Bahrain Predictions

For the Bahrain race, it looks like the Brawn, Williams and Red Bulls will be fast again. I hope it will be a dry race (it is a desert - it should be!), so again we can really see the pace of these cars. Bahrain is second only to Monza in flat-out acceleration.

These predictions were made just after the 1st Friday practice:

1st

Button

2nd

Vettel

3rd

Rosberg

4th

Trulli

5th

Webber

6th

Barichello

7th

Glock

8th

Heidfeld

9th

Hamilton

10th

Alonso

I also predicted that Button will be on pole, Fisichella will be the slowest qualifier and that Nakajima will be the first to drop out.

I think there will be 17 drivers finishing the race.

I am sure that Sunday afternoon I will be proved wrong, but my predictions for the last race seemed to be pretty accurate so I will see how this week turns out.

Video of F1 2009 By Codemasters

* UPDATE * My concerns were agreed, as the comments on the Youtube see to point out that it is a rather poor rFactor mod. It seems I bit the F1 Game bug and got all excited. There is a community forum over on the Codemasters site which should display the latest information as it is released

Is this an exclusive video for the latest Formula 1 game, out in October 2009 and developed by Codemasters? I'm not sure.

This development footage certainly does look exciting, and I am looking forward to playing an F1 game on the XBox 360:

2009 Australian GP: Post Qualifying Analysis

Well, the 2009 season has started with an exciting shake-up to the F1 Teams.

The Ferraris, McLarens, BMW and Renault look to have been overtaken by BrawnGP, Red Bull and Williams over the winter, but the form is very close, with just over half a second separating the top 10 at one point.

Whilst the management at Honda may be kicking themselves for dropping out, BrawnGP have caught the British Underdog mentality and blocked out the front of the grid for the first race of the 2009 season.

Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello have justly deseved the success they have found after some awful seasons with an uncompetitive car in recent times.

McLaren may have sold engines to BrawnGP, but it appears they have swapped places with the Brackley outfit, with Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen struggling for performance, and were due to start the race in 14th and 15th place, but a gearbox penalty means Lewis will now start in 18th, with a late ruling putting both Toyotas to the back of the grid.

The two Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa are back at 6th and 7th place, and failed to match the pace of the Brawn cars, with Raikkonen almost a second slower than Button. The pre-race weights also shows that the Brawn cars were not running light. The pole sitter Button weighed 664.5kg, 10 kilos heavier than the Ferraris.

The race starts at 7am, UK time on Sunday.

2009 F1 KERS Lowdown

With the 2009 F1 effort based around simplifying the sport, going back to the 90s style of slick tyres and less aero, it was then decided to add one of the most technological pieces of engineering to the cars.

KERS, or Kinetic Energy Recovery System stores energy whilst braking and converts it into power. There will be two types of KERS system - battery and flywheel.

The battery system, tested by several teams, uses the braking energy and storing it in super-capacity batteries, which is then released when a button is pressed on the wheel.

The alternative flywheel method, which may be used by Williams, Honda and Toyota. When not used, the flywheel keeps spinning until the power is needed. Then it gets coupled to the rear wheels to increase the power.

At the start, the amount of energy stored will be about 80bhp, avaliable for 6.7 seconds per lap in an initiative to get more overtaking into the races.

This added technology could makes the sport less of a driver's sport, and more and more about tactics. This season the pit stops seemed to be at the forefront of the tactical decision-making - by adding KERS this adds yet another dimension for the teams to strategise and take more away from the drivers. Whether the decision of when to use the KERS will be the decision of the drivers or the team.

The system hasn't been without its flaws. Whilst testing the system, a BMW engineer was badly shocked, and since then teams have been making precautions, such as wearing thick rubber gloves, and Toyota have contemplated not using the system until midway through the system.

With KERS not being compulsory it will be interesting to see who will try and gain an advantage by having it at the very start of the season, and to see how much of a difference it will make to those teams. Would the additional weight of the KERS system be outweighted by the lap time increase (around 0.3s per lap)?

So what is your opinion on the KERS system? Beneficially for the whole car industry or a waste of development money? Better for spectators or making less of a drivers sport?

