Digital Dhurrie: An Illuminated Indian Rug

Digital Dhurrie alludes in pattern and shape to an Indian rug. The technique is reminiscent of inlay work found in Indian architectural decoration. And the lights blink and pulse as in an Indian festival or mela. The lights resemble the lighting at Indian celebrations and weddings: colorful, pulsing and vibrant.

The Indian rug is a symbol of inclusivity, welcoming, and community. The rug in the living room is where the family gathers to greet visitors, relax and converse. This piece creates a vibrant shared space, a ‘common ground.’

“whatever happens to you, happens to me” Co-opting the language of authority and bureaucracy, this piece embodies a message of solidarity and community. The lettering is all original, a subtly subversive act: typography as an art form, graphic design as protest.

The current political climate in the United States is divisive and our foreign policy is changing to follow a “go it alone” philosophy. Against this backdrop, these words resonate and reinforce the idea that we are all in this together. Other Americans losing healthcare effects me directly as well. We are used to seeing commands on signs, telling us to ‘stop’ or to ‘yield.’ This piece uses beautiful lettering to convey a more empowered and humane message.

This year is the 30th anniversary of the release of the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off so it was a real pleasure to create a new design for the film poster for this year’s Bigger Picture Show. There have been countless fan-made posters and I was hoping to portray something unique, so I went with an image or a view that we actually don’t see in the film– the process of the Ferrari busting through the plate glass window. I added Cameron’s quote as the turning point where he starts to stand up and become his own person. As a Mid-Century architecture fan, it was fun to draw the gorgeous house from the movie. There was something of a bidding war for the poster

Expanded Carpet centers on taking a commonplace object–a rug –and transforming it into a gathering space. It takes the traditional Indian rug and splits it into fragments, each of which becomes a bench/seating platform. There are strong traditions in India (as well as throughout the Middle East) of sitting on the floor on a carpet. It creates a community bond and a communal welcoming atmosphere. My piece plays on this and makes it easier and more comfortable to form this sort of community. The height of the legs for each bench varies, creating a dynamic sense of space. People can sit on the pieces, perhaps even move them around into welcoming communal groups.

The piece was exhibited outdoors during the Art Shack exhibit created by the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art and Englewood Community Development with support from Great Places 2020 Indianapolis LISC.

Cloud Towers

A place to play, a place to draw, a place to dream. My installation–Cloud Towers– seeks to create a space for gathering and creativity in the gallery.

The installation consists of a tiered table and towers shaped like clouds. They serve as a hub for creative activities. The stamps can be used to draw with, to create the weather emanating from the clouds. Participants create stamp drawings and display them right on the tables and shelves. The shelves also include many examples of my marble toys, to be played with. The point of the piece is that it requires participation on the part of the viewer to activate it. I’ve created an artwork, but equally importantly, I’ve created a place to gather and a platform for the creativity of others.

Morandi Rocks

Giorgio Morandi holds a special place in the heart of every painter. His small, modest-looking paintings of everyday cups and bottles open up worlds of the imagination. He made painting after painting of the same cups, pitchers, boxes and bottles for decades. But each painting is a world unto itself, a miracle of the imagination. One sees cities, towns, families huddled together, parades. You see pretty much anything your imagination is up for. Morandi’s use of shape and color are masterful.

I have long wanted to create a project that pays homage to Morandi. This project is a consists of a set of sculptures- based on the shapes in Morandi’s paintings. They are inspired by rocking-horse toys. Viewers can play with them, rock them and in this way, physically interact with Morandi’s paintings and see them brought to life. You can rearrange the objects to reconfigure the composition of the painting.

One of the interesting elements of this project is that it relies on the objects having rounded bottom edges. These are found in many of Morandi’s generally cylindrical subjects. Getting these bottom edges rounded fully is one of the challenges that students in beginning drawing classes often face. The tendency is to make the edges fairly flat. The project highlights this quirk in a humorous and accessible way.

