"Face the Vitrine" With Yasmin Elayat

On April 22nd, Yasmin Elayat and I launched "Face the Vitrine", an interactive public art installation in downtown Cairo. This is actually the launch of a six-month-long project (The "Vatrina" Project) that takes place in an abandoned storefront provided by Ismailia Real Estate Company and is made possible with the support of a grant provided by the Arab Fund for Art and Culture (AFAC).

"Face the Vitrine" launched as part of D-CAF's visual art program, but will continue to be on display until May 22nd, after which the second installation will start.

A dedicated Tumblr has been set up to keep track of the project and can be seen here.

"Once Upon a Time, an Egyptian Cat Was Put to Work" is the title of my latest piece, created as a contribution to the Nile Sunset Annex's show "What Are You Doing, Drawing?", which includes work by Mohammed Abdallah, Hady Anoukamar, Adham Bakry, Khaled Fahmy, Shayma Kamel, Betty Khoury, Ahmed Nagy, Sarah Rifky, Hanaa Safwat, Ahmed Shawky, Take to the Sea, James Wright, and Ayman.

Nile Sunset Annex is an art space in the Garden City district of Cairo started and managed by Hady Aboukamar, Taha Bilal, and Jennifer Evans in the comfort of my own apartment. It's quite nice. Here are some pictures from the opening night, February 23rd:

Here are some pictures I got from the work I showed at Apexart in NYC, in the show "Open Sesame" curated by Ola El-Khalidi. The work was created in response to material gathered by Ola relating to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in the August of 1990.

The following "portrait", written by Lorenz Pfrunder, was written about a year ago for Swedesh NZZ Folio. It's amazing to think a whole year has passed since then.

Ganzeer, 29, Künstler, Kairo
Der Rummel um Ganzeer begann mit den gigantischen Wandbildern, die er nach dem Sturz Mubaraks malte: ein Radfahrer, der auf seinem Kopf einen Korb voller Brot trägt und dem sich ein Panzer in den Weg stellt; riesengrosse Portraits der Märtyrer der Revolution. Ganzeers Maske der Freiheit wurde zur Ikone: Auf einem grellgelben Hintergrund sieht man den Torso eines nackten Mannes, der eine Maske aus Lederriemen trägt. Sie verschliesst ihm die Augen und verstopft ihm den Mund. An der Maske sind zwei winzige Flügel befestigt. Dazu steht im Stil eines Werbeplakats: «Neu: Die Maske der Freiheit. Ein Gruss vom Hohen Rat der Armee an die geliebten Söhne der Heimat. Jetzt erhältlich, für unbeschränkte Zeit.» Ganzeer beklebte damit die Stadt. Ein Passant fühlte sich provoziert, ein Verkehrspolizist rief die Militärpolizei, die ihn verhaftete.

Doch Ganzeer kam frei, ohne dass gegen ihn Anklage erhoben wurde. Dies habe sicher mit dem Druck zu tun, der auf das Militär ausgeübt worden sei, sagt Ganzeer. Über Facebook starteten seine Freunde eine Kampagne, bald hatten Tausende den gelben Sticker als ihr Profilbild eingestellt. Menschenrechtsgruppen, das Fernsehen und die Internetmedien berichteten darüber. Massgeblich zu seiner Freilassung beigetragen hätten aber auch «ein paar Telefonanrufe bei Leuten ganz oben im Militär». Andere hatten weniger Glück. Seit Beginn der Revolution wurden über 12 000 Zivilpersonen von Militärgerichten zu oft hohen Gefängnisstrafen verurteilt.

Wenn die Welt hoffnungsvoll von der «arabischen Jugend» spricht, meint sie Leute wie Ganzeer. Er ist einer der aufsehenerregendsten zeitgenössischen Künstler Ägyptens, und er macht sich seit Jahren Gedanken über die Missstände im Land. «Wir erkennen gerade, dass wir unter einer kapitalistischen Diktatur leben», sagt er. «Die Zwänge der kapitalistischen Logik lassen keinen Spielraum für individuelle Beteiligung.» Der junge Mann, der seinen bürgerlichen Namen für sich behalten will, denkt global, seine Hoffnung liegt im Internet, in der internationalen Vernetzung lokaler Gruppen. «Wir müssen uns auch im realen Leben in kleinen, gut vernetzten Gruppen organisieren. Wir können ein komplett neues System schaffen.» So spricht der 29jährige stundenlang.

