  <h1>Paleo Rosemary Shiitake Mushroom Stuffing</h1><p class="">It's a beautiful twist on a traditional dish. </p><p class="">Traditions are important, and our gut health is equally important. Learning to make delicious foods that nourish both body and soul is the key to a lasting lifestyle of vibrant health. </p><p class="">Thanksgiving is no exception. </p><p class="">I never liked eating turkey, even as a kid. I LOVED eating the stuffing, the mashed potatoes, and the black olives my sweet Mimi would place on the table. I would get so full as a kid eating the olives that my grandmother (Mimi) would get frustrated. She would strategically place them along our long Thanksgiving table, and I would wait until she was finished and then go and sit at each bowl.  She would, of course, shew me away and giggle as she had to refill the olive dishes. One year, she took a can, put the whole thing in a bowl, and gave it to me to eat. I left the table alone that year and waited to eat with everyone else. </p><p class="">While times have changed, some traditions have not. </p><p class="">I still don’t like eating turkey, so my table will be free of that beautiful iconic bird as the centerpiece, and instead, my famous cacao tart will be at the center.   <p class=""><strong>Directions:</strong></p><p class="">The first step is to cube the AWG Bakery Rosemary Loaf. Make sure they’re a good size but not too big. </p><p class="">Toss them in a very light coating of melted coconut oil and bake at 350 degrees until golden brown. </p><p class=""><strong><em>While the bread cubes are baking</em></strong> … sautee the shiitake mushrooms with onions, celery, garlic, and EV coconut oil or ghee. Feel free to add your spices here, including salt. </p><p class="">Once the bread is finished toasting, get your casserole dish and mix the bread, sauteed mix, and add the mushroom broth. The amount of broth you will need depends on the amount and dryness of the bread. Feel free to add coconut oil or ghee for that extra-rich taste. Yay!)&nbsp;</p><p class="">Your favorite cooking oil - I use Virgin Coconut Oil. You can also use grass-fed ghee.</p><p class="">Celtic Sea Salt (wet grey sea salt like a fleur de sol) &nbsp;</p><p class=""><strong>Next, How To Prepare:</strong>&nbsp;</p><p class="">First, you'll want to chop the onions and garlic. Let them sit while you add the oil to the pot, and let it get hot.&nbsp;</p><p class="">Add the onions and garlic and let them simmer until they are translucent and get a little golden brown.&nbsp;</p><p class="">While that's cooking, chop the Swiss chard, pop the beans, and open the porcini mushrooms. Once the onions and garlic are golden brown, add the beans, juice, and all, then the Swiss chard and stir so all the juices mix. Put the cover on and let simmer for 5-10 minutes.&nbsp;</p><p class="">Next, add your mushroom stock, wild chaga tea, and wild sea veggies. I chop the sea veggies into smaller bite-size pieces with kitchen scissors.&nbsp;</p><p class="">Let simmer for 20 minutes.&nbsp;</p>

  <p class="">This is a guilt-free, gluten-free, vegan, paleo, brownie that has that gooey-gooey tecture we all crave when we think ‘brownie’. </p><p class="">Total time to make and bake is about 40 minutes. </p><p class="">Here is the glorious recipe! </p><p class="">All organic ingreidents were used and recommened. </p><p class=""><strong>Dry mix:&nbsp;</strong></p><p class="">1 cup cassava flour&nbsp;</p><p class="">¼ cup coconut flour&nbsp;</p><p class="">3 TBL ground flax seeds</p><p class="">½ tsp sea salt&nbsp;</p><p class="">1 cup coconut sugar&nbsp;</p><p class="">Mix well and set aside while you make chocolate mix.&nbsp;</p><p class=""><strong>Chocolate mix</strong> that I pour into dry mix:&nbsp;</p><p class="">1 cup raw cacao paste</p><p class="">1/4 cup coconut oil&nbsp;</p><p class="">1 tsp vanilla extract</p><p class="">Variety of medicinal mushrooms like reishi, Chaga, lions mane, etc.</p><p class=""><strong>Mix well until fully melted but on super low heat so it NEVER boils or simmers. Constantly stir or whisk.</strong>&nbsp;</p><p class="">Once melted set aside to cool for a few min </p><p class=""><strong>While you are waiting for the cacao mix to gently cool, add 1 can of guar free coconut milk into the DRY mix</strong> you put aside.</p><p class="">Stir well then fold in chocolate mixture.&nbsp;</p><p class="">When you fold in the cacao mix with a spatula you get a marble colored brownie! </p><p class="">Pour into baking pan that is lined with natural parchment paper that has ZERO silicone coating on it.   <p class="">If we exert influence over our nervous system, we can guide our emotions and strengthen our immunity. A calm nervous system is our best defense against panic and pathogens (including viruses). 2020 has been riddled with intensity. From COVID-19 and the widespread job loss to the struggle to end systemic racism to the Australian wildfires and the ever-unstable and deceptive political climate—many people feel overwhelmed by the wash of frightening stimuli. The long-lasting anger and fear that has erupted for many people is a natural and healthy response, but it can cause our nervous system to remain for long periods in a state called “fight or flight” mode.  Extended periods of fight or flight will weaken the immune system, unhinge the mind, and impede our ability to stay proactive. We can learn to tame our fight or flight response and, by doing so, strengthen our emotional and physical resiliency in these uncertain times.</p><h3>What is Chronic Fight or Flight:</h3><p class="">Fight or flight, also known as “hyperarousal,” is our physiological response to stress inherited from hunter-gatherer ancestors who needed extra speed and alertness to attack, defend, and run from predators. It kicks in naturally (often without us even noticing) as a reaction to environmental or perceived threats. It acts as a survival mechanism, preparing the body to react to dangerous circumstances.