Talented composer and all-around nice guy Bear McCreary, along with his BSG band compadres, is once again hitting the road with a live show of Galactica music.

The group will be doing three performances at the House of Blues in downtown San Diego on July 23, 24, and 25, right during the peak of Comicon craziness. Tickets are either $55 or $145 for VIP (which includes a backstage meet-and-greet, free copy of the new Caprica score CD, and a signing).

Personally, I think the VIP tickets are the way to go. Since the House of Blues is just blocks away from Comicon, it’s a good bet that other folks from the Galactica cast and crew may drop in.

Readers of this blog may remember my previous post about the BSG Season 2 CD Release party. These concerts promise to be equally awesome.

If you’re lucky enough to live near San Diego, this is definitely something you should thing about attending.

This just in from the Sci Fi Wire:

SCI FI Channel’s award-winning series Battlestar Galactica will move to a new timeslot starting Jan. 21, 2007: Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT, following the premiere of the new original series The Dresden Files at 9 p.m.

Is it me? Or does this seem pretty stupid?

In general, moving a show to different timeslot in the same season is a recipe for disaster, and often a sign of that something isn’t working (and even impending cancellation).

Now I’m sure BSG isn’t at risk of being cancelled, but it seems like SciFi would do better to bolster up their Friday evening programming, and move BSG back to 10pm.

One suggestion… how about re-airing Heroes in the time slot before BSG? Now that would be a Sci-Fi Friday!

UPDATE: Variety explains the motivation behind the move:

Sci Fi exec VP of programming Mark Stern said there are two reasons for moving the series.

“Broadcast and cable networks realized Friday was not such a bad timeslot, so it’s not the easy lay-up it once was,” he said.

In addition, he added, Sundays have bigger HUT levels and will be less competitive come January when football leaves the sked.

Frosh one-hour “Eureka” showed that “we can launch a show successfully on a new night beyond Friday,” Stern said. “Sunday is the home for premiere programming and for us, that’s ‘Battlestar.’ ”

Sci Fi Channel also will debut its detective drama “The Dresden Files” Jan. 21 at 9, where it will lead into “Battlestar.” Stern said the cabler is hoping that “Dresden” will bring in a new and broader audience to the latter.

BTW, HUT levels = households using television. My final thoughts: it’s a risky move, but let’s hope SCI FI rolls a “hard six”.

I often end up playing bartender when we all get together to watch BSG. This past weekend’s frak party was no exception, and in honor of the season 3 premiere I came up with what we decided to call the Callymotxo.

BTW, this drink is inspired by the Kalimotxo, pronounced /ˈkæliˈmotʃo/, which is a wonderfully refreshing Basque mixed drink made by mixing cheap red wine with Coca-Cola. Brilliant!

So here’s how to make one:

Two parts tequila

One part triple-sec

One or two parts cranberry juice

Fill with Coca-Cola

N.B.: substituting Diet Coke (or even Caffeine-Free Diet Coke) is perfectly A-OK.

It was a smash hit with our crew (though you’ll have to take their words for it as I can’t stand tequila myself).

<del>Share and Enjoy!</del> <ins>So say we all!</ins>

I’m just sneaking in to say I’ve been continuing to watch BSG, the wife and I are about halfway through season one and gushing isn’t gonna cover this one. You guys have heard me gush, so it won’t have any real meaning. You have to imagine Pauline Kael bursting into song, Lionel Barrymoore In “Wonderful Life” jumping up and jitterbugging with George Bailey, the Grinch’s heart growing three sizes… you gotta start down there to explain what it feels like up here. I’ll put it simply. The show is humbling. Not since the Matrix (the first one) have I had such a strong desire to go to writing school. I think it’s so passionate, textured, complex, subversive and challenging that it dwarfs everything on TV. Or in theaters. Or boho perfomances spaces. Stuff hanging in the Tate? Not as cool. I’m not gonna go on, because I have to get back to work and because if I really start, this post will crash the internet from sheer length. Only downsides are a) I was already having a crisis of confidence, thank you very much and b) I can’t go near any Sci-Fi mags for fear of spoilers. Apart from that, life is to be loved. The Gods are to be praised. Back to the job. -j.