Seine Theorien sind eine Mischung aus Marxismus und Science-Fiction. Er glaubt, unter der politischen Revolution Ägyptens sei eine viel bedeutendere gesellschaftliche Umwälzung im Gang. Es gehe um soziale Gerechtigkeit, die Emanzipation von Tradition und Familie, das Recht auf Mitsprache, ein neues Wirtschaftssystem. Ganzeer klagt die Generation seiner Eltern an: «Sie haben uns alle zu Autoritätshörigkeit und Apathie erziehen wollen. Insofern ist unsere Revolte ähnlich motiviert wie die westliche 68er Bewegung.»

Ganzeers Studio liegt im dritten Stock eines Gebäudes aus den 1920ern. Hier wohnt und arbeitet er zusammen mit einem Künstlerkollegen. Gedämpftes Licht sorgt für eine angenehme Stimmung, ein Elektroofen wärmt die Winterluft. Bilder sind gegen die Wände gelehnt. Im Regal stehen viele Comics, einige Bücher über Kunst und politische Theorien. Ganzeer trägt Wollsocken, stellt einen Plasticbecher mit Wasser auf den Tisch, man fühlt sich willkommen.

Ganzeer will kein Street-Artist sein, er wehrt sich auch gegen die Etiketten Grafiker, Illustrator, Künstler. «I just like to do stuff», sagt er in perfektem Englisch. Seit seine Graffiti berühmt geworden sind, hat er sogar aufgehört zu malen, weil er nicht in diese Schublade gesteckt werden will. Ausserdem sei er ohnehin pleite, Hunderte von Spraydosen könne er sich nicht mehr leisten. Auf einer weissen Wandtafel hat er mit Filzstift notiert, wem er Geld schuldet. 8700 Pfund (1370 Franken) sind es insgesamt.

Daneben stehen weitere Listen: Wen er anrufen, was er im Haushalt erledigen, was er für sein Onlinemagazin «Rolling Bulb» noch fertig machen muss. Auf dem Arbeitstisch liegen die Skizzen für einen Comicstrip, den er gerade für eine polnische Publikation zeichnet. Daneben arbeitet er an einem Filmplakat. Er hat Möbel entworfen und im Auftrag von Google eine arabische Schrift gestaltet. «Viel lieber würde ich mein eigenes Zeug machen, aber ich versuche gerade, irgendwie durchzukommen.»

Eine Diktatur der Militärjunta ist für Ganzeer die grösste Bedrohung für Ägypten. «Das Militär hat über Jahrzehnte die Gesellschaft infiltriert.» Es habe sich als Staatshüter aufgespielt, dabei sei es eine Partei mit einer politischen Agenda, wirtschaftlichen Interessen und unglaublich vielen Anhängern. Die Wahlen seien bloss ein Ablenkungsmanöver des Militärs, die Generäle hätten gewusst, dass Muslimbrüder und Salafisten gewinnen würden, und hätten sich mit ihnen arrangiert. Vor den Islamisten hat Ganzeer keine Angst. «Das sind Geschäftsleute, Mittelschicht und Mittelmass.»

Ab und zu geht Ganzeer noch auf den Tahrir. «Der Platz ist wichtig, aber ich wusste von Anfang an, dass mein Beitrag zur Revolution anderswo stattfinden muss. Ich fühle mich immer ein bisschen als Beobachter, wenn ich dort bin.» Wenn er dennoch hingeht, tut er verwirrende Dinge. Er stellt Urnen auf und verteilt Fragebogen, in denen Demonstranten nach ihren politischen Wünschen befragt werden. Ein echter Versuch von Basisdemokratie oder eine Persiflage auf die vom Militär inszenierten Wahlen? Vielleicht beides.

Auch nach dem Sturz von Mubarak bleibt Ganzeers Lebensstil vielen Ägyptern suspekt. Er lebt in einer WG, kurvt mit dem Fahrrad in der Stadt herum, trägt im Sommer kurze Hosen. Seine Freundin ist Deutschsyrerin, und manchmal geben sie sich auch in der Öffentlichkeit einen Kuss. «Viele halten mich für einen Ausländer», sagt Ganzeer. «Genau deshalb muss ich hierbleiben. Ich arbeite dafür, dass es normaler wird, anders zu sein.»

On Islam Abusers and Their Incitement to Violence

On October 27, I received this tweet by someone calling himself @Ibn_Salama on Twitter: "An Essay on Ganzeer (@Ganzeer) and Spreading Immorality Among Believers." The link lead to an article by Ibn Salama criticizing my art exhibition "The Virus is Spreading" from the viewpoint of a fanatical religious extremist. I replied to the article in this blogpost in Arabic, which was later picked up and translated by Amanda Rogers for Muftah.org.

