The only solution as of now is to limit how much a client processes incoming messages. The client sends data to the server, the server maintains a queue of information and on a periodic interval keeps dispatching this data. This way we can control how much data is processed by the client. Though it looks like a smart fox issue, the solution above is temporary, but should work.

graphics exploded games

Unity 4

Unity 4 features comes with load of new stuff. And hey! it works on the iPod and the iPhone too. And it is a pure arcade racing game.

The game has all the usual gaming mode that comes along with any racing game and also with other features like earning money, unlocking cars and like. There are twelve different locations and some awesome cars including Mini Cooper S and the Ferrari 599 XX. The graphics is good and so is the look and feel of the cars. There are cool soundtracks too. It is available on the PSP too.
The game is available for the XBox, PS3 and for the windows and was released last year.

Bethesda started the work of fallout in 2004. The game has some adult content and also violence and had chosen to pursue the ESRM rating of M (Mature).

graphics exploded games

Electroserver or Smartfoxserver

Electroserver rocks. It's simple, easy to use and quick to learn. Smartfoxserver on that other hand is slightly different but if you have worked on ES then working on SFS would not be difficult.

SFS has an api for C#, now this is a plus for most people developing apps for windows or mac. Support for Actionscript however is there both for ES and SFS. So this would help game development for online games. Learning curve for ES is low and hence you could speed up in no time. It has got a good API and have a great documentation. And best of all, it is got a good customer support and forum.

So my choice would always be on ES.
graphics exploded games

Windows versions and Operating Systems! I have a list of 36 items here. Keep in mind that I have excluded the server and CE editions of windows. The first thing you will note is each OS released has different editions. And the second thing is - So many different operating systems.

The point here is why should we have so many editions? What purpose would it make? It is clear that it does sound sensible by its name but then why? And the second point, why rewrite the OS again and again with a different name or have different names in the first place. I have always known of software begin with version 1.0 and proceed to better versions with a more mature and riper software. This is how it should have been but then we end up learning the operating system again trying to adjust to its new features. And Microsoft ends up spending more resource on support and maintenance for these projects too.

To me it all seems like an overhead. I wish someday they will realise this.
graphics exploded games

Reading an XML file from unity standalone application and web player.

If you try reading a XML file (or any file) inside a folder within the 'Assets' folder using the System.Xml namespace, you may notice that it works withing the Unity standalone application, but not when compiled and run in the web player.

To make the file readable in both the Unity stand alone application and the web player do the following

1) Create a Resources folder within the Assets folder.
2) Place the file (say Config.xml) within the Resources folder.
3) And use Resources.Load("Config") to load the file.

This would guarantee the file being read in the web player too.
graphics exploded games

Electro Server Configuration for MacOSX

Configuring ElectroServer (4.0) is an easy task for Windows. You just download the setup, install it and run the server. And you also have the admin tool and the UI to tweak and adjust the settings of the server. But not an easy task with MacOSX.

Here I would be giving an information about how to configure Electro-Server for the MacOSX. As you know to run ElectroServer 4.0+ you need JVM 1.6 or higher. But SUN does not have a download of JVM 1.6 for MacOSX as Mac decided to bring up its own virtual machine.

At this point I hope you must be knowing what ElectroServer is. In simple words it is a server used for developing and configuring multiplayer games and MMOs. For more information kindly visit the Electro Server website.

