LEGO® Based Therapy & LEGO® Brick Clubs

Brick clubs were designed to support children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We have innovated and created our own brick clubs for all ages, used in a wide range of our workshops and family learning to develop skills such as collaboration, communication, problem solving, innovation and symbolic thinking by learning through play.

Learners are encouraged to work together to build a range of LEGO® models, which helps to develop social skills, compromise and build friendships. Brick clubs are provided for groups, or individually, the goal is to provide an engaging and enjoyable experience, learning and developing skills while having fun.

LEGO® Education

We have worked in partnership with LEGO Education, Agored Cymru, the British Computer Society and other awarding bodies to develop a range of accredited programmes and multimedia resources in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) subject areas. Delivered STEAM workshops to Schools and Communities with Family Learning in fun and exciting ways, making it relevant to participants experience and expectations.

LEGO® Based Therapy

From 2019 we have been delivering LEGO® Based Therapy Courses suitable for use in a wide variety of educational, community and home education settings. Providing LEGO® based therapy training, workshops and support with our experienced staff at its Rhyl Centre or at locations throughout North Wales. LEGO® based therapy was designed to support children with ASD but can be used in a wide range of scenarios to help learn and develop skills such as collaboration, communication, problem solving and symbolic thinking by learning through play. G2G Communities CIC is the only LEGO® based therapy training course that has translated all the resource materials into Welsh ready to use to set up your own ‘Brick Club’.

Supporting Business

We provided a range of courses and activities to support local businesses and those considering setting up their own business. We have offered a range of accredited courses/qualifications and training at its centres in Rhyl and via its mobile services across North Wales. Delivered a range of bespoke courses, services, programmes and qualifications through its extensive partnerships with organisations such as LEGO, the British Computer Society (BCS), Agored Cymru, UK on-line, Reaching Wider Partnership, and the Virtual College. We provided mobile services across North Wales delivering equipment, resources and staff at times and locations to suit individual or organisational needs.

Recycling & Sustainable 3D Printing

Rhyl – A Better Life Project

Our goal is to reduce the amount of plastic being sent to landfill within the Rhyl and local district. We are working with schools, communities and businesses to collect discarded materials and provide a variety of educational ways that they can be re-used and recycled to reduce our waste sent to landfill.

Plastic Recycling

We provide a range of educational learning modules that you can mix and match for pupils/students to learn about 3D printing and plastic recycling, created and delivered by our experienced tutors. Our 3D Printing & Recycling Education module courses run over several weeks, some modules can be taken as a standalone workshop while others count as units towards formal qualifications.

Sustainable 3D Printing Centre

Inspiring 3D Makers at our Sustainable 3D Printing Centre, learners have been taught about 3D Printing, and putting their skills into practice, by designing and printing their own biodegradable models. We’ve been working with communities and businesses to create 3D prototypes and deliver environmentally friendly solutions and products.

Agored 3D Printing & Recycling Qualifications

G2G Communities CIC is the first organisation in Wales to offer Level 1 qualifications in 3D printing and Recycling. Two AGORED qualifications have been written by Dr William Lockitt (Director) and are now available on the AGORED/CQFW framework.

3D Printing Pens

We have been getting creative and running workshops, taking your ideas to the next level with our 3D Printing Pens (also a mobile service). Turning creativity into reality and drawing 3D objects from the ground up with ease and precision. Our workshops are tailored to requirements and outcomes.

SkillsCymru Llandudno 2019

Explored future skills and get work ready with careers, jobs, skills and apprenticeship events for Wales SkillsCymru provided hands-on activities and skills taster sessions, aiming to inspire and motivate visitors who are considering their future careers.

Free Research Papers

Dr William Lockitt has produced and published a range of free papers that can be downloaded from his website – williamlockitt.co.uk With over forty-five years’ experience in education find a range of publications highlighting the effective use of multimedia flexible and open learning, LEGO Education, learning through play, hydroponics and much more.

Local ‘Spotter Guides’

During 2019/20 G2G Communities CIC, supported by Rhyl Community Partnership and Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm, will be producing a range of free bilingual ‘spotter guides’ that can be downloaded and used to highlight some of the fantastic wildlife and community areas around Rhyl. The guides will be available from March 2020.

Working with Schools in North Wales

Rail Safety LEGO® Education

We had two great days with pupils, British Transport Police and Network Rail at Bodnant Community School highlighting possible dangers when crossing, or playing near, a railway line or at the station. Pupils had an input from the British Transport Police (btp.police.uk) and Network Rail (networkrail.co.uk), then were able to think about the dangers and recreate them in LEGO.

Hydroponics

Did you know we work with Schools and communities to provide bespoke Hydroponic Kits, services and workshops. We produce kits from discarded plastics and biodegradable 3D printed components.

Ysgol Christchurch CP – Supported by the North and Mid Wales Reaching Wider partnership and delivered by G2G Communities CIC sixty pupils from Christchurch CP School in Rhyl had the opportunity to make their own hydroponic containers from ‘one time use’ plastic bottles. They also learned about the importance of recycling and how using plastic that would normally be thrown away could be up-cycled and produce food in the form of salads, herbs etc.

Coding with Drones

Our drone workshops are perfect for Education. Designed to be fun and interactive, ideal for Key Stage 1-4 pupils. Learn how to program, control and fly using Scratch.

Family Learning

Parents and children work together during ‘Family Learning’ sessions to develop constructive play and a range of communication, numeracy, literacy and creativity skills.

Ysgol San Sior Llandudno

We had a great time visiting Ysgol San Sior to do deliver sessions with the pupils regarding hydroponics and also to deliver their desk based hydroponic systems.

