Farmington Hills, Mich., Nov. 4, 2009 – Gale, part of Cengage Learning, announced today, that Gale PowerSearch and all InfoTrac products now offer MLA 7 citations. The Modern Language Association changed their citation format rules in the MLA Handbook, 7th edition, published in March, 2009. Gale is working toward upgrading all Gale products currently offering MLA 6 citations to MLA 7 citation format.

“We understand that easy access to standards-based source citations is an important part of the eResearch workflow process,” said Gary Pollack, Gale’s vice president of product platforms. “Citations strengthen the authority of the work and provide the reader with valuable information, indicating where he or she may learn more about the topic.”

“Within our upgraded products, the MLA 7 citation appears as the Source Citation at the bottom of each document and as the MLA 7 citation option through the Citation Tools path,” said Pollack. “Additional products will see the inclusion of MLA 7 throughout this next year.”

The most visible changes found in MLA 7 include:

• No more underlining — publication titles and the names of online products accessed are now italicized

• No more URLs — MLA no longer requires URLs, but encourages writers to provide a URL if the citation information does not easily lead readers to the source

• Continuous pagination — this is no longer an issue for scholarly journal citations; both volume and issue numbers are required, regardless of pagination

• Publication medium — since all documents are accessed from an online Gale resource, the citation will always include the medium “Web.” In addition, MLA has eliminated the requirement to include the name of the service (”Gale”) and the name of the subscribing institution

• New abbreviations — when certain metadata is missing, such as publisher or page numbers, there are suggested abbreviations to denote that fact

Farmington Hills, Mich., Oct. 27, 2009 – Gale, part of Cengage Learning, today announced the publication of Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of World Literature and Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of American Literature.

Each four-volume set covers authors from many periods and genres, building a broad understanding of the various contexts – from biographical to literary to historical – in which literature can be viewed. Each encyclopedia allows the reader to analyze an author’s work as a reflection of the heritage, traditions and experiences of the author’s personal life and the beliefs, events and lifestyles at the time.

“Many reference sources on literature contain only biographical with critical summaries of the author’s works. Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of World Literature and Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of American Literature expand on this and also include the study of literature moving from solely a study of literary criticism to include a review of contextual background,” said Meggin Condino, product manager at Gale. “New curriculum standards focus on the relevance of literature to students and their personal response. Beyond providing a contextual framework, these titles include questions to help students frame a response to literature or make connections between their modern lives – for example, a TV show such as Survivor – and literature from past times – such as The Lord of the Flies.”

Entries from Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of World Literature and Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of American Literature focus on the author and address his/her works and the context that surrounds them including:

Circumstances in the authors’ lives that are reflected in their work

Historical events affecting their work

Other authors and artists active at the same time

Common human themes – relevant globally – that appear in their work and what other works address those themes

How the author’s works were critically received over time

Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of World Literature and Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of American Literature are available in print and eBook format via the Gale Virtual Reference Library.

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Sept. 15, 2009 – Gale, part of Cengage Learning, and Library Media Connection Magazine today announced the three winners of the TEAMS Award — Teachers and Media Specialists Influencing Student Achievement.

The winners are Stony Creek Elementary, Noblesville, Indiana; Raymond Park Middle School, Indianapolis, Indiana; and Waterford High School, Waterford, Ohio.

The TEAMS Award was created to recognize the critical collaboration between teachers and media specialists in promoting learning and increasing student achievement. Nominations were evaluated based on:

Demonstrated collaboration between media specialists and teachers during the 2008/09 school year

Effective techniques that positively impact student learning and achievement

Support received from school leadership

Ability for others to replicate this best practice

“We continue to be impressed with the strong submissions for the TEAMS Award," said Marlene Woo-Lun, publisher of Library Media Connection. “At a time when budgets are more limited than ever, today's educators and administrators are developing creative programs to educate students, exposing them to new ideas and ways of thinking."

"The collaboration between media specialists and teachers on these projects is inspiring," said Dave Schroeter, Gale's vice president of K-12 /public library sales. "We received applications from both rural and urban schools, large and small institutions, and across the board the projects exhibit commitment, creativity and dedication by the teachers and media specialists involved."