And, btw, if you somehow missed the greatness that is Firefly, get thee to a videostore and rent the series DVD.

(Thanks to Ted for this one!)

I was lucky to be one of the very few fans that got tickets to Sunday night’s Official Battlestar Galactica: Season Two Soundtrack Album Release Show in Los Angeles.

I actually live in San Diego, not LA, but it’s close enough that I’d figure it’d be worth the drive up (and the more painful drive home… I didn’t get back until 2am Monday morning). And it’s Galactica, right?

The party was held at The Mint in Los Angeles

So, let’s get to it. The doors were supposed to open at 7pm, so I arrived around 6:30. Initially, there were only half a dozen fans, but the line eventually grew to maybe 20 or 30 people before we started entering the club.

The reason we all came

The Mint is actually a fairly small space on the inside. As you enter, there’s a bar to your immediate right, then to the left is the stage, a small open floor, and a few booths on either side of the stage.

Given the size of the venue and the makeup of the crowd, I’d say that most of the people who attended the party were friends of Bear McCreary’s and/or other people who work on Galactica. So fans who got tickets were pretty damn lucky.

BT4 starts the show up

Once everybody was settled in, the show got going. First up was lead singer BT4, backed by Bear McCreary, Paul Cartwright, and Johnny “Vatos” Hernandez with a set of five songs.

Bear McCreary and BT4

For those who don’t know, BT4 is one of several musicians who contributes to the BSG soundtrack, but he also happens to be the younger brother of Bear McCreary.

BT4’s best talent is his enthusiasm. With only one album so far, his sound is still a work in progress, but his voice is amazing and the last two or three songs in the set were strong. BTW, BT4 would like you to know that his website is bt4online.com — he kept shouting it out during the show, but in a funny way that didn’t annoy.

Surprise! Richard Hatch takes the stage!!!

When BT4 finished, Richard Hatch jumped up on stage to introduce the first set of video clips from the show. I’d seen him enter The Mint while we were all standing in line, but it was still an unexpected appearance on this part.

Richard Hatch / Apollo / Tom Zarek

Richard was, as always, a complete gentleman. Once on stage, he revealed that Tom Zarek is really the original Apollo… after Galactica 1980, Apollo disappeared and wound up in a fleet prison barge. He rotted there for 25 years and eventually became Zarek. “What 25 years in jail can do to a man…”

Video presentation (Part 1)

The first video clip sequence consisted of many of the themes Bear has written cut against some of the more spectacular moments from Season 2. I didn’t have a clear view of the screen, so I wasn’t able to take any notes about what was shown. But it was a moving reminder of everything the Galactica crew faced during the 2nd season.

The BSG Band

When it finished, the full Battlestar Galactica band, orchestra, group — whatever you want to call them — came on stage. This was basically everyone who played with BT4 plus some of the other musicians who work on the show (many of which were formerly members of Oingo Boingo.)

M.B. Gordy (also a Cylon?)

Two other guys I should mention are John Avila and Johnny “Vatos” Hernandez. These guys are awesome, but I wasn’t able to get good pics of either of them. (There are bios and pics on Bear’s website, though.)

The 1st set

For the first set, the group played five tracks. Since they didn’t have the full orchestra on hand, the songs naturally tended towards the percussion side.

1. Baltar’s dream (from Valley of Darkness)
2. Pegasus (from Pegasus)
3. Roslin and Adama (from Resurrection Ship, Part 1 and 2)
4. The Cylon Prisoner (from Pegasus)
5. Lords of Kobol (from Pegasus)

Video presentation (Part 2)

After the first set, the band took a break and the videos returned. The second video show featured Bear talking about his process a bit, and then short, funny interviews with each musician. BT4 played a funny song about working in outer space. Paul Cartwright appeared to accept cash for saying good things about Bear. Avila, Fernandez, and Gordy also appeared.