2009 F1 Cars Beaten With Multiple Ugly Sticks!

Having seen pictures of the 2009 F1 cars, the balance of the aesthetics looks really off, because the front wings are so wide and flat, and the rear wings are very narrow and small.

Have a look for yourself over at GPUpdate.net: http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/news/2008/11/18/this-is-the-worst-looking-f1-car-ever/

Before these cars were seen, F1 Fans had nostalgic views of the 90's F1 cars, and a simpler design, but these 2009 cars just look the like 2008 cars with the wings removed with comical alternatives, something more likely to be seen on a Top Gear challenge.

Perhaps people's perceptions will change, but it doesn't look great in these early stages.

Force India in Mercedes F1 Engine, KERS and Gearbox Deal

For 2009, the VJM02 Force India F1 car will be powered by a Mercedes engine and gearbox, KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) and hydraulics.

The newest Formula 1 team in the paddock have made good progress based on their modest budget, and were set to gain a good result in Monaco, before former World Champion Kimi Raikonnen lost control and went into the back of Adrian Sutil.

This deal will keep the teams budget down for the next season, and hopefully provide reliability for the forthcoming season.

"‘These new resources and developments will provide an enormous boost to our technical armoury and, as a result, we have high hopes of making good progress in 2009 and beyond"

7 Winning Drivers Made 2008 F1 Season Exciting for New Drivers

With Sebastian Vettel, Robert Kubica and Heikki Kovalainen all winning their maiden races this season, the future looks promising for F1 drivers.

Personally, the most exciting prospect for next season is Robert Kubica. The BMW team look to be heading in the right direction, having stopped developing the 2008 car and focusing development on their new 2009-spec car they should be a strong start next season.

This decision may not have satisfied Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld though, as their performance dropped off, and lost Kubica's chancing of winning a World Championship in 2008.

Sebastian Vettel is another promising talent, winning his first race at a wet Monza, outperforming the rest of the drivers, and producing good results at the end of the season.

His progress did follow a steep learning curve however, as in his first 5 races, he retired in 80% of them, but this improved, and in the last 5 races of the season, he was in the top 5 for 60% of those.

There were some concerns when it was announced that he was joining Red Bull. Despite being the number one team of the two, with Mark Webber and David Coulthard, the results haven't been as good as the Torro Rossos, which is largely down to the poor Renault engines, which have not been as powerful as the Ferrari engines.

Next season is almost 5 months away, but the teams are going to start unveiling their new (less-aero and slick tyre) cars in late January, with BMW launching their F1.09 Chassis on the 20th January.

Dramatic Final Race Makes Hamilton Youngest Ever F1 Champion

Despite Felipe Massa driving the perfect race in Brazil, it wasn't enough to stop Lewis Hamilton becoming the youngest ever World Champion.

The Brit rode his luck during the race, which was made more exciting by the sudden downpour just before the race.

Hamilton drove a conservative race, and the plan almost didn't work, with Fisichella, Vettel and Glock trying to spoil Lewis' race by holding him up. Alonso played his part by driving a stellar race, proving his F1 credentials yet again, with Raikkonen finishing 3rd.

There was confusion at the Ferrari camp, because as Massa drove past the chequered flag, he was the winner on points, with the Scuderia and the Massa family celebrating, which was to be short-lived, as Hamilton drove past an extremely slow Glock on one of the final corners, taking back 5th, which he lost by a fantastic overtaking move by Vettel.

Whilst driving up to parc ferme, Massa was very emotional after being told that he had to won the Championship, only to be told otherwise on the parade lap. Lewis was told on Turn 1, and on the way back to the garage looked lost for words.

Lewis is the first British driver in 12 years to win the F1 World Championship, since Damon Hill in 1996.

As it turns out the 2009 cars will look much more like the 1996 cars, using slick tyres and less aero next season, whilst introducing the KERS system - a Kinetic Energy Recovery System, introducing a 'boost' button for more overtaking manouvers.

The first race of the 2009 season is the Australian GP in March 29th! But stay tuned for all the team news and driver confirmations on FWon.co.uk

What Hamilton Needs to do to Win the 2008 Season

The last race is fast approaching, so whilst you watch the race, have this stats in mind - For Lewis Hamilton to win the 2008 F1 Season:

He must finish at least fifth to be champion, if Massa wins in Brazil
He must finish at least seventh, if Massa is second
If Massa is third or lower, Hamilton is champion regardless of his result

But Massa has not ruled out winning the Championship, and feels the home race will play into his favour.

