Easy Pillow Mat Tutorial

Way back when I first discovered Pinterest there was a popular pin showing these cool stuffed mats for kids to lounge on. I followed the link and it was to a free tutorial that, while cool, was overly complicated and expensive to make. That original tutorial has been removed from the Internet for some reason. BOO, I say!

So, I came up with my own easy (fast and cheap!) way to make them. You may even have everything laying around the house already.

Materials:
One (1) FLAT twin sized bed sheet
Five (5) standard pillows
A measuring stick/tape
Tailors chalk (or your kids colored pencil, ahem)
Sewing pins
Sewing machine

Steps:
Lay your sheet out flat and carefully fold in half lengthwise. You'll be sewing across this width to create 5 pockets

Starting at the hem stitching line at the top of your sheet, with your chalk, mark every 18 inches and pin across the line so nothing moves when you pick it up. Your last seam will be at the bottom hem.

Sewing from the folded edge to the opening, be sure to do solid backtacs at the start and finish of each line of sewing.

Repeat with all the lines. As you move across, roll your sheet, so that it fits under the arm of your machine. On your very first and last seams, just sew right along the existing hemline stitching.

You'll have a top flap that is perfect for the kids to grab to move it around, or perhaps attach something to help roll it up for storage

Stuff each pocket with your pillow. These are the pillows I picked up at WalMart. The everyday price is $2.50. If you've got extras around the house, use them! The beauty part of this mat is that the cover can be removed easily to wash it.

We plan to use our mats for movie nights, even tossing them in the back of cars for road trips, drive in movie nights and fort building.

Easy Home Tip: Move Your Shower Caddy

Admit it, you just smacked your forehead and said "WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT!!!!"

One of the biggest challenges of the bathroom is the shower. Where do you put all the stuff?! Most people (like me) buy a cheap shower caddy, hang it from the shower head and just deal with the soggy, sloppy, mildewy mess.

Well, NO MORE!

Run out and buy a $3 coat hook and install it just above your shower surround. Hang your caddy on the hook. Now it won't be covered in water, your razors and poufs will actually dry and you'll be happier.

Finished Object: Sweet Santa Painting

I was feeling particularly crafty and very spur-of-the-moment yesterday so I ran to JoAnn's and picked up a canvas. I had a vision in my mind and needed to make it NOW.

So, while Xiris was wrapped up in his new Batman video game, I got to work.

Took me about 3 hours, start to finish. I wish I could get more of the detail to show up for you - the beard and hat fluff are highlighted with golds and pearl whites.

I'm really proud of this one, my own work start to finish, no instruction. I did have to google how to make flesh tones with primary colors.

What do you guys think? I know we're done with Christmas, but I couldn't help it!

As you can see below, my husband and I signed up for a painting and decided to turn it into a "couples" painting but splitting the design up and each painting our own half. We had such a great time and these sweet Hooters are now the center of our dining room art collection.

I've gone to three different events this year and I have walked away with three wonderful pieces of art. The latest was a sweet Christmas themed work, and we both did the same design. Below are a few shots "in progress" to show how the artist works you through the piece.

Tutorial: Santa's Flight Diorama

Santa's Flight Diorama

This project was visualized in my mind the INSTANT the *FABULOUS* Tresea at ReeseDixon.com posted her Spooky Bird Diorama for Halloween. I loved it immediately, but since I do not tend to decorate for Halloween I immedately thought "CHRISTMAS!!!!"

Her post has more detailed step-by-step directions, as well as a great video tutorial, so be sure to check it out if you need more details than I am giving here.

Materials:

acrylic paints
acrylic paint "float" or "dry extender"
8" x 8" unfinished wood shadowbox
glittered card stock
Santa sticker
brushes
glitter
Elmer's glue

Directions:
First, you need to decide what you'd like your sky to look like. Your choice of colors will create the "ambiance" you are looking for. I was looking for a "night sky with a city glow" kind of look - so I chose a dark navy blue, a medium denim blue and an ivory.

