The History Of Nintendo Game Consoles

The history of video game consoles goes back through the 1970's, but many people believe that the Video Game Era properly began with the dawn of Nintendo game consoles in the form of the Nintendo Entertainment System. They're probably right. Ever since the launch of the NES, video games have been propelled forward to greater heights of graphics, gameplay, and story immersion. Video games aren't just games anymore; they're cinematic experiences. And a lot of that is thanks to the Nintendo game consoles that pushed the industry forward.

With that in mind, let's briefly review the history of Nintendo gaming systems. (Note: for a very thorough review of gaming history, check out TheGameConsole.com)

1985: The Nintendo Entertainment System

Nintendo was around in Japan earlier than 1985, but it was the Nintendo Entertainment System that really made Nintendo's mark on the video game world and blew the industry open. Backed by the Super Mario Bros. franchise - released on the Nintendo Famicom in Japan that same year - this version would simply become known as the "Nintendo." By 1986, the NES would reach a much larger scale and start outselling its competitors - by a lot.

1991: The Super Nintendo

Also known as SNES, the Super Nintendo system expanded on the franchises established by the original Nintendo. More buttons were added to the controller - which was now round - and graphics were expanded to provide for a greater range of experiences. Instead of looking like computer screens, the video games now looked more like cartoons, providing a smoother gaming experience and more immersed video game reality.

1996: The Nintendo 64

The next great leap took place with the Nintendo 64. Although the video game market had expanded by this time and the industry had become more competitive, the Nintendo 64 brought its 3-D graphics and settings to a continually growing audience. Popular games like "GoldenEye" also contributed to the expanding world of the first-person shooter, which is now one of the most popular types of games available on the market.

Nintendo has continued to strike a chord with audiences and reach a new generation of gamers with its Nintendo Wii, which wisely sidesteps the strides made by Microsoft and Sony by engaging the player in a more proactive way. Together with Wii bundles, the Nintendo Wii reaches a new audience of adults by providing "games" like the Wii Fit, further expanding the genre of interactive gaming into a more serious role.

At some point, old video game consoles become cool again. There's something in the DNA of each console that makes it too "old" at one point, and then "retro" at another. Having ascended its way to the world of elite Xbox's and PlayStation's, the video game world still has room for those classic game consoles that somehow, after all these years, never seem to get old. Here are some throwbacks that are a must-have in any die-hard fan's collection.

Atari

There are plenty of versions of the Atari, and as you'll find at TheGameConsole.com, many of these versions were around in the 1970's. In other words, these were in fact your father's video games. Classics like Atari PONG or the Atari 2600 were pioneers into the world of electronic gaming, and few could have guessed that the little white dots on the screen would evolve into the cinematic-style games we have today.

Buy an old Atari PONG for your collection - you'll love the retro 70's controller and can show the game off to guests. You don't have to be a child of the 70's to enjoy the throwbacks.

Nintendo Entertainment System

The familiar gray box of the NES is perhaps the best throwback of all, a great reminder of the leap in gaming that took place when Nintendo introduced us to the Super Mario Brothers.

It's odd to think that an idea like "removable cartridges" was a new concept back then, but in the mid-1980's, it was a revolution that sparked a new industry. Sure, you probably had to blow the dust out of the games, but even today's CD's aren't always totally reliable, either.

The simple Nintendo controller is also an icon of the old video game consoles, an odd-to-hold rectangle that didn't fit as comfortably in our hands as today's controllers, but still has a special place in our hearts.

Other Retro Gaming Systems

The original PlayStation isn't exactly a "retro" choice yet - in fact, it's still stuck in that not-old-enough-yet-to-be-cool-again category. But a few recognizable consoles are quickly becoming nostalgic gems, like the SEGA Genesis or the Nintendo 64, which still has classic games like Mario Kart 64 that are more fun than their current-generation incarnations.

Old video game consoles may be old, but that doesn't make them worthless. A shrewd customer knows that buying game consoles that pack entertainment without a similar increase in price is a great option to purchase. Other video game lovers can't resist the nostalgic throwbacks to when video games were new.

Despite what you may have heard, cheap game consoles aren't make-believe like unicorns or leprechauns. They really do exist here in the real world. But since they can be hard to pin down, a really cheap game console has become something of an urban legend. It doesn't have to be! Instead, starting right now, you can use the strategies and tactics financially-inclined gamers have been using all this time. Let's take a look at some of the most popular strategies for buying game consoles without breaking your bank:

Saving up to Buy a Game Console

Game consoles don't get any cheaper just because you're saving up for them, but having the ability to save for a few months rather than splurge all at once is a skill you'll want to hone nonetheless. It's one thing to buy a $400 game console in one single swipe of the credit card; it's quite another to save $100 for a few months in order to buy it later.