"I am a local driver, I am Brazilian, so it does help and I am sure people will be rooting against Hamilton. I have high hopes. I would rather arrive here seven points ahead not behind, but I am optimistic. I hope to have a good race, I want to win the championship but the rest does not rest on me. The optimism is always 100 percent."

The question remains, can Lewis Hamilton keep his cool? Whilst Massa is below on points, these have mainly been down to mechanical or team errors, whilst Hamilton has lost points due to his erratic driving style and sometimes hot-heading tactics.

It looks set to be a dramatic final race!

F1 2008 season countdown

With just 7 days to go until the final race of the 2008 season, climaxing in São Paulo, Brazil at the Interlagos circuit.

The circuit is described as "known for its many inclines and bumpy surface, which ... can take their toll on an F1 car" - Wikipedia

Last seasons dramatic final race was won by Kimi Räikkönen, finishing strongly last season to win the championship. The year before, Felipe Massa won his home GP, and in 2005 Kimi Räikkönen won again, this time in a McLaren.

This has been a circuit which suits the Ferrari more than the McLaren, but Ferrari need more than a 1-2 to be able to win the Drivers' Championship. With all the pressure on Lewis Hamilton, can he drive conservatively, and get solid points, or will he push to win the season in style?

Can Torro Rosso Win Another GP This Year?

With Vettel's fantastic win at Monza, can Torro Rosso replicate the success in Singapore, Japan, China or Brazil?

The team with both Vettel and Bourdais have have good races in the latter half of the season, but Vettel was the driver most likely to drop out of the race, doing so in 3 times this season.

Sebastien Bourdais has been unlucky in his season so far. His stall in the Monza GP masked his P4 qualifying place and fastest times at some stages of the Grand Prix.

The Torro Rosso team have nothing to lose, whereas McLaren and Ferrari are competing for points and typically won’t push too much to avoid crashing or loosing all possible points.

But Torro Rosso are far from the third best team. BMW have had solid results, and are the only other team to win a GP other than McLaren or Ferrari. BMW this season have picked up 117 points, only 12 less than McLaren.

The former Minardi team, headed by Gerhard Berger look to improve next season, but with their best talent Vettel moving to Red Bull next season and the 2009 lineup unconfirmed can the team improve?

F1 Spa-Francorchamps 2008 Preview

This weekend is the F1 Belgium GP at Spa-Francorchamps.

The Spa-Francorchamps circuit is one of the most favoured on the F1 calendar for spectators and drivers. The currently off-form Kimi Raikkonen is usually dominant at this circuit, winning here in 2007, 2005 and 2004 in the wet and dry.

But very soon, Ferrari have to decide whether they make Felipe Massa their title contender for the season and focus their attention on his race, or back Kimi for the Championship again. Kimi has been behind Massa in the last 3 races, but can Ferrari risk losing points to McLaren so late in the season?

Hamilton’s F1 debut at Spa did not go as well as the self-confessed lover of the circuit would have liked. He finished 4th after a lacklustre performance.

The betting odds are (to win outright - as of Wednesday):
Hamilton 7/4
Raikkonen 2/1
Massa 2/1

Despite the best odds being with Hamilton, Raikkonen’s past record may prevail, and if Kimi wins the race, it will firmly put him back into the title race, but there is another possible problem for the Italian firm.

Their engine has suffered from problems this season, and Spa is a very demanding circuit for the engine (72% of the time is spent at full throttle), so will Ferrari have to ease off to make the engine last, scuppering their chances at a win?

Weather forecast for Sunday (as of Wednesday):
Clear with max temp of 18 degrees

Should Massa be Ferrari's Number 1 Driver?

With an uncharacteristic run of performance from the current World Champion Räikkönen at the moment, and with only 6 races left in the season, should the emphasis be on making Massa the next World Champion?

