I was making idle conversation at the bar last night and asked the girl an innocent question about why she kept checking her phone. She stammered out that she was arranging to meet her boyfriend, but she said "boyfriend" with a pause and a shake of the head, in the way that boys say "girlfriend" when they've had a few and can't come up with a quick cover story. Flattered.

I think ubiquitous access to my email has actually made me a much worse person to correspond with. I am finding, to my shock, that more and more emails are slipping between the cracks, particularly if I read the email on a mobile device and then think I'll get to responding later. I won't. [I blame drinking and airplanes.] So I'm very sorry if I've missed your email, it's probably not because I hate you.
