The Resident Evil series is once again about to make a splash in the gaming world, with the ninth game in the series, Requiem, coming out on February 27, 2026. But it’s not the only new game in the series coming out soon. In July, Joycity and Aniplex announced that they are making a mobile title, called Resident Evil Survival Unit, which brings real-time strategy to the franchise. As of this month, the game has already had 1 million pre-registrations from fans.

But what is Resident Evil Survival Unit, and what place does it have in a franchise that has traditionally been for survival-horror action? GamesBeat spoke with producer Shinji Hashimoto about the game’s design, and also his own experiences with developing the new game.

I have been with GamesBeat since 2012, when VentureBeat bought a small, community-focused games media site called Bitmob. I was an intern at Bitmob and carried that role over to GamesBeat.

Since then, I’ve spent most of my adult life and the entirety of my professional career at GamesBeat, eventually ending up as managing editor. Today, however, is my last day here.

Some of you might know this, but a few months ago I became a co-owner of Giant Bomb. It’s an opportunity that came suddenly and unexpectedly. Our CEO, Gina Joseph, and editorial director Dean Takahashi graciously allowed me to keep continue my role here while taking on my new responsibilities at Giant Bomb.

Well, it turns out that working two full-time jobs is hard! After months of living that life, it became clear that I had to focus my energy. My position as a co-owner of Giant Bomb gives me special responsibilities there that I want to see through.

The GamesBeat crew at E3 2012. That’s me on the left (with hair!). Dean (far right) still looks exactly the same.

It’s a bittersweet moment for me. GamesBeat gave me my dream job and opened up so many amazing opportunities for me. I got to interview a lot of my heroes in gaming, like Ron Gilbert, Tetsuya Nomura, Yoko Taro, and Eiji Aonuma. Heck, I even got to talk to Garfield creator Jim Davis once thanks to some mobile game launch. I got to attend industry events across the world, including our incredible shows and major showcases like E3, Gamescom, and Blizzcon.

It does feel a bit easier leaving knowing that the site is in such good hands with Gina and Dean. I’ve been so proud to see how GamesBeat has changed since going independent, and I know that they are taking the brand on the right path to success. I hope I was able to help during these early days of GamesBeat’s new era.

I want to thank Gina for giving me such an amazing home here at GamesBeat. And thank you to Dean, who I’ve worked with during all of those 13 years, for helping me learn how a true professional can thrive in this industry. I also want to shoutout Rachel Kaser and thank her for becoming such an important part of the team and for always being someone I can rely on.

Thank you to everyone at GamesBeat. I will never forget your kindness and hard work, and I look forward to finding new ways to work with you in the future! If you’re looking for me, I’ll be at Giant Bomb … or Walt Disney World.

The Communication Workers of America announced today that over 450 workers at Activision Blizzard who’ve worked on the Diablo franchise, have voted to unionize. According to the CWA, the unit includes a wide swathe of workers across the company, including developers, artists, engineers and more. Microsoft has also recognized the union.

Blizzard staff speaking about the union vote noted the potential workplace problems that the union vote would avert. Most recently, Microsoft laid off over 9,000 employees, which included staff at Blizzard. Jason Justice, president of CWA Local 9510 — one of the chapters under which the Blizzard members would be organizing — said, “What’s happening here is part of a much larger story about turning the tide in an industry that has long overlooked its labor. Entertainment workers across film, television, music, and now video games are standing together to have a seat at the table.”

Mobile games and the Nintendo Switch 2 have helped push July’s numbers into the positives, according to industry-tracking firm Circana. While there were several PC and console games that performed well, even reaching to the top of the month’s sales charts, it was reportedly the mobile market that kept the game sales numbers largely in the green for the month.

“Monthly hardware spending grew 21% when compared to a year ago, to $384M,” said Mat Piscatella, Circana’s executive producer for games reports. “This is the highest hardware spending in a July month since the $441M achieved in July 2008.” The Nintendo Switch 2 is the best-selling piece of hardware in units and dollars, both in July and for the year overall.
