“Battle of Heroes Land of Immortals” domain registration followed by Ubisoft trademark

Earlier this week, Ubisoft registered the names BattleofHeroesGame.com and BattleofHeroesLandofImmortals.com.

But it’s not just domains that Ubisoft is getting. The domain registrations have been followed by trademark filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

On December 10, 2013, the company filed two trademarks (US Serial Numbers 86139588 and 86139580) for “Battle of Heroes Land of Immortals” covering computer games.

The “Goods and Services” in 86139580 covers “Entertainment services namely providing an on-line computer game for others over global and local area computer networks and providing information on-line relating to computer games and video games”.

While 86139588 covers “Game software and electronic game programs, namely, software games recorded on CD-ROM and digital video discs for computers; software games recorded on CD-ROMs, digital video discs, and cartridges for console and individual, portable gaming systems; software games that are downloadable from a remote computer site and electronic game software for mobile phones, personal digital assistants, and handheld computers”.

While Ubisoft has made no announcement yet regarding Battle of Heroes Land of Immortals, readers suspect it may be a MOBA.

Both domain names are still parked online and offer no hints about the company’s plans.

Ubisoft registers ‘Battle of Heroes’ & ‘Battle of Heroes: Land of Immortals’ domains

Who knows what is coming next from Ubisoft, but the company made some domain registrations this week that offer some details.

Ubisoft has registered the names BattleofHeroesGame.com (Battle of Heroes Game) and BattleofHeroesLandofImmortals.com (Battle of Heroes: Land of Immortals).

I wouldn’t get too excited as the company doesn’t appear to have too much invested in the yet-to-be-announced title, at least when it comes to domains. Only the dotcoms are registered, and even more surprisingly, at the time of this story being published, LandofImmortals.com is not even registered according to WHOIS records.

That will likely change.

Blizzard’s lawyers take control of Blizzard.tv domain, is there something in the works?

This week, the dispute over the Blizzard.tv name (Case Number: 1528644) was withdrawn after being filed with the National Arbitration Forum back in early November.

So, the question is, were the lawyers at Blizzard Entertainment just trying to defend their intellectual property or does the company have something more planned for Blizzard.tv?

Like, say, a potential competitor to the live game streaming service Twitch.tv.

Blizzard doesn’t often file disputes, and hadn’t filed a complaint since 2011 when it won the transfer of worldoflordcraft.com. So, why now?

Though the complainant in the Blizzard.tv dispute wasn’t officially revealed, it’s pretty much guaranteed that Blizzard Entertainment is behind it. At the time of this story, Blizzard.tv is registered to intellectual property law firm Christie, Parker & Hale LLP – the same firm that has represented Blizzard in past disputes for names like Blizzard-North.com (Claim Number: FA0302000146620). And since the complaint was withdrawn, the domain redirects visitors to Blizzard.com.

Often times, when a domain name complaint is withdrawn, both parties have come to an agreement. And because Blizzard had no guarantee of winning the dispute, it’s possible the previous registrant received some type of payment.

Whether Blizzard Entertainment has something in store for the domain, is only speculation at this point. But live game streaming has become very popular and Twitch has a virtual monopoly.

Last month, Blizzard live streamed an event on Battle.net, prompting one Reddit user to say, “Blizzard should make their own Twitch”.

Electronic Arts files Desert Strike trademarks

Electronic Arts has submitted two new trademark applications for Desert Strike with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, hinting that a remake of the popular 1992 shoot ’em up video game is in the works.

On November 25, 2013, the video game company filed the trademarks (US Serial Numbers: 86128233 and 86128236) for Desert Strike.

Desert Strike was originally released in February 1992 and involved the player piloting an AH-64 Apache helicopter.

A remake of Desert Strike may come as no surprise. The game sold well and for its time, it was Electronic Arts’ highest ever selling game.

So far EA has made no announcement as to a remake, although, there have been many people online calling for a remake throughout the years.

On a domain note, DesertStrike.com is currently registered to Name Administration Inc. according to WHOIS records.

DesertStrike.net and other top-level domains have not been registered.

Complaint Denied: Take-Two loses another domain dispute, this time over GTA.tv

Take-Two Interactive Software had a pretty good track record in 2013 when it came to domain complaints, winning more than two dozen disputes over names like gtatv.com and betagtav.com.

But lately, the company has been running into trouble. The last two rulings have not gone in the company’s favor.

Take-Two recently lost a dispute over a domain name of a fake snuff website it used to own, and now a WIPO panel has denied its complaint over gta.tv, a three-letter domain name whose acronym is often interpreted as “Grand Theft Auto”, a pretty common term these days, which Take-Two seems to think it has a monopoly on.

Details of the ruling, which was posted online today, have yet to be released.

In 2012, Take-Two trademarked the terms “GTA TV” and “Rockstar TV”.

According to WHOIS records, the domain GTA.tv is registered to iCity Corp.