The goal here will be to use the floating medium to blend the colors together to create a pretty gradient. The addition of the float medium allows you to create that gentle blending with very little work. Tresa explains this really well in her video.

Once I was finished with the sky, I used a small pinhead to add dots in the darker area of the sky to simulate twinkling stars. I let it dry a bit and painted the frame black. I chose to paint it black because it seems to add quite a bit more depth.

While all the paint is drying, cut out your "scene" for the bottom. I used a thick black glittered card stock and cut a random roof top design. I can see this with a forest of tiny little bottle brush trees, even!

Once everything was cut out, I added white glitter to the rooftops to represent snow. You totally don't have to do that. Let it dry really well so you don't smear it while adding it to your shadow box.

OH! When you are cutting out your scene, be sure to leave some extra on the sides and bottom that you can fold into tabs. These tabs will be where you apply glue to hold in your scene.

Here I am trying to demonstrate that I put the scene in about a half an inch away from the back, thus creating more depth.

All that's left to do is add your Santa. I found this great sticker in the scrap booking section of the craft store and I love that Santa isn't a silhouette so he really shines!

70lbs GONE!

WOW! I still fall over everytime I see this comparison! WOW!

I just wanted to post a quick little update to show the progress going over here.

These pictures were taken almost exactly a year apart. What a difference a year makes, huh?

Well, and 70lbs.

I still have 60 more to go - and I'm confident that I will get there within the next 12 months. FOR SURE!

Since people always ask, I'll fill you in on the basics of how I'm doing it.

Along this journey I have learned what works for my body and what doesn't. With some careful experimentation, I discovered the problem was gluten, yeast and dairy. My skin was a mess and I was always retaining water. Indulge too much in these and I was really a mess! As a result, I have gone to a diet that is high in lean proteins and I've cut as much gluten, yeast and dairy out as I can. Any carbs I have are enjoyed before 2pm (mostly in the form of whole grains like oats and quinoa - with beans). After cutting them out, the first week was the hardest - but now I just don't care for them. YAY!

I still enjoy a nice panni every once and a while, and put an all natural creamer in my coffee each morning. I'm eating greek yogurt and low fat cheese (very minimally).

I have also cut out refined sugars. (which, this time of year is the hardest part of all this) And potatoes. No more potatoes!

On the exercise front, I've really embraced spinning, cardio classes, yoga and weight training. Right now, all of that is on the back burner while I teach my leg to walk again and regain muscle mass after a huge surgery on my knee. But I'm keeping the weight down, and it is slowly trickling off. I can't wait to get back to my regular exercise routines and get to my goal, that's for sure!

If you are interested, I recommend two books. Both gave me great insight as to what was going on inside this crazy body of mine and helped create my plan of action.

I'm fine.

I just went thru a big surgery to fix a life-long knee problem and it has had me sidelined.

BUT

I am up and going again. Anyone want to see the pictures? They're awesome - and pretty gruesome too!

Anyway - thanks for sticking around and checking on me. I've got a whole slew of posts coming in the very near future. Our little family has been very busy and there is a ton to share! :)

Review: Peppa Pig Toys, Book and DVD

Recently the Chaos Twins were introduced to a sweet little show called Peppa Pig.

The fun antics of the little snorting sweetie and her family immediately caught thier attention and they've loved it ever since. The show airs on NickJr, and has been popular over seas for quite some time. The series stars Peppa, a smart and energetic little piggy, along with her family – her little brother, George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig – as they play games, dress up, go to school, take family trips and, best of all, jump in muddy puddles. The cute snorts and sweet accents really make the show special.

Since we love the show so much, we were excited to learn that for the first time ever in the U.S., Peppa Pig fans can bring the magic of the hit series home with a new line of Peppa-themed toys, DVDs and books!

