What To Expect 

Folks from Pheasants Forever and the Society for Range Management guide the walk. They can point at something you’d normally walk right past and suddenly make it interesting. You’ll learn how to spot different grasses and prairie plants, notice bird nests you would’ve missed, and start to understand how everything fits together. 

On our Prairie Walks, you’ll smell different plants, feel textures, and sometimes even taste something growing nearby (when it’s safe to do so). 

Super Easy, No Pressure 

This isn’t a hike you have to “prepare” for. We’ll have binoculars you can use, but you’re welcome to bring your own. 

It’s: 

• Easy and relaxed 
• Open to all ages 
• Usually about an hour
• Totally fine to come and go as you need

Frank Koch was the founding scientist of North Dakota’s Gateway to Science. He dreamed of something extraordinary: a welcoming “gateway to science” where curiosity could flourish, and people of all ages could discover the wonder of learning through hands-on, joyful exploration.

That bold vision, ignited in the early 1990s, came to life in 1994 with the opening of North Dakota’s very first hands-on science center.

A Legacy That Continues to Grow

Nearly three decades later, Frank’s dream has grown beyond what he could have imagined with the opening of North Dakota’s Gateway to Science—a state-of-the-art facility that has expanded our reach, deepened our mission, and transformed our impact.

Although Frank was not physically present to witness this milestone, his spirit lives on in every spark of curiosity we ignite.

On May 14, we honored Frank’s lasting legacy in informal STEM education by planting a tree in the Outdoor Explorium—a tribute to the roots he planted and the future he inspired.

A Living Tribute

Frank was a woodcarver, and his favorite medium was the American Linden tree. The City of Bismarck selected a Green Spire Linden, a smaller variety that better fits the space.

Why He Volunteers 

Since his early days at summer camp, Brody has seen how much joy and excitement hands-on STEM experiences can bring to people of all ages, and it has stuck with him.

As a volunteer, Brody enjoys helping visitors explore, learn, and have fun in the gallery. He hopes to continue volunteering and eventually grow into a role supporting summer camps, giving back in the same way he was once supported. 

“Brody is very creative and curious. When something isn’t working, he thinks of ways to improve and work it out. He is very interested in the Flight Simulator, always asks a lot of questions, and explores the different airplane options, applying what he learned.” — Paul

As a gallery volunteer, Brody helps keep exhibits running smoothly, supports daily operations, and contributes to a welcoming environment for visitors. His positive attitude, attention to detail, and willingness to jump in wherever needed make him a valuable part of the team.

Every session incorporates emerging areas in STEM education and practical strategies for making complex concepts accessible to learners of all ages.

Across North Dakota, it looks like classrooms where interest leads, students ask their own questions, and research becomes something they actively experience.

Thanks to support from the Society for Science, North Dakota’s Gateway to Science recently brought together middle and high school STEM educators from across the state for a focused professional development experience centered on student-led research.

Professional Development Designed for Real Classrooms

In a cohort, educators were introduced to Society for Science’s robust suite of resources, including Science News and Science News Explores, educator guides, “Graph of the Week,” and project planning tools, along with opportunities for grants and further professional learning. Then, they made direct connections to middle and high school standards and identified ways to integrate student-led research into their own classrooms.

Each participating teacher also received hands-on materials, including Arduino starter kits, environmental testing tools, and data-collection technology, ensuring they left not just with ideas, but with the tools to implement them.

Reaching Teachers Across the State

Educators from smaller towns like Wilton, New Salem, Ray, Stanley, and Devils Lake emphasized how valuable it was to connect with peers who face similar challenges. For many, this cohort model created a rare opportunity to collaborate, share resources, and build ongoing support networks.

Teachers from tribal schools in Lakota and Ft. Yates highlighted opportunities to expand this work further, including school-wide professional development and community-connected student research projects. Conversations included how to incorporate local context and culture into student work and create opportunities for public sharing and celebration.

In areas like Bismarck, Dickinson, and Jamestown, educators explored practical strategies for integrating research into existing structures, from classroom instruction to after-school programs. Access to ready-to-use, high-quality resources was a consistent highlight, particularly in districts where entire departments were able to participate together.

Educators from private schools also noted the importance of access to grant opportunities and classroom resources—areas where Society for Science’s resources can help bridge funding gaps.

Helping Teachers to Support Students

At its core, this work is about giving teachers what they need to expand what’s possible for their students. As Gateway to Science educator Annie Beck shared, “as a former classroom teacher, I know the constraints of time and money and the challenge of reaching all of the standards with the whole class while also supporting students in areas they need to grow in and encouraging their individual strengths and areas of interest.”