</p><p class="">During fight or flight mode, the body’s heart rate rises, muscles tense and breathing quickens. Short periods of FF (like during strenuous exercise) are healthy, assuming the body is allowed the time to recover and return to a state of equilibrium afterward. However, in our modern, fast-paced world, our fight or flight mode is often triggered too often and for too long.</p><p class="">The body of an activist involved in protesting or rioting would likely move into FF mode as the person recognizes the probable danger and aggression posed by police. This is an example of a time when your body very much benefits and can utilize the excitable FF state to protect itself. It’s&nbsp;<em>after</em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>before</em>&nbsp;the marches, all the time at home and going about daily life, that we need to allow our bodies and minds to descend from that heightened state of anxiety. This can be extremely difficult due to the onslaught of news, videos, and interpersonal energies of worry and rage that can threaten to keep us stuck unhelpfully in FF. Feelings of fear, anxiety, anger, etc. are all valid and understandable (especially now), and devotion to a cause is the only way to bring about justice. If those feelings linger in the body without being processed, it will harm the person experiencing them and inversely limit that person’s ability to continue to participate in the protest and do good.&nbsp;</p><p class="">I came to understand the significant effect the nervous system has on our health through my experience with chronic illness. For years I suffered from autoimmune and Lyme disease. While a specialized diet and herbs were essential parts of recovery, I struggled to stabilize and always relapsed. Eventually, my nervous system became affected. I developed light-sensitivity, tics, shakiness, tingling, sleep issues, and cognitive decline. I found that breathing exercises (which I learned through decades practicing yoga) were the only thing that brought extended relief. Breathing exercises worked because of their ability to activate my nervous system’s rest-and-digest mode. It was so effective I began to study other ways to influence our nervous system and to teach these tools to others who suffer from similar illnesses.  </p>

  <p class="">Extended periods in fight or flight mode are especially detrimental to the body because our bodies cannot digest appropriately during FF. When the body’s nervous system is unsettled, we can eat the healthiest meals and still face digestive problems.  For those who suffer from chronic illnesses, their illness often actually activates their fight or flight mode indefinitely, creating a negative feedback loop where the body’s stress response halts its healing processes. An allergic reaction or an overactive immune system can both activate our fight or flight. Additionally, the daily social stresses of trying to raise children, work and maintain relationships exasperate the body further - the body kicks into FF - sensing that it needs the extra spurt of energy to take on these tasks. In this way, fight or flight mode, though its purpose is to rescue us from harm, can be activated too often and hijack our strength, misappropriating our precious vitality when our body needs that energy elsewhere.  </p><p class="">Chris Kessler (author, podcaster, director of CA center for functional medicine) has worked with thousands of people who suffer from chronic illness and autoimmune illness. Kessler notes:</p>

  <p class="">By this, he means fight or flight slows down the movement and elimination of food through the digestive tract and encourages the growth of pathogens. And so, by sabotaging the body’s natural cycles of exertion and necessary recovery, extended fight or flight prioritizes itself and leaves the body less nourished and more vulnerable to illness. This dismantling of the immune system and digestion is especially heinous in the shadow of COVID-19, as we try to build up our bodies’ resilience to viruses.  </p><h3>Psychological Effects of Extended Fight or Flight:&nbsp;</h3><p class="">Our thoughts are an expression of the nervous system. Extended periods of fight or flight are not only harmful to the physical functions of our bodies but can also cause psychological distress. Because the brain is connected to our nervous system, when the nervous system is in a state of upheaval caused by extended FF, it uncenters the mind and can lead to anxiety and depression. Even before the 2020 pandemic or the public outcry in reaction to the tragic and continuing tradition of police brutality in America, many people lived in a constant state of low-grade fear.  </p><p class="">It made sense for the onset of anxiety and FF mode to activate one another in our ancestors' lifestyles for whom potential threats lay around every corner. In the modern world, the way anxiety and the FF mode feed into each other can lead to a psychological /emotional negative feedback loop in which stress triggers FF, and the panicked and exhaustive effects of FF trigger anxiety and depression, so on and so on. This cycle keeps our minds locked in fear, and thus, our immune systems vulnerable. In people with chronic illnesses, the fatigue, indecision, and discomfort of trying to tend to their illness as a result of our compromised immune systems can then activate our FF and our anxiety. This unhealthy spiral is difficult to break. </p><p class="">Many people may find themselves whipped into fight or flight mode during the pandemic's communal anxiety. The atmosphere of cultural dread and worry often manifests as a fight or flight reaction in our bodies, harming our biological functions, deteriorating our mood, and disrupting our immune system. This is counterproductive because the best thing we can do for our bodies to armor against viruses like COVID-19 is learning to quell them&nbsp;<em>out</em>&nbsp;of FF to create the space and time they need to mend and build defenses.&nbsp;</p><p class="">People often attempt to calm their panic and anxiety through self-reassurance. They remind themselves of all the reasons they should not worry. This is ineffective mainly because if tension has already reached a physical pitch in the body, if muscles are tensed, or breath and heart are racing, we need to engage our&nbsp;<em>bodies</em>, not only our minds, in the relaxation process to reach a fully-realized calm.</p><p class="">Both western and natural medicine agree remaining in FF too long causes harm to our physical and emotional well-being. It increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, and contributes to immune system repression.</p><p class="">To summarize: extended fight or flight mode weakens the body's ability to fight off viruses and often causes a psychological spiral into unhealthy and exhausting emotional patterns. In this cycle, the body never descends to a slow enough pace to stabilize and take care of itself, and anxiety and depression can manifest.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