We have the new book "Peppa Pig and the Lost Christmas List" by Candlewick Press. The story is so sweet, teaches a valuable lesson and is sure to become a regular Christmas favorite for years to come.

We take her with us to lots of places and she's gotten us through some though situations - just a little squeeze and that funny little snort lightens the mood instantly!

I'm a LUCKY lady!

Last night my husband and I rushed across Chicago's suburbs to meet up for a date night that I was very excited for.

I scheduled us for one of those "Wine and Painting" events. I had been eyeballing this painting for a while and when it showed back up on the schedule I jumped at the chance! I planned the whole thing, at the last minute because our babysitter had a rare evening availability.

Luckily, Xiris was completely on board with doing this... he has a very artistic side as well, and I think he enjoys letting it show every once and while.

The event was small and intimate, and we were the only couple in attendance. The rest of the group was a gaggle of chatty teachers, so we had a blast people watching while we worked (my other hobby!).

The original was two owls on one canvas, but since we didn't want two of the same painting in the house, we decided to wing it (heeee!) and make a diptych from the original.

I cannot tell you how very happy these little hooters make me. They are "us" and so kitchy cool.

I'm so lucky that my sweet partner understands my deep seated need to express my creative side, and he completely embraces it with me. He gets it. He gets me!

Here are a couple of shots in the house with much better light. The restaurant that hosted the event was pretty dim, so we were quite surprised at the vibrancy when we saw them again this morning.

This eBook is filled with 18 patterns that go from home deco, wearable and new techniques. The pictures are clear and the directions are very user friendly. We really liked the wide variety of projects and techniques.

Along with the eBook, we were sent a Tulip Tie Dye kit to get us started. The Chaos Twins chose to dye some plain bucket hats.

While I was setting up, they couldn't wait for me get the water to fill the bottles - so we went with a splatter dyed technique using the dry pigment and squirt bottles. The results are... well... colorful!

The kids love the results, so that's all that matters, right?

I'm still around. Sorry for being quiet. I've a little bit on my mind as of late:

My surgery didn't go as planned, but there is a new course of action and I'm pretty excited about it. We'll be doing some groundbreaking work. Technology is on my side for this one, and I'll be back in action before we know it.

I'll be laid up for a while (hopefully short, but I won't be driving for at least 5 or 6 weeks) so expect to see the crafts rolling through while I heal and try to stay sane! The ChaosTwins will do their best to keep things interesting, that's for sure! :)

Weather!

The weather here this summer has been awful - for some people. People here in the midwest don't appreciate the heat and sun - but I am LOVING IT. Every single hot bit of it. I'm soaking in the vitamins, watching the crystal blue skies and the occassional fluffly little cloud float by.

And bonus: The heat and the humidity can end in some pretty amazing shows at night.

Whenever the weather is prime, you can find me attached to radars, streaming weather reports, reading charts. It's the meteorologist in me... I can't help it. I track hook echos, hoping one is close enough to head out and see (safely, at a distance mind you).
A couple of nights ago, we were prime for a nice show. I love a good lightning show.

I was just messing around with a new to me camera. No tripod or anything. I just left the shutter open and let it go for a few seconds. I was resting the camera on my chest. ;)

Tutorial: Hanging Garden Swing Shelves

Hanging Shelves

You've probably seen a variation of these shelves on Pinterest. I've searched and searched for a tutorial on these, but the only think I can find is a site re-posting magazine photo-shoot images (I think). I've called the Hanging Garden Swing shelves because the original idea looks like they were going for a hidden garden kind of theme for the room.

Anyway, no existing tutorial could be found so I winged it. Alot. But it worked and it was easy, so I wanted to share with you.

Materials:

wood plank (I used one 6' long, 1"x8' board, less than $5)
fabric, amount depends on length of board
paint (I used a Disney pink color, Krylon glitter spray and ClearCoat)
metal 2" D-Rings (we used 3 for our 6' board)
wall hooks (more on those below)

Directions:

Prepare your wood. You could keep things rustic here and use pallet boards, scraps, whatever you have on hand. I opted for a nice cut of wood that I could sand and paint, because I wanted to shelf to be used by my little girl.

