The full moon this April 2019 is called Pink Moon, and I just cannot wait to see it in full detail. It is scheduled this Friday, April 19, 2019; and for moon gazers, you should be out at exactly 7:12PM.

Photo by Michelle Reid on Unsplash

Why is it even called Pink Moon?

It wouldn’t exactly appear Pink, but it’s a term coined by Native American tribes because it happens just before ‘pink moss’ or ‘moss pink’ starts to appear. The plant is a species of flowering plant in the family Polemoniaceae, native to eastern and central USA.

Moss pink (Phlox subulata)
Media Type: Image; Website Name: Encyclopædia Britannica; Publisher: Encyclopædia Britannica; Url: https://www.britannica.com/plant/moss-pink/media/393792/6913

I am still hoping for it to appear literally pink though. It’s the time when the moon is located at the opposite side of Earth as the sun. This means that its face is fully lit, and basically at its photogenic looks.

We also consulted with Mikael Angelo Francisco of FlipScience.ph, and he confirmed that science checks out. Mikael added:

“Other cultures call it the Sprouting Grass Moon or the Egg Moon. Some coastal tribes in the northern US call it the Fish Moon, because its appearance signals the time when the shad, a type of fish highly valued in recreational fishing, swim upstream to spawn.”

“Another interesting fact about this year’s Pink Moon: It’s the reason why we’re celebrating Easter Sunday on April 21. Each year, the Church celebrates Easter on the Sunday immediately following the Full Moon that falls on or after March 21 (meaning that if the Full Moon falls on a Sunday, Easter is celebrated one week later). This is based on the Church’s own lunar calendar, which may or may not coincide with the vernal equinox (the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere). Granted, that’s not really significant here in the Philippines, but hey – at least we get a lovely view of the Moon as a result!”

What’s the best way to “immortalize” this breathtaking view of the moon?

There are various ways to take photos of the moon. Some use sophisticated cameras and lenses, while some simply use smartphones. We’re recommending gears and specific settings on DSLRs, but we recommend that you tweak it as there are many conditions that affect taking photos of celestial objects.

Our recommended gears:

  • DSLR
  • 200mm+ telephoto lens
  • Stable Tripod
  • Remote Trigger or set camera to timer mode

Other recommended gears:

  • Huawei P30 Pro that can go 50x Digital Zoom
  • Smartphone Stand
  • Stable Tripod

Whatever you’re using – be it DSLR with telephoto lens or Huawei P30 Pro 50x digital zoom, the recommended settings are as follows:

DSLR (Manual Mode)

  • ISO: 100 if you have a Canon DSLR and to 200 if you have a Nikon DSLR (For most other brands, the base ISO is also 100. Do this in Manual Mode.
  • Aperture: Set your aperture to f/11.
  • Shutter Speed: Set your shutter speed to 1/125 to 1/150.
  • Lens Focus: Set your lens to manual focus (either through a switch on the lens or on the camera) and set your focus to infinity. Be careful while setting the focus to infinity, as some lenses allow focusing beyond infinity. On more advanced DSLRs such as Nikon D300, there is a handy feature called “live-view with contrast detect”, which can accurately acquire focus on distant objects. I have used it many times for my moon photography and it works great! If you do not have such a feature in your camera, then try setting your lens to the center of the infinity sign, then take a picture and see if it came out sharp by zooming in the rear LCD of the camera.

Huawei P30 Pro (Moon Mode)

This smartphone’s new periscope lens enable it to take photos of subjects from miles away. In this case, we’re aiming to take photos of the moon, so it is important to take note of how you can it with a smartphone with such level of capability.

  • Enable Master AI
  • Zoom it to 10x or more and it should trigger MOON Mode
  • Take the shot

Huawei P30 Pro (Pro Mode)

  • ISO: Set it from 80 to 100. Keep in mind that this will vary on certain locations you’re shooting a photo from.
  • Shutter Speed: Set your shutter speed to 1/125 to 1/150.
  • Lens Focus: Auto-Focus should be fine, but we recommend that you set to AF-S as the moon is a stationary subject
  • Aperture:  In Pro Mode, Huawei P30 Pro does not give an option to set it. It will, however, set it to f/3.5 to the smallest aperture opening
  • Use a tripod and a smartphone clamp

This article will obviously be updated. We’ll try our best to post a photo with our recommended settings. If you have anything to add, or tips that will help everyone take gorgeous photos, please don’t hesitate to share them in the comments section below. For now, let’s hope that it wouldn’t be too cloudy this Friday so we can see the pink moon clearly.

So you got yourself a new drone to document your travels this summer. Your new stop is Boracay for a full week, and you thought that bringing your drone will upgrade your documenting game by showing how you enjoyed the scenic views and all the stuff you enjoyed with your friends or family. Then you realized you cannot use it unless you have the permit to fly it in Boracay.

According to a friend’s connection, Joel Andrada, “Malay LGU has a municipal ordinance. You need to secure a permit to fly. And you are only allowed to fly outside the 10km radius from the nearest airport which means drones can’t fly over the famous White Beach. CAAP Licensed Pilots are sometimes allowed as long as cleared with LGU.”