Erasmus Event at G2G Communities CIC

Over sixty pupils and staff from Romania, France and North Wales Schools came to G2G Communities CIC. They produced short animations, programmed LEGO WeDo Robots with Scratch Coding.

After their visit to us they were all then taken to Conwy Castle where Callum, a member of our team gave them a tour of the Castle.

We have delivered LEGO® Brick Clubs for Rail Safety, building Castles for CADW and worked with Anwyl Construction to provide safety workshops throughout North Wales.

Brick Clubs Aims

The goal is to encourage learners to work together with fun and engaging activities. They can have different roles and outcomes, which encourages them to work together and improve social interaction and communication.

Typical roles are The Engineer who has instructions to build a model, they request bricks from The Supplier who supplies bricks on request to The Builder who is given instructions by The Engineer to build the model. Sometimes you’ll also need The Director, who makes sure the team is working well together and communicating.

Why LEGO® Based Therapy for Brick Clubs Was Created

LEGO® is extremely popular and recognised not only as a toy, but used to create art, therefore it provides simple, predictable and repeatable activities. Using LEGO® requires good motor skills and hand strength, using visual and analytical skills.

Most learners love LEGO®, so it’s a simple way to teach essential skills by learning through play. It’s built around existing, effective, risk-free therapies, which helps to build skills and possibly meaningful friendships built around common interests.

What we provide for the Brick Clubs

We provide professional experienced staff, with all the LEGO®, equipment and services. We work throughout North Wales, but happy to discuss if we can provide Brick Clubs at your location. Our LEGO® brick clubs and workshops are developed for adults, older pupils and children and we use a range of LEGO®, WeDo 1.0, WeDo 2.0, EV3 & NXT Robotics, Story Starter and Coding Resources, with the use of iPads to produce short animated movies.

Learn New Skills

You will be supported by a qualified tutor and have the opportunity to gain a number of qualifications. These include Emergency First Aid at Work (Level 3); European Driving Licence (Level 1 and 2); City and Guilds Food hygiene (level 2) and a range of other relevant training and qualifications. All volunteers will have a free DBS check and certificate.

SkillsCymru provided hands-on activities and skills taster sessions, aiming to inspire and motivate visitors who are considering their future careers. It took place at Venue Cymru, Llandudno, Wednesday 16 October 2019, 5pm–7pm and Thursday 17 October 2019, 9:30am–3pm. Exhibitors demonstrated careers in key growth sectors for Wales, as well as highlighting further education and training courses to boost the job prospects. As part of the ‘WCVA Landfill Project’ a desk based Hydroponic system, designed and built by G2G Communities CIC was delivered on Thursday 12th September, 2019 to Christchurch CP School, Rhyl.

During July 2019 G2G Communities CIC delivered to over one hundred and eighty pupils as part of a ‘Reaching Wider: North and Mid Wales Partnership’ project to highlight the need to recycle one-time use plastic and how these could be turned into simple Hydroponic (water only) systems to grow food.

During the delivery of the Reaching Wider project over one hundred Hydroponic systems were make and planted. During the project staff were asked how they felt about piloting a Hydroponic system and if so, what would they like it to look like and do.

As a result of the feedback a School based Hydroponic system was designed in consultation with Christchurch School and G2G management. Feedback highlighted that the system should be desk based and easy for staff and pupils to use.

Not only has the Hydroponic system been produced as part of these two initiatives G2G Communities CIC is also in the process of writing a series of learning resources that will support the introduction of Hydroponics into the curriculum to support Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM).

The G2G Strategic Policy Director, Dr William Lockitt said:

‘The support of the ‘Reaching Wider: North and Mid Wales Partnership’, the WCVA Landfill Project and Gwynt Y Mor has enabled G2G Communities CIC to develop resources and learning materials that highlight the need to recycle plastic and how they could be used to grow food without the use of soil’. ‘Thousands of adults and children have benefited from these projects and redirected plastic away from landfill’.

‘More free learning resources are being produced and will be available before the end of the year to Schools, home educators, community projects and anyone else interested in making positive changes to our environment.

We are the UK’s first community focused LEGO Education Innovation Studio based in Rhyl, North Wales. We work in partnership with LEGO Education, Agored Cymru, Learndirect and the British Computer Society to develop a range of accredited programmes and multimedia resources. We deliver training sessions in fun and exciting ways, which is an ideal way of improving skills in STEAM.

Scratch Coding & LEGO® Robotics

Learn how to use Scratch to create interactive stories, games, art, simulations and animations and share with others around the world and program our LEGO Robots. Our sessions introduce a range of LEGO robotics pupils can control using Scratch. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century.

LEGO® NXT & EV3 Robots

LEGO NXT & EV3’s enables students to build, program and test their solutions based on real life robotics technology. It will give students an introduction to programming, using structured programming sequences activities in real-world robotics. Our sessions will get students thinking about the patterns and structure of not just robotics, but also programming, problem solving, and team work to help build confidence.

LEGO® WeDo Robotics 1.0 & 2.0

WeDo is a fantastic introduction to control technology and programming using robotics with a simple-to-use tool that enables pupils to learn by constructing their own models and bringing them to life. WeDo ticks national curriculum boxes and comes with a cross-curricular plug ‘n’ teach curriculum pack that improves communication, collaboration and team-building skills.

WeDo helps teach how technology plays an active and informative role in the pupils’ learning and is an ideal product for teaching across different subjects, particularly literacy, science, maths, technology and engineering.

