To cracking the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) opens the ways to opportunities in higher education. The GATE is the test that sees intense competition for seats in post-graduate courses in engineering and sciences in top institutes in the India is administered by the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc). Things to know to Crack GATE 2013

Pre-final year students are not be eligible for GATE 2012. “But this should not affect preparation of pre-final year students who plan to appear for GATE when eligible, as it is always better to start early and revise towards the end. Out of the 21 optionals in GATE, only one can be taken in a particular year. There is no restriction on which optional you can take in GATE. But, candidates wishing to attempt an optional not related to their qualifying degree, must check the admission rules of the institutes of interest carefully,”.

A close look at the changing pattern of the GATE exam over the years indicates that precision is the key ingredient for success in GATE 2013. The three-hour GATE paper will have a total of 65 questions. General Aptitude plays a significant role in maximizing the score, with as much as 15 per cent weightage. Engineering mathematics also enjoys a weightage of 15 per cent in GATE Exam.

Practice will help candidates sharpen their basic skills and make you perfect so as to derive the maximum benefit from these sections. Engineering subjects, where the fundamentals are tested, enjoy 70 per cent weightage. GATE Engineering subjects Question types would fall into three broad categories – memory, application of knowledge and conceptual understanding. Answers once marked cannot be changed. So, be careful. Only black ink ball pen are to be used for marking the answers. Pencils are not allowed to fill your GATE OMR answer sheet.

GATE exams conducted yearly once only, so candidates should plan their GATE 2013 preparation strategically, by solving previous years GATE question papers and analyzing the weightages for various topics GATE previous years question papers. “Concepts should be revised, practice papers and previous/mock GATE papers should be solved, Now a days many sites are providing GATE mock online test for free and some paid services also available in the internet. GATE 2013 Application

Previous year (GATE 2012) candidates need to register and fill the application Online only as the sale of application forms through banks and GATE office counters has been discontinued. The admit cards were to be downloaded from the respective IIT websites. So they may follow this for GATE 2013 also. In GATE 2012, a total of six papers (AR, GG, TF, AE, AG and MN) will be conducted completely online. This indicates that there is a good chance of GATE becoming completely online exam in coming years. Before applying GATE 2013, candidates must ensure that they have chosen the right paper, which qualifies them to become eligible to seek admission to the specific programmes they are interested in. Academics say students getting ranks below 100 can be assured of a seat in either the IISc or top IITs. Several other good colleges that take students for master's programme through GATE include the NITs located across the country and the university colleges.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of second class in the following degrees are eligible to apply:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in an appropriate field of Engineering/Technology/Architecture/ Medicine/ Agriculture/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Sciences; or Master's degree in Science in an appropriate field including Biotechnology, or Master's in Economics, Geography, Social Work, Psychology, Management, Mathematics, Statistics, Commerce, Operations Research, Computer Science/ Application as applicable to the respective departments.

Qualifying in one of the following appropriate Tests (with validity as on 1^st of August 2012) is mandatory : CSIR-UGC NET for JRF; or UGC-NET for JRF; or DBT JRF; or ICMR JRF; or JEST 2012; or NBHM 2012; or IISc Entrance Test 2012; or GATE 2011/2012. Qualifying in these tests is not mandatory but desirable for candidates who possess a Master's degree in Engineering/Technology/ M Sc(Engg) or MS or MBA (post BE/B Tech) and wish to apply for the departments in the Engineering Faculty, including those candidates awarded with INSPIRE Fellowship.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of second class in the following qualifying degree with valid GATE score are eligible to apply:

(c) Master of Design (M Des) in Product Design & Engineering

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of second class in Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology / Design / Architecture with valid GATE/CEED scores are eligible to apply.

Selection is based on a Design Aptitude Test and interview subsequent to short-listing based on valid GATE / CEED scores.

(d) Master of Management (M.Mgt)

IISc uses CAT scores for short-listing the candidates for M.Mgt programme. IIMs have no role either in the selection process or in the conduct of the programme.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of first class in Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent degree with a valid GATE/CAT scores are eligible to apply.

Selection is based on a group discussion and interview subsequent to short-listing based on valid GATE / CAT scores.

(iii) INTEGRATED Ph D PROGRAMMES

in (1) Biological Sciences, (2) Chemical Sciences, (3) Physical Sciences and (4) Mathematical Sciences.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of first class in Bachelor's degree in Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences, (including Pharmaceutical, Veterinary Sciences and Agricultural Sciences), Mathematical Sciences, or Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology as applicable to respective disciplines.

The short-listing of candidates for interview is based on the performance in the IISc Entrance Test 2012.

