Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

It seems that Singtel has just screwed iPhone 3G users by imposing a penalty of SGD$600 if you only fulfilled between 6 to 12 months of contract and SGD$300 if you fulfilled between 12 months and 21 months of contract! Singtel should not forget that majority of the users that will purchase iPhone 3G will most likely purchase iPhone 3GS!

What is YOURLS?

YOURLS is a small set of PHP scripts that will allow you to run your own URL shortening service (a la TinyURL). You can make it private or public, you can pick custom keyword URLs, it comes with its own API. You will love it.

There’s a WordPress plugin available for YOURLS, making integration with your blog a snap: create short URLs and tweet them automagically as you publish blog posts.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Michael Jackson, the child star turned King of Pop who set the world dancing but whose musical genius was overshadowed by a bizarre lifestyle and sex scandals, died on Thursday. He was 50.

Jackson was pronounced dead after arriving at a Los Angeles hospital in full cardiac arrest, Los Angeles coroner Fred Corral said. The cause of death was not known and an autopsy would likely take place on Friday, he said.

Jackson’s sudden death had been reported earlier by U.S. media including the Los Angeles Times and the TMZ entertainment website, which said he was taken ill at his home and rushed to the hospital by paramedics who found him not breathing when they arrived.

LG App Store
LG also announces their own LG Application store which will be opened on the 14th July 2009. It will have about 1,400 apps at launch time out of which about 100 of them are free apps. It will have local applications as well as LG dedicated applications. At lunch time it will only support Windows Mobiles app, if I am not wrong Java and Android apps will be supported eventually.

They also did mentioned a double assurance test on each app. The first test is by the content provider and the second test is by LG. Similar to how the Apple App Store works. I don’t really consider the “content provider” as a first test as I don’t think developer will released an untested app.

The revenue sharing scheme is 10% better than Apple. LG will get 20% and the developer will get to keep 80%.

LG GM730
The LG GM730 is a Windows Mobile 6.1 phone (upgradable to 6.5 when it is released) with the S-Class User Interface running on top of it. My first hands on with the device is that is is surprising quite smooth and doesn’t lag as much as I expected it to be. I will be getting the unit to review sometime in July 2009, so do keep a look out for it! In the mean time do check out these videos on the LG GM730:

Now my plugins uses jQuery for AJAX instead of TW-Sack. I have also updated the widget code to make use of the new WordPress 2.8 new Widget class and that supports multi-instances widgets. The widget code has now been merge with the main plugin file so the standalone widget plugin file is no longer in use. Please delete the whole plugin folder and upload it again to avoid any error.

As WordPress 2.8 supports loading of JavaScript in the footer, all my plugins’ JavaScripts will be loaded in the footer. Be sure you have < ?php wp_footer(); ?> in your theme footer.php.

What is Video Games Live?
Video Games Live – the biggest and most popular video game concert in the world debuts in Singapore!

Similar with almost all mobile music services, the songs comes with DRM but you get to owned 15 songs every month. In another words, you can download 15 DRM-free songs every month. The file format for the DRM is of course WMA and the DRM-free songs should be MP3. I have not been able to confirm this as there are conflicting information on it.

The bitrate when you play on your PC should be 192kbps but on your phone it is 96 kbps. Again, I am unable to confirm this. Apparently DK and Nicole received different information about this as well. Nothing technical is said in the press release or the Q&A session.

*UPDATE* Music downloaded to PC is in 192kbps WMA format. Music downloaded to mobile is in 96kbps MP3 format. It’s the same for both DRM and DRM-free music.

PC Show 2010 will be happening on 10th June 2010 to 13th June 2010. But for now, lets focus on Comex 2009 which will happen on the 10th September 2009 to 13th September 2009 at Suntec Convention Center.

Major New Improvements
First and foremost, 2.8 is way faster to use. We’ve changed the way WordPress does style and scripting.

The core and plugin updaters in previous versions of WordPress have been such a success we decided to bring the same to themes. You can now browse the entire theme directory and install a theme with one click from the comfort of your WordPress dashboard.

If you make edits or tweaks to themes or plugins from your dashboard, you’ll appreciate the new CodePress editor which gives syntax highlighting to the previously-plain editor. Also there is now contextual documentation for the functions in the file you’re editing linked right below the editor.

If you were ever frustrated with widgets before, this release should be your savior. We’ve completely redesigned the widgets interface (which we didn’t have time to in 2.7) to allow you to do things like edit widgets on the fly, have multiple copies of the same widget, drag and drop widgets between sidebars, and save inactive widgets so you don’t lose all their settings. Developers now have access to a much cleaner and robust API for creating widgets as well.

Finally you should explore the new Screen Options on every page. It’s the tab in the top right. Now, for example, if you have a wide monitor you could set up your dashboard to have four columns of widgets instead of the two it has by default. On other pages you can change how many items show per page.
