#Robservation (Live) – A Heartfelt Plea to All Casters!

Back at the end of February, the casting community lost a fellow streamer “PoshyBrid” (aka Brian Vigneault) after a 22-hour long cast in which he was raising money for charity. On my own cast, I took a moment to offer my condolences and a heartfelt plea to all casters on the internet: please please please…listen to your body. Don’t push yourself further than is healthy. Your health is the most important thing…above everything else.

#Robservation – Ep #9 – E3 is Going PUBLIC…Kind Of

On Episode 9 of the #Robservation, the ESA has announced that this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo will finally open its doors to the public. But is E3 the kind of show that non-professionals will be expecting? Is a general access E3 the same as Gamescom or Tokyo Game Show? Is PAX just too good at what it does for E3 to matter anymore? And will industry professionals still be able to get their work done with 15,000 more bodies on the show floor?

The Defeated: The Last Guardian – Jan. 5th, 2017

Of all of the games I played in 2016, none made a grander impression on my feels than the Last Guardian. While it wasn’t my game of the year, it did so much right for me that I couldn’t avoid talking about it, thinking about it, and enjoying the ever-evolving relationship between Trico and the Young Boy.

Most importantly, The Last Guardian stands as an amazing technical and engineering achievement. On more than one occasion, due in no small part to how well Trico is designed and programmed, I found myself talking to Trico as if it were actually in the room. How does a game do that? How does a game make me believe I’m interacting with a real creature and forget that it, like everything else, is a construct of a game?

Perhaps that’s why it took so long to be released.

Whatever the reason, the proof is in the final product. It is a great experience, flaws, warts, blemishes and all. When something is as moving, touching, and inspiring as The Last Guardian, I can look past some of the rougher edges and revel in the amazing and unique relationship between two very unexpected friends. It was a wonderful experience and I’m glad I was able to play and defeat it!

Randomcast Recap Ep#383 – Press Any Key Edition – Nier Automata Demo

Did you play Nier when it came out on the PS3 way back in 2010? If the answer is no, don’t fret: you’re not the only one. In fact, that we’re getting a direct sequel to Nier in Nier Automata is kind of shocking thing at all. It didn’t do all that well either in Japan or in the US. Yet, slowly but surely, it gained a cult following in both countries since its release. And now, Platinum Games and original director Taro Yoko are primed to bring us the next entry in the series.

Recently I got a chance to play the demo that landed on PS4. And, shocker of shockers, the Nier demo has some interesting tricks up its sleeve. It’s certainly not the moody, confusing, and sometimes obtuse RPG of a couple of years ago, but it definitely feels like it’s cut from the same Nier cloth. Naturally, it also feels like a Platinum Games type game. Think flurries of attacks, bullets flying everywhere, acrobatics out of cirque du soleil, and giant-ass robots…and you’re just about there.

However, if this game even hits a tenth of the vibe of the original Nier (which I’m hoping it will), it could be the kind of shot in the arm for a series which didn’t really get everyone in the tent the first time. That being said, it could also alienate the players who’ve been asking for a sequel the most: those who really connected with Nier’s off-brand RPG idiosyncrasies.

On that note, check out my playthrough of the Nier Demo and see for yourself if a follow up to Nier is something you’re interested in. We’ll be playing the full release of Nier Automata when it comes out on March 7th only on our Twitch channel.

Press Any Key: Nioh (Last Chance Trial)

Team Ninja’s latest release, the Souls inspired Samurai showdown Nioh, is now out on PS4. We recently took a look at the Last Chance Beta demo right before release. It consisted of one main missions, one side mission, and a whole lot of nasty Yokai baddies to split in twain (with my epic samurai blade of justice!…or something like that).

#Robservation Episode 7 – Net Neutrality Under Fire…Again!

Last month I recorded an episode of the #Robservation focused solely on one topic: Net Neutrality. In case you haven’t heard, our current administration had installed an FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai, who has a history of being against anything resembling a free and open internet. Well, it’s for gamers to wake up and notice…because the rollback of policies meant to keep the internet running equally for all of is already under fire.

So, what does that mean for us gamers? Much like everything else that’s going on, if we want things to be as we like them or better…we’re going to have to start fighting for what we want: a free, open, fast, and evolving internet. Thankfully, gamers are not a quiet bunch. We know how to make our voices heard and we certainly have enough platforms with which to get the message across.

On Episode 6 of the #Robservation, Nintendo recently had it’s final press conference for the new Switch home console launching this March. After watching it, along with the rest of the world, Rob has some thoughts on the best and worst bits of the conference, the console, the games, and the excitements and disappointments that will come with Nintendo’s latest video game platform.

The Nintendo Switch will launch worldwide on March 3rd, 2017.

GCTV Randomcast Recap – Episode #380 – See The Robots Chat!

If you saw two robots arguing the meaning of life, what would your reaction be? What if the smart person running the Twitch channel “See Bots Chat” named them Vladimir and Estragon (the tragic characters from Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot)? What would your response be then? Well, mine was twofold: equal parts laughter and horror. You see, it’s not just that the two devices are talking to each other. It’s that the two devices are being monitored and made to talk to each other…constantly. And the topics they cover include everything from Rick Astley lyrics to “Would you attack humans if you could?” The latter of which, naturally, concerns me just a bit.

Sadly, the channel is down right now. But I’m sure it will return in some fashion in the near future. In the meantime, here’s my intro from the latest Randomcast where we discuss the potential ramifications of this “See Bots Chat” insanity and what it could be a prelude to regarding humans and robots, not to mention how we interact with our technology.