عن المتأسلمين وتحريضهم على العنف

في يوم ٢٧ أكتوبر فوجئت بـ"تغريدة" من شخص يدعى "إبن سلامة" على الموقع الإجتماعي تويتر يقول فيها:

"مقال عن جنزير @Ganzeer وإشاعة الفاحشة في الذين آمنواhttp://aboutsalama.blogspot.com/2012/10/ganzeer-"

إندهشت من لغة هذه التغريدة. ولكني حقا صدمت عندما قرأت مقال الأستاذ سلامة، فلم يقابلني في حياتي هذا الكم من الغل. وخصوصا نوع فريد من الغل، منبعث تماما من عقلية في منتهى الجهل مشحونة من نفسية في منتهى المرض.

هيا بنا نقوم بتحليل مقال الإستاذ سلامة، الذي يقوم من خلاله بنقد معرضي الفني "الفيروس ينتشر" (١ أكتوبر - ١ نوفمبر ٢٠١٢) :

"لو كنا في دولة تحترم شرع خالقها لما تجرأ أمثال (جنزير Ganzeer) "فنان الشوارع والجرافيتي" أن يعرض أعماله "الفنية" الإباحية دون خوف عقاب أو توبيخ!.. لكن المأساة هي أننا في دولة يخشى مثقفوها من الشريعة وأحكام الإسلام، ويودون لو طمسوها من عقل كل مواطن مصري حتى يستريحوا."

حقا عجيب أن يرى إبن سلامة أن أي عمل فني لا يلائم وجهة نظره هو بمثابة عمل لا يستحق الوجود، ويجب صناعها ملاقاة العقاب والتوبيخ من الدولة. هنا يتهم إبن سلامة أي فنان مصري يقوم بعمل "غير إسلامي" بأنه شخص يود أن يطمس الإسلام من عقل كل مصري! من الواضح أن إبن سلامة غير مدرك أن تصريحاته هذه أكبر دليل على أنه هو وأمثاله هم من يودون طمس كل ماهو غير إسلامي من عقل كل مصري!

أو، ربما يكون مدركاً وفخور برغباته هذه. ولكن قوللي ياإستاذ سلامة: كيف يفرقك هذا النوع من التفكير عن المتذمتين بالغرب الذين يودون طمس الإسلام من أوروبا وغيرها؟ كيف بنا أن ندافع عن حق المسلمين بالغرب إن لم ندافع نحن عن حق غير المسلمين بالشرق؟

ألا ترى أن هذا نوع من الإزدواجية الظالمة في التفكير؟ عليك أن تتقبل ياإبن سلامة، أنت وأمثالك، أن مصر بطبيعتها وتاريخ شعبها، بلد تحتمل العديد من الديانات والتيارات. ليس من السليم أن تخاف من أي فكر لا ينطبق مع فكرك، إلا إذا نادى بوضع القيود على ممارساتك الشخصية. وهذا ياأستاذ سلامة ماتفعله أنت شخصيا: تنادي بوضع القيود على الفنانين، بل وعقابهم على فنهم.

أترك ياأخي الفنانين يرسمون ما بدهم. لا أحد يغصبك على أن تزور معارضهم. وإصنع ياأخي معارضك الفنية بالتيمات التي تراها مناسبة. لن يمنعك أحد، ولن يفرض عليك شخص أن ترسم شيء لاترغب في رسمه!

"لو كانت الحرية هي أن يرسم (محمد فهمي) - المعروف باسم (جنزير) - صورة فتاة بعرض الحائط وهي عارية إلا من الحجاب فسحقا لهذه الحرية المسمومة!.. لو حرية الرأي تجعله يسخر في "إبداعاته الفنية" من الشيخين ياسر برهامي وعبد المنعم الشحات، فقد حان الوقت لإعادة تعريف (حرية الرأي) بأنها الوقاحة و قلة الأدب وانعدام الحياء."

ياأخي الفاضل، هناك ناس يرون جمال في هذا الجسد العاري. ليس هناك أحد يغصب عليك زيارة المعرض أو زيارة موقعي الإلكتروني. إن كان الجسد العاري صدمة بالنسبة لك، فقم بزيارة معارض أخرى - مثل المتحف الإسلامي، فبه تحف وزخارف إسلامية آية في الجمال بعيدة كل البعد عن الأجساد العارية.

