Paul Slocum New Media Gallery
Anthony Goicolea Photography Gallery
Shark's Ink Paper Works Gallery

Take a look and make a plan to go see them!

* CLOSES JUNE 28,2009 *

Paul Slocum, New Media Gallery
Curated by Petra Sertic

Paul Slocum’s video You’re Not My Father is comprised of several reenactments of a short scene from the American television show Full House (1987–1995). Slocum recruited amateur participants through ads posted on Internet message boards and Craigslist and provided instructions on how to reshoot the scene with special attention to dialog and gestures. A musician as well as a visual artist, he creates an ominous effect in the video using sound loops, based on the scene’s original music. The work explores issues of defiance against authority, as presented by the characters, D.J. and Joey, and their different impersonators.

Anthony Goicolea, Photography Gallery
Curated by Cydney Payton

Related features the recent work of first-generation Cuban American Anthony Goicolea. Noted for his fantastic photographic narratives where he often acts out provocative charades and exploits, Goicolea now turns to inventing a conceptual family album. The exhibition is comprised of drawings and photographs that resemble portraiture from the mid-1800s, when the innovation of the tintype process transported image-making from the hand of the artist to the camera.

Shark’s Ink, Paper Works Gallery
Curated by Cydney Payton

This group exhibition features 82 prints by ten artists who have created works on paper with Master Printer Bud Shark of Shark’s Ink in Lyons, Colorado. The collection on view represents a survey of his studio since its inception in the mid-seventies. Shark has produced lithographs, monoprints, and woodcuts by renowned artists, largely from the US. The exhibition’s curator, Cydney Payton, has chosen to present artists who have worked with Shark for many years, engaging in a collaborative process that has resulted in works that are technically and visually innovative. The approach employed at Shark’s studio is unique to the creative process, as the artist and the printer work side-by-side to manifest beautiful works.

“Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century” is the only series on television to focus exclusively on contemporary visual art and artists in the United States, and it uses the medium of television to provide an experience of the visual arts that goes far beyond a gallery visit. Fascinating and intimate footage allows the viewer to observe the artists at work, watch their process as they transform inspiration into art, and hear their thoughts as they grapple with the physical and visual challenges of achieving their artistic visions.

The Gallery of Contemporary Art at UCCS and IDEA @ Colorado College are excited to announce the second presentation 1440 Minutes, a joint public program supporting Colorado contemporary artists. 1440 Minutes is a twenty-four hour art installation and exhibition event, curated around the theme of “Economic Creativity”. Great innovations arise in times of crisis; these innovations drive future economic and cultural growth. Economic Creativity invites artists to examine how, during this time of great change, we can – and should – use or re-use elements of our personal, cultural, and material past to re-envision a healthy, sustainable future.

Submissions from individual artists and collectives are now being taken to participate in the exhibition. Selected projects, which may include 2D, 3D, video, performance, installation, or conceptual pieces, will be exhibited in the FAC Modern. Artists will be responsible for installation, de-installation, and all associated labor and costs. Artworks must be able to be fully installed in under 24 hours. Installations will begin at 5 PM on Thursday, June 18 and must be completed by 5 PM on Friday, June 19, 2009. The reception will be held on Friday, June 19, 2009, 5-8 p.m.

Three cash prizes of $500 will be awarded by a panel of jurors.

Application and review process:
Proposals will be reviewed by curators of GOCA, and I.D.E.A. @ Colorado College, Caitlin Green and Jessica Hunter Larsen.
A recent article in the German weekly Die Zeit lamented how the new Moritzburg Museum in Halle shortchanges its own collection of East German paintings, one of the best in the country, “in a way that is almost shameful.” The article wondered whether the curators there were afraid “to revise overly quick judgments made in the years after the reunification of Germany.” That meant above all the verdict that East German art, like the whole Communist era, would be best forgotten.
Calgary-based Brazilian-American artist Rick Silva is a man of at least as many talents as identities. Perhaps this can be chalked-up to the fact that he studied under and often collaborates with pseudonymous hypertext pioneer Mark Amerika. But last week he unveiled a collaboration with himself in which he’s finally ready to disclose that he is the artist previously known as Abe Linkoln. Antlers Wifi merges the stylistic affinities with which both names have been associated.

the FAC MODERN’s exhibit, ATOMICELROY’S HOMETOWN, artist Atomic Elroy explores the myth and madness of his 40-year dysfunctional relationship with his residence and artistic career in Colorado Springs.

The exhibit is free and runs Jan. 31 – March 28. An Opening Celebration is planned in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk on Feb. 6 from 5-8 p.m. The artist will be in attendance.

Creating the mythical city “Hometown” within the galleries, Elroy uses video, installation and performance art to convey the complicated existence of an avant-garde artist in an all-American town. Highlights include an installation of the red spring Colorado Springs is named for, faux travelogues of tourist sites, parodies of local personalities in art, politics and religion, and a series of videos depicting Elroy’s take on the city.