Warner secretly registers domains for several possible Batman vs. Superman film titles

There’s been a lot of debate over the official title of the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film scheduled to be released in 2015.

This week, Warner Bros. secretly registered a host of possible titles through the internet brand protection company MarkMonitor.

Now, it’s likely the debate is going to get more opinions.

According to the latest domain registrations, possible titles include “Man of Steel Battle the Knight”, “Man of Steel Beyond Darkness”, “Man of Steel Black of Knight”, “Man of Steel Darkness Falls”, “Man of Steel Knight Falls”, “Man of Steel Shadow of the Night”, “Man of Steel The Blackest Hour”, and “Man of Steel The Darkness Within”.

Shorter variations of the names were also registered like, “Battle the Knight”, “Black of Knight”, “Knight Falls”, and “The Blackest Hour”.

With regards to MarkMonitor, it’s the same company Warner Bros uses for its very own warnerbros.com (WHOIS) and the registrar for the SupermanvsBatman.com domain (WHOIS).

Here’s a look at several of the names that were privately registered:

For now, it’s all just speculation.

Any of the above names could end up being the title. At the time of this story, Warner Bros. has made no announcement and none of the domains resolve to a web page.

Could something new be in the works at Trion Worlds, maker of internet game Rift?

Several domain registrations in the past week seem to point to the possibility.

Trion Worlds’ CEO Scott Hartsman and brand protection agency MarkMonitor registered a slew of names related to an unannounced project called “Trove”.

MarkMonitor, which is also the registrar for TrionWorlds.com, privately registered names for the phrase “Play Trove” in a number of different extensions like PlayTrove.com and PlayTrove.net. Each of the names reside on Trion’s name servers at TRIONWORLDS.com. While Scott Hartsman scooped up names for “Trove Game” such as TroveGame.com and TroveGame.net.

Trion Worlds Inc. even shows up on the WHOIS record of some “Trove” domains.

None of the domain names currently resolve to a website. But based on the sheer number and timing, one would expect an announcement to come soon.

It’s been more than a month since Valve officially announced its Steam gaming machines. Though the Steam Machine isn’t scheduled to be launched until 2014, more details continue to emerge with a first look at Valve’s Steam Machine prototype being revealed this past week.

To make things a bit more interesting, Valve has registered the domain name SteamStatic.com.

The name was privately registered through Network Solutions earlier this month, but the WHOIS record clearly shows Valve Corporation as the registrant. The only information that is marked private is contact information like the email address.

SteamStatic.com also switched domain servers to VALVESOFTWARE.com in the past 24 hours, however, it does not resolve to a website at the time of this story.

Valve has made no official announcement, so for now, Steam Static will remain a mystery.

It may be something. Or it may be nothing. What is for sure is that Disney Enterprises, Inc. has registered the domain DisneyConsole.com (WHOIS).

The domain was registered this week through Corporation Service Company (CSC), a company that helps businesses protect their brands.

In January 2013, the internet was abuzz with rumors about Disney possibly working with Apple on a video game console after the tech blog Patently Apple uncovered a patent application.

The company released its sandbox video game Infinity in August 2013. This week, Disney Interactive announced that Disney Infinity has already sold 1,000,000 of its $75 starter packs.

DisneyConsole.com may be nothing more than a defensive registration tied to Disney Infinity, either way, it’s just speculation for now.

As of today, DisneyConsole.com redirects users to Go.com, the landing page for Disney content (operated by the Walt Disney Internet Group).

Sony spends a few thousand dollars for TaketheOath.com as PS4 launch date nears [UPDATED]

In a little less than 2 weeks on November 15, Sony will launch the PlayStation 4 (PS4) in North America.

Despite everything that’s going on at the company, Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC for some reason acquired the domain name TakeTheOath.com.

According to WHOIS records, the name switched hands this week from its previous owner to Sony.

It’s anyone’s guess what “Take the Oath” will be. At the time of this story, there is no website present at taketheoath.com.

In early October, TakeTheOath.com had been listed for sale for $2,988 through Rare Names (aka BuyDomains).

“Take the Oath” could be for anything like marketing of an upcoming Sony video game, but for now, it’s all just speculation.

On a separate but related note, Sony has been adding more names to its portfolio lately, but one name still noticeably missing is PlayStation4.com. In July 2013, Microsoft became the first company to secure the matching dotcom domain of its next-generation video game console.

Currently, Playstation4.com re-directs visitors to a video game website that covers PlayStation news. The name is still not owned by Sony according to WHOIS records.

UPDATE 1:. The Take The Oath website is now live at http://playstation.taketheoath.com/. The website is being used to market Killzone Shadow Fall. A message on the website says, “What will you sacrifice for peace? On 11/15/13 find out for yourself. Take the Shadow Marshal oath and, using the PS4 share button, create your very own custom gameplay trailer. Like Killzone Shadow Fall on Facebook to be notified when you can Take the Oath.” You can watch the trailer below.