By combining high-quality professional development with tangible classroom resources, this initiative helps reduce barriers that often limit student-led, inquiry-based learning.

Looking Ahead

This is more than professional development for educators; it’s part of a broader effort made possible by Society for Science, to strengthen STEM education across North Dakota. By investing in teachers across the state, this work is expanding access to meaningful, real-world STEM experiences for students. And, as more educators bring student-led research into their classrooms, more students will have the opportunity to see how their interests and skills connect to the careers, industries, and challenges shaping our state.

Explore Robotics Across the Gallery 

All week, visitors can take part in a robotics-themed scavenger hunt throughout the exhibit gallery. You’ll uncover how robotics shows up in unexpected places.

Along the way, you might: 

• Experiment with cause and effect
• Test how machines move and respond
• Explore how sensors help machines
• Take on problem-solving challenges

It’s a hands-on way to see that robotics isn’t just about robots—it’s about how we design, think, and solve problems.  

Our Youngest Visitors Can Discover Robotics 

Our youngest scientists are joining the fun, too. During Preschool Discovery Hour, April’s theme is all about robotics. 

Join us for Coding Through Curiosity, presented in partnership with Marathon Petroleum, which introduces preschoolers to sorting, sequences, and patterns. Visitors even get a chance to code a robot and begin learning computational thinking in a playful, age-appropriate way. 

This program is free and designed specifically for early learners and their caregivers.

Visitors can also stop by on Saturday, April 11, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm for a FIRST Tech Challenge robotics scrimmage. Local high school teams will be testing and refining their custom-built robots in a relaxed, practice-style setting. 

It’s a great opportunity to:

• Chat with teams about their designs 
• Get a glimpse into the creativity and teamwork behind robotics competitions  

Whether you stay for a few minutes or a full match, there’s a lot of action! Drop in, observe, and ask questions.

National Robotics Week is celebrated across the country to highlight the growing role of robotics in education, industry, and everyday life. At North Dakota’s Gateway to Science, it’s also about something bigger: empowering people of all ages to see themselves as problem-solvers, creators, and innovators.

December: Germ Detectives 

In December, our gallery transformed into a germ investigation lab! With support from Essentia Health, children explored how illnesses spread and how our bodies stay healthy. 

Instead of simply being told to wash their hands, children discovered why it matters. Through play, observation, and a little bit of “yuck factor,” handwashing became more than a rule—it became a meaningful discovery. 

Preschoolers explored: 

• Creating “germs” in petri dishes with playdough  
• Pepper Panic!—using soap to make germs scatter  
• Designing silly (and slightly gross!) germ monsters  
• Using “germ powder” and UV light to see how germs spread  
• …and more hands-on investigations into staying healthy!  

January: Snowflake Scientists

In January, we embraced the magic of winter. Children investigated how the weather shapes the world around us. They observed patterns in snow and ice, experimented with movement and air, and discovered how animals adapt to cold environments.

Kids explored: 

• Snowflake salt painting  
• Snowflake tinker trays  
• Snow-themed letter tracing  
• Animal camouflage in winter habitats  
• …and other chilly discoveries!  

February: Baking Up Science 

In February, learning turned into an imaginative bakery where science, math, and kindness came together. Children explored counting, sorting, patterns, and design through hands-on activities and role-play.

The experience also focused on empathy and connection. Families created Valentine’s cards for older community members, which Extra Balloons delivered with festive balloon bouquets, helping children see how small acts can make a big difference. 

Activities included: 

• Building cupcake balance towers  
• Coding “love bugs” using Bee-Bot robots  
• Creating Valentine’s cards for assisted living residents  
• Exploring scents in a bakery-inspired sensory activity  
• …and more sweet discoveries!  

Looking Ahead to Spring

In March, we’ll kick things off with Bugging Out!, where young scientists will shrink down to explore the tiny world of insects. From examining real specimens under microscopes to discovering where bugs live and how they help our world, it’s sure to be an adventure full of curiosity and wonder.

The post From Germs to Snowflakes to Sweet Treats: A Winter of Discovery for Little Learners first appeared on North Dakota's Gateway to Science.

The event will take place in the Innovation Space on the second floor and will feature a community conversation with contributors from The Nature Record. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the assessment, ask questions, and share their perspectives through open public comment and guided discussion. 

Earlier in the day, visitors can enjoy hands-on, nature-themed activities for all ages during regular gallery hours from 1:00-5:00 PM. Community partners will be on-site with interactive booths, offering opportunities to explore connections between nature, science, and everyday life. 

The Nature Record Assessment brings together scientific research and lived experience to provide a clearer understanding of what is happening to nature in the United States, why it matters, and what choices lie ahead. The draft assessment is currently open for public comment through May 31, 2026, and input from community members plays a critical role in shaping the final report. 