Based on what he said, CAAP License does not automatically give you the clearance to fly your drone, so it’s safe to say that the ordinance supersedes it. Nevertheless, it’s still best to get CAAP License plus permit to fly in Boracay.  If you want to know more about how you can get UAV Certificate from CAAP, contact them at info@ato.gov.ph / + 63 2 879 9229. Without CAAP license, you can still fly your drone in Boracay, provided that you have the permit. However, if you’re flying it for commercial purposes or flying a drone that weighs 7 kilograms (15 pounds) or more, a CAAP license is required.

Consider this your guide on how you can fly your drone in Boracay.

Step 1: Know the specifications of your drone

You need to be fully aware and familiar of the drone you’re going to pilot. Information like serial number and model/type can be seen from the drone, but you also have to be familiar with how far and high it can reach and flight duration in a single battery charge.

If you wish to quickly see basic information about your drone, you may refer to this chart.

Step 2: Download, fill out and print this template

You will need to request permission from the Municipal Mayor of Malay to fly your drone. When I went to their office in Boracay, they handed me over a form, which I need to copy on a blank sheet of paper and submit accordingly. Here’s a template that you can download. Be sure to fill everything out and print accordingly. You will need this when you request for permit to fly in Boracay.

While you’re asking for a permit to fly in Boracay, the issuing party is Malay office so it’s up to you if you wish to change the content of the permit to fly it “in Malay, Aklan” instead of “in Boracay”. This, logically, lifts the limit to fly your drone in permitted areas like Puka Beach. Note that there are specific areas where you won’t be allowed to fly your drone in Boracay. Be sure to check out Airmap for your reference.

Download Here

Note that their office is open only from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Step 3: Submit Form Municipal Mayor’s Office office

The office of the municipal mayor of Malay is near Station 1. The office is near Our Lady of Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, and just above MSWD’s office. Head up to the 3rd floor, and look for Anna Marie Daulong. She’s the one who is issuing the form and giving instructions on how to pay and secure the permit. If you come to their office in the morning, there’s a chance that the one who’s supposed to sign the permit (not the Mayor) is still out so you may have to return to their office in the after to get it. Note that upon payment, the office is basically giving you the permit to fly albeit without the actual copy of the permit. This happens when the signatory to the permit is, as mentioned, isn’t still around.

Step 4: Pay the fee to the cashier

As of the time of this writing, the permit fee to fly a drone per day is PhP1,600. Be sure to pay this at the cashier located at the 1st floor of the office. As for the breakdown of fee, please refer below:

  • Registration Fee: PhP500
  • Special Permit: PhP1,000
  • Certification Fee: PhP100

Step 5: (optional) Give your hotel concierge a copy of your permit and receipt

If you’re staying in a hotel, I recommend that you give a copy of your permit and receipt to the concierge and ask them to get a copy of it. You will need to original copy so be sure to get it from them. Be sure to bring your permit and receipt if you’re going to fly your drone in Boracay. When you start flying your drone, some enforcers may approach you and ask you to stop. They have the right to do so, but I recommend that you politely show them a copy of your permit. Note that the enforcers will ask you stop regardless of permit issued to you if you’re flying your drone in a densely populated area.

There you have it! Those are the simple rules of flying your drone. UAV Coach made a pretty extensive list of Do’s and Don’ts of flying a drone. Check it out here. Now, check out the video I made from my recent trip.

Let me tell you straight that this isn’t an article with political nature. This is neither about Huawei’s case against the US government about production ban, nor the company’s willingness to sell 5G chip to their rival company, Apple. This is all about the inspirations they took and their efforts to disrupt certain ways of doing things for the sake of innovation and progress.

I had the chance to exclusively meet and interview Mr. George Li, Country Manager of Huawei Consumer Business Group Philippines and Mr. Peter Guaden, Global Product Marketing Manager of Huawei Technologies during the official launch of Huawei P30 series in the Philippines. We talked about a number of things specific to Huawei, the products they launched and their future in the Philippines. Little did I expect that the interview will lead to new discoveries about Huawei and a renewed appreciation of the brand’s effort to reach out to more Filipinos.

Peter Guaden, Global Product Marketing Manager of Huawei Technologies

Redefining and rewriting rules in photography

The Huawei P30 series promises a lot of new improvements from previous iterations, and a plethora of new innovations that will delight Filipino consumers. As the series’ flagship product that’s focused on mobile photography, Huawei successfully attempted to break barriers in photography and help consumers to bring out their creativity while using the new smartphones.

New photography innovations like 10x hybrid zoom, 50x digital zoom and TOF on P30 Pro put more power to consumers and users to express themselves creatively without any hesitation or discomfort. During my interview with Peter Guaden, he said, “With the P30 series, we want to rewrite the rules of photography. So, there are a number of aspects where they take a rule over, rip it up and start it again. 50x zoom gives [users] versatility in focal length. Because if you think about how you use a DSLR camera, you carry around different lenses to snap photos in different focal lengths.” This, in essence, encapsulates the inspiration behind putting this kind of innovation on Huawei’s latest smartphone.