To run the Electro Server in MacOSX, do the following

1) Download the Unix (without JVM) version of the Electro Server.
2) Un-Archive it. And run ElectroServer unix executable file.
3) If you run it, you would probably get an error stating that the required JVM was not found. And that it can be resolved by adding a path to the home directory of the JVM.
4) Now open up the Terminal under utilities. This is like the command prompt of the windows.
5) Type in mkdir ~/.MacOSX This would create a hidden MacOSX directory under the home directory.
6)Now its time to create the .plist file. The .plist is a property list file which contains the information of all the path variables. Basically it is a list of name value pairs. Just like how we load the environment variables in windows. So we shall now create the environment.plist file under this MacOSX directory. To do this easily download the Property List Editor from the apple website.
7)Create a new child enter the variable name as INSTALL_4J_JAVA_HOME and set the path to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.frameworK/Versions/1.6/Home/. Also add another child with name PATH and set the path to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.frameworK/Versions/1.6/Home/
9) Save the file as environment.plist in desktop and then copy it to the MacOSX folder using the Terminal.

There you go, you are now done with configuring the ElectroServer for MacOSX. Restart the machine or log off and login. As you login the environment.plist file is read and the required environment variables are set. Now run the Electroserver unix executable file. If your day is good, it should show the following

06:19:56,842 [main] INFO DisplayLogger -
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Starting ElectroServer 4.0.6
Go to http://www.electro-server.com/ for the newest version.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Computer Information
When I did this program the version I had was NetBean IDE 6.1. You can go to their website to download it. It would suite for other programming languages too, including the Set Top Box.

The program.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mj78SnNyHMo/SNZc9ScufOI/AAAAAAAADF4/avcgTe44eEU/s400/J2ME+Thread+App.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248484623740992738" />

The Midlet:
Just like an applet for the browser, the midlet is an application running in the mobile platform using J2ME.

So to run an application on a mobile device you first need a Midlet class.

This is the midlet class.

package MyApp;

import javax.microedition.midlet.*;
import javax.microedition.lcdui.*;

public class MyApp extends MIDlet {
public void startApp() {

MyGameCanvas myApp = new MyGameCanvas();
myApp.start();

Display.getDisplay(this).setCurrent(d);
}
}

For better understanding I am keeping this class as small as possible. As you can see, this is where the application first initializes. The startApp function is invoked and all dram happens from then on. Here we create an object for the MyGameCanvas class defined below and trigger the thread within it.

The MyGameCanvas class:

package MyApp;

import java.io.IOException;
import javax.microedition.lcdui.*;
import javax.microedition.lcdui.game.*;
import java.lang.Runnable.*;

public class MyGameCanvas extends Canvas implements Runnable
{
private Image vImage;
private boolean vRenderLoop;
private int vXPos;
private int vWidth;
private int vHeight;

MyGameCanvas()
{
//super(true);
vXPos=0;
vWidth=getWidth();
vHeight=getHeight();
System.out.println("Constructor called");
vImage=null;
vRenderLoop=false;
try
{
vImage=Image.createImage("/im/a.png");
System.out.println("Loaded the image");
} catch(IOException exp)
{
System.out.println("Image not found" + exp.getMessage());
}
}
public void paint(Graphics g)
{
g.setColor(0xffffff);
g.fillRect(0,0,vWidth,vHeight);
vXPos++;
if(vImage!=null)
{
g.drawImage(vImage, vXPos, 50, Graphics.TOP | Graphics.LEFT);
vXPos++;

if((vXPos + vImage.getWidth())> vWidth)
vXPos=0;
}
}
public void start()
{
System.out.println("start invoked");
vRenderLoop=true;
Thread t = new Thread(this);
t.start();
}

public void stop()
{
vRenderLoop=false;
}

public void render(Graphics g)
{

}

public void run()
{
System.out.println("yeah yeah");
while(vRenderLoop)
{
try { Thread.sleep(20);}
catch (InterruptedException ie)
{
stop();
}
repaint();
}
}
}

This class loads an image (a.png) and repaints the scene by rendering the image in a different location with a delay of 20ms. It is self explanatory as you can see. The thread runs asynchronously and hence you could take advantage of this by playing a small progress bar animation while waiting for a request from the server.

Also note that here we make use of the Canvas class. And hence the functions paint() and repaint(). If we extended GameCanvas instead then we would make use of flushGraphics().