LEGO® Based Therapy

LEGO® based therapy is suitable for use in a wide variety of educational, community and home education settings, we provide LEGO® based therapy training, workshops and support with our experienced staff. We deliver tailored LEGO® based therapy workshops to all ages, with our experienced staff and provide a range of our LEGO® and digital equipment. Our educators one-day course will teach you all the skills and provide you with resources you need to deliver, manage and evaluate LEGO® based therapy.

LEGO® Story Starter

Students work together to create and build stories with LEGO bricks and figures, then use the unique Story Visualizer Software to visualise, write and communicate their work.

LEGO Story Starter is the helping hand that kick-starts pupil’s creativity and boosts their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills at Key Stages 1 and 2.

LEGO® MoreToMath

LEGO® MoreToMath provides the tools for young pupils to make abstract maths more tangible. Throughout the activities, pupils use LEGO bricks to model solutions which help them to understand and apply mathematical practices, such as making sense of problems and persevering in solving them, reasoning abstractly and quantitatively, constructing viable arguments and attending to precision.

Scratch

Scratch is designed to be fun, educational, and easy to learn. Millions of people are creating Scratch projects in a wide variety of settings, including homes, schools, museums, libraries, and community centres.

The ability to code computer programs is an important part of literacy in today’s society. When people learn to code in Scratch, they learn important strategies for solving problems, designing projects, and communicating ideas.

Minecraft Education – Engage Students in Fun New Ways

Minecraft Education promotes collaboration, and problem-solving in an immersive environment. Teaching essential subjects as Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) can be hard to keep everyone interested and engaged. But when you add some fun into your subject in an intuitive way, you’ll see some great results.

One to One Support

We provide one to one support sessions with our friendly experienced staff, tailor the session to your learners specific needs, a great way to improve their skills in a safe environment. FIRST AID COURSES

We are a registered Qualsafe Awards Registered Centre (No. 0905755). The Qualsafe Awards (QA) is an Ofqual recognised awarding organisation, established by experts in the first aid training industry. First Aid courses can be delivered to suit your individual requirements in house or at our learning centre at the Bee & Station Business Centre in Rhyl.

QA Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (QCF)

This 2-day paediatric first aid course is designed for professional child carers, childminders, nannies, crèche leaders, early year schoolteachers, nursery nurses, sport or leisure staff, parents, or for anyone that intends to work in a childcare environment, this course meets Ofsted standards.

QA Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (QCF)

The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course is ideal for anyone such as parents, grandparents, babysitters, childcare assistants, that has an interest in child and infant basic life support. The course will give you basic life-support skills and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, to enable you to deal with children’s life-threatening emergencies.

Emergency First Aid (1 Day)

This course will give people the skills and knowledge to provide emergency First Aid for treatment to casualties in a prompt, safe and effective manner. The Emergency First Aid at Work course will help you meet your legal requirements to provide first aid in the workplace as well as being a valuable life skill.

Annual First Aid Refresher Course

The course is designed for anyone who has previously completed either the First Aid at Work, or the Emergency First Aid at Work course, which will help you refresh your skills. This First Aid Refresher course builds on your expertise and confidence by involving you in realistic situations with simulated casualties. You will practise your first aid skills with hands-on scenarios.

The British Science Association’s flagship programme for young people, providing science enrichment activities to inspire and engage 5-19-year olds. CREST is a scheme that inspires young people to think and behave like scientists and engineers.

A consistent and high standard of assessment and moderation is achieved for the scheme via our network of industry experts from the STEM and education sectors. It has been running since 1986 and sees tens of thousands of young people taking part each year.

Our goal is to reduce the amount of plastic being sent to landfill within the Rhyl and local district. We are working with schools, communities and businesses to collect discarded materials and provide a variety of educational ways that they can be re-used and recycled to reduce our waste sent to landfill.

We are working with Christchurch CP School, Ysgol Llywelyn, Bryn Tirion Hall School, Surfers Against Sewage, Rhyl Botanical Gardens who are collecting plastic and have created a mini-recycling unit – thank you for taking part in the project and helping to reduce waste. We are using discarded plastics for sustainable hydroponics and shredding the plastics into flakes which will be re-used to make new practical plastic products. We are developing innovations and solutions to help turn discarded plastic into a precious resource!

G2G Hydroponics with sustainable 3D printing and precious plastics.

We are working with schools and communities to re-use discarded plastics, biodegradable 3D printed parts, and other materials freely available to set-up Hydroponic systems to let you grow your own plants.

Using Hydroponics allows you to grow all year round, it conserves water and plant nutrients are controlled, it’s a great space saver for growing lots of plants, they grow quicker and in higher yields all year round and there is no need for weeding.

We are producing a range of learning resources to go with the sustainable Hydroponic systems, how to build them using sustainable materials, best practices and much more, which will be available for free on our e-learning platform later this year.

Communities coming together to pick-up litter and precious plastics.

More than 110 volunteers have been hard at work over Easter keeping Rhyl’s waterfront clean. Working with G2G Communities on Saturday, April 13, 56 volunteers cleared more than 100 cans and plastic bottles – which have now been recycled – as part of 80kgs worth of waste from around Crazy Golf on the West Parade.

Rhyl – A Better Life Project (Recycling Helps You Live – A Better Life)

Pupils had an input from the British Transport Police (btp.police.uk) and Network Rail (networkrail.co.uk), then were able to think about the dangers and recreate them in LEGO. Pupils then made animated videos showing various situations. Considering that the majority of pupils had not made animated videos before the ones they produced were outstanding. The feedback from the pupils was extremely positive and they said that they knew a lot more about the dangers and how to avoid them.

A big thank you to the School and the pupils for making the day so enjoyable. Also thank you to Network Rail and the British Transport Police for funding the pilot project and their support.

