Many times, even I make mistakes and end up choosing the wrong keywords. The goal is to find keywords that pay a lot of money per click and that have the highest level of search queries (traffic) with lowest amount of competition. Sounds easy, right? Well, like I said… It’s a little tricky and it takes time to become proficient.

The second part after finding the right keywords crossing your fingers and hoping that the domain name is available that has your exact keywords or keyword phrase packed inside it. If it doesn’t, then your chances of ranking in Google for those keywords are reduced.

The third part is writing really good content based on the chosen keywords you have decided to target and designing a very nice looking site that is friendly for people while also friendly for getting AdSense clicks. All this can be summarized into five elements needed in order to be successful with earning money using Google AdSense.

• Available Domain Name With Keyword Match
• Resources For Writing Excellent Content

You might think that I use expensive software and tools for finding targetable keywords. I really don’t! The software and tools I use are free and are available for anyone to use. As strange as it may seem, Google actually provides all of these tools. There are four Google tools I use for hunting down keywords to use with building AdSense sites. These tools are as follows:

• Google AdWords Keyword Tool
• Google AdWords – Traffic Estimator
• Google Insights For Search
• Google Search Results Page

The Keyword Tool gives me an idea of the keyword level of competition, number of monthly searches, and a list of alternative keyword ideas. The Traffic Estimator gives me an idea on how much money advertisers are paying per click and the estimated number of daily clicks they receive. Insights For Search gives me a graphical comparison of the amount of interest between sets of different keywords.

With Insights, I will plug in a keyword known to be HOT such as sex, cancer, money, war, Iraq, etc. as the control and compare the level of interest against the potential keywords I want to target. Insights For Search gives me another means for estimating traffic volume. Additionally, is has a section that brings up eventful highlights and news pertaining to keywords which immediately give me a source for researching the topic in preparation for writing quality content and creating quality outbound links to external sources.

Lastly, I use the SERP to research my competition. I will investigate each site ranked on the front page. I want know know who I am competing with. If I discover that the competition are major sites (i.e. CNN.com, Microsoft.com, ESPN.com, etc.) I may decide to walk away from the campaign and start over.

And That’s How It’s Done…

Choosing the right keywords to target for earning money with Google AdSense doesn’t involve purchasing expensive software and tools. It doesn’t involve joining various paid membership programs. It really just involves equipping yourself with the right FREE tools available from Google, and learning how to use them effectively.

I haven’t had much time for blogging lately. Or rather… I haven’t had much time to write further about Internet marketing and making money online. What’s at hand is the fact that I have many interests in life. And writing about profiting on the Internet isn’t the only thing I enjoy writing about. But, because I put barriers on this site, I’ve been limited with writing about other topics that I enjoy.

Honestly, keyword research is largely a talent that comes natural in your way of thinking. The best way I explain this is using the movie Twister. I hope that you have seen it… if not, you should. It’s a classic. Basically, in the movie there’s a guy named Bill. He’s a weatherman, but has a natural instinct to predict when and where tornados will land. The plot of the movie was basically about a race to see which one of two teams could successfully drop their weather machine in the path of a tornado to collect untapped data. Bill and his team was very raw, intuitive, and broke. The other team had boat loads of money and technology at their disposal. Not trying to spoil the movie, but long story short, Bill’s team won! And that’s largely how keyword research is.

The free tools, many provided by Google, are largely vague, and other tools that cost money, such as Micro Niche Finder, tend to vary quite a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I am not DOWNING any of these tools, especially the free ones. But, it’s definitely a problem that I have noticed over the years. And it’s a problem that could either make you or break you, depending on how much of buffer you have for building sites that fail to generate decent money. And just like Bill from Twister, you really have to have a natural instinct for knowing where to drop your weather machine. In other words, which keywords you’re going to choose to invest your time and money on developing sites.

That said, I really can’t teach you how to be intuitive, but what I can do is teach you a little trick that might enable you to start seeing the bigger picture about keywords and the amount of traffic you can predict to receive if you build. The tip is really SIMPLE and it will deliver a personalized and unique metric for how much traffic certain keyword phrases and topics receive in Google. The trick, however, is to actually KNOW or feel CONFIDENT of the amount of traffic a certain keyword phrase already receives. When you have that, then you have established what I call a constant in the keyword traffic equation. The only thing you need now is a tool that allows you to graph out and compare the keyword phrase against the constant. That tool is called Google Insights.

