Curly Girl Method Only for Me!!

Hello everyone!

    I hope all is going well with you and your hair! Fyecurls has been struggling a little! (You like how I talked about myself in third person?)
     My hair has been dryer and frizzier than usual lately. It could be the cold, drying weather outside, but I dont think so. I'm not having it! If your hair is not acting right, dont keep doing the same thing, change up something! I have a Cassia treatment being mailed to me as we speak(more on this later), and I have decided to go strict CG Method (Curly Girl Method).
    This is a method created by Lorraine Massey and I've read her book and seen many curlies have great success at it. The CG Method is when you eliminate the use of silicones, sulfates, and other products that can block out moisture and dry out your hair. The only products that I was using faithfully that had 'cones were Herbal Essence Hello Hydration and Aussie Moist Conditioners. I loved these because of the slip they gave while detangling. But these conditioners will be easily replaced by Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner and Suave Naturals Conditioner. I only cowash(conditioner wash) now. No more shampooing. Conditioner can remove dirt and products from your hair as long as you arent using cones. If you want to give this a try, you must first clarify your hair to remove the cones that you may have in your hair to start with a clean slate. So one last use of a sulfate shampoo will work for this. Then stick to natural and silicone and sulfate free products to wash and style your hair. This is supposed to help your curls maintain ultimate moisture. I recommend Lorraine Massey's book Curly Girl:The Handbook for more in-depth info about this. But there are several YouTube videos and articles on naturallycurly.com as well as other sites.
     I am excited to see how my hair responds! You know I'll keep you posted!

Happy New Year! I hope all is well with everyone! I've been recovering from surgery on my ear so my fun with hair has been sidelined for a while. My hair is currently in two strand twists and chilling cozily under a satin bonnet. :-(
I miss her already and its only been 4 days. LOL. It'll probaby be a month before I get to play in my hair again. I'm doing well and am just checking in on you guys! Im always on Twitter (@Fyecurls) so follow me there if you please! Take care!

I thoroughly enjoyed my stretched out/blown-out/enlongated hair this past weekend! I swang it and swang it 'til it couldnt be swang no more! LOL! But I eventually found out that it's not all good all the time! I attended Race for the Cure Saturday with WOW Fitness LR (www.wow-fitness.com), and was getting it IN with our Zumba demo/motivation for the crowd! After it was over, I had more of a wavy afro than what you see above! I still worked it, but realized this style is more for colder/dry weather and not working out! So I'll stick with setting my twists on damp/wet hair for now. There is always the option of using silicones to seal them..hmmm. That could keep them from frizzing so easily. So I'll keep experimenting and let you guys know what I figure out! Hope you girls are enjoying your healthy hair journeys! Take care! xoxoxo

Sister Millie Gives Step by Step Instructions on her Signature Updo!

1. I wash my hair with Shea Moisture Shampoo (Walgreens or Target)

2. I condition my hair with Aussie Moist and then deep condition with Shea Moisture Purification Masque (the one in the jar with the black label) Rinse it all out completely

3. Next, I use Giovanni leave in or Paul Mitchell The Generic Leave in and detangle my hair section by section. Once a section is detangled, I put it in medium twists.

4. Now you are ready to start the updo! I start at the bottom of my hair. I make a part going straight across. Then I half that. I cornrow one braid to the middle and twist the ends. Then I do the same for the other side.

5. I continue this all the way to the top of my head where I want to stop and start single twists. Sometimes I single twists just the top/front. Sometimes I single twist one whole side

6. Once I finish my whole head, I get some bobby pins and pin the twisted ends of the cornrowed portion going upwards to where the single twists start I use the wide bobby pins (usually takes about 6-8 pins to secure).

And there you have it! The perfect and easy updo! Comment below if you have any questions!

Blown-out and Twisted Hair

Hello everyone! I hope you guys are enjoying your hair journey and have some cool things to share with me! :-)
As I stated in an earlier post, I have been really boring with my hair lately. I've mostly worn twists all summer. The upside to that is that my hair is growing like wildfire!! The protectiveness of twists and moisturizing daily has really given my hair a boost! Today I treated myself to a blow-out (blow-dried my hair), and then twisted it up. What I did:
I washed, conditioned, and detangled my hair yesterday. I used SheaMoisture Sheabutter Leave-in conditioner (the original kind...found on amazon) to twist up my hair in medium twists. I wore them all night and all day today so they could dry. I took down one twist at a time, added some grapeseed oil (great natural heat protectant), and blew dry that section and twisted it back up. I did this for my entire head and was left with big chunky twists:

I could have worn these as is, or pinned them up for an elegant updo. I also could have worn them overnight to set, and untwisted in morning for a huge chunky twistout! But I wanted to be lazy for the rest of the week, so I twisted them into smaller twists using one of my homemade butter/oil concoctions. Result:

I know they dont look much smaller from the front. But the ones in the back are half the size. I then experimented a little....updo

Or you could stick with an easy, breezy ponytail:

For my nighttime routine, I took them out of the ponytail and slipped on a satin headwrap. And thats it! Let me know what you've been doing with your natural hair!!