Elroy describes his art as time-based media and says he “manipulates electrons and calls it art.”

“I like video because so much of the ‘art’ happens in the editing. Shooting is like sketching and the edit is where you get to paint.”

As you may have read, the former director of the Gallery, Mr. Gerry Riggs, died earlier this month.

Gerry directed the UCCS Gallery of Contemporary Art from 1991 to 2006 and also held the rank of assistant professor attendant in visual arts. He retired in 2006 and moved to Pagosa Springs where he engaged in a passion that was second in his heart to art, skiing. He died Sunday, Jan. 4, following an apparent suicide.

While at UCCS, Gerry was known for creating thought-provoking exhibitions and for providing new artists, including UCCS students and faculty, a venue to showcase their talents. His friendship with Dorothy “Dot” Heller was a part of Mrs. Heller’s decision to donate her home and property to the university, making possible the Heller Center for Arts and Humanities.

On Friday, January 23, 2009 a memorial service will be held in his honor at the Gallery from 5 – 7 pm. A scholarship fund has been set up in his name, if you wish to donate please contact the CU Foundation or visit http://www.cufund.org/.

I encourage you to visit http://atributetogerryriggs.blogspot.com/, a blog where friends have posted photos and written about their memories of Gerry.

It was a pleasure to be able to visit Colorado Springs and present these works with Diego and Cristian. The idea is to provide an insight into a generation of young Peruvian artists working with video in art, developing themes related to identity and hybridization, as well as to cinematic and cultural media languages. We encourage you to visit some sites that can provide you with more information about the artists and the issues some of the videos may raise.

The videos by Fernando Gutierrez presented in the exhibition are works that construct a number of ironic superheroes. www.huanchaco.com, contains information about Fernando Gutierrez, and the paitings and sculptures about Superchaco. His work on Superchaco began a few years ago and he plans to publish a Superchaco Comic very soon.

At www.cristianalarconismodes.blogspot.com you may find more works by Cristian Alarcón, including installation pieces and those for public spaces. The installation “Foto Monumental” may be of particular interest, as it deals with the politics of memory and local identity through the image of General Velasco Alvarado. If you are interested in knowing more about the context for the “Desplazados” series, you can visit the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Site, www.cverdad.org.pe.

We enjoyed meeting UCCS faculty and exchanging with students on different issues. We would like to thank Elissa Auther, Valerie Brodar and Caitlin Green for organizing this project and welcoming us to the Colorado Springs community.

Sincerely,
Mauricio Delfin

Presented by Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA), the lecture will feature Cristian Alarcón Ismodes, Diego lama, Fernando Gutierrez and curator Mauricio Delfin. They will speak about contemporary video, digital media and installation work, as well as current curatorial practices in Perú. All three artists will be exhibited in a show curated by Delfin at the Gallery of Contemporary Art (GOCA) from December 12, 2008 – February 14, 2009, curated by Maruicio Delfin.

Artist Biographies

Fernando Gutierrez “Huanchaco” develops the story of Superchaco, a tragic peruvian superhero. Through paintings, videos and animations. Superchaco helps us reflect on the new urban and global cultures as they affect visions and aspirations in emerging societies. Influenced by comics and pop culture, Huanchaco steals, recycles and subverts new but established symbols of consumer culture, rendering them “Peruvian’ in all their contradiction and reconfigured symbolic content.

Cristian Alarcón Ismodes received a B.A. in Fine Arts from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He has won numerous awards for his painting and video animation work. He has exhibited extensively in Peru, Spain, and France. His work comes from a preoccupation with the Peruvian rural provinces and their experience with the recent history of violence. His grotesque creature, The Cur-rata, literally eats alive the naïve yet loaded referent of Mickey Mouse, as naturally most Peruvians eat the traditional baked guinea pig or cuy; a mediated circle of food and ingestion of symbols and ideologies.

Diego Lama was the first artst to receive a degree in video art from the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes Corriente Alterna in 2003. He has participated in numerous exhibitions and international biennials including the Festival Videoex, Switzerland; the World Wide Video Festival, Amsterdam; Video Art in Perú; Fundación Carolina, Spain; and Video Brasil. His work examines conflict and violence from a very personal and physical perspective addressing essential themes such as love and death, he provides pieces of exquisite yet sordid textures, sublime and twisted characters whose internal conflicts rise and deform what is to be expected.

Curator Mauricio Delfin is an anthropologist, video artist, and director of Realidad Visual, a new media association for cultural development and artistic advancement. He produces and directs the International Festival of Video/Arte/Electrónica, which takes place in five cities in Peru. He has directed and produced various video documentaries and several new media art projects, working on a number of co-productions with local and international creators. Delfin shows an interest on the relationship between art and politics, new approaches to artistic cooperation, and issues of culture and identity in contemporary Peruvian art.