Now here’s the thing though… Google specifically states that Insights does not reveal the number of searches for keywords queried. Instead they compare the number against the total number of searches for over time, and compare the results on a scale graph from 0 to 100.

The numbers on the graph reflect how many searches have been done for a particular term, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. They don’t represent absolute search volume numbers, because the data is normalized and presented on a scale from 0-100. Each point on the graph is divided by the highest point, or 100. Google kind of screwed up a little bit though, because all that’s needed to figure out the amount of searches keywords receive is a constant. Once you have a constant, you can enter that into the graph, then enter the terms you want to discover, and then compare the difference using the 0-100 scale. Does this make sense? Again, this will not be precise, but I believe the results will give you a more accurate representation of what to expect, compared to the results other tools give you. Here’s a few examples.

Let’s use John Chow as the constant. We all know that he’s popular, and can easily generalize how much traffic he has. Also, quickly I want to address something. Some people might say that using John Chow as the constant isn’t a good idea because it’s possible that his ranking in Google suffers from a banning a couple years ago. But here’s the thing… it doesn’t matter if he’s banned or not. We’re not concerned with that. What we’re concerned with is the number of times people search for John Chow on Google. Based on his level of popularity, we can’t really predict an actual number, but instead we can “feel it”. We know him well, we know the amount of daily activity his blog receives, therefore we have a general “felling of what to expect” from his blog. This is what I call the intuitive control or instinctive constant. Now, let’s compare John Chow to something. How about Salt Water Fish Tanks?

On a scale from 0-100, John Chow scored a 30. On the same scale, Salt Water Fish Tanks scored 33. So basically, if you were to build a website targeting the keyword phrase Salt Water Fish Tanks, and assuming you were successful gaining top rank, you can assume or expect to receive as much traffic to your website as John Chow receives to his. Again, while this isn’t true science, it’s more or less “feeling” your way through the data.

Just how popular is the search term John Chow? Well, that all depends on what search term you’re comparing it to. If compared to Salt Water Fish Tanks, it’s about the same. If compared to George Bush, it doesn’t even register on the scale.

Using Google Insights with this mentality will give you a very accurate scope on search traffic, and which keywords you should invest your time and money on, and which keywords you should drop off your list. The great thing about this tool is that it allows you to see the big picture on things both big and small. In other words, we all know that John Chow is popular. But in reality he is only as popular as a salt water fish tank and doesn’t even register against George Bush. This is Google Insights… a tool if used correctly, can significantly help you in your journey towards building profitable websites and blogs for profit based on keywords you research.

But that’s okay, because when I say that I am rebuilding and starting over from scratch, I really mean that! The great news about this situation is that I have learned a lot from the first round of sites I started building in 2007. We’ll call those sites, Empire of Conn Generation I.

Long story short, looking back on the four years of websites I built, I see a lot of mistakes that were made. And just like everyone else, I tend to get upset when I make mistakes. However, after mistakes have been made, and after my anger subsides, usually I recap the events that took place and learn from the experience. And that’s exactly what I am doing today.

On May 2th, 2007 I unveiled a simple, effective, and EASY way to make money online simply by building multiple websites that each generate a minimum of $1 dollar per day. Back then, the concept was RAW form. In fact, I was still using blogger and didn’t have, or even KNOW about, the tools available for keyword research. Four months later, September of 2007, I released a second post reiterating the $1 dollar per day concept. For three years, I built site after site after site. It was a complete success, but it was also too a hard battle that eventually would have come to an end regardless of divorce, personal problems, etc… Eventually my mistakes would have caught up to me naturally. It was coincidental that I got burned out and just let everything die on the vine.

Guess what? It’s almost 2011, four years later. The concept still applies. The only differences is that building a new empire of sites will be much easier than the before, and each site built has the potential to earn even more. Most importantly, I have recognized the mistakes made prior, I have four years of experience, and I have amazing tools at my disposal (all free by the way). Empire of Conn Generation II is going to be surreal. My aim build twice as fast as I did back in 2007. I also intend to earn double, if not triple the amount per site.