It is one question to ask whether Räikkönen can improve his current form. His last 3 races have seen him finish 9th, 3rd and 18th (although car troubles have to be blamed for some of this performance)

Considering that Massa has 7 more points then Kimi, and yet he is still 6 behind Lewis Hamilton, you could see that, in a race situation, where Ferrari can choose a strategy that favours Massa, it could have a benefit, rather than have teammates fight for vital points, to focus on the current best performing driver.

In the era of Michael Schumacher, it was a lot more common for Massa to be the second driver, and the feeling was that he was behind held back, in terms of his potential by having to be 'number two'. In the last two seasons without Schumacher, Massa's skill and race pace and improved dramatically, with the exception of the Silverstone GP, Massa has often outshone his team-mate, who is reputed to be on £25 million a season.

Massa and Hamilton have won an equal amount of GPs this season (4), doubling Räikkönen's wins of just 2. You cannot doubt Räikkönen's pace however. He is a constant fastest lap winner, but his recent performances have seemed to lack spark and enthusiasm.

But before Ferrari make that decision, lets see what Räikkönen achieves at Spa-Francorchamps. He hasn’t lost the Belgium GP since 2002.

Valencia Street Race this weekend

After a 3 week break, the F1 is back, with a brand new circuit in Valencia, Spain for the European GP.

It is a new circuit this season, and with new asphalt it will probably take most of the weekend to get rubber down and increase grip levels.

The circuit is purpose built, with concrete walls surrounding the majority of the track, however it does include wide run offs where needed, so expect more finishers for this race.

The 190mph track is one of the fastest on the calendar, and should make for some exciting racing. Can McLaren make it 4 wins out of 4, or will Ferrari up their game?

Analysis of F1 Results After 11 Races

So far, the racing has been very interesting, with some eventful races and unusual results. You can download all of the current results after the 11 F1 races here:

Having just these drivers in your predictions for every race would have scored 28 points so far.

With an unpredictable Valencia street race in 2 weeks (a previously unraced circuit), scoring maximum points is getting vital in the closing stages of this 2008/09 F1 Season. With 7 races remaining, there is a maximum 154 points up for grabs, so there is everything to play for.

Looking at the previous statistics, it is rare that one driver replicates his position the next race, so making weekly predictions could improve your points for these last races. The closing time as ever is at 10pm on the Friday before the race weekend.

According to Donington Park themselves, the 2010 F1 GP will be held away from Silverstone for the first time in 21 years. This is the latest in a long line of new tracks on the F1 calendar, which has included the Valencia and Singapore street circuits.

Silverstone first hosted the British Grand Prix in 1948, and was well loved by the F1 Drivers.
The new 10 year deal at Donington (which also hosts The British Motorcycle Grand Prix, The British Touring Car Championships and World Superbikes) is set to put in £100m investment into the track and its facilities, spread over 5 years.
Well that is just going to go down so well with all the fans isn't it!

Added to that is the news that this will be Coulthard's last season in F1, which most importantly means a free space at Red Bull for a new Driver (Antony Davidson?)

Showers Predicted at Last Magny-Cours F1 Race

This may turn out to be the last Grand Prix held at Magny-Cours, but then again, they said that last year.

The French Grand Prix has been held at Magny-Cours since 1991, with rumours being that it will be replaced by a <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Paris street</st1:address></st1:street> race in 2009. With a redesign in 2003, it remains a flat circuit, with little overtaking opportunities, apart from the Adelaide hairpin; a first gear tight hairpin, which can be attacked hard.

The weather predicts showers on Saturday, and as has been proven at Monaco, races can change dramatically on the weather conditions, so there may be a chance that it will be unlike the uneventful races of previous years.

In 2006, Schumacher clinched his 8th win at Magny-Cours, a Formula One record which still stands today.

Ferrari have won the last 7/10 races at Magny-Cours, and this has been partly down to their notoriously longer wheelbase, which suits tracks like this more than slower cornered tracks, such as Monaco. The F2007 had a longer wheelbase than its current F1 car, and whilst Ferrari has shortened the length, McLaren have increased theirs this season, but with an ever-improving BMW team, the race predictions are hard to call.

Last year, Räikkönen won, making himself a major title contender, after Hamilton struggled to keep up with the pace of the F2007. There were 5 retirements last year, most memorably from Albers, who memorably drove away whilst still being connected to the fuel rig.