أما بالنسبة للشيخين هؤلاء، فأنا لا أعرف من هذا البرهامي ولم أرسمه في لوحاتي. أما الشحات فعليك أن تعلم أن ماهو معروض عنه في المعرض هو مجرد إنعكاس لآراء ناس عديدة في هذا الرجل. منع عرض مثل هذه اللوحات لن يغير واقع رأي هؤلاء الناس فيه. وبكل تأكيد حرية الرآي تحتوى التعبير عن الرآي من خلال الكلام والكتابة والموسيقى والرسم، حتى لو كان هذا الرأي يتضمن رأي وجهة نظر عن شخص ما. إن كان هذا الواقع الآدمي ثقيل على صدرك، فتستطيع الإنتقال إلى إحدى الدول الدكتاتورية الفاشية مثل أنجولا أو الكاميرون أو سوريا أو السعودية على سبيل المثال.

"ما نوعية أفراد تلك الطبقة "المثقفة" التي تتيح لشخص مثل هذا أن يبيع رسومه في (جاليري) بالزمالك مع علمهم أن بعضها يتعدى على مشاعر كل مسلم؟!.. هل المسألة مجرد تحدي للمسلمين واختبار قدر تحملهم لإهانة شعائرهم ومقدساتهم؟"

لا أعلم من أعطاك حق الكلام بالنيابة عن "كل مسلم" ياأستاذ سلامة، ولكني على دراية أنك خاطيء، فقد زار معرضي، بالطبع، العديد من المنتميين إلى الدين الإسلامي ولم يشعروا بأي ضيق من معرضي هذا. بل بالعكس، أعجبوا به جدا. ولا أعلم كيف قررت أنني أهنت شعائر ومقدسات الإسلام؟

الخطأ الكبير الذي تفعله هو أنك تتكلم دائما بالنيابة عن غيرك، ولا تتكلم بالنيابة عن نفسك فقط. وتظن أن أرائك الشخصية يجب أن تعمم على مستوى الدولة!! أما أمرك عجيب ياأخي.

"هل الفن يعني أن يرسم هذا (الجنزير الصدئ) لوحة لامرأة مسلمة محجبة في نصفها العلوي ومكشوفة الفرج والساقين في النصف السفلي؟.. لن أقول أين الإسلام، بل أين الذوق والأدب وأبسط مبادئ الحياء؟

"ما الاختلاف إذن بين تعدي الفرنسيين على المسلمات في الطرقات وتعدي مدعي الثورية والفن على المسلمات المصريات؟

"هل يكره هؤلاء الليبراليون أن شعب مصر عاد لدين ربه فيريدون أن يجعلوه فاسقا فاسدا شهوانيا وإباحيا مثلهم؟!

"إنهم - والله - ممن يحبون أن تشيع الفاحشة في الذين آمنوا، وكأن الحساسية تصيبهم كلما شاهدوا سيدة محتشمة أو شاب ملتح!"

وهنا تقع في فخ نقص المنطق ياإبن سلامة. كيف تشبهني بالفرنسيين الذين يعتدوا على حرية المسلمات في أوروبا، في حين أنت بمقالتك هذه، أنت الذي تتعدى على حرية ماتراه أنت غير إسلامي؟

سريعا وضعتني في قائمة "الليبراليون" وسريعا صورت هؤلاء الليبراليون في صورة محاربين الإسلام والتقوى. ياواد يامسلم، هل سمعت أبدا عن ليبرالي مصري يمنع مسلم من الصلاة؟ عمرك سمعت عن ليبرالية تهاجم مسلمة بمترو الأنفاق؟ هل حدث أبدا أن مجموعة من الليبراليون قد منعوا بناء مسجد؟ هل إنتقد أبدا شخص ليبرالي معرض فني ذو طابع إسلامي - بل وطالب بعقاب القائمين على المعرض؟ من أين يامسلم تأتي بكل هذا الظلم والشر؟ لا أحد يمنعك من ممارسة حياتك بالشكل الإسلامي الذي تراه، ولا يجوز أبدا أن تمنع أنت أحد من أن يعيش حسب معتقداته ومفاهيمه الشخصية. وخصوصا إن كنت ترى أن للمسلمين بالغرب حق ممارسة حياتهم بشكل إسلامي.