“We see every day how connected people are to the land, water, and wildlife in North Dakota,” said Annie Beck, STEM Educator at North Dakota’s Gateway to Science. “This event gives our community an opportunity to share those perspectives and make sure they’re reflected in a national conversation about nature.” 

Members of the public are encouraged to review the draft assessment and submit comments to help improve its clarity, accuracy, and usefulness. Participation is open to everyone—no scientific or technical background is required.

Robots, Rivals, and Record Growth 

The season, led by DakotaFTC, kicked off with excitement, as teams from across the state designed, programmed, and refined their robots over several months. The season culminated in the State Championship on January 31, where students not only showcased robotic performance but also engineering design, teamwork, and community outreach. 

Six teams advanced beyond the regional championship level, exceeding expectations for a program of this size and geography. Two advanced to the FIRST Championship, four received invitations to Premier Events, and one team—Central Cass High School’s “Robotic Rodents”—won the state tournament and went on to compete in Washington, D.C. in February. Their victory and national travel highlight the skill, dedication, and teamwork fostered throughout the season. 

Small Towns, Big Dreams 

This season also brought excitement and new adventures for two teams from Alexander and Center, ND, who will travel to a Premier Event in Einhoven, The Netherlands. For many, this opportunity comes with first-time international travel. During the event that’s held June 16-20, 2026, they will collaborate with teams from around the world, explore new cultures, and see how engineering and technology connect people globally. 

Building a Stronger Robotics Community 

The season wasn’t just about competition—it was about community. Connections were fostered among schools, mentors, and volunteers across the state, boosting peer-to-peer learning, mentorship, and team support. Students and coaches shared tips, celebrated successes, and helped each other grow, creating a stronger, more sustainable robotics ecosystem. 

An April 11th end-of-season scrimmage during National Robotics Week will keep the excitement going, giving teams another chance to test their skills, try new ideas, and celebrate their accomplishments. 

Powered by Partnerships

This season’s impact was made possible through strong partnerships and community support. Dakota FIRST Tech Challenge (DakotaFTC) oversees and facilitates programming for the season, providing expert guidance and curriculum for teams. The program is heavily supported by volunteers, including mentors, coaches, and event staff whose time and energy make every competition and learning opportunity possible. 

Support from the Argosy Foundation helped rural teams participate fully, attend competitions, and gain experiences that extended well beyond the robotics season. Funding from North Dakota EPSCoR strengthened the infrastructure behind the season, including competition field sets and key events, ensuring students had access to high-quality learning experiences. Together, these partnerships turned ideas into action—and small-town dreams into global opportunities.  

What’s Next? 

With teams advancing to national and international competitions, and the robotics community growing across the state, we are excited to keep the momentum going. This season proves that North Dakota students can accomplish amazing things and have a blast doing it!

Do you know a student who stands out for their hard work, dedication to education, and love of learning? Nominations are now open for the 2026 STEM All-Stars! Each year, six students from North Dakota schools are selected as STEM All-Stars in recognition of their hard work, commitment to education and their community, and passion for learning. These students are nominated by educators who see their potential and dedication firsthand. In honor of their accomplishment, the Larks will recognize each 2026 STEM All-Star during the STEM Night game on June 1st. 

One special twist this year is one of the six all-stars will be chosen as our STEM Superstar based on their stellar performance and dedication to their education and community. The STEM Superstar will receive all of the benefits listed below PLUS a $1,000 scholarship from the MDU Resources Group Foundation.  

The STEM All-Stars (excluding the STEM Superstar) will also automatically be nominated for MDU Kid of the Month for the following year. 

In addition, one nominating teacher will be selected to receive a $1,000 award sponsored by MDU Resources Group Inc. to support a STEM project or to update their classroom or lab at their school. 

Student Awards

Each STEM All-Star Student will receive:

• Four tickets to STEM Night
• A feature in the Larks’ game day program
• On-field recognition at the game
• A Larks jersey
• A one-day family pass to North Dakota’s Gateway to Science
• Chance to showcase their STEM talents during the game through an on-field spot (under 2 minutes) 

One student will be chosen as our STEM Superstar and will be awarded $1,000 in their College Save account. 

Teacher Awards

• $1,000 donation from MDU Resources to enhance STEM programming at their school
• Four tickets to STEM Night game
• A feature in the Larks’ game day program
• On-field recognition at the game

The recognition takes place in conjunction with the MDU Resources STEM Expo, scheduled for June 1st at the ballpark. This event features interactive, hands-on STEM activities presented by local businesses and organizations. 

We invite educators across the state to submit nominations and help us recognize exceptional students who represent the future of STEM in North Dakota.