With Lewis Hamilton, making an unusual error, colliding into Kimi, it made the 2008 Canadian GP a wide open race, with some very unusual results.

The track condition looked poor, and many had problems with grip, sliding and crashing out, mainly the Force India and Renault cars.

However, it was BMW who shone this race, with Kubica making another flawless driver, to clinch BMW's first win, and added to the steady results of the last 7 races, it has made BMW a serious constructors competitor.

Most people chose drivers in the top 10, but it was only Nico Rosberg, who gained Mark Hoppe and Mark Tucker a bonus point. Timo Glock was an outside choice, and David Coulthard finished a race, which has been a rare sight this season, with a run of bad luck striking him.

The McLarens look strong this weekend again at Monaco, and statistics show this is not unusual.

The Monaco Grand Prix is always the event most drivers and spectators look forward to. Its winding, street circuit makes for exciting driving, and although one of the worst circuits for overtaking, it has produced some memorable racing.

With no run offs, and the absence of traction control, it could be an even more eventful race than last year, not forgetting McLarens actions at Monaco last year.

         Monaco always provides close racing

Both Fernando Alonso and David Coulthard are the most successful drivers racing this weekend, both winning twice at Monaco; Coulthard in 2000 and 2002 with McLaren, and Alonso in 2006 and 2007 with Renault and McLaren.

It is predominantly a McLaren dominated race (winning 14 times in total), with 2005 and 2007 being a Q1 to P1 for the team, with Raikonnen and Alonso both qualifying on pole and going on to win for them. The stats also show that whoever qualifies on Pole usually wins.

With new tarmac on the start / finish straight, and a soft compound used, the start race toward the first corner should provide some wheel to wheel action.

Vettel will be lucky to score points again this week, because as well as his poor performances, he is having to drop 5 places due to an unscheduled gearbox change, following Scuderia Torro Rossos ST3 launch. Bourdais does not get a penalty because of his retirement in Turkey.

Highlights of the Monaco practices are avaliable on ITVs F1 Site, as it a TV guide.

Super Aguri Withdraws from F1

Four rounds into the season, financial difficulties force Aguri Suzuki to withdraw his team from the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship.

Its an unfortunate scene, especially with some memorable overtaking from Taku Sato at Canada last year.

I posted a blog for FWon in February about their difficulties here: http://fwon.co.uk/?view=plink&id=125

Hopefully Taku Sato and Antony Davidson can find a drive in next years championship.

Changes will be made to the prediction system, so that these two drivers cannot be selected.

For those of you who may have one, or both of the drivers selected in your predictions for this week, i am most probably going to select the person above them in the drivers' points championship

17

Rubens Barrichello

0

18

Nelsinho Piquet

0

19

Takuma Sato

0

20

Anthony Davidson

0

So, if you have selected Sato, then this will be replaced with Barrichello, and Davidson will be replaced with Piquet.

Can BMW Continue the 2008 Success?

2008 Has proved already to be a successful year for BMW Sauber. Currently leading the Constructors Championship. So far they have managed:

2 second places
1 third place
Pole Position

Not bad for 3 races, and have been more reliable than Ferrari, and more consistent than McLaren. The driver lineup is also promising, with 23 year old Robert Kubica producing some very quick lap times, outqualifying Nick Heidfeld 3:0, however the 30 year old has been the more consistent driver, and the one with more experience.

It can only be a matter of time before they win their first race it seems, even if Ferrari or McLaren have to make mistakes for them to do that.

The Circuit de Catalunya is the next circuit on the race calendar, and has been a dominant circuit for Ferrari, so expect another possible 1-2 from the Scuderia, however with BMW showing it can keep up with Ferrari's race pace, do not discount a BMW being on the podium again, or even Pole Position.

The Spanish GP is on the weekend of the 25-27th April 2008, so Fantasy F1 Players, make sure to get your predictions in by the Friday 25th April 10pm.

To finish, here are a few statistics from the last 3 races to help in your predictions.

Kovalainen has been 5th twice
Webber has been 7th twice
Vettel has retired from all 3 GPs

F1 Bahrain GP Preview

The Bahrain GP started in 2004, and remains one of the hottest races of the calendar.

