Our menus for the evening were headed: ‘Romantic Wilderness Dining’ and ‘Nature Is Delicious Here’. Each a perfectly apt tagline for the beautiful location and cuisine available at Log Haven right now. The menu in question was from a recent menu launch I attended at the scenic restaurant, showcasing the summer creations of chef David Jones.

Fans of Jones’ cuisine will no doubt find plenty to lap up in the recent menu revamp. The Southwestern fuel in Jones’ kitchen fire, shows most strikingly in the meat department – try this dish on for size: Serrano chile pasta loaded with duck crackling, habanero cheddar, mango salsa and chipotle butter – wow.

The whole menu is packed with similarly big, bold flavors – even in places you might not normally expect; Grilled calamari comes perfumed with a billowing campfire smokiness and a quinoa crusted salmon gets close and personal with juicy honey glazed pork belly. These aren’t shrinking violets of dishes, and nor should they be amongst the rugged, beautiful terrain of Millcreek canyon.

If you’re looking for a break from the inevitable rising temperatures of the valley, or looking to treat that special someone, Log Haven should be at the top of a very short list. In addition, the restaurant has some cool specials in effect. The restaurant’s dog days of summer event is in full swing for your canine pal, plus one particular early bird special is not to be missed: Southwestern caesar salad, pan seared prime center cut top sirloin, glace de veau, mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetable & served with Maine lobster tail and drawn butter – all for $27.50 before 6:30 p.m.

From left to right, Log Haven’s new summer menu (click images for larger versions):

* Panko Dusted Dungeness Crab Cake: shrimp, jalapeno mousseline, corn puree, kale slaw, smoked serrano aioli

* Polenta – Fontina Gratin: sunny side egg, house pancetta, spicy fried tomato sauce

* Grilled Calamari – Cerignola Olive Mignonette: smoked tomato coulis, capers, lemon mayonnaise, garlic crouton

Celebrating garden goodness and the start of the farmer’s market season, Oasis Cafe’s Chef de Cuisine Efren Nicholas has created four three-course specials that change weekly, each for just $25. His light summer offerings reflect the best of what’s available from local farms, ranches and fisheries. On Monday evenings, the price drops to $20 for his “Somebody’s got a case of the Mondays!” tribute.

“Mondays are bad enough,” said Will Keesen, general manager. “When they fall in June with perfect weather while we’re cooped up in our offices, everybody is bound to have a ‘Case of the Mondays.” We have the perfect cure….garden fresh goodness and an amazing $20 deal on Mondays for three courses under the stars on our newly opened courtyard patio.”

The weekly three-course $25 ($20 Mondays)menu features:

May 27 – June 2

June 3 – June 9

Sip and Savor

On May 14th, Bambara turned their attention to beer pairings for the first time as part of their seasonal educational series held in the Vault Bar. In honor of American Craft Beer Week – Kevin Crompton (Epic Brewing Company’s brewmaster) was on hand to talk about the Epic beer pairings selected by chef Nathan Powers, for a trio of delicious dishes. I was lucky enough to attend and sample both of their stellar efforts.

The concept behind the infrequent sip and savor event is a fun one. Forget those long, drawn out wine dinners, evenings that meander for hours and cost an arm and a leg. Instead, enjoy a quick, insightful after work pairing setup. On this particular evening three courses and three pairings were a downright bargain at $20 in total. The menu ran as follows (click pictures for larger images):

* Wild California King Salmon Tartare, Coriander Creme Fraiche, Orange peel paired with Epic Wit Beer

* Roasted Duck, Raspberry BBQ, Corn Puree, Fresh Raspberries paired with Epic Brainless on Raspberries

* Oregon Smokehouse Blue, Turkish Dates, Marcona Almonds paired with Epic Smoked and Oaked

I am certain I wasn’t the only one in attendance who learned something new on the evening. I was especially fascinated to hear more from brewer Kevin Crompton. Before the evening I won’t lie that I’ve been skeptical in the past over some of their item’s high pricing. After getting to understand the mentality and ethos of the company (identical margins on every beer, with the end price reflecting the ingredients used), not to mention the brewing process, I’m a convert.

The delicately balanced Brainless On Raspberries was a perfect example of their craft, not the least bit cloying as the name might first lead you to believe; deceptively easy drinking considering the nigh on 10% ABV and a slam dunk pairing with oh so sweet roasted duck breast from Bambara. The Raspberry puree used to flavor this Belgian ale, making up 2/3 of the ingredient cost alone.

Of course, it goes without saying that the appreciation of Epic’s brews was made all the easier by Bambara’s excellent cuisine. The three dishes from chef Nathan Powers all hit the mark – reminding me again, I need to make Bambara a more regular stop on my dining adventures.