The use of GameCanvas shall be explained in the next blog.
graphics exploded games

Embedding Font in ActionScript 3.0

Embedding fonts in Action Script 3.0 is fairly an easy job. The following is the steps you need to follow

Goto the library of the Movie. Right click and click New Font. And enter the following information as shown in the image below.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mj78SnNyHMo/SLAJKX7Q-hI/AAAAAAAAC_4/XO3c9DImhZE/s400/newfont.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237696440457820690" />

Now goto to the property panel and choose the newly created font. All fonts created and placed in the library will be post-fixed with a *. In our care here it is WProCap*.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mj78SnNyHMo/SLAJxpRm-HI/AAAAAAAADAA/2tspl6J4yJc/s400/newfont1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237697115129837682" />

Now go to the property panel and click the embed font button. And do as shown in the image below. Click open and enjoy dynamic fonts in AS 3.0.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mj78SnNyHMo/SLAKVEoklyI/AAAAAAAADAI/QmxfufERFrQ/s400/newfont2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237697723769329442" />
graphics exploded games

Configuring Flash in Eclipse using ASDT, MTASC and Flashout

Software Needed:

Eclipse

MTASC

ASDT

Flashout

Java JDK

Installation:

Make sure the latest version of the Java JDK installed in your machine. The following could the reasons

1) Check that you dont have multiple files in different paths with the same name. One with the function and one without.
2) Check the linkage property in the library for the movieclip. Make sure it points to the correct package and class name.

In my case, when I spent two hours trying to troubleshoot this F******** problem,I resolved it using method two. Flash by default creates a class for you if it cannot find the path and was breaking my head trying to figure out what is going on.
graphics exploded games

Grand Theft Auto IV

Having sold 16 million copies and grossed about 165 million pounds in the first 24 hours of release, Grand Theft Auto has definitely created a world record. They have been developed by the W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative. The specification contains fourteen guidelines which are general principles of accessible design. Each guideline is associated with one or more checkpoints describing how to apply that guideline to particular features of Web pages. An appendix to the guidelines, "List of Checkpoints for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0" presents the checkpoints sorted by priority for easy reference. These guidelines not only make pages more accessible to people with disabilities, but also have the side benefit of making pages more accessible to all users, or to users using different browsers or one of the emerging handheld or voice-based computers.

Taken from Fact Sheet for "Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0

Excerpt from http://www.thepollenshop.co.uk/accessible_web_services/standards_compliance/wcag_compliance.asp
graphics exploded games

Flash Banner - ActionScript & Javascript

Ok! Now we need to create a flash banner but hell o! we have loads of methods to achieve it.

Flash brought in the ExternalInterface for easy communication between Actionscript and Javascript.

I am not going to explore this here. However what I am going to explain now is the old method of creating a banner compatible in most browsers and yet is very simple. A method invented way back in 2000 and is still going on.....

The requirements are...

1) The banner should support image and swf played at regular intervals
2) The banner should be compatible in most browsers
3) The banner should be able to communicate with Javascript and vice versa

How do we achieve this?

1) Create a banner.swf file. This swf will be embedded in the browser and will now form the container for loading any image or swf into it dynamically.
2) Use javascript + Actionscript to communicate to and from the banner and voila! there it the trick.

Process:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mj78SnNyHMo/SAg3x6TSj4I/AAAAAAAACIo/Te2TtMwA4TI/s400/frames.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5190459901147778946" />

Create something as seen above with the following actionscript within each frame.

Frame 1:

var bSourceObtained=false;
mcClicker.enabled=false;

Frame 2:

onEnterFrame()
{
if(trigger=="reset")
{
mcClicker.enabled=true;
mcMovie.loadMovie(source);
bSourceObtained=true;
trigger="init";
}
}

Frame 3:

gotoAndPlay(2);

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mj78SnNyHMo/SAg7SKTSj5I/AAAAAAAACIw/uOJh-OihH78/s400/source.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5190463753733443474" />

The flash would contain three dynamic texts and two movieclips. One movieclip would act as a loader to load the content into it. And the other would handle the onRelease Event and process the information in holds. And hence we have three layers.

