Notre Dame Prep (my mom, aunts, and, more recently, cousins Lexie and Yeardley’s alma mater) in Baltimore, MD has set up a fund to build a new turf field in Yeardley’s name. In addition, for every dollar raised, one dollar will be donated for a scholarship to be created in Yeardley’s name.

Yards loved NDP and loved playing lacrosse. Every donation helps her wonderful, generous spirit live on in a place that she truly loved.

My boy with Virginia Tech’s Ryan Williams. What a class act! He was great with all the kids - smiles and sincere appreciation for each little Hokie fan who lined up for his autograph and a photo. The Hokies couldn’t ask for a better ambassador. The rushing and touchdown records don’t hurt either. Or so I’m told.

I was on campus today with Albert for a video/photo shoot and we decided to stick around the Drill Field to get some photos of students during class changes to use in future photo slide shows or Web features. I took more than 200 pictures and then pulled out about 10 of my favorites.

This photo is of a student who obviously is a member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. We do a lot of video work in our department, but not a lot of photography, because the university has a brilliant photography staff. However, we are broadening our horizons and it’s nice to be able to go out and take some quick photos to help us tell the awe-inspiring stories about Virginia Tech and how we’re making a difference in today’s world.

I took this one, too.

In 1938, Nicholas Winton helped 669 Jewish kids escape certain death from the Nazis. He never told anyone that he did this.

While on ski trip in Switzerland, Winton took a detour in Czechoslovakia to help the children of refugees. Nazi Germany had recently annexed a large part of Czechoslovakia and the news of Kristallnacht, a violent attack on Jews in Germany and Austria, had just reached Prague.

Winton set up a rescue operation for the children, filling out the required paperwork for them to be sent to homes in Sweden and Great Britain. He had to raise money to fund foster homes for all of them, and then he sent 669 children away from Czechoslovakia on trains before the Nazis closed down the borders.

Winton told no one that he did this, not even his wife. In 1988, his wife found a scrapbook full of pictures of the children and letters from parents in their attic. She arranged to have Winton’s story appear in newspapers.

Many of the children Winton saved went on the BBC television program, That’s Life, to meet him for the first time since the war. They refer to themselves as “Winton’s children”.

Winton is now 101 years old and has received awards from Israel and the Czech Republic as well as Knighthood from the Queen of England in 1993.

… just remember that there are people out there who are possess a seemingly infinite capacity for their compassion, their concern and their humanity.

Then use that reassurance as inspiration as you strive to emulate them.

Holy Smokes! Google now lets you make phone calls directly from your Gmail inbox! And did I mention that all calls to the U.S.A. and Canada are FREE! You probably need a free Google Voice number for this to work, because when I tested it out, the caller ID came up as my GV #. Happy dialing - now there’s no excuse not to call your parents.