The award includes $2,500 (U.S.) cash; Gale products; a one-year subscription to Library Media Connection; and an Educator's Professional Bookshelf from Linworth Publishing valued at approximately $880. In addition, the winners will be featured in an article in Library Media Connection in the 2009/10 school year. Awards will be presented at a special reception held in conjunction with the American Association of School Librarians Annual Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Stony Creek Elementary

Media specialist Gwen Tetrick and first-grade teacher Karen Duvall were concerned that students did not practice reading outside of school and began a reading incentive program to lure reluctant readers to the joy of reading. They used a Web site called Tumblebooks, featuring stories in a video format with text that is highlighted as a narrator reads the story. The program could be accessed from home or school and students also came to the media center during lunchtime to watch the stories. First through fourth-grade students participated in the program. To encourage parental involvement, a parent or significant adult was invited to join each student for a special breakfast in the media center.

Tetrick and Duvall also wanted to motivate fourth graders to read longer books and created the Hoosier Book Club, which included book talks and hands-on activities. The public library helped by holding monthly programs inviting each grade level to attend a story and craft program with their family.

Raymond Park Middle School
During a three-week study on persuasive writing, seventh grade language arts teacher Nick Grayson and media specialist Tonya Martin sought to make this learning experience highly interactive. The students participated in pre-writing activities and prepared presentations for a distance learning debate. Some of the students also participated in a global warming art contest sponsored by the United Nations.

The distance learning session allowed students to ask questions of a professional who was knowledgeable about their topic. Two high school classes from different regions, one in New York and one in Alberta, Canada, contributed different perspectives and offered suggestions for the presentations. The seventh graders were fascinated by the perspectives of the older students and benefited from their suggestions. After more research and fine-tuning, the distance learning debate was held with another class in Indianapolis.

Waterford High School
Library media specialist Carol Chase, English teacher Kelly Miller and business and technology teacher Roger French worked together to create “Beyond Boundaries: Student Activism from Waterford to the World” to educate students on global issues such as hunger, human rights and genocide. Students were divided into groups and became “experts” on an assigned global issue and corresponding organization. They researched their topics, created presentations and voted on which issue to persue.

Students planned a fundraising activity to benefit Kids Against Hunger. They also participated in teleconferencing with guest speakers involved with global issues including such topics as the global water crisis, human rights and global warming. A “service fair” was also held, with 30 exhibitors from local, national and international organizations talking with students about their mission and opportunities for volunteers.

The following schools received honorable mentions in the TEAMS Award competition:

Bonnie Holland Elementary School, Katy, Texas

Willow Avenue Elementary School, Cornwall, New York

Ballenger Creek Middle School, Frederick, Maryland

Westlane Middle School, Indianapolis, Indiana

Alpharetta High School, Alpharetta, Georgia

Spaulding High School, Barre, Vermont

Farmington Hills, Mich., August 27, 2009 – Gale, part of Cengage Learning, will support the Michigan Library Association’s September 10th rally to oppose state budget cuts to library funding. The rally, occurring on the steps of the state capitol, will encourage legislators in the House of Representatives to vote against library funding cuts proposed in the Senate passed budget.

“The Senate version of the state budget calls for slashing library funding to $7.5 million even though state law calls for it to be funded at approximately $15.4 million,” explained Gretchen Couraud, executive director, Michigan Library Association. “If these budget cuts are enacted, the entire statewide resource sharing and interlibrary loan system could collapse, eliminating the savings realized through group purchasing. This will put greater pressure on local communities to fund resources, or citizens will lose this information altogether. We are proud to have Gale joining us in this fight to keep these important services alive and invite librarians and library supporters across the state to take action.”

“With our headquarters located in Michigan, we see first-hand how our state is experiencing some of the highest unemployment in the nation,” said John Barnes, Gale’s executive vice president of strategic marketing and business development. “This is not the time to cut vital library services as more Michigan residents than ever are relying on the resources of their libraries for job-searching, skills development and life resources.

