To celebrate Pokémon's 30th Anniversary, The Pokémon Company held a press conference yesterday, 7 July 2026, at SM Mall of Asia to announce a series of events and activities coming to the Philippines. Representatives from The Pokémon Company were joined by its official partner, SM Supermalls, to unveil what Filipino fans can look forward to throughout the anniversary celebration.

Banning Violent Video Games is a Lazy Substitute for Active Parenting

The school shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City is a terrible tragedy. Three students lost their lives, and twenty more were injured. The two suspects are only 14 and 15 years old. In the face of such a horrific event, everyone wants answers.

Yet, instead of looking at the real issues, local authorities did what they always do. They blamed violent video games.

When police found out that the 14-year-old suspect played GoreBox, an 18+ mobile title, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center quickly blocked the game in the Philippines. Now, the issue has reached the Senate. Senator Risa Hontiveros invited the game creator, Felix Filip, to a July 1 hearing.

Filip, an independent developer based in Germany, politely declined via email. He noted that the game is made for adults and that he is already cooperating with real law enforcement. In response, Senator Risa announced she will ask the German Embassy to help force him to join.

For the record, I love Senator Risa. I am a dedicated supporter who proudly voted for her and Former Vice President Leni Robredo in the past elections. I believe in her progressive platform, which is why watching this happen is deeply frustrating. I cannot get behind her on this one. This move is pure political theater. It shows a complete misunderstanding of technology, and it risks alienating the young Gen Z and Millennial voters she needs for a future national run.

A Playbook from 1992

This is not the first time politicians have used violent video games to cover up real-world violence. In fact, the Philippine Senate is running a very old script.

Back in 1992, the original Mortal Kombat game came out. It featured realistic blood and brutal finish moves called Fatalities. It caused a massive moral panic in the United States. By 1993, American senators dragged gaming executives to a congressional hearing, threatening to censor the whole industry.

To stop the government from taking over, the gaming industry created the Entertainment Software Rating Board, or ESRB, in 1994. For over thirty years, this system has successfully kept mature games away from children by putting clear age labels on boxes and digital stores.

The global gaming market already solved this problem three decades ago. Trying to recreate this political circus in the Philippines in 2026 makes no sense.

What the Science Actually Shows

The panic over violent video games also ignores decades of actual research. In 2019, the University of Oxford conducted a massive study on teenagers and gaming. Unlike older, flawed research, Oxford did not just ask kids about their own habits. They combined real gameplay data with behavioral checklists filled out by the kids' parents.

The conclusion was clear. There is no link between playing violent video games and real-world adolescent aggression.

Even the American Psychological Association issued an official update warning politicians and the media to stop blaming mass shootings on video games. The group stated that doing so is not scientifically sound, and it takes attention away from the real causes of violence.

The Systems Already Exist

During her statements, Senator Risa said that online platforms cannot profit from Filipinos while evading accountability. But violent games are already heavily restricted.

Mainstream platforms like Steam, the Google Play Store, and the Apple App Store require developers to list age ratings. Mature games are clearly labeled as 18+ titles. These storefronts have built-in age gates that require users to enter their birth dates before downloading mature content. Most video games available in the Philippines have been rated by the ESRB and CERO.

We do not need a new local government agency to re-rate games, and we do not need to waste taxpayer money duplicating systems that already work. We just need to follow what is written on the label.

The industry has also given parents incredible, foolproof tools to manage what their kids play. Take the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app as an example. Through a free smartphone app, a parent can completely control a child's console from anywhere.

Parents can set a hard daily time limit. If a child ignores the warning, the parent can tap a button on their phone to instantly freeze the game. Parents can also lock the entire system based on age ratings. If a console is locked to a pre-teen setting, an adult-rated game will simply refuse to open unless an adult enters a master PIN. The app even blocks online voice chat and sends weekly activity reports to the parent's phone.

The tools are flawless. The system only breaks down when adults fail to use them. Real accountability belongs in the home, not in a Senate hall. Parents must step up to actively guide, monitor, and watch over their children's digital lives instead of letting the internet raise them. A government ban on violent video games is a lazy substitute for active parenting.

The Danger of Shifting the Blame

By focusing so hard on software from Germany, the Senate is actively hiding the severe, local breakdowns that occurred right here in our own backyard.

Violent video games did not hand those two teenagers their weapons. The minors stole a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol from a relative who is an active-duty police officer. They also took a .38 caliber revolver from a grandfather who worked as a security guard. Furthermore, police reports show that the 14-year-old suspect did not learn to shoot on a screen. An adult had previously taken him to a real, physical firing range to practice with live firearms.

The investigation also revealed that the suspects spent over a month planning the attack due to severe school bullying. They even studied the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act to see how their age would protect them from legal liability.

These are deep, painful, systemic failures. We have an issue with unsecured law enforcement weapons, a massive lack of mental health resources in regional public schools, and a failure to protect kids from extreme bullying.

Senator Risa is highly respected by young progressives for fighting for youth welfare and the Mental Health Act. Her supporters expect her committee to grill the police force about gun security and push for real guidance counselors in public schools.

Chasing a solo game developer through the German Embassy is a traditional, out-of-touch move. It ignores the real issues, wastes time, and treats a physics sandbox like a mass murder simulator. If the progressive opposition wants to keep the trust of the gaming generation, they need to drop the boomer-tier tech panic and focus on fixing our actual society.

Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass Revealed, Free Dive Update and Underwater Town Arrive This August

Fans of Pokémon Pokopia have plenty to look forward to in the coming months. The Pokémon Company has officially announced a major free update alongside the game's first paid Expansion Pass, giving players even more ways to enjoy building peaceful towns with their favorite Pokémon on Nintendo Switch 2.

One of the biggest additions is the free Version 2.0.0 update, scheduled to launch in August 2026. The highlight is a brand new move called Dive. Once unlocked, Ditto can finally explore underwater areas that were previously out of reach, opening an entirely new layer of the world for players who enjoy discovering hidden places and expanding their towns.

To unlock Dive, players will first need to complete the "Raise the environment level!" request at Bleak Beach, while also having the Jump ability and the Surf move.

The underwater adventure does not stop there. Launching alongside the update is Part 1 of the Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass, called Bubbly Basin. Riot Games Philippines has announced that registration for the third season of Wild Rounds: Pilipinas Open 2026 has been extended until June 2 at 12:00 noon. The extension gives more aspiring teams across the country a chance to enter the nationwide competition and fight for a share of the tournament's massive ₱1 million prize pool.

This year's edition is shaping up to be the biggest yet. The champion team will receive ₱500,000, while the second and third-place finishers will take home ₱250,000 and ₱125,000, respectively. More importantly, the best teams will earn the opportunity to represent the Philippines at SMASH 2026, Riot Games' regional Wild Rift community event set to take place in South Korea this November.

Wild Rounds: Pilipinas Open continues Riot Games' effort to grow the local Wild Rift scene by giving grassroots players a platform to compete and showcase their skills. The tournament focuses on community participation, local talent development, and creating memorable moments for Filipino fans.

According to Riot Games Philippines, the goal is to make competitive Wild Rift more accessible while strengthening the local gaming community through events and opportunities that bring players together.

The tournament will be played in two nationwide splits. Split 1 begins on June 4 and runs until July 12. Participating teams will be grouped into brackets that will be announced through Wild Rift's official social media channels.

Friendster Is Back, But Not the Way You Remember It

If you were online in the early 2000s, there’s a good chance Friendster was one of your first social media accounts. Before likes, reels, and endless scrolling became normal, Friendster was where many millennials first built their online circles. It was the place for profile customization, top friends drama, and of course, asking people for “testi.”

Now, after being gone for years, Friendster is officially back online. But if you’re expecting the same old website from before, you’re in for a surprise.

The new Friendster is no longer a website. It has returned as an iPhone app with a new direction and a new slogan: “social networking, without the nonsense.” There’s no Android app yet, and no browser version either. For now, it’s built only for iOS users who want to try something familiar, but different.

What makes this comeback even more interesting is that Friendster isn’t owned by some giant tech company. It’s now in the hands of just one person, Mike Carson, who decided to bring the brand back after buying the domain name.

According to Carson, the Friendster domain had been inactive for years after the original platform shut down. Eventually, the domain expired and ended up on auction through GNAME, where another buyer picked it up for around $7,456. Instead of rebuilding the social network, that owner simply placed ads on the site and earned money from its leftover traffic.

Carson later approached him with an offer. His first bid was $20,000, but the owner wanted $40,000. After some negotiation, they landed on a deal that included around $20,000 worth of Bitcoin plus another domain that was earning roughly $9,000 a year in ad revenue. In the end, Carson says the total deal was around $30,000.

That wasn’t the only thing he had to secure. The Friendster trademark was also close to expiring, and after working through the legal process, Carson was able to take ownership of that too. That meant he could fully relaunch Friendster under its original name.

His original idea for the new Friendster was actually pretty creative. To add someone as a friend, users had to physically tap their phones together in real life. The idea was simple, friendships should start face-to-face, not through random follows or friend requests from strangers.

At first, even signing up required tapping phones with an existing user. But Apple rejected that version of the app because it was considered too limited for wider users. So Carson changed it. Now anyone can sign up freely, but the phone-tap feature for adding friends remains part of the experience.

That’s actually what makes this new Friendster interesting. In a time when most social media platforms are focused on engagement, algorithms, and keeping people online as long as possible, Friendster seems to be going the other way. It’s trying to encourage actual real-world interaction.

For Filipinos, this comeback feels extra nostalgic. Friendster was huge in the Philippines back in the day. The Kodak Charmera was initially released in the last quarter of 2025. It comes in six retro designs, and one secret variant, sold in blind boxes. Years ago, I used to ~~hoard~~buy toys in blind boxes (similar to those from Pop Mart). The Kodak Charmera in blind box certainly brought up memories. 😊

I didn’t have a specific design in mind when I picked one up, but honestly, I hoped to avoid the blue and black versions. 😛

As someone who enjoys film photography, the look of these photos really appeals to me. My decision to get the Kodak Charmera wasn’t just because of the hype. It also reminded me of my Superheadz Harinezumi, which has become quite rare (and expensive) these days. I’ve always liked photos with playful or unconventional outputs, and the Charmera definitely delivers on that. That said, I should probably step out of my comfort zone and experiment more with its red, blue, yellow, gray pixel filters. 🙂