  <h3>Transformation &amp; Hope:&nbsp;</h3><p class="">We can interrupt this negative FF pattern and create a positive feedback loop through natural methods. We have way more control over our nervous system than most people realize. Through various straightforward practices, we can choose to calm our nervous system.   </p><p class="">Our 'rest and digest' mode (or RR) is our body's relaxation response. As flight or flight's counterpart, it is responsible for recovery, relaxation, repair, and digestion. It slows the heart rate, increases intestinal activity, and relaxes the GI response. As we activate our rest and digest response, our body recovers, our mind calms, and our immunity boosts. Brian Mackenzie (creator of CrossFit) has said he doesn't believe in "over-training," I only in "under-recovering."  We can train harder, exercise more, work harder, heal more efficiently, and complete and be more proactive (such as protest ) if we allow ourselves to recover profoundly. We can only deeply recover in RR. If we learn to detect when we are in 'fight or flight' and calm our bodies into rest and digest, our minds will naturally follow suit. </p><p class="">Though external influences often throw off our natural equilibrium, we possess innate mental wellness. Poor nutrition, wrongly or overly prescribed medication, environmental stressors, and trauma are some external factors that can imbalance our nervous system and, by extension, put us out of touch with our bodies and upset our minds. When we calm the nervous system, more optimistic, peaceful, and level-headed thoughts follow. This way, a positive feedback loop can be established. Learn to sense and influence our nervous system, a stable baseline of bodily and emotional calm can be more easily maintained, and external influences will be less able to throw us off.</p><p class=""><br></p><h3>Learning to Influence Our Immune Systems:</h3><p class="">Knowledge + Action = Power &amp; Change.&nbsp;</p><p class="">You can interrupt the painful cycle of extended FF's negative feedback loop through simple methods. With practice, you'll learn to sense nervous system shifts in your body, including the early onset of FF mode. You are capable of navigating your body and mind into a positive feedback loop!  </p><p class="">Because FF diminishes the function of the brain's prefrontal cortex, which is essential for wise and productive decision-making, it is necessary to guide yourself into RR to make decisions with clarity and insight. While FF is helpful to spark the urge and emotion essential for fundamental change, to be proactive for this planet in the long run, we need to be rested, and we need the ability to think clearly and make the right decisions.  This centeredness can only happen in RR. Something I've always taught people chronic illness is never to make health decisions (or any major life decisions) in a state of panic. Wait until you can calm yourself first, then can you build a course of action from a stable place, that will prove more fruitful in the long run.  </p><p class="">There are many physical ways to activate our rest and digest mode in the nervous system. Some of these include mediation, restorative yoga, walking, internal martial arts, and barefoot grounding. While vigorous exercise (like running) temporarily activates the fight or flight, its overall effect on the nervous system is profoundly calming as long as you give your body time to slow down and recover after.     </p><p class="">Modern psychology also uses physical practices to activate the rest and digest response, such as somatic therapy; EFT and EMDR are types of somatic therapy. Patients recall a traumatic or stressful experience as a therapist guides them through a physical practice. The trauma begins to resolve once a patient can remember the painful experience in a relaxed nervous state system. A nonprofit called "The Veteran Stress Project" conducted a study that found 8 out of 10 veterans who completed 6 one-hour-long EFT sessions no longer tested positive for PTSD. Through somatic therapy, we can rewire our physiological triggers and train our bodies to resist falling into long, harmful periods of fight or flight.</p>

  <h3>Square Breathing/Yogic Breath/Box Breathing Instructions:  </h3><p class="">This type of breathing engages a pause after the in-breath and after the out-breath. The in-breath, out-breath, and pauses are all practiced for the same amount of time. If you have never engaged in breathwork before, start with four seconds. It will look like this:  </p><p class="">Breathe in for the count of four.  </p><p class="">Hold for the count of four.  </p><p class="">Breathe out for the count of four.  </p><p class="">Hold after the out-breath for a count of four.   </p><p class="">5-10 minutes of this breathwork is suggested to engage the rest and digest response deeply. Even just a few rounds of square breathing can help to calm the body and center the mind. As you become more comfortable with breathwork, you can gradually increase your practice. Below you'll find two links to other breathwork videos I like.  </p><h3>Conclusion:   </h3><p class="">I've spent more time focusing on the benefits of calming the nervous system than practical tips because the practice can be simple. Activating your 'rest and digest' mode can be as easy as taking a walk, lying in corpse pose, getting a massage or a short breathing exercise.   </p><p class="">My desire is that by understanding the benefits of a calm, nervous system, it will inspire you to integrate these practices into your life.  With practice, you can detect the subtle shifts in your nervous system and exert significant influence over it.   <p class="">I had the distinct pleasure of making something special for <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BmyV8hDnrkO/?hl=en&amp;taken-by=carrieannemoss" target="_blank">Carrie Anne Moss's birthday</a>. Nothing brings me more joy then to be able to create something full of love that is filled with powerful, nutrient dense foods that quite literally enliven the senses.&nbsp;</p><p class="">Guilt-free, grain-free, vegan, raw and free of processed sugar, this pie or superfood torte is pure magic! For close to 15 years now I have been making a version of this superfood torte and used to sell it during the holiday season!</p><p class="">Foods De Les Fae is the name of my food creations company. More posh sounding then Faery Foods, it is complete with magical dust and outlandish decorations. This particular piece was finished off with sunflower petals and an amethyst crystal.&nbsp;</p><p class="">The recipes itself takes less then 20 minutes;&nbsp;you'll want to give this luscious beauty time to set before you serve!&nbsp;</p><p class="">All the ingredients I use are always organic.&nbsp;</p><h3><strong>CRUST INGREDIENTS:&nbsp;</strong></h3><p class="">1 Cup Coconut Flakes</p><p class="">3 TBL Cacao Nibs</p><p class="">2 TBL Raw Honey</p><h3><strong>DIRECTIONS for the crust:</strong></h3><p class="">Use a Cuisinart to blend the coconut flakes, honey and cacao nibs. Be sure to pulse it as you want to keep some texture. it will be sticky like a dough and easy to form the crust but have some texture with the nibs. Form crust into 9" pie plate and then let set in the fridge while making the filling.&nbsp;</p><h3><strong>cacao filling ingredients:</strong></h3><p class="">1 Cup Melted Arriba Raw Cacao Paste</p><p class="">1/2 Cup Guar Free Coconut Milk</p><p class="">1/4 Cup Warmed Coconut Butter&nbsp;</p><p class="">3 TBL Raw Honey</p><p class="">1 TBL Vanilla Extract or Vanilla Bean Powder</p><p class="">1 tsp Ashwagandha Extract Powder</p><p class="">1 tsp Shatavari Extract Powder</p><p class="">1/4 tsp Celtic Sea Salt</p><h3><strong>Directions for cacao filling:&nbsp;</strong></h3><p class="">Melt the cacao paste using a double boiler or by slowly and gently warming it up in a sauce pan on low heat. Once melted, using a high powered blender, add the above ingredients and blend until smooth and creamy. It may be a fudge like consistency. Pour it into the pie plate and let set in the fridge while you make your coconut cream layer!</p><h3><strong>Coconut Cream Topping:</strong></h3><p class="">1 Cup Guar Free Coconut Milk</p><p class="">1/4 Cup Coconut Butter&nbsp;</p><p class="">2 TBL Agar Agar Gel (easy to make and great for these kinds of needs)&nbsp;</p><p class="">1 tsp Vanilla Extract or Vanilla Bean Powder&nbsp;</p><p class="">Pinch Celtic Sea Salt</p><h3><strong>Directions for Coconut cream topping:</strong></h3><p class="">Add all ingredients into the blender, blend on high until smooth and creamy. Before pouring the filling over the chocolate, whip with a spoon or whisk to help the air bubbles escape after being blended. Pour over the chocolate filling and let set in the fridge for a good hour. Once this glorious pie is set, let the creativity flow and decorate in whatever way is calling you.   <h3>Ingredients:&nbsp;</h3><p class="">2 Cups Spring Water</p><p class="">1/4 Cup Organic Full Fat Coconut Milk</p><p class="">1 TBL Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil</p><p class="">1 TBL Organic Arriba Cacao Butter</p><p class="">3 TBL Organic Arriba Cacao Nibs (I used nibs in this drink; feel free to use cacao paste or powder in place of nibs)</p><p class="">1 tsp Raw Unfiltered Organic Honey</p><p class="">1/2 tsp Organic Turmeric Extract Powder</p><p class="">1/2 tsp Organic Stevia Leaf Powder</p><p class="">Pinch of Celtic Sea Salt&nbsp;</p><h3>Directions:</h3><p class="">First you'll want to warm the 2 cups of water. Take it off the heat before it come to a boil so you can put it into your blender without worrying to much about the plastic leaching if at all.&nbsp;</p><p class="">Next add the coconut oil and butter, then the rest of the ingredients. Blend on high until smooth and frothy. Pour into your favorite vessel and enjoy!&nbsp;</p><h3>Benefits:</h3><p class="">The Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory with Curcumin as it's main natural compound constituent. This particular extract of turmeric makes this drink that much more powerful with a very high does of curcumin even in a 1/2 tsp.&nbsp;</p><p class="">Turmeric also dramatically increases the antioxidant capacity of the body. If we think about that for a minute, that is huge. Especially when combined with cacao which is a huge source of antioxidants. It's the number 1 food source of Magnesium.   <p class="">In the cooler months I like to always have a mushroom broth available for recipes like this one. You can also make the broth on the fly, no need to store the broth if that's not your style.&nbsp;</p><p class="">Here's the "How To:"&nbsp;</p><p class=""><em>Make shiitake mushroom broth:</em>&nbsp;</p><p class="">Bring the water to a boil (the mushrooms with the stems) and then simmer until the water becomes a nice golden brown.</p><p class="">Let cool slightly and pour into blender.&nbsp;</p><p class=""><strong>TIP:&nbsp;</strong>For a creamy version blend the mushrooms and stems; for a thinner broth like version, strain the mushrooms and stems and use only the broth.