SLC Bites 3: Bitters and bites

The third SLC Bites event took place on May 5th at The Leonardo. Aptly named Bitters and Bites, the focus of the event was six handcrafted cocktails – put together by half a dozen of Salt Lake’s finest mixologists. Mixologist/restaurant/cocktails were as follows:

Scott Gardner
Finca
Already Dead: Aged Jamaican Rum, 151 Rum, Green Chartreuse, Don’s Mix 2, Pineapple, Lime, Mint, Tiki Bitters

Ryan Manning
Takashi
Dutch Bicycle: Genever, Green Chartreuse, Chamomile, Meyer Lemon

Matt Pfohl
Pallet
Parral: Vida Tequila Anejo, Punt e Mes, Aperol, Orange Blossom Water, Boker’s Bitter

Sean Neves
Wild Grape
Gin Soda: Gin, Aperol Demerra, Lime, Vanilla

Jimmy Santangelo
Copper Onion
Pickles-n-Pimm’s: Hendrick’s Gin, Pimm’s No.1 Liquor, Dill Simple Syrup, Lemon Juice

Amy Eldredge
Bar-X
Kentucky Roselle: Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Hibiscus-Infused Simple Syrup, Fresh Lemon, Angostura Bitters, Sparkling Water

The $40 entrance fee allowed access to the two hour event atop the Leonardo, four of the six drinks and nibbles from Naked Fish, Pop Art Popcorn, Creminelli Fine Meats, Beehive Cheese, Eva Boulangerie and The Leonardo Cafe. The star of the show was most definitely the cocktails, and despite a relatively slow start to proceedings the event was packed to the rafters by the end. Surveying the crowd, in full party mode, I’ve no doubt many an onlooker to Salt Lake City, but would be stunned by the crowd mix, turnout and vibe. Can’t get a drink in SLC huh!?

My favorite drink of the evening was Copper Onion’s Pickles-n-Pimm’s jade green concoction, a rather radical departure taste wise from many other drinks. The crowd favorite went to Matt Pfohl of Pallet, whose showmanship drew long crowds to his table all night long.

Stay tuned for the next SLC Bites event this fall. Pictures in order: Leonardo artwork, host Vanessa Chang and DJ Jesse Walker, event just starting, offerings from Scott Gardner and Naked Fish, Copper Onion table and Clint Hollingsworth mixing up the drinks.

Kiler Wine introduces Whimsey

Kiler Grove Winegrowers, Salt Lake’s first urban winery, has introduced Whimsey, their new line of affordably priced, handcrafted wines. “Red Thriller”, the Whimsey Label’s first red, is a blend of varietals such as Zinfandel and Malbec, and is priced for everyday consumption. Master winemaker Mike Knight of Kiler Grove tells the story, “We made up our usual Kiler Grove blends and found we had just a bit of this, that, and the other left over in the barrels. Nothing left for us to do but put all the pieces together and work with it. So we did and that is how our Red Thriller came to be.” Red Thriller retails for $14 a bottle.

The first Whimsey white, a Riesling, is the result of a fortuitous meeting with a winegrower in Snake River Valley, Idaho, who found himself with more Riesling grapes than he could handle. Knight seized this opportunity and purchased the crop to produce Whimsey’s new “Noble Riesling” which gets its namesake from the “noble rot” Botrytis, a fungus that adds delicate flavors of honey and hazelnut to the underlying ripe pear flavors. Mike recommends it as an aperitif, a dessert wine, or paired with a favorite blue cheese. Noble Riesling retails for $16.75 a bottle.

The Whimsey line is here to stay, but these particular vintages are only available while they last. Both Red Thriller and Noble Riesling will be formally released in very limited quantities on National Wine Tourism Day, May 11, but locals can get a sneak peek tasting and stock up now. Both new Whimsey Wines are available for purchase only at Kiler Grove’s Tasting Room.

Log Haven’s dog days of sumer

Log Haven invites well-behaved canines and their human companions to escape the hot valley this summer and visit the restaurant for Dog Days of Summer, an al fresco dining event just for dogs and the humans who love them. In honor of Dog Days, a special limited-time drink menu will be offered, featuring favorites such as the Melon Collie Mojito, the Sober Dober and the Salty Chihuahua, made from a blend of grapefruit juice, anejo tequila and agave nectar.

Pictured above are Caffee Niche’s Fish Tacos ($11 – click for full size), one of several excellent set dishes on offer this mother day (9am through 2pm). Sundays also mean $5 Bloody Mary or Mimosa specials, too. “In addition to a completely re-tooled classic cocktail menu, Easter brunch offerings will pair perfectly with our new breakfast martini — cleverly concocted by our in-house mixologist Chris Bradshaw, ” said chef and owner Ethan Lappé. “It includes Tanqueray No. Ten, Cointreau, fresh lemon juice, orange marmalade, and a dash of orange bitters. When served ‘up’ with orange zest garnish…it’s delicious!”