The 2nd set

1. Standing in the Mud (from Black Market)
2. Something Dark is Coming (from Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 1)
3. A Mess of Me (Raya) — Raya’s version of the ‘Roslin and Adama’ theme
4. Gina escapes (from Resurrection Ship, Part 2)
5. Black Market (from Black Market)
6. Wander My Friends (from The Hand of God — Season 1)

The 3rd track was a reworking of the Adama/Roslin theme by Raya Yarbrough. It was slower, more emotional, and had lyrics that more directly addressed the long-suspected love affair about Adama and Roslin.

CD signing

At the end of the set, Bear thanked everyone for coming and the band left the stage. Soon after, the band grabbed a table next to the stage and began signing CDs. The Season 2 CD isn’t actually on sale yet, but pre-release copies were available for $15.

As you can see, I got my CD signed by everyone who was there.

…

So, yeah, it was a pretty awesome night. If they have another party next year, I highly recommend going. (Hopefully, they’ll have a bigger venue next time.)

For those who are interested, I’ve uploaded all of my party photos to Flickr.

(And special thanks to Ken Charlson and his wife for hanging with me all night!)

UPDATE: Bear McCreary sent me a copy of the official set list, so the track names are all correct now. Thanks, Bear! (I’ve also added links to the Battlestar Wiki page for each episode).

As any Galactica fan knows, networking computers is a pretty bad idea.

So, when Lt. Gaeta was forced to network Galactica’s navigation computers to do an emergency FTL jump during ‘Scattered’, fans knew there’d be repercussions.

But, given BSG’s heavy geek fanbase, the resulting Cylon virus plotline — where a virus infected Galactica’s networked computers and immobilized the ship — seemed a bit contrived to many fans. Responding in a recent SciFi Q&A, Ron Moore gave his two cents:

We strive to keep things realistic without getting bogged down in too much technobabble or detail about it. We do have a very good, very knowledgeable technical advisor, who usually flags down errors of this sort, but in the end, it’s my call when to stay with the dramatic beat or change things around to keep it scientifically accurate. It’s a very subjective call and basically I listen to my own instincts as a writer, so if we’re doing something that pulls you out of the show because you know better, it’s probably a result of me taking the dramatic rather than the accurate path.

Makes sense to me, but the Hollywood North Report digs a bit deeper into this issue in this week’s BSG TechBlog.

Here’s the description from Amazon:

For forty years, the Twelve Colonies of Man experienced peace, united since the war against the man-made Cylons. The Cylons, mechanical beings created to perform the manual labor civilization required, were gone forever…or so humanity thought.

But in those years, the Cylons developed new Cylons that looked and acted like humans–with one goal in mind: to destroy all humanity! When they suddenly attacked the Twelve Worlds, humanity’s extinction seemed inevitable.

Only a single warship survived the massive attack: Battlestar Galactica, the oldest ship in the fleet, ready to be decommissioned and turned into a museum. Commander William Adama, himself set to retire, had but one course: to marshal the meager forces available, a ragtag crew of misfits and green recruits, to prevent their enemy from wiping out the last vestiges of the human race. But the Cylons, stronger, smarter, and driven to destroy their creators, may just be too powerful for them and all of humanity to survive.

Sounds familiar, huh?

The SciFi Channel has posted Ron Moore’s podcast commentary from the first half of the two-part ‘Resurrection Ship’ episode.

Most of this podcast centers around how ‘Resurrection Ship’ — which was originally conceived as a single episode — became a two-parter.

Here are a few of the more interesting highlights:

• The original version of ‘Resurrection Ship’ was 20 minutes long… a huge amount of extra footage, which eventually became part of the 2nd episode.

• RDM almost says “Picard” when talking about Adama’s motivation in a scene

• The ‘Case Orange’ codeword refers to a Navy battleplan during World War II

• The ‘Downfall’ codeword refers to a movie about the last days in Hitler’s bunker. (He’s probably referring to this film.)

• The “terminate Adama’s command” is an homage to a similar scene from Apocalypse Now where Harrison Ford gives instructions to Martin Sheen’s character.

• RDM reveals that Number Six was originally present when Baltar gave Gina some clothes, but they eventually cut her out of the scene because it muddle the emotional intent of the scene.