</p><p class=""><em>Now Add to the blender:&nbsp;</em></p><ul data-rte-list="default"><li><p class="">2-3 fresh garlic cloves</p></li><li><p class="">1 TBL Sweet Miso</p></li><li><p class="">1/2 tsp Celtic Sea Salt</p></li></ul><p class="">Blend until smooth and pour into a bowl. You are such a Renaissance woman- a natural health activist and specialist, a coach, an Entrepreneur, a Mom of beautiful twin boys- you literally do it all! I would like to know what your focus is now- I know that for a while you were pure raw vegan- is that still a practice for you?”</p><p class=""><strong><em>Gabrielle:&nbsp;</em></strong>“I still eat a ton of raw foods, but I’ve evolved from being 100% raw foods/raw vegan, just from my own studies and what my body has needed. So, it is still something that is a part of my life, but my focus has become more rounded because of my studies in Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine and in BioIndividuality. It’s really about the whole body and what the individual needs. Feeling good shouldn’t be a sin, it should be something WE strive for every day. There’s no need to feel guilty about what we put on our skin or what we put into our body, to who we hang out with, and what we chose to think, and how we choose to live.This PHILOSOPHY has become a very important message WITHIN MY COACHING, guilt-free pleasure. ”</p><p class=""><strong><em>SKB:&nbsp;</em></strong>“I love it. I love it. So, when you started changing the way you ate, primarily eating raw food and eating vegan in the beginning, did you notice changes in your skin?”</p><p class=""><strong><em>GB:&nbsp;</em></strong></p><blockquote><p class="">“Oh absolutely! What I loved and what I still love about eating such a pure diet is that you just are beaming! There is something SO SPECIAL that happens when a person chooses to become raw vegan for a while – it is a cleansing way of living. Your body goes through a period of completely letting go of everything it’s held onto for years. At the same time you’re cleaning and if done correctly, you’re simultaneously feeding your body an incredible amount of nutrients and vitamins, that had been missing. The result, a big beamy glow.</p></blockquote><blockquote><p class="">When you think about it, it’s how we wake up to a certain level of ideology about our nutrition and health, right?… we begin to let go of what we used to do and we try on something like organic or all raw or all vegan and or, all of the above – the cleansing that your body goes through is SO pure.&nbsp;Your skin is just glowing- you wake up and roll out of bed and look in the mirror, and the glow that you have when eating such a pure lifestyle is phenomenal. I do believe that being a raw vegan is great for a period of time. And then I believe it’s important to look at where we need to re-build our body. That looks different for every individual. As does any specific element of a lifestyle.”</p><p class="">“I was vegan for 15 years and a raw vegan for 10 of those 15 years. When I became pregnant with the twins, I thought I could ignore the cravings that I had in the 4th or 5th month. They got stronger by the 6th month and it was then I had my first bit or organic grass-fed meat. My body was like ‘Oh my God thank you SO much!!’ [laughter from both] And all of a sudden I had energy, and my brain fog went away. It was very emotionally and spiritually trying (eating meat) but I couldn’t deny what the nutritional needs were while growing two babies! I think there comes that point of philosophy versus science, at times.”</p></blockquote><p class=""><strong><em>SKB:&nbsp;</em></strong>“Omigosh absolutely! 100%! You know, when I did my yoga teacher training and I studied with <a href="http://lamamigmar.net/">Lama Migmar</a>, he went vegan for a long time. He realized it did not agree with him physically even though spiritually it did. From a physical and from an evolutionary standpoint, he’s from Tibet. His ancestors relied on meat as one of their primary sources of nutrition and that has not changed for him as a descendant. He told us that if you go to a store and choose organic grass fed meat that karmically, it’s not so bad because the meat is there- it is already dead. He said it would be different if you either killed it yourself or if you chose it and had someone kill it for you. So he said in modern society the spiritual and karmic implications are different.”</p><p class=""><strong><em>GB: “</em></strong>Exactly! Exactly. I read John Robbins’ book “<a href="http://johnrobbins.info/">Healthy to 100</a>” and he was looking at the different cultures and looking at the people who were healthfully living to 100 and were still active and looked youthful and still had physical activity in their life. They all had a little bit of animal product, whether it was fish, or meat, eggs, or dairy. What they had, depended on where they were geographically – but they had some kind of animal product, even if it was something like 4 ounces for the whole week! The point being, it was still in their diet. That was the other piece that was fascinating for me. I totally geek out and I like to understand the science behind things but I’m also a philosopher…but in thinking about just that piece alone, of ‘what does our body need?’ looking at the person as an individual, we really have to put dogma aside. We have to look at what is necessary for a person’s body in order for them to have that radiant glow.   <p class=""><strong><em>GB:&nbsp;</em></strong>“Great question! [pauses thoughtfully] Pleasure. Right?! [laughter] I mean… on the simplest level, are we making choices that make us feel happy? Do they give us pleasure? As you know, Ashli, I’m obsessed with eating foods that are simply delicious and offer profound nutrition for the body. Cacao, raw chocolate, herbal elixirs, and then of course meals that are cooked with whole foods; at the root, my philosophy for beauty is really on the simplest level- making choices that make us feel good about ourselves. As goes my motto,&nbsp;<em>“There are no rules, only choices.”