If you can delay satisfaction like this, then you have what it takes to buy a cheap game console. The name of the game is patience: you won't find a cheap game console right away, but if you have the patience to save, you'll have the patience to find the best deals out there.

Older Consoles

A quick gander at The Game Console will show you that buying a cheap game console doesn't have to be limited to what is available in the front aisles today. You can drastically cut your video game budget down to size if you're willing to forgo a little technology to get your game fix in: buying a PlayStation 2 instead of a PlayStation 3, for example, will cost less but still has plenty of modern-style games to enjoy.

What's great about older consoles is that they'll also be available to buy used, whereas current game consoles won't be such popular "used" purchases. A quick search of Game Consoles on eBay will yield plenty of used, older game consoles that have their prices dramatically reduced. You sacrifice a little in the "cool" factor, but since when does owning the latest video game console automatically make you cool?

Buying Xbox's and PlayStations

We all know about the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, two of the most advanced game consoles out there. But if you take a step back in either generation, you'll find you can enjoy many of the same games without the same initial investment.

Buying cheap game consoles isn't about discovering a secret hidden black market; it's about taking to the traditional market and using a little creativity and, yes, a little sacrifice to get a game system in your home without going bankrupt.

The Wii is an entertainment system that demands you be proactive - on minute you're dancing on the floor, and the next you're belting out a song in Rock Band. But being proactive isn't just about the way you play; it's about the way you acquire your games in the first place. You have to pick out a Wii bundle that features all of the games, extras, and equipment you need - without getting buyer's remorse. This article will explain how to do accomplish just that.

Wii Bundle Options

Okay, so you own a Wii and you want to acquire a Wii bundle. Where do you start? If you don't have a specific game in mind, you'll want to consider all of the different types of bundles out there.

For example, the Wii Fit bundle is perfect for the individual who bought the Wii looking to become more active, especially if you live in cold weather and don't like to get outside of the house for your activity. The going price for this bundle is around $400-$500, but if you do some creative work online, you may be able to find it for even cheaper.

The Wii Rock Band bundle includes drums, a guitar, and a microphone so that you and your friends can enjoy a rousing song in the comfort of your basement.

Finding a Discount on Wii Bundles

When many people see the price of Wii bundles, they think one thing: "how can I get them for cheap?" There are generally two ways to do it.

First, you can try a Wii bundle package that is paired together with another package and presented at a discount price - some people find that this is worth the reduced price because they wanted both bundles anyway. For other people, it's not a great option because they have no interest in the other Wii bundle in the package.

Next, you can look for used Wii bundles, whether you're dealing directly with a friend who's gotten sick of their Wii bundle, or with someone online who is simply looking to unload theirs. Sites like Craigslist or eBay are good - and you can use this site to find the best game console deals going on eBay right now.

PS3 Deals - A Quick Guide To Finding The Best Price

For a lot of people, buying a PS3 isn't such a challenge - simply put it on the card and bring it home. But in today's economy, finding PS3 deals has become a much bigger priority simply because we don't have as much money as we used to have!

There's just one problem: many people think that they deserve "deals" simply by virtue of someone else's work. They want the deal without the effort. That's not what this article is advocating. Instead, if you want to find the best PS3 deals, then earn the money you save through research and a little patience. Here's how to get started.

New vs. Used

Sure, you can buy a new PS3 and enjoy the factory-fresh quality of a newly minted entertainment system. And you can pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars for the privilege. But if you want the same experience at a fraction of the price, buying used is the way to go.

Don't know anyone with a used PS3 to sell you? That's fine; simply head on over to our Playstation 3 Deals On eBay Page (we've already done the search for you) and take a gander at the different prices you see. There are plenty of options for PS3 deals - and if you know how to fix them, you may even be able to purchase one for less than $100.

Games Included

Though it may not seem like a deal, buying a PlayStation 3 with games included can save you money in the long run. Would you rather buy a PlayStation 3 separate from the video games, or buy a bundle that includes games for a little extra? Depending on the games you want to buy, buying the bundle could actually save you money. Check out this list of PlayStation3 bundles if you're looking for PlayStation 3 and specific games.

Finding the Best Deals

For Play Station 3 consoles we list here from eBay, your best bet to find good deals is to follow two rules of thumb: have an idea of what you're willing to pay for (an upper limit), and do research.Knowing what you want to pay for might help you as you gander at the list of PlayStation 3's currently available. If you don't see one in your price range right away - at least, not a quality one - then wait a few days and check back here again for a better deal.

