Household Heating Tips Turn your heating on only when its needed. Contrary to the popular …

Household Heating Tips
Turn your heating on only when its needed. Contrary to the popular belief that you should leave your heating on low all day, you will in fact save more energy by only turning it on when it’s needed.
Turn down your thermostat. By simply turning down your thermostat can make a significant impact to your heating bill. By reducing your thermostat by just one degree you can save up to £90 on your heating bills each year.
Layer up. During the colder months of the year, wear an extra layer of clothing and put an extra blanket on your bed to help avoid having to turn your heating up.
Use your curtains. Something really simple and effective but often forgotten about is opening your curtains on a sunny day. This will essentially heat your house for free, but also remember to close them to keep the heat in once it goes dark.
Go smart. Smart thermostats and wireless heating controls will help you better understand your energy consumption and enable you to heat your home whenever and wherever. By using smart heating technology, you could potentially save £150 a year on your heating bills and significantly reduce your household energy footprint.
Make sure your boiler stays efficient. Your boiler efficiency is crucial to the amount of energy your household is using. By having your boiler serviced regularly you’ll ensure is stays efficient and helps keep your heating bills down. It’s also worth noting that a boilers lifespan is around 10-15 years, so if your boiler is older that this then you perhaps consider a new more efficient boiler.
Fix your heater with radiator valves. By adding radiator valves to your heaters you will have more control over how your home is heated. Radiator valves control the level of water that flows through your heaters, so you can make your least used rooms cooler by reducing that water flow this will in turn reduce energy consumption.
Use your hot water storage cylinder thermostat wisely. If you have a water cylinder with a thermostat, keep it set to around 60 degrees Celsius; a higher temperature is unnecessary for most homes and will only waste energy.

Insulation
Insulate your hot water cylinder. By insulating your hot water cylinder and pipes, you can ensure that the water inside stays hot for as long as possible. This means you won’t use so much electricity heating it up if it cools before you can use it. You can buy an insulation jacket for a water cylinder for as little as £15. Pipe insulation costs around £10 and can be purchased from any local DIY store.
Seal up your energy leaks. Most houses will often lose heat due to draughts. A draught could be anything from gaps in the floor, windows or even the chimney and by doing some simple DIY you can sealing up these leaks and save up to £35 a year on utility bills.
Loft insulation. As heat rises it’s easy to understand why a quarter of heat is lost through the roof on an uninsulated home. Loft insulation is a relatively cheap way of effectively reducing heat loss in your home and reducing your energy bills. For example, a semi-detached house can expect to see £140 a year savings on its energy bill with loft insulation.
Keep your doors closed. Simple yet effective. Keeping your doors closed in your home will make sure heat is trapped and rooms will stay warmer for longer. Just remember to turn your radiator down to avoid any damp or condensation problems.
Window Insulation. With 18% of heat lost through windows in a single glazed house by installing double glazing you can help drastically reduce this. With Argon gas at its centre which acts as an effective insulator, double glazing will help keep your home warmer and quieter whilst help reduce your energy bills. For those on a tight budget, you can buy window film kits for around £10 which you place over your window and will help with reducing heat loss.

General Appliance and Energy Tips
No more standby mode. By turning your electrical appliances off from the plug rather than on the device could potentially save you £30 a year.
Compare energy providers. Competition in the energy market is a good thing. Use a tariff compare website and see if you can get a lower energy tariff with a new provider, granted this won’t reduce your energy consumption but it might make a significant impact to your utility bills.
Switch to LED light bulbs. Replacing your halogen light bulbs is a relatively cheap way to trim down your electricity usage and could save you up to £35 a year.
Try to avoid electric heating. In certain areas in the UK electricity can cost up to 4x that of gas. If possible, switch your energy supplier from electric to gas. If you aren’t eligible for gas, consider a ground source heat pump; whilst potentially expensive to install they can make a significant impact on your energy consumption and will certainly reduce your utility bills by £100s each year.

Ok it looks like winter is here with a vengeance, this is the time that your boiler condense pipes are going to freeze solid causing your boiler to stop working, if this happens to you, check the plastic pipe that comes from the bottom of your boiler and runs externally usually to a drain or waste pipe, pouring warm water, not boiling! Over this pipe will usually defrost it causing the the blocked water to run freely away and allowing your boiler to work correctly. If you still can’t defrost the pipe give us a call and we will be happy to help, our professional engineers can use a number of other options to get your heating up and running.
