Event Description: Moody Gardens will soon offer Venturing, a new initiative to promote education and awareness about the environment through variety of conservation activities.

"Promoting conservation is one of our important missions, and this is a new approach to helping young people learn about the world we live in," said Moody Gardens Volunteer Coordinator Maria Miller. "The Venturers can decide what they want to get out of it, and we are here to provide guidance that they need to achieve their goals.”

Through the Venturing program at Moody Gardens, the youth will learn how natural environments function and how human beings can manage their behavior and ecosystems in order to live sustainably. Participants are able to focus on the conservation topics of their own interests, including coastal restoration, rain forest conservation and protection of living inhabitants such as birds and coral reefs. There are also opportunities to attend Venturing camps and trips. The members will have the support by trained Moody Gardens advisors and consultants, who are knowledgeable in environmental leadership.

Designed for men and women between the ages of 14 and 21, Venturing is a national program chartered by the Boy Scouts of America. Each chapter or Venture Crew focuses on a special interest of choice such as computer science, medicine, engineering or conservation, and is sponsored by community organizations such as local schools, churches, businesses and government.

Interested teens and young adults are invited to attend the Moody Gardens Venture Crew Open House from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, Dec. 7. About Islander by Choice...

If you've ever visited Galveston Island, you've felt the magnetic crawl that keeps you coming back. It is a unique place that breeds attitude and eccentricity from its historic homes and downtown to the Seawall and its colorful characters. You cannot visit the Island without wanting to take something away with you that embodies the attitude and strangeness of this odd little sandbar. An island in every sense of the word, Galveston has survived and re-imagined herself time and again through the passion and ingenuity and sometimes delusion of its residents.

The usual seashell souvenir is great at first. It's shiny. You can hear the ocean when you hold it up to your ear. But, eventually, it gets put away in a box. The same goes for the generic souvenir t-shirt that finds itself serving as a dust rag or car shammy by the end of the summer.

Five locals have started a new Galveston label promoting the Island attitude and lifestyle that promises to be more than your typical hack souvenir: it's a piece of Galveston's witty neighbors and quirky history. Together, they formed Islander By Choice (IBC) and have unveiled their first t-shirt for IBCs, BOIs, and visitors alike. Islander By Choice was started by five friends who wanted original Galveston t-shirts that captured the character of the Island with style in mind.

And these aren't your typical Big Beefy T's.

Capitalizing on a kooky sense of wit and wisdom and some forgotten facts, they want to promote Galveston pride and a truer spirit of the Island. What began as local friends joking in a shop one summer has now launched with their first t-shirt: the IBC staple shirt. And don't worry - visitors and locals alike, including Born On the Islanders, will want to rock this shirt across the Island.

The five IBC's, Adrienne and Michael Culpepper, Lauren and Kevin Scott, and Will Wright, have joined together to start this Galveston business. Launched on the 4th of July, Islander By Choice wants you to join this island revolution. To check out the premier IBC shirt, visit www.ibcgalveston.com, where you can also order your very own piece of Galveston pride and get information on upcoming products. Now you can do more than shop local. You can wear local.

School Begins at Moody Pre-School

When: Tue Sep 2, 2008 8:30am to 9:30am