Star Wars themed Toy Show at Primary Colours Gallery

Visiting Critic and Speaker at Bowling Green State University

I was invited to be a visiting critic and speaker at Bowling Green State University on October 16, 2015 and had a great time! I did individual half-hour critiques with 11 grad students and then gave and artist talk about my work. Their grad students work across media— in painting, digital, photography, installation, jewelery, glass, ceramics, design and sculpture. All of the students had different approaches and ideas and it was fun to see the wide variety of artistic practices.

200 milk crates, 7 rubber stamps, four packs of post-its and a whole lot of creativity from visitors to the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. These are the ingredients for Stamp Act, my installation as part of the exhibit- Finders Keepers. My goal is to engage the audience in playful creativity and exploration. Each of the stamps has a simple, elemental shape. These shapes can be combined in infinite ways to create unique, individual works of art. The exhibit creates itself. The crates serve as surfaces to create the art and a venue to display them. It was so much fun to see this come together at the opening, to see the project come to life with a creative explosion in the gallery.

For this year’s Water Show exhibit at Gallery 924, I created two pieces. ‘Climate Melt’ is a set of 3D printed candle molds that I used to create typographic candles that spell out the word Climate. The piece was lit in the gallery at the opening and melted in rather dramatic fashion. So cool to see lit candles in a gallery! The other piece “Word Problem” consists of three typographic marble toys.

Crate Space: Milk Crate Installation

Crate Space- a playground installation

Overview

This installation is based on three elements: the value of play, transforming the commonplace, and a celebration of typography as art. The project consists of 200 color-coded milk crates held together with cable ties and anchored with steel tent pegs. The crates are used to build 6 sculptures that together form an interactive gathering space. Some crates are also kept loose for free play and building.

The milk crates are configured into:

a large three panel sign which spells the word JOY. These panels form an amphitheater and help define the space of the piece
a large activity table
a tall cocktail-style table
a large yellow couch
a bookcase/library
a small herb garden
several chairs and stools

The project is sturdy, can be reconfigured depending on the space it is installed in and is highly interactive. The goal is to create a welcoming space where people feel free to play, interact, relax, read, or simply hang out.

Celebrating Play

This piece is a temporary built space, a pop-up playground. It creates a place that invites and celebrates play. Ray Oldenburg, in his book The Great Good Place writes about the importance of “third spaces”- places to gather besides work and home. He writes that these spaces are vital to community building. This piece serves as a sketch for how these can function. The work is playful both in the way that it is constructed and in the interactions it enables. It fosters an open, collective spirit, to be enjoyed by everyone, adults and children alike.

Transformation of the Commonplace

One of the highlights of this piece is its celebration of the humble building material- the milk crate. Why milk crates? I volunteered in the kitchen at Second Helpings in Indianapolis, an organization which provides meals for people in need. They use milk crates for storing and organizing. I wanted to use a material which could be repurposed after the installation and donated to Second Helpings.

I have found milk crates to be endlessly configurable. I’ve even created a very handy standing desk with them. This installation shows a few possible configurations, and it will be interesting to see what people come up with on their own.

Celebration of Typography

My work centers on two modes: grid-based color gradient paintings and interactive typography sculptures. This piece grows out of both ways of working. The modular nature of the crates and their specifically chosen colors mimics the paintings, while the JOY amphitheater forms a large-scale typographic sculpture. My goal is to celebrate lettering as an artform- we see this artistry all around us and I would love for people to take notice of it in their daily lives.

Conclusion

I believe that is a fun, interactive and colorful installation. The multihued blocks stand out in the outdoors and the piece is welcoming and accessible. The choice of the word JOY is deliberate: the piece is intended to have a sense of exuberance and generosity. Anyone can take part in it. The colors are attractive and create a playful and creative atmosphere.

Kern India, Kern!

The Indian cricket team are the current world champs of One Day cricket. They have a fantastic team with a lot of class and style. That’s why it is all the more striking that their uniforms are so desperately in need of a designers eye.