For Huawei, it’s all about being able to extend your creativity regardless of environment or situation. If you want to take a photo of a person parasailing from afar, but you don’t have super-zoom lens, DSLR and a tripod, you can easily do that with Huawei P30 Pro.

I have been using Huawei P30 Pro and I can attest that this phone has all the futures needed for someone who takes photography as one of his passions. When Huawei said that this phone can let you see what your naked eyes can barely see, they weren’t kidding. I snapped a few photos and shared it on my social media accounts, and the reactions I received reflect the same sentiments I had during my first day with the device.

50x zoom is barely scratching the surface of what the smartphone can do, and I cannot wait to share everything with you on my full review.

Apart from its insane zooming features, one of the technologies that I like about Huawei P30 Pro is its TOF camera. TOF, or also known as “Time of Flight”, is a process by which the camera – with its AI technology – measure the distance of the light from a particular background or subject to the TOF camera. The farther and defocused it is from lens, the more bokeh it will be generated on the output. It’s the simplest way to describe it, but for better appreciation, here are some sample photos I took. The new Huawei P30 Pro understands how far the background and subjects are, and creates a 3D map to determine the amount of depth of field it will generate.

Massive Step forward in DxO Rating

P30 Pro currently has the highest overall DxO rating, beating the Galaxy S10 Plus by 3 points. While some consider DxO process and result moot and academic, it is interesting to see how brands try to get the highest score possible in specific category. Based on the rating provided by DxO, P30 Pro is the best phone in terms of photography and at par compared to Galaxy S10 Plus.

Smartphone DxO Overall Photo Video
P30 Pro 112 119 97
P20 Pro 109 114 98
Mate 20 Pro 109 114 97
Galaxy S10 Plus 109 114 97

This gives further resolve to Huawei’s confidence to tell the world that they’ve got the best phone in terms of photography, and we just can’t help but agree with it in certain respects. There is still this sense of reservation because there are instances when I find Galaxy S10 Plus’ photos better and more natural than P30 Pro’s slightly saturated output. Vibrancy is more pronounced on P30 Pro if you let its AI be in full control of everything, and that has been the case since the P20 Pro. However, if you break away from automatic mode, and use both phones (S10+ and P30 Pro) in their full potential via Manual Raw mode, you will see how superior P30 Pro is.

The value you get outweigh the price you pay

When I talked to George Li, I congratulated him for the impressive prices of the new P-series. Even without 20% tax, the announced SRP of Huawei P30 and P30 Pro in the Philippines are far lower than Global SRP. According to Li, the P30 series is packed with premium features and innovations that outweigh the prices of the devices, and Huawei was even more willing to reward consumers who pre-ordered a unit. In fact, Huawei gave away Huawei Watch GT and Huawei Mediapad M5 Lite to those who pre-ordered last April 6, 2019 – the combined cost of these pre-order bonuses is PhP31,980.

Global SRP Conversation to Peso + 20% tax Confirmed PH SRP
Huawei P30 699 Euro PhP 49,064 PhP 36,990
Huawei P30 Pro 799 Euro PhP 56,084 PhP 50,990

A Full Ecosystem that Filipinos can Enjoy

With all these new products introduced during today’s official launch of Huawei P30 series, Huawei wanted to glaringly convey a message: Huawei has full ecosystem that you can seamlessly enjoy.

  • Huawei Matebook 13 Arrives in PH: Price Starts at PhP55,990: link
  • Huawei Watch GT Active Edition Arrives in PH: link

According to Li, the event and the freebies they provided to all those who pre-ordered are seen by the company as opportunities to introduce their products to Filipino consumers. Huawei may not have made Matebook available to Filipinos in in 2018, their decision to bring the upgraded ones this year makes more sense as its packed with features that make all Huawei devices seamlessly connected.

Less than a month after its unveiling in Paris, the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro have finally made their debut in the Philippines, along with the more affordable P30 Lite.

Huawei’s P30 series combine the company’s latest innovations – the powerful Kirin 980 makes its way to both the P30 and P30 Pro, while the P30 Lite boasts the capable Kirin 710 mid-range chip. The new P-Series devices are also equipped with improved optics. The P30 Pro to be specific, can do a stunning 50X digital zoom.

Huawei P30 Pro

Both the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro sport a new design with a gorgeous gradient finish, and pack FHD+ OLED displays. Thanks to Acoustic Display Technology, the screen can now be used as an earpiece.  As for screen sizes, you get 6.1-inches on the P30, and 6.47-inches on the P30 Pro. Huawei has also equipped both devices with an in-display fingerprint scanner, which now works up to 30% faster.

Huawei P30 Pro

The P30 Pro boasts a Leica Quad Camera system, which makes use of a 40MP main sensor, a periscope telephoto lens, an ultra-wide angle shooter, and a ToF camera.

Huawei P30