(iv) EXTERNAL REGISTRATION PROGRAMMES (Ph D only)

External Registration Programme (ERP) is the Research programme for working professionals from (1) R&D Organizations / Industries and (2) for Faculty members from Engineering, Agricultural, Pharmaceutical, Veterinary, Medical Colleges/ Universities, recognized by the appropriate government agencies. The candidates must be officially sponsored by their employing organization.

Ph D in Science: All the Science departments as indicated in (i) except Neuroscience, High Energy Physics and Solid State & Structural Chemistry.

Ph D in Engineering: All the Engineering departments as indicated in (i).

ELIGIBILITY

Qualifications remain the same as for the regular candidates. Further, the candidates should have two years of continuous service in a permanent position in the present organisation Age: NOT higher than 40 years as on 01.04.2012.

Desirable: Qualifying in one of the tests;IISc Entrance Test,CSIR-UGC NET for JRF,UGC-NET for JRF, DBT JRF,ICMR JRF, GATE,

IITM Financial Assistance for MTechProgrammes

Selected GATE Qualified Candidates and IIT B.Tech. Graduates admitted to M.Tech. programmes are eligible for Financial Assistance.

Financial assistance in the form of Half-Time Teaching Assistantship (HTTA) at the rate of 8,000/- per month (tenable for a maximum period of 24 months) will be awarded to Indian nationals doing the M.Tech. Programmes, subject to Institute rules. HTTA students are required to assist the department for 8 hours of work per week related to academic activities of the department such as laboratory demonstration, tutorials, evaluation of assignments, test papers, seminars, research projects, etc. The number of seats available under HTTA are indicated in the 'Programmes' link.

A few assistantships may also be offered by some government organizations such as Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, and Aeronautical Research and Development Board, etc.

A few seats are available without HTTA (N-HTTA, i.e., without any financial assistance) in some M.Tech. streams as indicated in the 'Programmes' link. Candidates can opt for either HTTA (code ending with Y), or N-HTTA (Code ending with N), or both, in a particular M.Tech. stream. The eligibility criteria for HTTA and N-HTTA categories are the same.

Provision exists for the candidates who have joined M.Tech. streams under N-HTTA category to convert to HTTA at the end of one semester depending on the vacancies in HTTA category and on the basis of their performance in the first semester examinations.

DAE-GF Scheme:

DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme (DAE-GF) in various engineering disciplines is offered by Department of Atomic Energy. GATE qualified candidates selected under this scheme will get a fellowship of 20,000/- per month. After successful completion of M.Tech. Programme, the DAE-GF fellows will be placed in one of the DAE units. For further information visit the website: www.hrdbarc.gov.in.

AERB-GF Scheme:

Under Atomic Energy Regulatory Board Graduate Fellowship (AERB-GF) Scheme, upto three candidates will be selected either from Mechanical Engineering (Design / Thermal Engineering) or Nuclear Engineering or Chemical Engineering discipline or from both and they will be offered a monthly stipend of 20,000/- per month for two years with a one time educational material allowance of 5,000/-. IITM Admission Procedure for GATE Qualified Candidates

Admission to candidates (who are not required to take suitability test) will be finalized strictly in the order of merit as per the GATE Score (CGPA for IIT Graduates) and on the basis of choices given by them in the application.

The short-listed candidates who are to be examined for suitability test shall report at IIT Madras, Chennai - 600 036 and appear before the committees tentatively on 21st & 22nd April, 2012. The exact date and time will be intimated to the eligible candidates.

For M.Tech. programmes in Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Mathematics, candidates are requested to report at the office of the Head of the respective Department.

Candidates with XE/XL paper in GATE have to report at the GATE office.

Persons with Physical Disability (PD): For PD candidates with any category of disability (viz., blindness or low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disability or cerebral palsy), benefit will be given to only those who have at least 40% permanent physical impairment in relation to a body part/system/extremity/ whole body, etc. Such candidates must submit, along with the Application Form, the certificate of disability from the authorized medical board attached to one of the following: Vocational Rehabilitation Centre (VRC) for Physically Handicapped persons /Special Employment Exchange for Physically Handicapped/ Government Hospital (District and State level).

First set of offers for HTTA and N-HTTA seats are likely to be sent in the first week of May 2012. The candidates have to send their acceptance together with prescribed fees within 10 days of offer to The Chairman, M.Tech. Admission Committee, GATE Office, IIT Madras. Second and subsequent offers may be made depending on the availability.

Updating

There is a possibility of updating the branch/stream for the candidates who have already accepted the offer of admission, depending upon the availability of vacancies subsequently. Please note that during the updating, depending on the indicated order of preference, it is possible for a candidate to switch from a HTTA seat to a N-HTTA seat if N-HTTA is higher in order of preference given by the candidate.