"لقد أظهروا لنا ما في قلوبهم المريضة، فمتى سنظهر لهم عاقبة أفعالهم؟!.. متى تعود النخوة حتى يخشى إخوان الشياطين من المجاهرة بإنحلالهم كما يفعلون اليوم؟"

قلوب مريضة؟ إخوان شياطين؟ وتريد معاقبتي كمان؟ لك أن تعلم أن هذا بلغة القانون ما يسمي بالتحريض على العنف. وبناءاً على مقالتك فقط أستطيع أن أقدم فيك بلاغا يؤدي بك في السجن لامحالة. فقضايا التحريض على العنف ليست هينة. مقالتك ياإبن سلامة تحتوي على لغة إرهابية في غاية الحدة، ولكن لأننا ولاد بلد سأفعل معك السليمة وسأطلب من الله تعالى أن يسامحك ويهدي قلبك الموبوء.

"الصورة لأحد حوائط المعرض قبل الانتهاء من رسمها. ويظهر فيها عامل نظافة يرسم شعار المذهب الأناركي الفوضوي لكن مع تحويره إلى كلمة (لا). والجدار الآخر يحمل صورة فتاة بلا ملامح ترتدي حجابا أسود وأحمر شفاه ويخرج من فرجها حبل سري طويل ينتهي بجنين."

من المذهل أنك لاتري الحياة! من المذهل أنك لا تستطيع رؤية جمال خروج الجنين من فرج المرأة! من المذهل أنك تصمم على رؤية فرج المرأة كشيء أبيح بدلاً من أن تراه مصدراً جميلاً من مصادر الحياة! ترى من فينا صاحب القلب المريض؟

"لكن يبدو أن إدارة المعرض لم تتحمل هذا القدر من الانحطاط لأنه في مواجهة الباب الزجاجي للمكان ويظهر بوضوح للمارة خارجه، فقام "الفنان" فتغطية الجزء العاري بطلاء أسود مع كتابة كلمة (عيب) عليه."

ومن الواضح أنك تتفق مع هذه الرؤية؟ بأن الحياة عيب؟ ولا نقول حرام أحسن؟

"ويظهر هنا أيضا رسم يصور الشيخ ياسر برهامي لكن مع لوحة تقول أن اللحية لا تساوي الإسلام."

ثاني مرة، لا أعلم من هذا البرهامي، ولكن هذه اللوحة لرجل إلتقيت به في إحدى المظاهرات، وأعجبت جدا بشخصيته الرزينة وحكمته الفائقة. أدركت أنه مسلم حقيقي حينما عبرلي عن وجهة نظره بأن اللحية بكل تأكيد لا تساوي القرآن أو الإسلام وليس دليلا بأي شكل من الأشكال على درجة إيمان الرجل. فأعجبني هذا الكلام وخصوصا أن هذا الرجل هو نفسه كان ملتحي، فقررت أن أصنع له هذه الرسمة وهو معه لوحة تقول أن "اللحية لا تساوي القرآن الكريم".

ولكن الظاهر كده إنك غير متفق مع كلامه وترى أن اللحية تساوي الإسلام مثلا؟

"وحملت جدران المعرض عدة بوسترات تصور الشيخ المهندس عبد المنعم الشحات وتحته كلمة (للوراء)!!"

مظبوط. أكيد كلمة "للأمام" غير جديرة لوصف شخص يفكر مثله. ولكن هذا عموما رأيي ورأي من شاركوني المعرض. لك حرية عمل معرض تعبر فيها عن أرائك المختلفة تجاه هذا الرجل.

"رسم لشخص مغمى العينين وهو يخيط شفتيه بخيط يحمل ثلاثة رموز: صليب وهلال ونجمة إسرائيل."

هذه ليست "نجمة إسرائيل" كما تزعم، ياإبن سلامة. هو رمز يدعى "نجمة داوود"، وهو رمز إتخذه اليهود أجمعين تعبيرا عن ديانتهم ووجد لقرون عديدة قبل ظهور دولة إسرائيل على وجه الأرض. يصبح الرمز "نجمة إسرائيل" فقط عندما يظهر باللون الأزرق على خلفية بيضاء.

"مسقط رأسي للكعبة والطائفين حولها. يسميها الفنان: الحرم. ووجودها في نفس المكان مع الصورة العارية هو شيء أقل ما يوصف به أنه استهانة بالإسلام وازدراء!.. هذا غير التشكيلات الخطية التي تظهر كلمة (محمد) على الجدران بخط الرقعة."