Summary

Play as an activity for learning is often dismissed as an active part of the learning process. If you ask a child how they learned to do something such as use a mobile phone, record their favourite programme or play on their games machine most children would be unable to tell you. If you dig a little deeper and ask them if someone taught them to do it most children will say no. So how did they learn how to do it?

Children are really good at observation, imitation and play. They see something they want to do and then experiment through playing with it until they get the desired outcome.

What can play achieve:

1. Play activities can prepare children to cope with scenarios the will encounter in ‘real life’;
2. Roll play can help children to develop strategies they can use to make friends or build relationships in the future;
3. Abstract concepts can be developed and refined without the fear of making mistakes;
4. Children learn to be responsible for their actions and can practice modifying their behaviour until the desired outcome is achieved;
5. Positive feedback from adults and peers can reinforce behaviour;
6. Play can be spontaneous or planned but given the right conditions and resources all forms of play can stimulate a child’s imagination and creativity.

Two AGORED qualifications have been written by Dr William Lockitt (Director) and are now available on the AGORED/CQFW framework.

Moira Lockitt (Director) said:

‘With the support of the Gwynt y Môr Community Fund G2G Communities CIC was able to develop two new qualifications to ensure that not only did pupils and adults experience 3D Printing and Recycling at the centre in Rhyl but they also gained a recognised qualification’.

‘Although G2G Communities CIC produced the qualifications they are available on the AGORED/CQFW framework for any organisation to download and deliver’.

‘The qualifications have proved very successful and we anticipate an increase in the number delivered during 2018/19’.

Dr William Lockitt (Director) said:

‘It seemed a pity that pupils and adults were undertaking the 3D printing and Recycling training at G2G Communities CIC but there was no recognised qualification to support it’. ‘I contacted AGORED and they were extremely positive and supportive’.

‘AGORED qualifications are recognised by industry and education so the pupils and adults gaining them will be able to take advantage in what is becoming a growth industry’.

‘The recycling of plastic waste in particular is an industry set for expansion in the future and our learners will be able to take advantage of the employment opportunities associated with it’.

During the visit Ms Williams had the opportunity to talk to pupils from Christchurch CP School and Prestatyn High School about their experiences of using LEGO Education resources at G2G to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM).

Ms Williams also visited the 3D printing and recycling centre that has been set up at G2G to highlight future employment opportunities and the social/environmental benefits of recycling. G2G Communities CIC has produced two new level 1 qualifications that are now on the AGORED framework: ‘Introduction to 3D printing’ and ‘Introduction to plastic recycling’. G2G is pleased to have been the first organisation in Wales to offer these qualifications. Twelve pupils and adults passed the qualifications during the pilot stage and they are now being rolled out to Schools and communities across North Wales.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education said:

“Thank you for welcoming me to G2G to hear from the students about how they’ve been using these resources to get interested in STEAM subjects. We want to promote these subjects and we need to make sure we find new and interesting ways, such as this, to get students engaged. A big thank you to everyone who’s been working hard to support this project.”

‘We are extremely pleased that the Cabinet Secretary for Education arranged to visit and had the opportunity to talk to organisations that have supported G2G during the past eight years’. The ‘hands on’ approach to delivering the STEAM curriculum has proved very successful and encouraged pupils to reengage with education in Schools, College and work placements’.

Dr William Lockitt (Director) said:

‘Where possible we have been able to map the LEGO STEAM activities delivered by G2G Communities CIC to the ‘Digital Competence Framework’ in order to develop digital skills that can be applied to a wide range of subjects and scenarios to ensure our young people have the necessary skills and competences to succeed in an ever-increasing digital World’.

4 Years in the Bee & Station Business Centre

Local philanthropic entrepreneurs Moira and William Lockitt give over £200,000 back to the local community in the past three years. Humble Beginnings, G2G Communities CIC was Founded in March, 2010 by Moira and Bill Lockitt decided to use their skills and experience in compulsory and further education as they wanted to support their local community.

Crest Award Centre

Supporting the Community

Santander Foundation Award – We would like to thank the Santander Foundation for their Discovery Grant award. The grant will be used to provide inter-generational IT/computer skills workshops focused on money management and online safety to parents/guardians/grand parents and children in some of the highest areas of deprivation in Wales.

OPUS Project – We worked with adult learners with the Learn My Way web site to give them access to a City and Guilds qualification with our one to one Support to help improve and develop essential skills.

‘Fresh Start’ Course Funded by Gwynt y Môr – We delivered a project for Gwynt y Môr to support eight people furthest away from employment to gain experience and qualifications relevant to local employment opportunities, the participants achieved City and Guilds and British Computer Society IT qualification’s.

Gwynt y Môr Community Fund – Programme of activities to get people back into employment, full or part time education, training and giving them the skills for life-long learning.

We worked with Gwynt y Môr to support 10 local coastal businesses to help them become a bigger success, with our web design services we created websites to help launch their businesses online! Schools & Education

Wicked Wales Animation – Pupils from Christchurch CP School in Rhyl had a wicked time battling Witches and other demons, making their own stories come to life with LEGO and the iPad.

Rhyl High School Celebrate Success – For several weeks a group of Rhyl High School pupils attended our learning centre to pilot the delivery of alternative curriculum activities to pupils and gain industry recognised qualifications, these include; City and Guilds; British Computer Society and Agored Cymru OCC’s.