I painted two good coats of latex paint after sanding. Once really dry, I sprayed with this SUPER GLITTERY clear coat by Krylon. Seriously.. this stuff is all kinds of awesome. It comes in a few different colors/finishes. One small can goes a long long way. One thing to note - if you are putting this spray on something to be handled, I highly suggest a ClearCoat over the top. The glitter does flake off otherwise. (While I was at this, I repainted the rails of my little one's bed in the same manner. Matchy-Matchy!)

While everything was curing, I headed indoors to my sewing room. To make my straps, I cut two fabrics into 3 2.5" wide strips the width of the fabric. This makes 3 straps that are lined, so you have an inside and outside. I went with Rainbow Stripes for one side and Purple Butterflies for the inside because my little one couldn't decide which she liked better. This way we can change the look of the straps just by turning them inside out! Neat!

To make the straps, I ironed the strips, wrong sides together, pinned well and ran the cut edges through my serger set on a nice tight stitch. This really made a nice firm strap. Repeat with the other two straps. To close the ends, I put one end through the metal D-Ring and then laid the strap ends together and serged them. If you want to be really fussy, use your sewing machine to tack down the resulting hem.

Here, you can make things easier on yourself by purchasing wide strapping. It comes in lots of colors and you can find it in the fabric store over in the decorate ribbons and trims on the plastic reels. Buy it by the yard (the length will depend on how long you want your "garden swing" ropes to be. You could even go with thick rope from the hardware store if you wanted to keep with the garden swing theme.

To hang, I highly suggest you locate the studs in your wall. We used these hooks from Home Depot. They hold 50lbs each, so you don't technically have to be into studs. They are a little pricey at $3 each, but this shelf is going in a kids room, so safety first!

OOK Pro Picture Hangers

Xiris located our studs, and tapped the hooks into the wall for me. I put the wood through the straps and then hung them on the hooks. Make sure your straps are hanging straight down. Because this shelf is hung over my daughters bed and I didn't want to having anything fall off on her, I have the wood very slightly tilted back to the wall. This keeps her special dolls from clobbering her at night. :)

WOW! That room is Perfectly Pixie Purple!

To cover the less than pretty (BUT SAFE) wall hooks, I hot glued great big silk flowers over them.

Dirty Girl!

I'm a Dirty Girl

Ladies - if you want to empower yourself, feel good about yourself, challenge yourself - I *really* suggest that you run the Dirty Girl 5k. They are all over the country and raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

I ran it this weekend, conqured every single obstacle and had SO MUCH FUN doing it.

I walked away caked in mud, smiling ear to ear, feeling empowered and stronger than ever before.

(PS- Dirty Girl didn't ask me to write this - I loved it so much I had to share. I'm already planning next years run as a goal for my surgery recovery)

Fast and Easy Father's Day Tie

This project came together very fast (think before morning coffee fast) and in the cheap- but it'll be a huge hit.

I wanted something more than just a plain old tie for Xiris this year, but I have to be careful because he works in a super conservative place.

Supplies:

Kids hands (we did one hand of each CT)
Tie
Empty spray bottle and water
Tulip Soft Fabric Paint

Directions:

Pour paint into spray bottle, adding just enough water to make it squirtable.
Lay out tie on paper or drop cloth, and place kids hands in desired designs. My kids don't like getting messy, so I traced on paper, cut it out and placed it on the tie. I weighed down with tiny pebbles.
Do a few practice squirts off to the side and then gently must your tie. We squirted heavier near the bottom and the moved upwards lightly. This gave a neat star field pattern that fades to the top.
Allow to dry for a second or two, and remove hands or patterns carefully.
Let dry fully. Cover with a clean cloth and press at as high of a temperature as your tie fabric will allow.
