Here are excerpts from his speech tonight.

Four years ago, I know that many Americans felt a fresh excitement about the possibilities of a new president. That president was not the choice of our party but Americans always come together after elections. We are a good and generous people who are united by so much more than divides us.

When that hard fought election was over, when the yard signs came down and the television commercials finally came off the air, Americans were eager to go back to work, to live our lives the way Americans always have – optimistic and positive and confident in the future.

That very optimism is uniquely American.

It is what brought us to America. We are a nation of immigrants. We are the children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the ones who wanted a better life, the driven ones, the ones who woke up at night hearing that voice telling them that life in that place called America could be better.

They came not just in pursuit of the riches of this world but for the richness of this life.

Every family in America wanted this to be a time when they could get ahead a little more, put aside a little more for college, do more for their elderly mom who’s living alone now or give a little more to their church or charity.

Every small business wanted these to be their best years ever, when they could hire more, do more for those who had stuck with them through the hard times, open a new store or sponsor that Little League team.

UPDATE: Mitt is giving a wonderful speech. His stories about his family and parents are absolutely heartwarming.

It also made a great photo-op.

But two months later he sent rapper Heavy D’s family a personal letter of condolence.

The White House did say the signatures were real and not from an autopen. That’s what they told ABC today.

The White House did not dispute that the letters were form letters, but that would appear to not be unique to this president. A 2003 Newsweek story reported that the sympathy letters grieving families had received from President George W. Bush were “form letters. With the exception of the salutation and a reference to the fallen soldier in the text, the letters the families shared with me are all the same.”

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was in 2004 criticized for using an auto-pen to sign condolence letters to the families of fallen troops. At the time he issued a statement saying, “I wrote and approved the now more than 1,000 letters sent to family members and next of kin of each of the servicemen and women killed in military action. While I have not individually signed each one, in the interest of ensuring expeditious contact with grieving family members, I have directed that in the future I sign each letter.”

For much of the past seven years, President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have waged a clandestine operation inside the White House. It has involved thousands of military personnel, private presidential letters and meetings that were kept off their public calendars or sometimes left the news media in the dark.

Their mission: to comfort the families of soldiers who died fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and to lift the spirits of those wounded in the service of their country.

On Monday, the president is set to make a more common public trip – with reporters in tow – to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, home to many of the wounded and a symbol of controversy earlier in his presidency over the quality of care the veterans were receiving.

But the size and scope of Mr. Bush’s and Mr. Cheney’s private endeavors to meet with wounded soliders and families of the fallen far exceed anything that has been witnessed publicly, according to interviews with more than a dozen officials familiar with the effort.

“People say, ‘Why would you do that?’” the president said in an Oval Office interview with The Washington Times on Friday. “And the answer is: This is my duty. The president is commander in chief, but the president is often comforter in chief, as well. It is my duty to be – to try to comfort as best as I humanly can a loved one who is in anguish.”

There has been much guessing going on this week as to who the “mystery speaker” might be at tonight’s RNC Convention finale.

The mystery has been almost certainly revealed.

According to Fox News Latino,

Hollywood heavy weight director Clint Eastwood is said to make his rounds as a guest speaker Thursday evening at the Republican National Convention.

Eastwood, whose wife Dina Ruiz Eastwood was adopted into a Puerto Rican family, endorsed GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, sparking buzz about being the mystery guest speaker right before Florida GOP Sen. Marco Rubio is set to take the stage.  Read the full story at: FoxNews.com

It figures… Iranian regime leader Ayatollah Khamenei heaped praise ont the Democrat-endorsed Occupy movement yesterday.
CNS News reported, via Free Republic:

The Ayatollah Ali Khamenei – the “supreme leader” of Iran – praised America’s “Occupy Wall Street” movement on Thursday, calling it a reflection of people around the world who are “losing their patience” with the dominance of the United States and Israel in the international community.

“Everybody has become tired of this faulty international structure,” Khamenei said in his inaugural address to the Non-Aligned Summit, a gathering of 120 nations now taking place in Tehran.

“The 99-percent movement of the American people against the centers of wealth and power in America and the widespread protests of the people in Western Europe against the economic policies of their governments show that the people are losing their patience with this situation,” Iran’s Fars news agency quoted him as saying.

The powerhouse speaker line-up continues at the 2012 RNC Convention.

U.S. Olympic champions will show their support for Romney at tonight’s finale.  Among the 11 Olympians appearing, hockey gold medalist Mike Eruzione, speed skater and world record holder Derek Parra, and five time consecutive skeet champion Kimberly Rhode will speak about Mitt Romney’s brilliant leadership during the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.  What better witness than the Olympic athletes to tell the story of how Mitt Romney stepped into that crumbling, corrupt, and indebted disaster, saved it, then turned the event into an organized, outstanding success.  Exactly the sort of leader our country needs right now.

Mike Eruzione … The captain of the U.S. Olympic “Miracle on Ice” hockey team from the 1980 Lake Placid Games is among 11 Olympians expected to appear on the last night of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., before Mitt Romney’s speech to accept the party’s nomination for president.

…Eruzione and Romney first met through the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, which were marred by a bribery scandal related to the bidding process and massive financial shortfalls — problems that came before Romney was hired to lead the organizing committee in 1999. …

“It’s the first time anybody’s ever asked me to be part of something so big,” said Eruzione, who scored the goal that put the U.S. ahead to stay in its fabled 4-3 upset of the Soviet Union in 1980. “I’m not going to get up there and talk about Medicare or job opportunities. I’m going to talk about my relationship with him and Salt Lake City and what I thought was an absolutely incredible job to pull those games together. It could have been a disaster.” …

Many of the Olympians invited to the convention have ties to the 2002 Olympics.

Five current or former members of the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation are to appear Thursday, which is no coincidence, Parsley said.

“I think 2002 was a breakout year for our federation,” Parsley said. “We owe a lot to Mitt Romney and the staff that he put together to pull those Olympic Games from the brink of disaster. The Olympic Games were in question and he really came in and put together a staff of people who did the job and turned it into a huge success. If he had not done what he did, we would not have done what we did.”

When Mitt Romney took over “he faced a $400 million budget deficit and turned that around to a $100 million surplus” and, as Derek Parra said, “allowed athletes like myself to realize our dreams”.

Members of the Community Relations Service (CRS), a branch of DOJ that acts as “peacemaker” for community conflicts and tensions arising from differences of race, color, and national origin(?) were seen organizing Occupoopers outside the RNC convention on Tuesday. One member is seen giving a protester a high-five despite the fact CRS reps are to “remain neutral” and act as “peacemakers.”

Al Sharpton read the note at the funeral.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.”

But when 17 members of the elite Navy SEALs were killed in the crash in Afghanistan back in August 2011, he sent their parents a form letter.

It was the deadliest single loss for U.S. forces in the decade-long war in Afghanistan. And, Obama sent these families a form letter.
