out there mistreating animals and if you purchase one from a pet store, there are strong chances you're supporting those inhumane places... A puppy mill is a breeding facility that mass produces puppies for sale. There are thousands of puppy mills across the country, producing over 2 million puppies per year. These facilities, most of which are inspected and licensed by the U.S.D.A., are notorious for their filthy, overcrowded conditions and the unhealthy animals they produce. Puppy mills are also the leading contributor to animal shelter overcrowding and the mass euthanasia.

Felicity 09-3519

Felicity is a beautiful and petite 6 year old who's family decided they could not give her enough attention after the birth of their 2nd child and returned her to Furry Friends. Sally Ann was rescued from Hayward Shelter on 2/6/08. She is super friendly, happy and active pup. She's loves attention and playing. Great with other dogs and loves to play with another dog but may try to be the dominate one if allowed. Need experience person to continue with her training. Ok with cats. She has had surgery on her right front leg (has a plate inside). She is now very healthy. I am 100 percent teenage kitten, that's right, I can be a busy boy. Love to tackle your hand yet usually you don't get scratched, I may act rough but am really a gentleman. Like to take my toys into the bathtub and run around; will "help" with mopping, sweeping, making beds, and will want to help you brush your teeth. Love to cuddle under your chin while you watch TV. I am Adorable and charming and want to be your best friend forever. Great with other indoor cats. Full of personality and life. He loves to play with his toys in the bathtub, and play fetch (actually brings the toy back to me)!Angelo had been to a specialist and got confirmation of a Progressive Restrictive Cardiomyopathy and mild non-progressive cardiomyopathy. The vet could not give us any idea if and when his heart would start giving him difficulties. She needs a quiet adult home with experience in handling her when meeting or seeing other dogs and new people and helping her learn it is positive. Since she is doing so well at her foster home, she is now a sanctuary dog so she won't have to go thru another change which is terrifying for her.

Butterscotch 06-2819

Butterscotch lost his eye on a rose thorn when he was a kitten. but that doesn't stop him. He can run and play just like other cats and makes the cutest faces. He's sweet and a bit shy...and would do well in a one kitty household where he can be the center of attention. He was adopted Nov, 2005 by an elderly person who became too ill to care for him and returned him to us. He was adopted again, but months later returned him due to personal health reasons. So, he's back with us in a kind foster home who squeezed him into her home and looking for his forever home as a true family member for life. Once out of his cell, he is very friendly and enjoyed snuggled up to me onto my lap..he snuggled so close as to say..don't let me go! He's a sweetie who seems to be good with dogs and went nose to nose to the cats at our vet office. He was adopted in 2004 but returned in January 2009 because he is fearful of the adopter's home with visiting grand-kids (toddlers) and nipped the 2 yrs old. He needs an experienced quiet adult home only or kids 14 yrs and up. He is well behaved but sensitive type. He really loves to go places in the car and will even help you put on his harness. Docker is perhaps one of the most remarkable & amazing dogs we have ever met. Adores children, hasn't met a dog or cat he hasn't made his fast friend & is the most loving dog. Docker's little spine however, never developed normally & as a result he is not aware when he goes potty. His foster family would diaper him as you would an infant and Docker was just fine with that. Happy, unaware he has any problem at all... He is the most precious pup around. If you would like to have lots of joy in your life, this is your boy. He needs a foster home for 1 week so their current foster home can go on their vacation.

Winston D1095

Winston came to FFRescue at 10 mos. old from the Pinole Shelter in 2002. He was adopted. Fives years later, due to lack of time and new baby, they returned Winston to us. Winston is an all around happy friendly dog but also likes his quiet time at home to relax. He likes to swim but cannot be allowed to since he will get an ear infection. He is a big baby and has a phobia of getting ear drops (need vet tech to give to him) & will nip. Good with other dogs and loves/needs daily hikes/long walks/jogs. Well-behaved inside. He understands sit, stay, down and off. Experienced adult home only.