Reaching Wider Partnership – Parents and children from Schools in North Wales enjoyed visits to Conwy, Denbigh and Caernarfon Castles during May to July 2017. The project has been funded by the North and Mid Wales and North East Wales ‘Reaching Wider’ partnership. The Schools taking part in the programme are Ysgol Merllyn; Ysgol Gwynedd; ID Hooson; Ysgol Cystemnin; Ysgol Glanwydden; Ysgol Maesincla.

Exploring Historic Heritage with Cadw & Welsh Government – We worked with Schools across North Wales to provide castle tours and exciting activities. Primary school pupils have visited the castles of King Edward I, namely Conwy, Caernarfon, Rhuddlan and Denbigh, and had the opportunity to create these out of LEGO Education while learning about life inside a 13th century castle.

Llandudno Church Project – We worked with St Pauls Church, children and staff from Springfield Day Nursery in Llandudno to recreate the story of Noha’s Ark in song and animation, the children made several animated video’s using LEGO moviemaker and iPads.

A big thank you to Flintshire County Council for once again organising this fantastic event and attracting several thousand people to the Big Bang venue. Developed and managed by practitioners, ASDAN grew out of research work at the University of the West of England in the 1980s and was formally established as an educational charity in 1991.

ASDAN’s Purpose

ASDAN’s charitable purpose is: “The advancement of education, by providing opportunities for all learners to develop their personal and social attributes and levels of achievement through ASDAN awards and resources, and the relief of poverty, where poverty inhibits such opportunities for learners.” A charitable fund offering grants is in place to support ‘the relief of poverty’.

Today ASDAN provides support to thousands of registered centres throughout the UK and in other countries, publishes more than 200 resource titles, supervises the moderation procedures for all its courses, and develops new curriculum programmes, resources and qualifications in response to the needs of the profession.

G2G Communities CIC Organised Seaside Walk for BBC Children in Need, 3.7 miles

On Sunday 15th October we are organising a 3.7 mile walk from Rhyl Harbour starting at 1pm to Prestatyn Ffrith Beach as part of the Countryfile Seaside Ramble for Children in Need. Suggested Donation is £5.00 per person, maximum of 10 people per booking please. Donations will be collected on the day, sign-up and join us for a good cause.

The Seaside Route

Starting next to the Harbour Café/Pont y Ddraig Harbour Bridge at 1pm (click for map). Finishing at Prestatyn, Ffrith Beach (click for map). You can catch a bus back to Rhyl which run regularly or it’s an extra 1 mile to Prestatyn Train Station.

Calling All Pokémon Trainers

This is a great opportunity to come and meet your fellow trainers! Hatch lots of your eggs on the walk, use an incense to spawn extra Pokémon and we usually always have lots of great spawns along the seaside. Want to really get into the spirit? Why not come dressed up or wear your teams colours.

For every person in fancy dress we will make an extra donation to Children in Need.

The funding will help to do some of the following:

• Awareness raising sessions in Schools and local communities.
• Assist in training and development of individual and groups regarding 3D printing and plastic recycling.
• Assist in the implementation of a plastic recycling centre within the 3D studio.
• Assist in the development of a community 3D printing centre.

Director Moira Lockitt said ‘We are extremely pleased to receive the grant from the GREGGS foundation to assist in the development of the 3D printing and recycling centre in Rhyl’. ‘G2G Communities CIC has committed funding to kick start the project and this grant will help toward the implementation of some of the planned activities’. ‘We continue to look for funding opportunities and sponsorship to carry the project forward during 2017/18’.

The GREGGS environmental grants programme aims to improve people’s lives by improving the environment. The programme is administered by seven charity committees throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Organisations may only apply once per calendar year for this grant.

This year for the first time STEM Learning joined the STEM Ambassador Hub Wales Awards with the Enthuse Awards event for teacher CPD. Techniquest as STEM Learning partners run the CPD courses for teachers in Wales and the event was kindly hosted at the Senedd under the invitation of WG Secretary for Education Kirsty Williams AM.

It is never easy to select STEM Ambassadors for awards as all deserve merit for their loyalty to the programme. The list of nominated Ambassadors is not limited to the following names. However we welcomed special commendation as below. A sociable event was attended by 30 Ambassadors and teachers awarded for Enthuse in Wales and the West Country.

Dr Lockitt said ‘I am extremely pleased that the work undertaken by G2G Communities CIC throughout North Wales has been recognized’. ‘We have a team of dedicated staff working on a number of innovative projects to highlight the opportunities of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM), not just in North Wales but World Wide’. Working with a wide range of partners G2G Communities CIC will continue to push the boundaries of STEAM in some of the areas of highest deprivation in Wales’.

‘Due to the fact that G2G Communities CIC is a not for profit organisation and does not receive any Government or other state funding it is pleasing to note that it has given over £200,000 back to the local communities of North Wales during the past three-years’. ‘I hope that with the support of our partners and local business/industry we can continue to support local projects and people in North Wales’.

Humble Beginnings, G2G Communities CIC was Founded in March, 2010

Moira and Bill Lockitt decided to use their skills and experience in compulsory and further education as they wanted to support their local community. In March 2010, they set up a not for profit training organisation called G2G Communities CIC and started to deliver training from a single unit in the old Stamp factory in Marsh Road in 2011. Within three months they had to rent another unit due to the number of people accessing their provision. G2G receives no government or other state funding. Funding for all delivery is by competitive tendering and subject to exacting targets and quality provision.

UK’s First Community LEGO Education Innovation Centre

After undertaking research for the Open University regarding LEGO Education in 2012 Dr Lockitt contacted LEGO to see if we could become a LEGO Education Innovation Studio. The concept was accepted and G2G became the first community focused LEGO Education Innovation Studio in the UK.