Examine how the list has changed and see if any new PS3 deals meet your criteria. And when it comes to your research, make sure you're buying from sellers who have good eBay feedback. It's also a good idea to check prices online to make sure you're actually getting a deal.

If you love your Xbox 360 and can't get enough of games like Call of Duty 2: Modern Warfare, then it probably goes without saying that you'll want to take good care of your Xbox. Of course, like a car, the more miles you put on it, the less likely it is to work the way you want it to. In order to escape this hardcore gamer's paradox, you'll have to take care of your Xbox 360 the right way, maintaining it well and making sure that you can squeeze a lot more mileage out of it. In this article you'll find some tips for doing just that.

First, check out wikiHow's nice little guide to getting your Xbox 360 fixed for free by Microsoft. If your Xbox is beyond "maintenance" needs and you simply want to get it fixed, that will make a good resource for you to explore.

A Few Handy Tips:

Keep all receipts/boxes/etc. In order to make sure that your Xbox 360 can be fixed when it needs it, it's best to have your receipt and box so that you can verify its validity to Microsoft. Be sure to check out the link above for more advice on getting your Xbox repaired.

When you're done playing, keep your Xbox and Xbox equipment in a safe, protected place. If you keep your Xbox out in a high-traffic area in your home, then you're just asking for disaster. Someone might be looking to get a drink of water at night and could trip and fall, breaking some of your equipment. Start the habit of putting all of the equipment away in a safe place when you're not using your Xbox.

Make sure you have a cooling device attached to your Xbox. A cooling device on the back of your Xbox 360 helps it avoid overheating on those extended Call of Duty marathons, so make sure that you've got the equipment to handle the kind of demand you'll be placing on your console.

Keep your Xbox 360 free from dust and clean it regularly. It's a good idea to store your Xbox in a place where there won't be too much dust. Make sure to dust and clean it regularly so that you can avoid gunk buildup.

If you make sure you develop a good habit and routine for maintaining your Xbox, you might be surprised to see how well it runs for a long time. One key point to remember: your routine doesn't have to be very time-consuming, it just has to be consistent.

With all due respect to the Nintendo Wii, many people today believe that the best game console available is either one of the two major players: the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. But what exactly makes these consoles the best? Does the secret lie in their similarities, or in their differences? In this article, we're going to match them up head-to-head to find out.

There are a lot of variables to tackle when you're talking about a game console. Factors like price, visual graphics, gameplay, game choice, and overall enjoyment can't be left out. Hardcoreware.net took the time out to review both of the consoles after initially declaring the Xbox the clear winner. So what factors did they look at?

They looked at how the consoles changed over the course of time. Any technology junkie knows that a release of a piece of hardware is not final; updates happen all the time, prices change, and new hardware comes out that adds to the original. Over time, the prices on both the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 dropped, with the Xbox getting the slight edge.

When it comes to graphics, the debate between the two consoles is heated. Many Playstation enthusiasts believe that they have the market cornered on graphics, but the Xbox 360 is as smooth and has the same kind of processing power. Hardcoreware.net gave an edge to the Xbox again, but also noted that the Playstation 3 has a lot of potential.

What about the the features both consoles enjoy today? Both consoles play DVD's - if you're going to buy something for a college dorm room, it should either start with an "X" or end with a "3." The quality of both gaming consoles has made both of them popular amongst people even in their 30s and 40s.

Overall, you can't go wrong with either console, but this article has to give the edge to the Xbox 360, a slick gaming tool with a great online feature (Xbox Live). If you want a total gaming experience, the Xbox 360 is perfect for you. Will you miss out on a lot if you own a Playstation 3? Of course not. Well, you will miss out on one thing: having an Xbox 360.

The quibbles with the Xbox 360 Elite are minor, as you can see in this CNet review. There are some changes that could have been made, such as expanding the amount of USB ports allowed, but ultimately this doesn't detract from the overall experience of gaming on the Elite. Yes, you'll still see some familiar Xbox traits, like that huge cooling fan, but if you've enjoyed previous Xbox's, you probably won't mind.

And that's the bad news! The good news is that the Xbox 360 Elite is a definite upgrade over the 360 console, running more smoothly, efficiently, and boasting the same high-quality selection of games. In PCWorld's Xbox 360 Elite review, you'll find that the hard drive has expanded from 20 GB to 120 GB, a major upgrade to be sure. For ultimate gamers who found the previous limited hard drive to be constricting, this may be worth the price tag alone.