Giovanni Direct Leave-in Weightless Moisture Conditioner: Review

Hey guys! Sorry I've been away. But I have been real boring lately with my hair. I've been rocking two strand twists during the week and twistouts on the weekends. I do pin them up sometimes or pull them in a ponytail or bun...but other than that, nothing! I moisturize my twists every other day with a 50/50 water and aloe vera juice mix, followed by either coconut oil or SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Masque to seal in the moisture. I then put on my satin bonnet or scarf and go to bed.
What I AM excited about is what I've been using as my leave-in conditioner/styler for my twists lately: Giovanni Direct Leave-in Conditioner. Its about $7 for 8 oz on the organic row in Walmart or Target. You can find it several other places as well. My hair drinks this stuff up! I apply it to very wet hair right after washing and detangle and twist my hair up. I love the way it moisturizes, foams up, detangles, and makes my ends curl easily at the ends of my twists! After twisting with this, I allow my hair to dry about 70-80% and then I squeeze in some moisturizer and a little oil. When it's time to twistout, my hair is shiny, bouncy, fluffy, and sooo soft!! Twists on Dry Stretched Hair Vs. Wet Using Banding Method

Hello everyone! I'm feeling my twists today because they are longer looking and fuller looking!! What i did:

I tried twists on dry stretched hair today unlike usual where I just twist right out of the shower on towel dried damp hair. I prepared my hair the night before by applying Knot Today Leave-in conditioner and then putting my hair in goody bands aka "Banding" Method. You may recall me talking about this months ago...Banding looks like this:

So I put my hair in bands, threw on a satin bonnet and went to bed as it dried. The next morning I took down one banded piece at a time and applied some Jane Carter Nourish and Shine butter and twisted all of my hair into small twists. I applied aloe vera gel and twisted most of my ends with it to curl them up the way I like. And this is the result:

*note my twists have a more elongated, fuller look than the set I did a couple of weeks ago*

Hope this was helpful to someone. Give it a try and let me know what you think! I will try this method again with my hair butter next time to see if I get similar results!

Homemade Hair Butter

Today I tried a homemade batch of hair butter to do my two strand twists. It turned out well. Nice shine, softness, and hold!

Just nuke butter only in the microwave for 30 seconds and add to mixture, then put all ingredients in a blender until creamy. Here's the recipe:

1.5 cups pure Shea Butter or Capuacu Butter (Ive used both)
1.5 cups Eco gel
1 cup Activator gel (I used Proclaim)
7 drops of tea tree oil (antibacterial for preservative)
2 tbs olive oil
2 tbs coconut oil
1 tbs honey

My sister is extremely talented when it comes to braiding/cornrowing, etc. She is who Fyecurls, her big sis (and dont you forget it Millie), turns to when I or my daughter needs our hair braided up cute! I have been working to get this blogspot page comparable if not better than my fyecurls.com page! So far I'd say it's been going pretty well. I'm having to retrain myself on blogspot applications. I'm currently working on properly connecting all the social sites: facebook, twitter, etc to this page. Yay! I also managed to do a head full of twists today! I hadn't used the Carol's Daughter Healthy Hair Butter in months and now I remember why I love it so! Shiny, moisturized, elongated twists! :-)

How I Wash My Daughter's Natural Hair

*I wash my daughter’s hair in 4 quadrants. I use ouchless ponytail holders to hold each section. I shampoo all four quadrants separately, making sure not to tangle the hair. I rinse then add conditioner and detangle using my wide tooth comb and Denman brush. I then rinse with cool water. (with all 4 quadrants still in ponytail holders). I Love Twist-Outs!

Ok so "wash n go's" are still my favorite, but "twists/twistouts" are a close runner up! To do this style, I washed my hair and then applied my GVP Paul Mitchell-The Conditioner throughout my hair. I then sectioned off my hair and applied Eco Styler gel (Olive oil kind) to a small section, brushed it through with my Denman brush, and twisted until I reached the ends. I then twirled the ends around my finger (this keeps the twists from unraveling). I do this to the entire head, and then let it air dry. I wear them for a about a week, and then gently untwist them...and voila...a "twist out!"