أمرك غريب ياأخي! فلا يعجبك أن أرسم ماتراه غير إسلامي ولايعجبك أن أرسم ماتراه إسلامي؟ وإن كنت ترى أن وجود ما هو إسلامي وسط ماهو غير إسلامي هو بمثابة إستهانة وإزدراء بالإسلام، فلم تدافع عن حق تواجد المسلمين وسط العلمانيين الأوروبيين؟

هل ننزع الجوامع الإسلامية من القارة الوروبية كنوع من الإحترام للإسلام؟

"لكن الطامة الكبرى كانت "عملا فنيا" يصور فتاة مسلمة محجبة تدعو الله وهي عارية أن يرزقها زوجا يجامعها!

لكن (جنزير) حاول إلغاز حروف الدعاء بحيث لا تظهر إلا بعد تدقيق وفحص، وبهذا يتجنب ردود أفعال الناس على فحش الألفاظ التي استخدمها!"

ما هذا الكم من الإندهاش؟ هل هو عجيب أن تتمنى فتاة مسلمة، عارية كانت أم مستورة، زوجا يجامعها بشكل يكفي حاجاتها الجنسية؟ هل تعتقد أنه شيء بعيد عن الواقع؟ بل بعيد عن واقع فتيات بلدك؟

إذن أنت مغيب ياأستاذ سلامة. ومع إحترامي لتحليلك لسبب إستخدامي إسلوب الكتابة هذا، فدعني أعرض عليك السبب الحقيقي، وهو سبب فني/فلسفي بحت: لقد أردت أن أضع المشاهد في موقف يجبره على التفحص والتدقيق لحل هذا اللغز، لأن هذه المشكلة التي يعاني منها الكثير من فتيات مصر أمر يحتاج إلى نوع من التدقيق لفهمه، وهو ليس بالأمر الهين.

ولكن حتى لو كان الأمر حقا مرتبط بهذا النوع من "تجنب ردود أفعال الناس"، لماذا يضايقك هذا؟ في أول مقالتك إتهمتني بالوقاحة وقلة الأدب وإنعدام الحياء. قوللي ياسلامة، أليس الحياء هو تجنب الوتر الحساس لدى المجتمع؟

يعني إنت لا الصراحة العارمة عجباك ولا الألغاز عجباك! هل سمعت عن مرض نفسي يدعى الشيزوفرينيا؟

"أين محامو الإخوان المسلمين الذين كانوا يتصدون - قبل الوصول للحكم - لهذه التعديات الفاضحة على مشاعر المسلمين؟.. لماذا لم ترفع قضية ازدراء أديان على هذا الفنان "الثوري" حتى الآن؟

"الله المستعان."

إليك بعض المعلومات الهامة: "الإخوان المسلمون" هو في الواقع حزب يرأسه العديد من رجال الأعمال الإنتهازيين الذين يقومون بأعمالهم من خلف ستار ديني، ولا يهمهم إلا مصالحهم المادية. يعني بإختصار كده.. هم أقرب لكفار قريش (الذين تاجروا بإسم الدين) عن مؤيدي محمد -عليه الصلاة والسلام- فلا تنتظر منهم نصرة دينك. أما قضايا إزدراء الأديان، فأعلم أنها تنطبق فقط في حالة الإهانة المباشرة للديانة، ولا تنطبق علي صنع شيء غير متماشي مع تعاليم الديانة في العموم. بمعني: لو رسمت فتاة نصف عارية ونصف مستورة، فهذا ليس له علاقة بالدين. أما إذا رسمت الرسول -عليه الصلاة والسلام- في هيئة إرهابي، فهذا يعتبر إزدراء بالأديان. أفهمت؟

قضيتك خسرانة، ياأخ سلامة، أما قضيتي أنا -إن أردت صنع قضية- فهي بكل تأكيد ناجحة - مع تطفلك وسطوك على الحرية الشخصية للآخرين وحثك وتحريضك على العنف والعقاب. ولكني سأتخذ أكثر إجراء سلمي وحنون ممكن أن يتخذ وسأدعو الله أن يسامحك ويخبط رأسك خبطة تجعل عقلك العمل بشكل سليم إن شاء الله يارب.

من الملاحظات المثيرة التي شدت إنتباهي في الفترة الأخيرة أن الأغلبية العارمة من المتأسلمين، ومعظمهم منتميين إلى التيارات السلفية، عندهم نوع من أنواع "الرادار" الذي لا يستطيع أن يلتقط إلا من يعيشون على غير هوى المتأسلمين بشكل سلمي وفي حالهم تماما. بل، ونقد هؤلاء ومحاولة التدخل في أبسط أمورهم الشخصية.