Turn 6 is a fourth gear 190KM/H corner, which pulls the largest 3.57G on the corner, and with the heat, the demanding circuit, and the dust which can settle on the track means that the 4th Bahrain GP should be an interesting one, especially due to the lack of traction control.

Ferrari is the only team to have tested in Bahrain, so expect the Prancing Horse Team to be extremely competitive on this circuit. Cooling will be a concern for the team, and during the Malaysia race this year, Ferrari opened up more cooling ducts to cool their engine, and during the first two races, there have been problems with the Ferrari Type 056 engine.

Results of the previous Bahrain GP:
2006: Fernando Alonso - Renault

Analysis of the 08 Australian F1 Qualifying

The first qualifying of the session couldn’t have been more eventful, as the form book was thrown out of the window with some exciting driving since the removal of TC.

There were some impressive teams and drivers, and some who seemed to under perform. Here is a short breakdown:

Winners

BMW: Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld seems to have a really good car under them, as they produced blisteringly fast hot laps, and Kubica would have been on Pole, were it not for loosing around 2-3 tenths running wide and showing perfect car control on the power slide. Nick Heidfeld performed slightly less than Kubica, but still managed a 5th place.

Honda: Many people had discounted Honda before this season started, however after finding 1 second a lap in pre season tests, the team performed well and just managed to get placed outside the Top 10. Things look promising again, as Ross Brawn had stated that he plans to roll out many more aero upgrades.

Toyota: Jarno Trulli, and Timo Glock managed a respectable 6th and 9th place, and although their race pace has sometimes not mirrored the qualifying, they looked very convincing.

Losers

Renault: It seems Nelson Piquet found his first F1 race difficult, as he was placed a lowly 21st and Alonso managed 12th. It seems that Renault have lost their way after the back-to-back championship season wins.

Ferrari: After a strange strategy, which involved waiting until the very last minutes of Q3 to bring their drivers out, Kimi then had a problem in Q2, where, after producing his fastest 2 sectors, a fuel pressure problem hampered his chances, and he had to limp back to the pits, where he was pushed back to the garage from the mechanics, meaning he could not go back out again.

Massa was slightly slower than the McLarens’, however their race pace ensures that Massa should be looking for a podium place for the Sunday race.

Can Kimi win the World Title Again in 2008?

It’s getting closer and closer to the start of the 2008 Formula 1 Season, which starts on March 14th in Australia’s Albert Park. Testing is going on at the moment, and teams are improving the new 2008 cars this very moment.

Ferrari looks like a force to be reckoned with again in 2008, with their new car looking extremely reliable and quick. So, with this in mind; can Kimi Räikkönen win the title again for the second year in a row?

There is no doubting that Kimi is Number 1 driver at Ferrari, and with Alonso moving to a less competitive Renault car, the fight looks more like Kimi vs Lewis.

Undoubtedly, it was Lewis who stopped himself from winning the title last year, which looked certain to be his before the Chinese GP. But since that race, and the fateful conclusion Lewis suffered, the pressure was on, and Kimi with a nothing-to-loose attitude made good use of all of Lewis’ mistakes.

Will Lewis get a chance like that again? I think not. Ferrari suffered from some out of character problems early in the season, however, with the new Ferrari looking better than ever, and the McLaren conservatory upgraded since the spying incident I believe Ferrari will be in the lead of the Constructors and Drivers Championship from the very start.

Will Honda's F1 Team Be Anymore Competitive This Season?

With the addition of Ross Brawn, the brand new RA108; this has been successfully redeveloped from the rather poor RA107.

If Honda needs to be back at their 2006 success, with Jenson picking up his first win in Hungary in the wet I think they need another 1 or 2 years with Ross Brawn at the helm, as he stated at the launch, he didn’t have as much input in this car as he would like.

To be honest, all Honda needed to have done was to make a consistent car this season, and they can improve on last years. The RA107 was very unpredictable, in the wet, the dry, fast and slow circuits, but down force was its major problem last year, stated to have been a badly calibrated wind tunnel.

With BMW’s success, it would be unlikely for Honda to gain the 3rd Constructors place in this decade, but Renaults decline last year hints that Honda maybe able to fit into that 4th place by 2009 if all goes well. However, major achievements need to be made, as the solid ‘middle teams’ or Williams and Red Bull don’t appear to be wavering any time soon.