Relocate to Bee & Station Business Centre in July 2013

Due to expansion G2G moved into two units in the Bee and Station Business Centre in the heart of Rhyl. It was then necessary to take on two additional units on the first floor to accommodate the LEGO STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) activities and ten WCVA Gateway and three Department for Works and Pensions projects. During 2016/17 a further two units have been taken on and G2G now occupy the entire 6 units in the building, one of the new units will be a Sustainable 3D Printing Centre and an experimental plastic recycling centre, due to be launched in September 2017.

The Bee and Station Hotel was built in the 1860s, listed in 1991 as an excellent example of a late 19th century pub, it closed in 2005 re-opening in 2013 after being refurbished by Denbighshire County Council

Out of this World! with UK Space Agency

G2G was extremely pleased to be selected as one of the eight organisations across the UK to be awarded one of the exciting new education and outreach activities projects funded by the UK Space Agency. The projects represent a diverse selection of cross-curricular activities that meet all of the UK Space Agency objectives in encouraging children to take up STEAM subjects, raise awareness of careers in space-related areas, and raise awareness of the UK’s exploration programme.

Until March, 2018 G2G are visiting Schools in and around North Wales to deliver enrichment activities as part of the Welsh Governments/National Science Academy ‘All SySTEMs Go’ Project. Using our LEGO Education and other resources we will be providing Key stage 2 and 3 students and teachers the opportunities to build robots, learn programming and explore the careers available in the Space Sector.

G2G Communities CIC is also supporting the bid made by Aerospace Wales chief executive John Whalley for a space port at Llanbedr airfield in Gwynedd. The project will attract significant investment and secure a wide range of employment opportunities throughout North Wales.

Supporting Local Businesses & the Community

Providing courses, training, mobile services & equipment, offering a large range of bespoke courses, services, programmes and qualifications through our extensive partnerships. We also provide mobile services across North Wales delivering equipment, resources and staff at times and locations to suit organisational needs.

G2G with the support of the Gwynt y Môr Community Fund, started a new programme of activities in September 2016 which will run for 12 months. During the programme G2G will support individuals furthest away from employment across Flintshire, Denbighshire and Conwy. Ten virtual business start-ups have been supported and their business websites launched and a number of individuals and groups have benefited from the Gwynt y Môr Community Fund.

Sustainable 3D Printing & Plastic Recycling Centre

G2G Communities CIC is working towards creating a Sustainable 3D Printing & Plastic Recycling Centre based at the Bee and Station and a Mobile 3D Printing Studio we can transport around North Wales.

Mark Lockitt who is managing the project said ‘Our goal is to provide educational sustainable 3D printing workshops throughout North Wales, and to provide a 3D printing centre for the benefit of the community and businesses. Our workshops are ideal for all ages and abilities, learn to design and print your very own 3D model. We aim to have the 3D printing suite set up and working very soon and the plastic recycling centre set-up will follow soon after, where we can recycle plastic to produce our own filament’.

We hope to build a range of recognised qualifications and awards around the 3D printing, design and plastic recycling and these will be launched shortly after the opening of the centre.

8,300 million tonnes of virgin plastics have been produced. Half of this material was made in just the past 13 years. About 30% of the historic production remains in use today. Of the discarded plastic, roughly 9% has been recycled. Some 12% has been incinerated, but 79% has gone to landfill. Current trends point to 12 billion tonnes of waste by 2050. 3D Printing Register for Workshops

Crest Award Centre

G2G Communities CIC is now a CREST Award Centre and will be rolling out a complete suite of awards in October 2017, including: Discovery, Bronze, Silver and Gold. All of the awards will be offered to Home Educators and Schools and other organisations supporting 5 to 19 year olds.

In the 30 years that CREST Awards have been running, they have learnt a lot about the benefits they offer – to teachers, technicians, STEM Ambassadors, parents and home educators, as well as to students.

• Improved GCSE grades and increased interest in continuing in STEM education and careers
• A sense of achievement for students of all ages and abilities
• Real-life experience of ‘being’ a scientist and working on STEM projects
• Students can use CREST to enhance their UCAS personal statements – our scheme is well-regarded by universities
• Extra value from other activities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, STEM Clubs, Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the Children’s University Passport to Learning

Prince’s Trust Achieve Programme

In 2016 the Prince’s Trust launched a new programme designed to support young people who are at risk of underachieving at school or college to engage with and succeed in education.

The Achieve programme is a flexible provision for 11-19 year olds who are experiencing challenges with attendance, attainment or motivation and may be at risk of exclusion or not attaining the grades they are capable of.

The need for alternative curriculum offerings like Achieve remains clear, with a third of school-leavers still not achieving five A*-C grade GCSEs and more than half of young people in Scotland not achieving 5 National Fives. The situation is even worse for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are far more likely to fail to achieve at these levels than their peers.

The new Achieve programme is designed to help disadvantaged young people who are struggling to develop important character skills through relevant, engaging and informal learning. It will connect young people with the world of work and equip them with the transferrable skills and knowledge they need to succeed, focusing particularly on literacy, language and numeracy (LLN) and science, technology, engineering, art and maths (STEAM).

Discovery Space

Highlights included the Discover Space Zone, where members of the public could see outreach programmes from across the UK. This ran from the 31st of May till the 1st of June, sponsored by the Open University, who also ran a stall highlighting courses people can take to learn more about our solar system, planets and the universe around us.

Activities at the Discover Space zone included Rocket Launching, trying to find landmarks on Earth while on the ISS with EO Detective, programming with the Astro Pi, triathlon trusts Space to Earth Challenge and a Mars rover maze with the National Space Centre.