Spot Admission:

(Only for applicants who are called for spot admission)

Depending upon the final number of vacancies and availability of seats in different streams before the closure of admissions, some of the candidates, who have already applied but could not secure admission in the first, second and subsequent offers will be informed to appear before the Admission Committee at GATE Office of the Institute with relevant documents and fees. The list of candidates called for spot admission will also be displayed on the web. The number of vacant seats available will be indicated at that time. Admission will be offered for HTTA and N-HTTA vacant seats on the spot to suitable candidates as per the procedure indicated above. They should join immediately by paying the fees. This is an additional opportunity provided and hence candidates should be prepared to take the risk of not getting a seat. Candidates appearing for Spot Admission will have to travel at their own expense. If all the seats are filled during the first, second and subsequent offers, spot admission may not be operated.

Reporting for admission:

GATE qualified candidates who accept the offer of admission must produce completion certificate of their qualifying degree examination and join the Institute on 25th July, 2012 (Wednesday) forenoon. Sponsored candidates also should report for admission on 25th July, 2012 (Wednesday) afternoon. Selected candidates will have to pay various fees and deposit amounts as indicated in the offer letter. The candidate must produce a medical fitness certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner in the format which will be enclosed along with the letter of offer of admission.

In all matters relating to admission, the decision of the M.Tech. Admission Committee is final.

IIT Madras Suitability Test

Who are all required to come for suitability test? And when?

The short-listed candidates who are to be examined for suitability test shall report at IIT Madras, Chennai - 600 036 and appear before the committees tentatively on 21st and 22nd April, 2012. The exact date and time will be intimated to the eligible candidates.

Suitability test is required for M.Tech. programmes in the Department of:

Yes, a candidate can apply for a maximum of 8 programmes.

Do I need to post my application and attachments?

Yes, the GATE Qualified Candidates and IIT Graduates with B.Tech. When and how do I know whether I have been offered a programme?

First set of offers for HTTA and N-HTTA seats are likely to be sent (by email and speed post) in the first week of May 2012. Second and subsequent offers may be made depending on the availability.

What are the documents I have to send along with the offer acceptance?

The candidates have to send their acceptance, ORIGINAL GATE Scorecard together with the demand draft(s) for the prescribed fees within 10 days of offer to:

Can I withdraw after accepting the offer?
Yes. We shall retain 1000/- as processing fees, and the balance amount will be returned within a month.

After declining the offer can I be considered for further offers?
No.

Is there any chance for me to move up in my preference and what am I supposed to do for that?

There is a possibility of updating the branch/stream for the candidates who have already accepted the offer of admission, depending upon the availability of vacancies subsequently. Please note that during the updating, depending on the indicated order of preference, it is possible for a candidate to switch from a HTTA seat to a N-HTTA seat if N-HTTA is higher in order of preference given by the candidate.

Can I send the photocopy of my GATE scorecard?
No. You need to send the ORIGINAL GATE scorecard only. This is to ensure that a candidate does not accept offers of admission from more than one institute.

I am doing an M. Tech. programme and I have submitted my GATE scorecard to the college. Am I eligible to apply for an M. Tech. programme at IIT Madras using the same GATE scorecard?
If you are already receiving HTTA at another institute, then you are not eligible for an M. Tech. Programme at IIT Madras.

What is spot admission?
Depending upon the final number of vacancies and availability of seats in different streams before the closure of admissions, some of the candidates, who have already applied but could not secure admission in the first, second and subsequent offers will be informed to appear before the Admission Committee at GATE Office of the Institute with relevant documents and fees. The list of candidates called for spot admission will also be displayed on the web. The number of vacant seats available will be indicated at that time. Admission will be offered for HTTA and N-HTTA vacant seats on the spot to suitable candidates as per the procedure indicated above. They should join immediately by paying the fees. This is an additional opportunity provided and hence candidates should be prepared to take the risk of not getting a seat. Candidates appearing for Spot Admission will have to travel at their own expense. If all the seats are filled during the first, second and subsequent offers, spot admission may not be operated.

Can I change to another M. Tech. programme after a semester?
No.

Will I be eligible for conversion to Ph. D. programme?
M.Tech. students will be eligible for conversion to M.S./Ph.D. if they satisfy the following criteria:

The candidate should have successfully completed a minimum of 2 semesters in the M.Tech. programme.
The candidate should have a minimum CGPA of 8.0 in the prescribed courses.

A committee duly constituted by the Head of the Department will consider such applications for conversion to M.S./Ph.D. and make its recommendation.