Layer 1 containing the Clicker MovieClip (A Transparent movieclip stretched to the size of the banner)
Layer 2 containing the Dynamic Texts and three frames with actionscripts within them
Layer 3 containing the Movie MovieClip - (A red box movieclip that will hold the content loaded)

The only thing then pending is an actionscript for the onRelease event of the clicker movieclip. Focus on the clicker movieclip Press F9 and paste the following script

on(release)
{
mcClicker.enabled=false;
if(_root.bSourceObtained==true)
{
getURL("javascript:invoke()");
_root.bSourceObtained=false;
getURL(_root.url,"_blank");

}
}

This is what goes into the Javascript

function getFlashMovieObject(movieName)
{
if (window.document[movieName])
{
return window.document[movieName];
}
if (navigator.appName.indexOf("Microsoft Internet")==-1)
{
if (document.embeds && document.embeds[movieName])
return document.embeds[movieName];
}
else // if (navigator.appName.indexOf("Microsoft Internet")!=-1)
{
return document.getElementById(movieName);
}
}

function invoke()
{
var flashMovie=getFlashMovieObject("myFlashMovie");
var url=flashMovie.GetVariable("/:url");
}

function SendDataToFlashMovie(url,source,id)
{
var flashMovie=getFlashMovieObject("myFlashMovie");
flashMovie.SetVariable("/:url", url);
flashMovie.SetVariable("/:source", source);
flashMovie.SetVariable("/:trigger","reset");
}

Insert this javascript into the page and there you go. You should be set and running.
getFlashMovieObject gets the object of the flash included into the html.
SendDataToFlashMovie Sends information from Javascript to Flash.
invoke Gets information from Flash to Javascript. All through the dynamic texts we created in flash.

Ensoy.
graphics exploded games

Pro Evolution Soccer - 2008 - Nintendo Wii

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mj78SnNyHMo/R_3YH_pcFyI/AAAAAAAACGs/8En4f8qvKH8/s320/soccer+wii.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187539977656604450" />

The world’s most popular soccer game is back under a new name, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. Handling sounds in AS 3.0 is so much of a bottleneck. Well its not a matter of something wrong with Adobe or the scripting language itself. But personally I just want to avoid so much trouble of declaring variables up and down just to MUTE the sounds. If only there was a simple way to do this.

So here it is. To handle sounds this is what you do. I shall give an example for you to easily understand it instead.

var vRequest:URLRequest=new URLRequest("sounds\monica_yells.mp3");
var vSound:Sound=new Sound(lRequest);
var vChannel:SoundChannel;

public function playMonica()
{
vChannel = vSound.play();
}

public function stopSound()
{
vChannel.stop();
}

public function muteSound()
{
var lTransform:SoundTransform=new SoundTransform();
lTransform.volume=1;
vChannel.soundTransform=lTransform;
}
graphics exploded games

Actionscript 3.0 - paremeter loading

In Actioscript 2.0 it was relatively easy to read the parameters passed from the URL since there variables could be added to the global stage and in flash we could access it using a simple code like

_root.audio_URL or something similar.

However this is quiet different now in AS 3.0. The same can be done using the loaderInfo. Something like

loaderInfo.parameters

Go to this link and you shall get a good explanation on this.
http://theolagendijk.wordpress.com/2007/07/06/parameters-for-a-flash-9-actionscript-3-swf/

graphics exploded games

The Fast and the Furious - Video Game (PS2)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mj78SnNyHMo/R_hZaVVcxII/AAAAAAAACE4/4U6dNoCigYs/s200/fast+and+furious+games.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185993279855707266" />
The Fast and The Furious?) is a racing game for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable.