Toyota problems need to improve this season and the next, or it was said that they will pull out after 2009 if things do not progress, and hopefully Honda won’t be shamed by its much smaller brother Super Aguri this year, who have managed to pass Honda using fundamentally Honda’s ‘06 car, despite the commendable drives from Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson.

So, in conclusion, will they be more competitive this season? Yes. But there won’t be the huge leap some people are expecting.

F1 Drivers views on lack of Traction Control in 2008

With the 2008 season banning traction control, including launch control it is sure to make the races more interesting, especially starts and difficult weather conditions. For the first time in seven years, the paddock will be without TC, and instead using a new common ECU created by a subsidiary of McLaren, (McLaren Electronics) which has created some scepticism from particular faces in F1, particularly Mario Theisen, Team Boss of BMW Sauber.

“It’s just that the company is controlled by a competitor, and that’s not a good situation to be in.”

Testing with the new ECU started in Barcelona at the start of December and had continued in Jerez over the Christmas break. Comments from drivers appear to be mixed, but appear to be happy about the change. Felipe Massa has been one of the more outspoken drivers, not in favour of the TC ban. He commented that it would make races more dangerous:

“From a safety point of view I think limitations in the use of electronics is a step backwards.”

However, on a more positive note, drivers from the non-TC GP2 series appear to be in favour of the change, and are looking forward to the results:

Lewis Hamilton:

"Perhaps the better drivers will do a better job, so we will see what happens through the season."

Kazuki Nakajima:

“It’s good for me to have a simpler car because the driving style you need is closer to GP2.”

Including outstanding driver in the wet, Jenson Button:

“It’ll also put more control of the car back in the hands of the driver, which is a good thing, and it should suit my driving style.”

This comes as it seems possible that slicks could make a comeback in F1 again, increasing grip lost by removing TC, allowing more driver involvement in the sport.

Insider sources in an electronics supplier to the F1 series have commented to me that electronics went to such a height in past years, that by using sensors in the circuit, the cars actually could slow themselves down, if telemetry showed that they were going too fast into the corners. Something had to change, and the lack of TC seems to be a welcome move from many F1 fans.

Who will be your Fantasy F1 drivers of 2008?

That classic 'fantasy F1' method allows a user to choose two drivers and two cars, allowing points to be scored on those 4 choices and based around a budget.

This version of fantasy F1 makes the user a lot more involved, as you choose the top 10 drivers to finish the race, scoring 1 point if your driver is in the top 10, and another bonus point if you have successfully predicted his finishing position. As well as drivers, you predict who will be on pole position and final qualifier (not including penalties), who will drop out first and which manufacturer will bring back two cars first.

This allows for much more involvement, and you can make predictions every race weekend, or leave your current choices.

So. Who would be your top 10 finishing drivers of 2008? Which manufacturer will win the Constructors? Who will be the worst qualifier?

F1 Drivers chosen on sponsorship deals, not talent

This may seem to be an outspoken post, and in fairness it is in a way, but it goes to show that being a good driver isn’t enough to get into formula one nowadays.

Reading the latest driver line-ups, there are a few in there which seem to be interesting choices. Kazuji Nakajima’s Williams drive for one. After his problems at the very end of last season, not mentioning the pit stop incident (which the crew are still recovering from) it seems that the main reason he got the drive was because of Toyota, Williams engine supplier and offered a financial reward to secure the seat. Incidentally in 1987, Honda wanted Williams to use their engines, but only on the condition that a certain Mr Satoru Nakajima (Kazuki’s Dad) would take a seat. Now, back then they refused, and there still are teams out there which have refused offers like this.

Thanks to the reigniting of the newly-named Force India F1 by Indian Vijay Mallya and a budget of around $100m Force India have said that:

“In the past the team were looking for money, which was the prime motivating factor for the driver line-up. Now that has changed.”

This is great news for the team, especially because of the recent driver tests at Jerez, including newly-released Giancarlo Fisichella, which would be a welcome addition to Adrian Sutil alongside him.

The earning curve in teams last season went from McLaren Mercedes £421m to Spyker’s $36m. Williams were 8th in the list with $97m and have managed to maximise their funding, based on last seasons results.