Stalls

Many organisations had stalls at the event. Large companies like Airbus and

as well as areas of the UK including Scotland, Cornwall, Northern Ireland and Wales who were promoting companies from their region and their bids for hosting UK space ports. Including Aerospace Wales promoting the Llanbedr space port in North Wales.

Smaller companies, Universities and Outreach organisations also had stands, such as the European Space Agency with Astro Pi  and UBO a working pico sat for classrooms.

Talks

David Parker, Director of Human Spaceflight and Robotic Exploration at the European Space Agency, spoke about E3P which lays out Europe’s plans for Human and Robotic Space Exploration. These include the future of the International Space Station, Moon and Mars rovers and a Spacecraft capable of maintaining a human presence away from the Earth.

Tim Peake, ESA Astronaut at the European Space Agency, spoke during the final plenary about his experiences on the ISS, how precious life on Earth is and how you cannot see any human activity from space during the day. He also briefly talked about what he hopes the UK future of Space exploration will be and his future as an astronaut.

Mikes’s web site (potterconstruction.co.uk) has been designed to Mike’s specification after an initial meeting agreeing on the branding and the required content of the site.

Mike already has a good awareness of Social Media and is active on Facebook (facebook.com/PrestatynBuilders) promoting his latest jobs and work in progress. We’ve designed a website that reflects information and details of his latest jobs with gallery’s and text where he can give more detail of the services and jobs that he provides.

The final event for the G2G Communities CIC and UK Space Agency programme (Full STEAM Ahead) was held on Friday 10th March 2017 at the OpTic Technology Centre in St Asaph. Over 120 pupils, teachers and speakers from across North Wales attended the event.

Pupils were able to talk to key people involved in the UK and Wales Space programme, and have hands on experiences in the exhibition ‘Street’. The event was funded by G2G Communities CIC as part of its UK Space Agency programme.

G2G Director Dr William Lockitt addressed the conference and thanked the UK Space Agency for giving G2G the funding and the opportunity to deliver this programme. He said ‘The programme has been very successful and reached hundreds of people across North Wales’. ‘It has raised the awareness of people to the opportunities Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) will bring in the future, in particular, within the Space industry’. ‘In the not too distant future the Welsh Space industry will be worth billions and employ thousands of people within a wide spectrum of employment’. ‘The time to instil an interest in STEAM is when our children are young and receptive to new ideas and ways of thinking’. ‘This programme has enabled G2G to start the process and we hope to take this forward in the future’.

The RSA mission is to create the conditions for the enlightened thinking and collaborative action needed to address today’s most pressing social challenges.

They serve this mission by acting as a global hub, by enabling millions of people to access the most creative ideas, by nurturing networks of innovators, and through researching, testing and sharing practical interventions.

Dr Lockitt said ‘The mission of the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) is to enrich society through ideas and action’. ‘This fits in well with the aims and objectives of G2G Communities CIC as a not for profit, community focused organisation delivering to Schools, Libraries, local government organisations and those furthest away from employment in some of the highest areas of deprivation in Wales’.

G2G Communities CIC receives no Government or any other state/public funding and relies on winning project funding within a competitive tendering process. Dr Lockitt said ‘Since starting G2G in 2010 and becoming a LEGO Education Innovation Studio in 2011 we have supported over 60,000 people and organisation throughout North Wales. In the past two years we have reinvested over £140,000 back into communities throughout north Wales by supporting individuals to set up their own businesses, offering a range of free courses/qualifications, volunteer time and a range of free activities in Schools and local community venues’. ‘We are currently running two Space programmes ‘All SySTEMs Go’ and ‘Full STEAM Ahead’ supported by the National Science academy (Welsh Government) and the UK Space Agency’. ‘Both programmes highlight the growing potential of the Space industry and opportunities open to people in North Wales’.

Shabby Pats came to us as part of the Gwynt y Môr to ask for a website to be designed allowing the advertising and display of the works of Alison, a local furniture maker and restorer. Alison’s start-up business is creating unique items of upcycled furniture and gifts as well as antiques. Her workshop is based in Ffynnongroew where she makes the furniture as well as houses a showroom that is full of her creations.

G2G Communities were pleased to be asked to have an exhibition stand at the opening of the Space Incubation Units at OpTic St Asaph on Tuesday 6th July.

The incubation units are designed for young technology businesses with high growth potential, the OpTIC incubation centre offers a fully serviced high quality space at an all-inclusive price. Uniquely, tenants are supported to achieve their potential through a tailored programme of business, technical and financial mentoring.

Over seventy people attended the opening and the event attracted a number of high quality speakers, including: Caroline Gray Director, OpTIC Technology Centre, Glyndŵr University; Helen Roberts/Colin Baldwin UK Space Agency; Chris Atherton Chair of the Northern Space Consortium and John Whalley, Chief Executive Aerospace Wales Forum.

Our LEGO Robots attracted a number of visitors to our exhibition stand including ITV broadcasting. They videoed the robots in action and interviewed Moira Lockitt (Director) about the work of G2G and the role of LEGO as an educational resource.

Moira said ‘Using the LEGO robots with young children makes them realise that Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) can be fun, exciting and provide quality employment in the future’. ‘At G2G we use LEGO for all sorts of STEAM education and training with children, young and older adults’. ‘The growth of Space related industry in Wales in the next ten years will be worth billions to our economy and It’s really rewarding for us to think that G2G has played a small part in this and one day we may find that we helped to develop another person that will follow the footsteps of Tim Peake into Space’.