&nbsp;</em>This idea that we have to do this ‘one thing’ in order to achieve this one result- is a lie! It is an absolute lie and it keeps us chained into dogmas and belief systems that are outdated. I also think that some of these belief systems that we’ve accepted as a culture are emotional responses to the abuse we’ve witnessed to the planet and the animals in commercial farming and agriculture, which I myself, can align with. So, to speak to the philosophy of beauty and health, it is just as easy to make a choice to eat an organic, scrumptious, totally decadent raw food meal that offers powerful nutrition, or an organic cooked meal with grass fed meat, or whatever it is that you choose for your body that makes you feel strong, healthy and vibrant. Whatever that choice is, that’s what we should be doing every single day. When we’re happy with the choices we make, we’re happy in life!&nbsp;There’s two kinds of glow – there’s the ‘My Body is Healthy’ glow and then there’s the ‘I’m Fucking HAPPY!’ glow. And when you put those two together? Well, you’re beaming!”</p><blockquote><p class=""><strong>SKB:</strong><em>&nbsp;</em>[laughter from both] “Oh my God this is everything! And also- just a side note- to me there is no food that gives me more pleasure than dark chocolate. Cacao. Holy moly”&nbsp;<strong>GB:</strong><em>&nbsp;</em>“Oh you know I’m obsessed. Just obsessed. After all, in its latin name means ‘Food of the gods’ ”&nbsp;<strong>SKB:&nbsp;</strong>“Gabrielle makes an amazing chocolate bar called “The ONE raw fudge bar…when I was pregnant I HAD to have it!!!”&nbsp;<strong>GB</strong><em>:&nbsp;</em>“For me, cacao was and still is, an alchemical agent. It completely opened my eyes to another world.”</p></blockquote><p class=""><strong><em>SKB:&nbsp;</em></strong>“What would you say to someone who is just beginning on a journey to becoming more health conscious and eating better, and taking better care of their skin- where should they begin?”</p><p class=""><strong>GB:</strong><em>&nbsp;</em>“I think there are two to three things that we should do when we are embarking on a lifestyle change. The most important is to <em>make realistic choices.</em>&nbsp;Look at your life honestly. Look at your schedule, you commitments, and then make and honest choice. Honest choices support everlasting change. Put down the quick diet, put down the ‘I’m going to do a fast for 30 days and lose 60 pounds’- I mean that’s great it has its place- but after that- what’s your plan? We have to make realistic choices that support lasting change. If I’m working 40 hours a week, I’ve got kids, I’ve got a husband, my weekends are spent doing family activities plus making sure the house is clean, plus working on projects, hobbies and or passions, what choices can I make that are realistic in maintaining the healthy choice? For example, saying, ‘I’m going to replace my lunch every day with a smoothie, a smoothie that still is a meal replacement and filled with whole food nutrients that tastes divine. Is this a realistic change that you could sustain and do for a year or the rest of your life even? You might be like, ‘You know what? I’m fine with having lunch as my smoothie, and yes I’m going to go out to lunch sometimes, but in general I’m going to have a smoothie at lunch time.’ Instead of saying, ‘I’m going to have a SlimFast for every meal for the next month”<strong><em>&nbsp;SKB:</em></strong><em>&nbsp;</em>“Ugh. Ugh. Terrible! You’re going to be starving for the next month and have no energy from no protein and no nutrients!”</p><p class=""><strong><em>GB: “</em></strong>Yes exactly! Terrible! And completely unrealistic for the capacity of the lives we lead!”</p><p class=""><strong><em>GB:</em></strong><em>&nbsp;</em>“Two,&nbsp;<em>go all organic</em>. It’s Easy! Just look at what you’re eating and choose organic. Start there. Sometimes with my clients when I first work with them, I’m like ‘Ok- the only thing I want you to do for the next 3 weeks is eat organic food’ and they’re like, ‘That’s it?” I say, “Do that, and talk to me in 2 weeks”. Within a week I’m getting emails saying, ‘Oh my God my headaches are gone…’ or ‘I lost 10 pounds!’ or, ‘My sugar cravings have stopped!’ It’s powerful because there was an awareness brought to the kind of food they are putting in their body – they learn to read labels and the changes are significant and profound. Then step three would be to <em>add two or three powerful, super foods to the diet</em>. Of course, first I’m always going to recommend raw cacao. Then maybe get some chlorella or spiralina or maca or goji berries- something that is enjoyable but that is going to put you just slightly out of your comfort zone and that you have to learn to work with. A food that makes you feel better in a way that you haven’t quite felt before and yet have been looking for.”</p><p class="">“I think those three steps are the easiest. A realistic assessment of your lifestyle, go organic and add superfoods.   <p class=""><strong><em>SKB:&nbsp;</em></strong>“I love this though because it shifts it from being punitive, to actually doing things out of self love. Coming from a place of ‘I want to take care of myself and therefore I’m going to eat xyz..’ A SlimFast three meals a day or going on a ‘Cleanse’- I HATE that word in terms of a diet because if you are eating healthfully you don’t need to cleanse yourself of anything because your food IS cleansing…it feels like you’re punishing yourself! A SlimFast for every meal? Ugh you feel like you’re being punished!”</p><p class=""><strong><em>GB: &nbsp;</em></strong>“I agree! I do believe in cleansing at the right time and if people do them with someone guiding them. In general though the three steps I mentioned are what will bring lasting change as a ‘way of life’. And then “diet food” ugh, Right?! I mean, I remember when I was a personal trainer, and eating healthy had the stigma of eating these power bars and dry chicken breasts with carrot sticks… &nbsp;are you kidding me? I want to friggin’ hurt myself!”&nbsp;<strong>SKB:</strong><em>&nbsp;</em>“Exactly! It’s like you’re in a black hole with a dry piece of meat on the floor in front of you!” [laughter from both]&nbsp;<strong>GB:</strong><em>&nbsp;</em>“Yes! So let’s take that philosophy of eating healthfully, and just upgrade it!”