At this time of year, I always purchase a new plant variety I've never tried before. And, if I'm satisfied with its performance next summer, I'll purchase a couple additional plants to create a bigger impact in my garden the following fall.

Last year I purchased a Royal Standard hosta...I was hesitant because hostas don't fare well in my hot and humid climate, but they guaranteed me this variety would grow in my zone 9 garden. Wal-Mart is known for their low prices, and now they've come up with a great "site to store" program that offers free shipping. It works especially great on heavy items such as arbors, patio furniture and lawn equipment.

You simply visit Wal-Mart's Web site and browse their extenstive selection of items, purchase the item(s) you're looking for and have it shipped to the store nearest you for pick-up - and you pay NO SHIPPING COSTS!

I've used it several times, previously to buy a trelles and last week when I purchased two patio chairs that were on sale. The highlight of this program for me is that I am able to choose from a larger selection than is available in their store, but yet I don't have to pay a hefty shipping cost.

Spread the four flaps and plant in well-prepared soil or potting mix. Then cut off the flowers and cut back the stems by about one-third to encourage the plant to take root faster. Water frequently.

Great for collecting rainwater for use on container or ground plantings.

Here are some additional tips for reducing your water usage.

* Repair leaks in your outdoor hoses and faucets. Add a spray nozzle with a shut off valve to your hose, and shut the water flow off as needed when you’re in the garden.

* Water plants and lawn in the early morning hours to reduce water loss from evaporation.

* Add super-absorbent hydrogel crystals to container plantings to help retain moisture and reduce daily waterings.

* Add organic matter such as compost to your planting holes to help plants retain water.

* Use soaker hoses or drip irrigations systems (with a timer) when possible to reduce water loss from evaporation. They use 25% to 50% less water than sprinklers.

* Place mulch around plants to help retain water in the soil. It’s one of the most efficient ways to prevent moisture loss in the soil.

* Collect rainwater in a rain barrel to water indoor and outdoor plants.

* Replace dead plants with drought-tolerant varieties. Join Home Depot’s Garden Club and receive money-saving coupons for plants and products.