“Libraries across the state report increases in library use, a testament to how our libraries are a vital part of our state’s transitions to a knowledge-based economy dependent on technology and access to information,” continued Barnes. “We urge the legislature to protect library funding and continue to provide free access to valuable resources.”

Gale will provide bus service for more than 250 people from two Michigan locations: its Farmington Hills headquarters and Otsego County Library in Gaylord. Those interested in using the free bus service should register in advance at www.gale.com/michlibraries.

“Gale opposes the proposed budget cuts that threaten essential library resources, and we encourage librarians and library advocates alike to take advantage of the free Gale bus service and join us in Lansing for the September 10th rally,” said Barnes.

The Library of Michigan brings libraries together in many ways with statewide group purchasing and resource sharing, saving millions of dollars and benefiting all Michigan residents. Additionally, the Library of Michigan is responsible for the Michigan Electronic Library (MeL.org), which provides online resources to students, faculty, small businesses, job seekers and all other Michigan residents. Included in the free services are iMeL Tests and Tutorials providing online GED, police, fire and nursing certification tests and more. MeLCat, a statewide interlibrary loan system, allows residents free access to a wealth of resources from their homes, offices or libraries at tremendous cost savings. MeLCat also enables libraries to share books, CDs, DVDs and more from other communities.

More information about the proposed cuts and their impact is available at www.milibrariesforthefuture.com/.

Farmington Hills, Mich., July 14, 2009 – Gale, part of Cengage Learning, and Library Journal magazine presented the Queens Library with $10,000 for being the winner of the 2009 Library of the Year award, an annual award recognizing libraries that best demonstrate their commitment to library services. In addition to the cash award, the Queens Library was featured on the cover of the June 15, 2009 Library Journal and was honored with a reception during the American Library Association Annual Conference.

Queens Library is one of New York City’s three independent public library systems. Serving a population of 2.27 million people in one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the United States, the library offers over 25,000 free educational, informational, cultural and recreational programs each year. With a record 23 million items in circulation during fiscal year 2009, the Queens Library has one of the highest circulations of any public library system in the U.S. and one of the highest circulations in the world.

What sets Queens Library apart is its innovative programming. The New American Program encourages the use of free library services to enrich the lives of new immigrants and as a portal into American society. The Best Out Of School Time Program (BOOST) combines a safe after-school haven with homework help and after-school enrichment. The Family Literacy Programs teach English to immigrant parents and children together and provide parents with the tools they need to support their children’s educational needs at home. Through these programs and many others, Queens Library prides itself on providing tools to enrich the lives of those within its community.

“Gale is proud to support libraries through the Library of the Year Award,” said Patrick C. Sommers, president of Gale. “Each year we are impressed by the important work libraries are doing in their communities, and this year is no exception. I have had the pleasure of working closely with Queens Library for many years and they have always been innovative and creative in their outreach to their community with efforts such as the Adult Learner Program and the Teen Empowerment Initiative. We applaud the Queens Library for their hard work and commitment to the community, providing the tools, programs and support to get the most out of the library experience.”

“As a native New Yorker, I'm thrilled that Queens Library has been named the 2009 Library of the Year,” said Francine Fialkoff, editor-in-chief of Library Journal. “It's hard to think of a big city library being the heart of a community, but seeing the patrons line up outside any of the 62 branches waiting for them to open reinforces how central this library is to the people in Queens, New York. Their programs serve everyone from job seekers to career changers to new immigrants to those with low literacy skills. The list goes on and on. This award has always been a good luck charm for the libraries that have won it, and we hope that it will be one for Queens. So far, it seems to be working: it may have helped in the library's fight to drastically reduce the budget cuts being imposed by New York City from 20 percent to 8 percent.”

“On behalf of Queens Library’s staff, I am deeply honored by this recognition,” said Thomas W. Galante, Queens Library’s chief executive officer. “It means so much because it comes from our peers, the people who truly know how a great public library can and should lift up the community it serves. Our staff delivers world-class service every day. They enrich lives. I have had many proud moments during my Queens Library career. This is certainly a highlight. My sincere thanks to everyone at Gale, Library Journal and the awards committee.”