</p><p class=""><strong><em>SKB:&nbsp;</em></strong>“What food makes you feel the best? I know Cacao is definitely one of them! What is one of your favorite high vibration superfoods?”</p><p class=""><strong><em>GB: &nbsp;</em></strong>“There’s two things that come to mind. One is Spirulina. I adore this food. When I first was raw my body actually couldn’t take it and it made me sick. I could eat Chlorella by the pound! Over time however, I could add a little but here and there. And then, I have found over the years that I would crave it. My kids eat it too- I put it in our salads on a regular basis and in our smoothies on a regular basis. It’s great on some avocado! It just makes me feel like I’m in the sun. I now that sounds bizarre- but it gives me that feeling of a warm strength. I feel great and I feel strong when eating it. The nutritional profile is insane of course- it’s got a very high amount of protein, vitamins A, K and B12, plus minerals and so much more. It helps with candida and weight loss. It’s a gorgeous deep dark, blue green algae so you’re getting those important hues which is very important to our nutrition.”</p><p class=""><strong><em>SKB:&nbsp;</em></strong>“You first introduced me to maca and goji berries. So, I used to make this little mix, and I still do, of raw local honey, goji berries, raw cacao nibs, maca powder and walnuts as my breakfast in the morning and it makes melee &nbsp;so happy!”</p><p class=""><strong><em>GB:&nbsp;</em></strong>“That was me? Wow.&nbsp;Thank you for still being part of my world, and for sharing in this incredibly profound journey.&nbsp;<br><br>If you have just subscribed, hello and welcome! I am grateful to have you as part of this passionate community.<br><br>I’m sure you’re wondering about my subject line and how my father’s stage 4 cancer has completely changed my life.&nbsp;I’ve written this letter in my head so many times, and I am finally ready to actually talk about it.&nbsp;<br><br>This is my father's second bout of stage 4 cancer. This time though, there is only one road, and it will ultimately lead to his freedom of body, mind and spirit.&nbsp;<br><br>This past year has been so incredibly difficult on so many levels.   <p class="">He is my first love,&nbsp;hero and my best friend. In many ways, my father is my soulmate. As a modern day Indiana Jones (and I am not exaggerating), my father has traveled around the world in search of treasure, and on a quest to make his dreams come true.&nbsp;He has lived more lives in his one lifetime than most people ever dream. He was the lead singer of a band in the late 60’s and early 70’s called,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEC8lXB3YJY" target="_blank">The Sundowners</a>.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEC8lXB3YJY" target="_blank">Captain Nemo</a>&nbsp;was Decca Records FIRST rock album! My dad toured with The Monkees, as well as Jimmy Hendrix and many others. You can check out their big hit <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjlte3uAgKE" target="_blank">Always You on Youtube</a>. You can also listen to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXV7AZLNw40" target="_blank">Let It Be Me</a>.&nbsp;I like this one the best. In <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXV7AZLNw40" target="_blank">Let It Be Me</a>&nbsp;you can really hear his beautiful voice. &nbsp;I wish I had recordings of his other songs. This album doesn’t really show what an incredible singer he really was. Regardless, it’s cool!<br><br>The biggest gift my father has given me is a lesson in courage.&nbsp;A lesson on what it takes to be true to oneself. To reach for our dreams and goals no matter what. Like any of us, he has his flaws, but his goodness far outweighs his faults.&nbsp;<br><br>If we do not love with our whole being, what is the point of anything in this world?&nbsp;We must live for truth, and the undeniable rhythm and beating of our own drum.&nbsp;<br><br>CHOICE is the most powerful tool we have in our tool box.&nbsp;<br><br>Being present to my father’s journey in life has taught me about the power of love and forgiveness. It has taught me about the courage needed to look truth and our demons directly in the eye.&nbsp;<br><br>It is our birthright to have love. It is our birthright &nbsp;to live a life we are HAPPY to be part of; a life where we dance to OUR OWN unique rhythm.&nbsp;<br><br>What are YOUR dreams?&nbsp;<br><br>Are you doing what makes YOU happy on a soul level?&nbsp;<br><br>Are you LIVING in a way that makes you feel grateful and happy to be who YOU are meant to be?&nbsp;<br><br>Are you HAPPY?&nbsp;<br><br>Do you FEEL amazing?&nbsp;<br><br>If you answered NO to ANY of these questions, then I ask you to take a journey with me into finding YOUR pleasure.&nbsp;<br><br>What is this PLEASURE PRINCIPAL?<br><br>It is understanding that the CHOICES we make everyday support and empower us in feeling AMAZING; or not.&nbsp;<br><br>STOP feeling GUILTY for who you are and for what you want.&nbsp;<br><br>It’s time to take your power back.   <h3><strong>You’ve been in full mama mode these past years, what have you learnED through this experience that can help other women on this journey?</strong></h3><blockquote><p class="">“Being a mother is the biggest life changing event I think we as women will ever go through. To grow a human and then raise one, which at times feels like we are being raised by our children, self love is the biggest, loudest lesson that plays over and over again. Self love is so fundamentally important to our health and to raising healthy children. It shows up in simple ways and in complex ways… like getting enough sleep, eating properly, taking time out to be alone with self, to the complex in remembering who we are, not getting lost in motherhood and breathing life into our dreams, remembering what it is like to be a hot sexy woman lol - this is so, so important in maintaining a fabulous relationship with a spouse or lover… and of course self. It is *so* easy to forget and to become totally consumed with being a mother. Remembering who we are as our individual self, having fun, laughing, dressing up, allowing ourselves pleasure… these are the ways we not only get to be the best version of ourselves, but it is how we raise exceptional children. Remember who you are… beautiful, powerful, strong, soft, tender, sensual, a safe space for self and for the world to rest their weary heads.