Team Szarkowski won 1st place in the 2012 WIDGET contest

In an amazing show of engineering skill, three teams from Horizon Middle School won all three awards in the annual WIDGET contest held on Tuesday, February 7. First place was awarded to the “Szarkowski” team (pictured left with NDSPE Representative Jen Einrem), second to “Mominshade” and third to “Terminatori.” The annual WIDGET contest was hosted by Gateway to Science and the ND Society of Professional Engineers, Chapter 3 (NDSPE), at the Bismarck Public School Career Academy. Pictures of the other winning teams and more pictures from the event can be found on our website. There was fierce competition between six teams of students in grades 9-12. They had one hour to recreate machines that they had designed to achieve this year’s goal: knock over a pyramid of 3 cups.

And what were younger children doing while the high school students were building their WIDGET entries? Why, exploring engineering, of course! Several hands-on stations were staffed by NDSPE members and high school students to give children a chance to try their hand at engineering-related activities. Thanks to all the engineers, students, parents and children who participated in this event!

Nine teams of local middle and high school students will follow their own original designs to build machines that will achieve this year’s challenge – to knock over a pyramid of cups. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. The public is invited to watch the competition and cheer for their favorite team!