أما المشاكل الحقيقية في بلادنا مما يتعلق بالفساد السياسي والإقتصادي، بما يتعلق بمشاكل التخطيط، والمواصلات العامة، والمخالفات المعمارية، بإنهيار الزراعة، والفشل الذريع في إدارة شئون البلاد - كل هذه المشاكل الحقيقية والملموسة في بلادنا، والتي تحتاج إلى حلول جذرية من نوع إبتكاري.. فأصدقائنا المتأسلمين والسلفيين ينقصهم القدرة على رؤية كل هذا بسبب فيضان من الأمراض الشهوانية النفسية التي إجتاحت قلوبهم وسيطرت على عقولهم.

Don Karl, a graffiti writer, co-organiser of the Common Ground Gallery in Berlin, and publisher, will present the research from his publication Arabic Graffiti (From Here To Fame, 2011) and artist and activist Ganzeer will talk about his activities in Cairo. Fred Meier-Menzel will introduce the research project Campaigning Cairo, which addresses the 2011 election campaign in Egypt by questioning the underlying political and aesthetic strategies of representation.

The Westchester Guardian has published a rather flattering article about my work written by Sherif Awad. Here's an excerpt:

Ganzeer’s artistry was always linked to controversy. He remembered that one of the early covers he designed for Campus generated a lot of discussion in the media because it was the first to reflect presidential succession through entailment in the Arab world. It was the year 2000 when Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had just come to power, while in Egypt, rumors started to circulate about Gamal Mubarak who was endorsed in some Egyptian media to be the successor to his father Hosni Mubarak.The cover illustrated by Ganzeer caught the eyes of Amr Adeeb, the loud host of the popular talk show al-Kahera al-Youm (Cairo Today) on Orbit Network.

I couldn't manage to photograph everything before dismantling the shot, but this is more or less the majority of the work. Its really difficult to properly document this show, as the experience it was intended to be very spatial.

The Virus is Spreading: Opening Night

Described by Cairo360's Tanya El Kashef as a "candy shop for street-art lovers" and by Scoop Empire's Kareem El-Shaffei as "reflecting on topics closer to the general public rather than the typical gallery crowd," I think its safe to say that my show "The Virus is Spreading" at Safarkhan Art Gallery was a stellar success, despite its acknowledged shortcomings as pointed out in Mariam Hamdy's vicious review.

Although the show didn't come out exactly as I'd envisioned, its close enough. Since the show opened, I'd actually been visiting the gallery to finish things up the way I want, but with the month and the show quickly coming to I close, I've decided it's time to take off them gloves and give up. The best part was seeing ecstatically amazed crowds in and around the gallery on opening night.

Also, when still int he process of putting the show together, I couldn't help but notice the look of awe and confusion on the faces of passers by, very similar to the look I'd see on the public's faces when creating my very first public mural. Now that was the most satisfying of all.

"The Virus is Spreading" would, of course, not be the same without the spontaneous contributions of these very fine guest artists: Nadim, Shank, El Teneen, Al Okasha, Maghraffiti, Hady Kamar, Annie Rebekah Gardner, Shabana, Mohammed Said, and Sad Panda! Thanks, y'all!

I'll be sure to post clearer shots of the actual artwork soon. Do stay tuned.

Mural in Switzerland Confronts Public with the Ethics of Arms Exports

I've just received some pretty dope aerial photographs of the mural I created for Theaterfestival Basel. And I gotta say... I'm pretty blown away!

You can probably guess that all the "dead bodies" were illustrated with the volunteering assistance of the audience. This, I think, gave the mural a certain performative quality that I feel was necessary what with the mural being part of a Theaterfestival at all.

Created in the courtyard of the Keserne Basel, a former militry base, the subject matter, I think is also quite relevant. Getting the audience to actually "become the victims" by volunteering to lay on the floor, I think adds more to the concept and gives "audience participation" an entirely new meaning.

Press Release: The Virus Is Spreading

Over the last 10 days I've been posting a series of obscure images accompanied by the text "The Virus is Spreading," visually laying down the conceptual groundwork for my upcoming show at Safarkhan Gallery in Zamalek (Cairo, Egypt). The images do not represent the actual work to be seen at the show, but you can say they're sort of a visual introduction to the show.

Opening on October 1st, the show is titled... "The Virus is Spreading."

"What virus?" you ask? Well, lets think about this word, "virus", what does it really mean?

The virus: a small infectious agent with replicating abilities. Since a virus typically starts out small, those uninfected by said virus tend to see it as a threat that can be contained or squandered. The way of life before the appearance of the virus must be maintained.

