The game itself is rather simplistic in terms of premise yet so charming, brilliant and addictive that it will have you coming back for more and more.

The game sets out a mass of land split into defined sections, equally handed out between the teams. Inside each of these sections is a group of up to eight soldiers and a flag. The idea of the game is to battle you opponent and seize as much of their land as possible until total domination is yours. During each players turn they have various actions they can perform. Moving soldiers from one area to another, calling reinforcements (this ends your turn), or attacking an enemy.

When you choose to attack you will be taken to a battle scenario where your soldiers will be standing next to the enemies troops. Now is where the word play comes in. You will be handed a conundrum of up to eight letters and you will need to create the longest or highest scoring word to win the battle. Another key to winning the battle is to have more soldiers than your opponent as every soldier is worth another letter. Therefore if you go into battle with only three soldiers you will only be able to create a maximum of a three letter word.

The letter tiles are numbered similarly to Scrabble but Quarrel is so much more fun than the classic board game. And you can forget about putting any old random jumble of words together as Denki have teamed up with Harper Collins to ensure that the dictionary is of the highest order. What’s more after each battle the dictionary offers the full definition of the words created.

Quarrel has a simplistic yet appealing visual style. Utilising XBLA avatars as your players and some rather cute soldier characters the look and feel of the title is endearing but never wows. Yet it serves its purpose completely and the animations of the soldiers using the word tiles to vanquish foes is various ways is great fun. The islands where you battle for supremacy are varied and interesting but really they are just backdrops to the main game board.

The games sound is of a surprisingly high quality. The music is a neat blend of Latin American, Lounge and Easy Listening created by Jack’s Hoose Music who have created soundtracks for Amplitude, Pop Idol, and even Enter The Matrix. The soundtrack sits nicely with the feel of the game and adds atmosphere.

Quarrel only works locally as a single player game, namely due to needing to keep your tiles secret. However online offers a chance to play multiplayer for up to four contestants at once.

Overall Quarrel is an excellent blend of two quite different gaming styles and it works triumphantly. It is bright fun and hugely addictive and what’s more you might even be learning stuff at the same time, shhh don’t tell the kids!

Some bloke from Microsoft in France (Cedrick Delmax, Microsoft France Marketing Director) has come out and sort of denied that we will see the next Xbox this year at all. “Xbox 360′s cycle is not at all finished. The proof is that we don’t see the logic in cutting the price this year. E3 is still premature. What’s certain is that there’ll be nothing new in 2012,” he said. Whether he means nothing new will be out for sale or whether there will be nothing new in terms of information is till open to debate.

Should he mean that we will see nothing of the new machine at all this year it would certainly seem that Microsoft and Sony have their hands twitching over their holsters to see who reaches for their guns first. But this is a peculiar stance for the console manufacturers to take if you ask us. Both PS3 and Xbox 360 are showing their age, especially when compared to the latest PC hardware. Both have lost the ability to wow players as they did at the start of their cycle and the PS3′s legendary extra power over the 360 has never really materialised.

With Nintendo already a long way down the line to launching the terribly titled Wii U and with the other two watching on could we see a swathe of successful Wii U features hurriedly squeezed into the new machines?

Perhaps this is all a bluff and in fact either Sony or Microsoft will indeed unveil some new tit-bits about the next gen this year.

It could be that the technology still hasn’t advanced enough to get the wow factor required for people to shell out the best part 0f £500 again and that the longer they leave it the greater the impact will be.

Whatever the reasons behind the wringing of the current gen till it gasps its last breath the next gen is going to have to be considerably impressive when the bods finally pour warm water on this console cold war that is freezing all of our nuts off!

Next to step onto the dance floor is O Games’ Get up and Dance (not to be confused with ’90′s hardcore label Shut Up and Dance) and we have been strutting our stuff to see how it fares.