The problem is that nowadays, sponsorship and money is so important to the sport, it is vital that all teams can maximise their funding, but it seems that some of the teams have substituted talent for cash, but in the end, it is the results in 2008 that do the talking.

Teams announcements on 2008 F1 cars

The development of the 2008 cars is fully underway, with Jerez tests and ongoing development back at HQ; the F1 teams are in full flow for developing the '08 cars.

After McLarens 'green light' from the FIA regarding the development of their MP4-23 car (basically stating that they were cancelling the February meeting in which the WMSC were going to rule if the MP4-23 had benefited from Ferrari Intellectual Property) a weight had been lifted from the Woking based team, especially concerning sponsorship deals. McLaren however are not going for a ceremony this year, unlike last years spectical, instead going for a low key event at Jerez.

Ferrari have announced a 'completely new' car for the new season, despite strict rulings on the amount of changes that can be made per season. The team have announced new aero improvements, including a new front, different sidepod shapes and a brand new wing. Component wise, the suspension and gearbox will be improved on the F2007. They have announced that January 6th will be the launch date - the first of all 11 teams.

Red Bull have stated it will debut their car in Jerez in the third week of January. The RB4, Christian Horner confirmed is an 'evolution not revolution' of the RB3. The team hope to improve on the reliability problems of last season, which focused mainly on the gearbox.

Of course, the main difference to all teams is the elimination of TC (Traction Control). Some drivers, like Jenson Button regard this as a good step, believing that it will show more driver skill, however, Felipe Massa believes that there will be more crashes, especially in wet conditions, as the cars are harder to control in slow corners.

This post gives www.FWon.co.uk a chance to announce it's Fantasy Formula 1 Game for the 2008 Season. The game will work completely differently that other systems on the Internet, allowing more user input and race-per-race changes.

More details to follow in January.

Heikki Kovalainen partners Lewis at McLaren

In an unexpected announcement, there will be two relatively new rookies racing for McLaren. After Alonso's signing to Renault and Flavio signing Nelson Piquet Jr, the team released their current two drivers, Giancarlo Fiscichella and Heikki Kovalainen.

Whilst McLaren's choices dwindled, it seems that the signing of Heikki Kovalainen will further improve the teams' chances of securing a driver and/or constructors championship next season.

While the odds seem to favour Ferrari, with last years World Champion Kimi Raikkonen and increasingly experienced Felipe Massa the choice of two 'new boys' in Hamilton and Kovalainen should provide exciting races next year.

Heikki's impressive second place in Fuji shows his potential, and proved his potential, picking up 30 points in his rookie season and finishing in the top 8 eleven times.

Next season should be even more action-packed that this season, and with the changes at Honda looking promising, the Renault / Alonso relationship reignited and the new McLaren lineup, with the first race in Melbourne, Australia commencing on March 16th.

A nice site to see, imagine the grip! Each team had 3 sets to play with, and they wont be using these until possibly 2009, but the drivers seemed to like the grip.
BBC did a fantastic job on Sundays Top Gear. With Richard Hammond testing the R25 and Lewis Hamilton doing the lap in 1.44.7, only .3 slower that The Stig; and Lewis' lap was in the wet, with a bit of oil.

Formula 1 Update

The testing in Barcelona begins for all teams, with some notable new faces to the track, and some old faces. Michael Schumacher returned to a Ferrari seat for the first time in 13 months and immediately stole the show by setting the fastest lap in testing.

Rumours are that Fernando Alonso will return back to Renault for the 2008 season. The World Championship title is still under dispute and it is still possible for Lewis Hamilton to become the youngest world champion in history, although almost all of the F1 community hope that the decsion does not change, even McLaren; Bernie Ecclestone has told the media that he will contemplate resigning from the sport if the decision does go the Brits way.

On track news, a deal has been struck to build an India Formula 1 track and to have an Indian F1 race in 2010 in New Delhi. This has no doubt been due to the fact of Vijay Mallya’s team, Force India coming into the fray and no doubt attracting millions more viewers to the sport.

New to the 2008 circuit is the Nighttime race in Sinapore. This should be an amazing event, and the timing is primarily for the Western audiences, but never the less an F1 car with headlights should look amazing.