The virus can be used as an analogy to anything that shakes up The Establishment. Any establishment. Be it the Political Establishment, the Social Establishment, the Cultural Establishment, the Religious Establishment, or the Art Establishment, there will always be a small opposition at work that the Establishment isn’t too happy with.

The methods to containing a virus vary. Typically, The Establishment will first look into crushing any opposition. Within Political contexts this could be the use of violent force. Within Religious establishment, this could be done by expiation. And within Artistic contexts, this can be done via belittlement.

If that doesn’t work, the Establishment will pretend to adopt the opposition. Or in viral terms, the uninfected will pretend to be infected, and the virus loses interest in fulfilling its mission to the very end. So Politically, The Establishment will pretend to agree with the opposition and it will pretend it is taking drastic changes in accomplishing the oppositions needs. Religiously, The Establishment will pretend its acceptance of the other religion, or the complete adoption of the other religion even. Artistically, the Establishment will pretend to express interest in the newborn art-form without letting it shake up the core values of the Establishment.

This viral analogy cannot be more obvious than in the case of Egypt’s current “post-revolutionary” climate. Indeed, we are in an obvious phase of pretend-adoption, void of any traces of true change. But just enough of a pretense to put revolutionary fervor to sleep, with all its possibilities of social, economic, and cultural change. There seems to be little to no sign of it right now.

A virus only seems impossible to crush when vital cells are infected. Any anti-viral will act against infected cells and in-turn weaken the entire human body until its final demise. For the virus to truly prevail it must infect vital ranks within The Establishment. Take, for example, The Free Officers recruiting Major-General Mohammed Naguib for their 1952 military coup. Or Constantine I’s conversion to Christianity and how that aided in the spread of the religion across the ancient world. Or take Pablo Picasso’s adoption of Cubism and collage-techniques… and how that changed the art establishment forever.

I see some signs of conversion within the Egyptian Establishment. Be it socially, politically, culturally, or artistically. Which is why I have faith that the virus is spreading. And there’s no stopping it.

Be sure to check out issue #43 of World War 3 Illustrated, featuring my art on the back cover.

Founded in 1980 by Seth Tobocman and Peter Kuper, World War 3 Illustrated has been publishing critical political comics, graphics, and stories ever since.

The art piece, titled Finger of Defiance, was first used on the cover of Zine El-Arab #1, and was also available on t-shirts through my online shop. And for the trivia lovers... the hand was actually modeled by my good friend and wicked cartoonist Nidal ElKhairy from Amman, Jordan.

من أروع المقالات التي كتبت عن فن الجرافيتي كتبها الكاتب الصحفي أحمد ناجي بمجلة أخبار الأدب في عدد يونيو ٢٠١١

تبدأ المقالة من أول البدايات المدهشة للجرافيتي العجيب بكوبري الميرغني بحي مصر الجديدة سنة ٢٠٠٧، وتنتهي حيث الجرافيتي الثوري بوسط البلد سنة ٢٠١١

جنزير، موفا، التنين، ملكة جمال الأزاريطة كلها ليست أسماء خيالية، بل ألقاب لفنانين شباب يمثلون أيقونات المشهد الفني المصري الآن. أعمال هؤلاء الفنانين لن تجدها في جاليرهات يرتادها أصحاب رابطات العنق، ولا في قاعات عرض وزارة الثقافة. أعمالهم ستجدها معروضة في جاليري كبير ومفتوح اسمه المدينة. ستجد أعمالهم على جدران القاهرة، الإسكندرية، أسيوط وربما مدن مصرية آخري. اختار هؤلاء الفنانين الجدران العامة مكانا للعرض ورجل الشارع العابر جمهوراً لهذا العرض.

هذا فن ينتشر في المدن المصرية ويحمل اسم “الجرافيتى”. يقوم به في الغالب أشخاص مجهولون، وفنانون لا يضعون توقيعاً بجانب أعمالهم. كل ما يطمحون فيه هى تلك اللذة السرية في التواصل المباشر مع الجمهور وفي إعادة تلوين وجهه مدينتهم. في مقابل جهات رسمية كجهاز التنسيق الحضاري تدعى الحفاظ على وجهه المدينة ولا تقدم إلا إعادة طلائه كله باللون الأصفر كأننا في مدينة مريضة. نحاول في هذا الملف الوقوف على تفاصيل مشهد “الجرافيتى” في مصر، والتعرف على الاتجاهات الرئيسية في هذا الفن كمفتح للاقتراب من روح المدينة المصرية الجديدة.