The first thing that grabs your attention in Get up and Dance is the choice of music. This is an eclectic mix of old and new and differing styles. Personal tastes not withstanding there is probably something here for everyone, from Barenaked Ladies to Billy Ray Cyrus and Rizzle Kicks to Elton John and everything in between. Whilst the eclectic music means a choice for almost everyone it limits the choice if you have a certain style of music you are interested in. Still there is a large roster (over thirty) of songs so there must be something you like, if not well, tough. The plus side is that the dance routines change significantly depending on the style of music played.

The game features four game modes, Get Up and Dance, Get Up and Party, Get up and Dance Group and Shape Up. Get Up and Dance mode is just the standard dancing game for up to four players.Get Up and Party mode has lots of mini-game style challenges that you will need to compete with friends either in solo or in teams to win.

Get up and Dance Group puts you in dance competitions where you are judged on your performance.This is highlighted by a bar that moves to the right if you are doing well and to the left if you are not. It is also linked to sounds of a crowd, do well and they cheer and clap. Do badly and they boo and laugh. If the bar gets to all the way to the left its game over.

Shape Up, is a fitness mode that tracks how many calories you have burned during the exercise. You can even set your own fitness goals in these section.

So the game modes offer a few innovations but as with any dancer all that matters is how it performs on the floor. Well, Get up and Dance is a real mixed bag. The dance screen is set to a background of the actual video to the track you are dancing to. This in itself is both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that it draws eyes from watchers to the screen rather than my gyrating blubber but it also adds to the confusion that is the game screen. Scrolling down the left side of the screen are static stick-like characters that are supposed to show you what dance move is going to be coming next. Not only do these characters not really help in terms of knowing what the next move will be it is impossible to follow both this and the actual dancer in the middle of the screen. And oh my God who decided on the look of the dancers? Looking like something out of Ronald McDonald’s acid trip these odd figures lead you through some of the most complex and difficult dance routines of any dance game out there.Yes the choreography is excellent but seriously getting to know the steps is not only a trial of your dancing prowess but also your memory. The steps are not repeated for long before changing, meaning the moment you have worked out a step it moves to the next one. It will take you a long time to master these dance moves but you will look pretty awesome when you do. You can rehearse different routines where the game breaks sections of the songs down for you to practice but it would have been nice if you were able to slow the moves down to really get to grips with them.

The Shape Up mode changes this up slightly adding a much more aerobic exercise feel to proceedings. This means that moves are easier to learn and repeated on a much more frequent basis. And it really does work in terms of burning calories, I had to drink five beers just to get back to my perfect weight!

That leads nicely onto the controls. Playstation Move allows for some very tight controls in Get up and Dance but the very nature of the way it works means that cheating is also very easy. For example you barely have to move your feet if you don’t want to. Instead you can just follow the arm movements to still get great scores.

Overall this game will slot into an already crowded genre. It offers a few interesting ideas that stand it apart from the crowd but whether they are enough to prise fans away from more recognised brands remains to be seen.

We had not heard much about the game but if this trailer is anything to go by Resident Evil could once again be king of the horrors.

“We want to give our oldest and most committed fans an option to go back to our roots,” said Ken Levine, Creative Director of Irrational Games. “In 1999 Mode, gamers face more of the permanent consequences of their gameplay decisions. In BioShock Infinite, gamers will have to sweat out the results of their actions. In addition, 1999 Mode will demand that players pick specializations, and focus on them.

“I’m an old school gamer. We wanted to make sure we were taking into account the play styles of gamers like me. So we went straight to the horse’s mouth by asking them, on our website, a series of questions about how they play our games. 94.6 percent of respondents indicated that upgrade choices enhanced their BioShock gameplay experience; however, 56.8 percent indicated that being required to make permanent decisions about their character would have made the game even better.”

In addition to these permanent decisions, 1999 Mode will feature demanding weapon, power, and health management. The mode also takes a much harder stand on player respawning, sending the gamer directly to a “Game Over” screen if he or she lacks the resources to be brought back to life.