After a lot of deliberation, we tallied the votes from staff and our partners, and the final winner was chosen. It has links to Tim Peake and Principia with the use of the famous Newton’s Apple, it has a LEGO Earth, as well as the Welsh dragon peaking over a spaceship in orbit.

Well done to Pown Hughes (aged 10) from Ysgol Llywelyn who has won the logo design competition (check out Pown’s entry below). Pown has won a full day of Space themed LEGO Education activities for her and her School. Pown’s logo is now the official All SySTEMs Go project logo and will feature on the All SySTEMs Go materials and publicity.

The All SySTEMs Go Logo Competition launched on the 2nd of February 2016 and closed on the 13th May. The competition was open to children aged 7-14 (key stage 2 and 3), it was to design a logo that incorporated the project name ‘All SySTEMs Go’, for use with the project.

The G2G Communities CIC ‘All SySTEMs Go’ project, supported by the National Science Academy (NSA) and Welsh Government, will run between January 2016 and March 2018. It will use LEGO Education robotics and other resources to highlight the potential of STEAM related education, training and employment with regard to the new opportunities expected as part of the Welsh Space Strategy.

We host a variety of workshops and courses, so it should be of no surprise that Stefano has been involved in a variety of work whilst he’s been with us; from programming using Raspberry Pi and Micro:Bit , to Green Screen training, to Lego Workshops and Animation and visiting the stunning Conwy Castle with the local school children in the Reaching Wider Partnership.

Stefano is having an enjoyable and insightful stay with us, everything we do is full of variety unlike any other work experience Stefano has done before. He is currently in his fourth year of high school, studying towards his degree in Information Technology.

With support from the North and Mid Wales Reaching Wider Partnership G2G Communities CIC is providing high quality indoor/outdoor experiences to a total of 61 pupils from Key Stage 2 in Flintshire, Denbighshire and Conwy visiting Conwy Castle and producing multimedia animated video’s and exploring medieval castles using Minecraft Education.

During the programme of activities pupils had the opportunity to undertake the following:

• One-day visit to Conwy Castle with a professional guided tour
• Completion of a quiz and questionnaire during the day of the visit
• During the second session build Castles out of LEGO and build in defences and attack strategies
• During the third session develop a theme or story about Castles and using iPads produce animated video’s
• During the fourth session use LEGO Storystarter and or LEGO WeDo robotics to reproduce historic battles and machines
• During the last session children created virtual worlds around Castles in Minecraft Education

A celebration and certification activity took place during the last 20 minutes of the final session

The Cloud 9 Initiative Project was developed to achieve the following objectives:

• To ensure that children and families with greatest need have access to computers and the Internet at home, by providing access to computers/tablets to families on low incomes as well as the skills to use them
• Increase attainment levels for children at school, by encouraging families to use computers and the Internet to complete classwork & homework
• Introduce Families to low rate loans and savings accounts, highlighting additional benefits associated with credit unions
• Assist children to become Digital Hero’s
• Up-skill parents/guardians who currently have limited digital skills, removing barriers which have the potential to limit social and economic progress
• Foster greater communications and engagement between parents/guardians and the schools
• Highlight the social and economic benefits of the Internet to parents and families

The Cloud 9 initiative comprises of five partners:

• DCW – The local coordinator developed the project in N Wales, secured the commitment form partner organisations, levied in funding, and coordinated delivery of the imitative.
• North Denbighshire Communities First Cluster (NDCFC) – The team funded the training provision for the six week course as well as provided communication links to other partners and assistance with delivery coordination.
• For The Community (4TC) a social enterprise, specialising in community broadband and the refurbishment of computer equipment for resale – 4TC refurbished and donated 15 laptops, provided and installed the latest MS software on each, and funded the MiFi data access.
• G2G provide the trainers; training materials (based on the requirements of the partners) and deliver the training.
• Christchurch CP School, Rhyl – the school marketed the initiative amongst the year 3 & 4 families, promoted the sessions and provided a location for the training delivery to take place in school time.

Moira Lockitt Director of G2G said ‘G2G Communities CIC has been delivering the New Skills & New Life programme on behalf of the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) for the past two years and helped over 100 people furthest away from employment to improve their qualifications, skills and employment prospects’. ‘The feedback from participants and the DWP has been excellent and we are very pleased that a number of participants have obtained full or part-time employment or moved on to further their education and training’.

Looking the Part for Tim Peake Return

First you will need a Space Suit. Astronauts wear a number of different suits for different jobs, find out about the Sokol Space Suit with these handy videos.

Here’s a guide from Destination Space to build your own Space Suit.

You should end up with something a bit like this, the Space Suits used by Apollo 11 Astronauts. Don’t worry if it isn’t exactly the same as you will not be wearing your suit on the Moon.

Adding Mission Patches

Mission Patches have lots of different meanings and make Astronauts feel part of a select team, here are some of Tim Peakes and what they all mean.

Space Themed Food Ideas

In Space you need to be careful not to eat anything too messy as crumbs would be free to float around and get into machinery or breathed in by Astronauts causing health issues. Food also needs to be pre-packed into a rocket and launched to the ISS. You can use cooking to learn about Space and life on the ISS using resources or make fun food inspired by Space. Space Decoration Ideas

Make your party look the part with your own model satellites, rockets and planets to make and colour in to hang around your house, school or event location. Check out these links to get some great suggestions.

Space Themed Activity Ideas

Learn with Space with resources from ESERO and STEM UK, simply make an account and download the resources. These are aimed at 7 – 15 year olds but are suitable for anyone with an interest, simply pick the activities that are suitable for your event and guests. Other resources are available from NASA, ESA and others.

Also look out for events around the UK such as this one at the National Space Centre in Leicester.