</p></blockquote><p class="">— Gabrielle</p><h3><strong>What characteristics in a woman epitomize beauty for you?</strong></h3><blockquote><p class="">“When a women knows who she is and is unashamed to be herself - unedited - that is so awe inspiring and beautiful. When she is humble in her beauty but yet totally aware of who she is… it’s a powerful thing to witness. One of my most favorite things to witness is a women being kind and tender to a man. I think the world has gotten a little over-heated with the ‘feminine rising’ … nothing is more feminine then having the strength and courage in allowing a man to be his fully expressed, masculine, self. Something that raising boys has driven in pretty deeply. There is no need to fear a man or his power - when we emasculate a man - we are trying to steal his power because we ultimately feel unsafe in our own. To give a man some of our own power, for example to lift him up and allow him to be fully masculine, we in turn become the epitome of the Divine Feminine. There is nothing more beautiful then to be a strong, tender, kind, fully empowered woman. It is what all men live for… and what we as women, strive to achieve.</p></blockquote><p class="">— Gabrielle</p><h3><strong>What are the core principles you have adopted as a lifestyle that have had dramatic changes in your life?</strong></h3><blockquote><p class="">“Dedication and flexibility are core principles that have been monumental in changing my life. We have to be dedicated to our path, to our dreams, to truth. It is the only way to achieve that which truly fulfills us. Having said that, being dedicated does not mean becoming rigid, flexibility is the key.   <h2>While driving and contemplating life I ....</h2><p class="">decided to share in a voice note how important it is to let our children be our muses. As mothers or parents, it can be so challenging to step outside the roles of responsibility and for a moment, stand in the bliss that IS parenting, mothering, and bare witness to the miracle that stands before us.&nbsp;</p><p class="">It is so epically essential that we give space and give way to the magic of motherhood and enjoy the visions before us.</p><p class="">To give way to the <em>inspiration </em>instead of<em> stress, </em>that permeates our existence, and do what we are here to do... build a better future. A more fertile ground. A place where our children's children, have more opportunity, more peace, more clean water, more clean food, more clean air... more love.&nbsp;</p>

The truth about ourselves, the truth about what trigger us, the truth about what we are experiencing and why. It also means hearing these truths from our partner knowing it may reveal a deep rooted layer within self, that may need to be peeled away. When we show up to ourselves with this maturity and commitment, knowing that there is nothing ugly about our imperfections, we have an incredible opportunity to transform; thus will our partner and the relationship itself.   <h2>This Pie is so delicious you will be the envy of every guest! Healthy and guilt free - this is the perfect pie for the holiday season.&nbsp;</h2><p class="">&nbsp;</p><h3>* All Ingredients are Organic&nbsp;</h3><p class="">&nbsp;</p><h2>See Directions below.&nbsp;</h2>

  <h1><strong>Crust:</strong></h1><h3>2 Cup Soaked Pecans</h3><h3>2 TBL Chia Powder</h3><h3>2 TBL Coconut Nectar</h3><h3>Pinch Celtic Sea Salt</h3><h2>Substitutions:&nbsp;</h2><p class="">You can choose any sweet nut that you like as the crust base as well as any low glycemic sweeter. Be sure to use the correct ratios when substituting a power sweeter for a liquid sweeter.&nbsp;</p><h2>Directions:&nbsp;</h2><p class="">For the Crust:&nbsp;blend soaked pecans with all ingredients in cuisinart until sticky. Press into pie plate and let sit while you make the filling.</p><h1>&nbsp;</h1><h1><strong>Filling:&nbsp;</strong></h1><h3>1 Sugar Pie Pumpkin - de-seeded &amp; skinned cut into 1 inch chunks</h3><h3>1/2 Cup Coconut Nectar</h3><h3>1/2 Cup Purified Water</h3><h3>2- 3 TBL Coconut Butter (warmed)</h3><h3>2 TBL Irish Moss Gel</h3><h3>1 - 2 tsp Cinnamon</h3><h3>1-2 tsp Nutmeg</h3><h3>1 tsp Vanilla</h3><h3>1 tsp Clove Powder</h3><h3>Pinch of Celtic Sea Salt</h3><h2>Substitutions:&nbsp;</h2><p class="">You can use any low glycemic sweeter you like and in place of Irish Moss you can choose another healthy thickening agent. I will say though, that Irish Moss is very high in minerals and is light so it offers a very light and fluffy gel like experience for any recipe.&nbsp;</p><h2>Directions:&nbsp;</h2><p class="">For the Filling:&nbsp;pulse prepped pumpkin in cuisinart until finely chopped. Transfer to vita-mix (or other high powered blender), add rest of filling ingredients and blend on high until very creamy! Pour into pie plate and place in fridge to set for 45 minutes.</p><h3>&nbsp;</h3><h1><strong>Whipped Cream:</strong></h1><h3>1 Cup Macadamia Nuts</h3><h3>1/4 Cup Coconut Nectar</h3><h3>4 TBL purified water</h3><h3>2 TBL Irish Moss Gel</h3><h3>1 TBL Coconut Oil</h3><h3>1 tsp Vanilla Extract</h3><h2>Substitutions:&nbsp;</h2><p class="">You can also use Coconut Milk to make whipped cream and of course any low glycemic sweeter like Liquid Stevie Extract, Xylitol, and or Erythritol.&nbsp;</p><h2>Directions:&nbsp;</h2><p class="">While the pie is setting you can make the Whipped Cream:&nbsp;place all ingredients in the Vita-Mix (or other high powered blender) and blend on high until smooth &amp; creamy.&nbsp;Let set in fridge with the pie.&nbsp;</p><p class="">&nbsp;</p><h2>SERVE &amp; ENJOY!&nbsp;</h2>