What is HTTA? What is N-HTTA?

Financial assistance in the form of Half-Time Teaching Assistantship (HTTA) at the rate of Rs.8,000/- per month (tenable for a maximum period of 24 months) will be awarded to Indian nationals doing the M.Tech. programmes, subject to Institute rules. HTTA students are required to assist the department for 8 hours of work per week related to academic activities of the department such as laboratory demonstration, tutorials, evaluation of assignments, test papers, seminars, research projects, etc. The number of seats available under HTTA is indicated in Table 1.

A few seats are available without HTTA (N-HTTA, i.e., without any financial assistance) in some M.Tech. Streams as indicated in Table 1.

Provision exists for the candidates who have joined M.Tech. Streams under N- HTTA category to convert to HTTA at the end of one semester depending on the vacancies in HTTA category and on the basis of their performance in the first semester examinations.

Can I apply for both HTTA and N-HTTA seats?

Heavily dominated by public institutions, the top-50 listing is a roll call of excellence India’s top 50 engineering institutions 2011. Ranking the top colleges is a very difficult task. While it is relatively easy to create clusters of colleges, it is differentiating within clusters that became the most difficult exercise. So for the first time in the country we have used balanced scorecard methodology to arrive at the ranking of the top 50 colleges. Ranking methodology: We scanned the last five year rankings of about 241 colleges and normalised their ranks, by assigning differential weights to subjective and objective ranking. Such a process is used to develop clusters of institutions. The research standing of individual institutions were further used to refine the clusters and remove the odd men out. Individual clusters were ranked serially. In each of these clusters the differences in cut-off marks, wherever possible (like in case of IITs and AIEEE institutes and some States) were used to arrive at individual ranks. How to Calculate GATE 2012 Percentile?

Percentile is a relative term and tells where you stand in a set of people. For example, if you have 99.95 percentile in GATE 2012 means that your score or marks are above 99.95% student who took GATE 2012 exam.Whereas, percent is a relative and measured on the scale of 100, it means that how many marks you got out of 100. This is not a measure of GATE performance. Therefore, don’t worry if someone says you that they go 99.9X score and think that it is beyond your capacity. To answer how to find GATE 2012 percentile please read the below formula and example carefully.

The GATE 2012 percentile is calculated as follows:

P = ( (N- your rank)/ N) x 100

Where P is percentile and N is total number of candidates appeared for GATE 2012 exam in your stream.

(N- Your rank) indicates the number of candidates who have scored more marks than you.

For example, if total number of candidates are 100 and 90 of them have less marks than you P = (09/100)X100 = 0.9×100 = 90 percentile.

For another example: A guy form Mechanical Engineering have All India Rank (AIR) 99 and total number of student of candidates appeared for the GATE 2012 Electronics and Communication Engineering are 1,76,944 in GATE 2012. Then his GATE 2012 percentile would be calculated as

P = ((176944-99)/ 176944) X 100 = 99.944

The candidate has 99.94 percentile.

GATE 2012 results will be announced by the GATE 2012 organizing institutes on March 15, 2012 at 10:00 hrs and will be available on the GATE websites of IITs and IISc.GATE 2012 score is valid for TWO YEARS from the date of announcement of the GATE 2012 results.

GATE 2012 results may be made available on payment basis to interested organizations (educational institutions, R & D laboratories, industries, etc.) in India and abroad based on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between IIT Delhi and the requesting organization. Details in this regard can be obtained from the Chairman, GATE, IIT Delhi.

GATE 2012 Results Announced
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a prestigious all India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology. Admission to postgraduate programmes with government scholarships/assistantships in engineering colleges/ institutes/ Universities is open to those who qualify through this GATE test. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, the organizing institute for GATE 2012, has announced the GATE 2012 results on 15th March 2012. In GATE 2012, several new features were introduced. The GATE 2012 application process was online with an online fee payment option and downloadable admit cards. The sale of GATE offline applications and mailing the hardcopy admit cards have been discontinued. For the first time, the images of the Optical Response Sheet (ORS) were made available on the respective GATE websites along with the responses picked up by the scanner so that the candidates could cross-check and make a request for rechecking the ORS if there were any discrepancies. The three hour test in 21 papers was conducted in 860 centers and 170 cities/towns across the country on two days: the computer based online GATE exam in six papers on 29th January 2012 and the offline GATE exam in the remaining fifteen papers on 12th February 2012.