You'll even notice that the Xbox 360 Elite makes room for HD DVD's, running them smoothly and effectively, making you wonder why anyone would ever own a DVD player when they can simply buy a game console.

If you already have a problem with the Xbox 360, there's nothing to suggest you won't have a problem with the Elite. Not everything is fixed in the Elite, which runs like an enhanced version of the 360. But isn't exactly what the title suggests?

All in all, knowing why the Xbox 360 Elite works so well is understanding the entire Xbox series. It's a pure game console that doesn't try to expand beyond its basic abilities; instead, it works on those specifications and optimizes them well. Whether you're watching the video graphics of NCAA '10 or enjoying Season 3 of The Office on DVD, you'll be glad you went ahead and made the leap to the next level of Xbox 360 Elite. Watch for falling prices and you'll be able to enjoy the same quality experience for a more affordable price.

Four Playstation 3 Features You Don't Want to Miss

In the game console wars, the Xbox and the Playstation reign supreme. But even if you drop the old Xbox vs. Playstation rivalry, you have to admit that both consoles are worthy contestants, and there's a reason they're both on top. And there's a reason the Playstation 3 is considered one of the elite consoles available on the market right now: it's simply one of the best user experiences for the buck. But what exactly makes it so great? Let us count the ways, four times:

1. Built-in WiFi.

Sure, we're in the age of iPhones and advanced gadgetry, but it's still great to see built-in WiFi from your game console, allowing you to enjoy access to the internet while you slink down in your eBay-bought gaming chair. As CNet notes, maybe the Playstation 3 doesn't have the multiplayer of Xbox live, but that doesn't mean you can't connect to the world from your living room.

2. The Hi-def Blu-ray Player.

For you Blu-ray enthusiasts who can't resist a crystal-clear movie, the Playstation 3 is a great game console for you. Heck, after prices continue to drop, you might even consider buying the Playstation for its Blu-ray capabilities, with the added bonus that it plays video games, as well. If you have a stellar television that can show the true quality of these Blu-ray movies, you'll want to make the most of it with a Playstation 3.

3. News and weather via Life with Playstation.

Sure, we mentioned the WiFi, but how can you resist hearing the news and weather when you're playing your morning video game? If you're like us, you can't, and that's exactly what's so tantalizing about a console like the Playstation 3.

4. An expanded hard drive.

With a 60 GB hard drive, the Playstation 3 has plenty of space for you to tinker with. If you're a true Playstation enthusiast, you should have no problem trying to fill it up! The 60 GB come standard while the Xbox 360 needed an upgrade to get up to 120 GB of space. Shouldn't plenty of space come with the first version?

Bottom line: you'll enjoy the Playstation 3, even if you're a longtime Xbox 360 user. Do some of the features overlap? Of course, but there's also a lot here that you'll like, whether you prefer Sony or Microsoft.

If you've been following along, we're checking out the latest Madden NFL video game for XBox and PlayStation. As one of the world's most popular video game franchises, Madden NFL games have always had expectations. How does this one measure up?

Problems and Disappointments

In Part One of this review, we looked at a few problems with the Maden NFL audio, mentioning that Madden's producers always seem more concerned with realistic animation than with the rest of the game. So what's up with the rest of the game, and what happens when you want to enter franchise mode?

For the uninitiated, franchise mode is the part of the game that allows you to be the general manager of your favorite team, signing players, drafting rookies, and making team decisions for game day. The franchise mode in recent editions of Madden NFL has been disappointing over their 2004/2005 glory days. You'll see that EA Sports did a little bit of thinking for this year's franchise mode, but there don't appear to have been any major overhauls.

That's a bit of a shame, because Madden video games have previously been great for "franchise mode" warriors. The emphasis these days seems to be on realism, but the reality of being an NFL general manager isn't always something you want to indulge in.

Overall Impressions

Overall, this video game is being reviewed as an improvement over last year's Madden, which was not a terrible entry into the franchise. But since the Madden franchise is one of the most beloved video game franchises around, it takes a lot to impress us.

Problems with the commentary and an over-emphasis on game play still seem to plague the franchise, which doesn't quite seem interested in becoming the comprehensive, complete football game it could be. Some people who are more interested in the coaching and strategic areas of football might be encouraged to check out the "NFL Head Coach" video game franchise.

If you've loved the latest editions of Madden, however, you shouldn't be disappointed with what you get this year. You will notice some interesting animations and have some fun with 9-man tackles. Either way, make sure that you know what you want out of a game before you check out this year's Madden.