A total of 7,77,134 candidates registered for GATE 2012 and 6,86,614 candidates appeared for the exam. Nearly 81% of the total number of candidates who appeared for GATE 2012 were from four papers:

The IIT Delhi zone topped among the other zones with 18,927 candidates figuring in the list of qualified candidates, followed by IIT Madras (17,343), IIT Kharagpur (15,735), IISc Bangalore (14,379), IIT Kanpur (12,469), IIT Roorkee (12,328), IIT Bombay (12,287), and IIT Guwahati (5,058).
The candidates need to apply separately to each of the IITs and IISc to seek admission.

Admission to Postgraduate Programmes with MHRD scholarship/assistantship

As per the directives of the MHRD, the following procedure is to be adopted for admission to postgraduate programmes (Master and Doctoral) with MHRD scholarship/assistantship. The performance of the candidate in GATE will be considered for admission. If the candidate is to be selected through interview for postgraduate programmes, minimum 70% weightage is to be given to the performance in GATE. The remaining weightage (30% maximum) can be given to the candidate's academic record or performance in interview. Candidate opting for a general paper (XE or XL) may be further examined (by interview/written test) by the admitting institution. In such cases also the weightage for performance in GATE should not be less than 70%. The admitting institution will prescribe minimum passing percentage of marks in the interview. Some colleges/institutes specify GATE qualification as the mandatory requirement even for admission without MHRD scholarship/assistantship.

Candidates are advised to seek details of admission procedures and availability of MHRD scholarship/assistantship from the concerned admitting institution. The criteria for postgraduate admission with scholarship/assistantship are different for different admitting institutions. GATE offices will not entertain any enquiry about admission and award of scholarship/assistantship.

It is the responsibility of the admitting institution to award the MHRD scholarship/assistantship to only those candidates who secured marks equal to or more than the "qualifying mark" in the concerned GATE paper and for the corresponding category of the candidate . The management of the postgraduate scholarship/assistantship is also the responsibility of the admitting institution. The GATE committee also has no role in the award or disbursement of scholarship/assistantship. Similarly, reservation of seats under different categories is as per the policies and norms prevailing at the admitting institution and Government of India rules.

A candidate declared "GATE qualified at the time of admission" is entitled for MHRD fellowship for 24 months unless he/she loses it due to poor performance in the registered programme.

The students of Integrated Master Degree and Dual Degree programmes in Engineering/Technology are eligible to appear in GATE 2012 in order to qualify for the postgraduate scholarships in their own institutions only. They are not eligible for admission to a fresh M.E./M.Tech. programme.

Issue of Duplicate GATE Score Card

Duplicate GATE 2011 scorecard may be issued to candidates on request to the Chairman, GATE 2011, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai - 600036 if the candidate:

loses the scorecard and sends as a proof the copy of FIR lodged in the police station of the area where the student lost the scorecard
accidentally damages the scorecard beyond recognition and the candidate produces an affidavit made in a court of law declaring that he/she has accidentally (cause should be mentioned) damaged the original scorecard beyond recognition
accidentally damages the scorecard which is still recognizable, but cannot be used as a certificate any more, and sends the damaged scorecard to the Chairman, GATE 2011, IIT Madras, Chennai 600036.

The candidate will be issued a GATE 2011 scorecard with the word 'Duplicate' on it and authenticated by the signature of the Chairman, GATE 2011, IIT Madras if the candidate sends the following to the Chairman, GATE 2011, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai - 600036:

Duplicate GATE scorecard may be issued to candidates on request to the Chairman, GATE 2011, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai - 600036.

Steps to requesting a Duplicate GATE Score Card
If anyone loses the scorecard then lodge a complaint with police and sends as a proof the copy of FIR lodged in the police station of the area where the student lost the scorecard.Accidentally damages the scorecard beyond recognition and the candidate produces an affidavit made in a court of law declaring that he/she has accidentally (cause should be mentioned) damaged the original scorecard beyond recognition. accidentally damages the scorecard which is still recognizable, but cannot be used as a certificate any more, and sends the damaged scorecard to the Chairman, GATE 2011, IIT Madras, Chennai 600036.

The candidate will be issued a GATE 2011 scorecard with the word 'Duplicate' on it and authenticated by the signature of the Chairman, GATE 2011, IIT Madras if the candidate sends the following to the Chairman, GATE 2011, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai - 600036:

An application on plain paper addressed to the Chairman, GATE 2011, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai - 600036 requesting for duplicate GATE 2011 scorecard. The candidate's GATE 2011 registration number must be mentioned in the application.

A Demand Draft for Rs 250.00 drawn in favour of the Chairman, GATE 2011,IIT Madras payable at Chennai as fees for the duplicate scorecard
Self addressed A4 size envelope affixing postal stamp worth Rs 25.00 on it.