Above are some screenshots from recent matches- against Sri Lanka and England in 2014. The player’s names on the back of their jerseys show irregular kerning- the spacing between the letters. Raina reads as R-aina, vice-captain Virat reads as Vira-t and poor Umesh Yadav’s name has been stretched way out across the jersey. The letters should look more even to the eye, without the gaps. Like the rest of the team, the letters should be well-knit and closely spaced. Kern India, kern!

A Cricket Alphabet- An Alphabet Poster

This print is devoted to celebrating the game of cricket. It’s a sport known for its lengthiness, eccentricity and high-mindedness and is wildly popular in India. Cricket has lots of wonderful terminology- silly point, doosra, googly- this piece seeks to pay homage to this abundance. Cricket is often called ’the gentleman’s game’ and players of the sport are expected to conduct themselves with a high degree of sportsmanship and integrity. These are refreshing ideals for a sport today.

Thelma and Louise as a Bollywood Movie by Gautam Rao

Synthesis is an overriding concern in the art of Gautam Rao, an associate professor of art at Butler University. In the poster “Thelma and Louise as a Bollywood Movie,” you can see not just a synthesis of fine art and graphic design but also the fusion of American and Indian cultures. Hence the title, lettered in this digital illustration in Hindi—originally created for the Indianapolis International Film Festival Bigger Picture Show. Examples abound as well of Rao’s painting, such as the acrylic on canvas “skyline graph” which you might see as a mash-up of various bar charts and/or a highly pixelated (and colorful) vision of a city skyline. Rao is an artist obsessed with lists; in “Indians, Alphabetically,” he gives you 26 digital illustrations of men, one for each of twenty six Indian names, one for each letter in the English alphabet. Then there’s “The Numbers Series:” blocks of laser-cut acrylic, hanging on a shelf. These small blocks are cut in the form of letters (in various typefaces) spelling out numbers. In these negative spaces (so to speak) carved out by laser, there are passageways containing small metal balls, enclosed by clear plastic. This is 3D art that you can play with. It’s hard not to sense a very positive—and playful—aesthetic, when contemplating this work.

A Stopped Clock

The saying goes: “Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.”This is my attempt to build a stopped clock that is right twice a day. Here’s how this prototype works: You set the time you want the clock to be accurate for on the analog face in front. Then you set the digital clock in the back for the same time. At the time you set- say 3 o’clock (am or pm) the dial lights up for exactly one minute. It’s a stopped clock that is right twice a day. With fabrication help by Doug Keenan.

Color Coded: Gautam Rao
painting and design

Color Coded is an exploration of contrasts: between image and text, analog and digital methods and between analytical and aesthetic thinking. Through grid paintings, illustration and typographic experiments, this exhibit encompasses a year of play at the intersection of art and design.

This body of work contrasts highly systematic thinking with a love of the quirky and whimsical. The systematic thinking is embodied in type design and meticulously illustrated alphabet posters. It is also embodied in the technological rigor of working with Bézier curves and within strictly defined color palettes. This analytical approach contrasts with the whimsy of unexpected juxtapositions of color, interactive toys and playful drawings.

The exhibit examines the place where right and left brain thinking meet. It seeks to explore the intersection between art and design.

70th Annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition at the Swope Art Museum

I’m thrilled to have two artworks featured in the 70th Annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition at the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute, IN. This year’s juror is Carter E. Foster, the Steven and Ann Ames Curator of Drawings at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The two works featured are the Numbers series and Indianapolis Track. The Numbers series was also selected by the juror for the Sherry Dailey & Tom Tucker Award of Recognition. The exhibit runs at the Swope Art Museum from June 28 – August 23, 2014.

Tree|Cloud|Spring for landscape show at Gallery 924

Had a blast at the Gallery 924 Contemporary Landscape Exhibit. I created a work entitled Tree| Sky| Spring, celebrating the end of a long winter and the beginning of spring. The piece consists of three 6”x8” laser-cut handheld marble games. The three pieces form a visual poem about landscape and the way landscapes change over time. Viewers are encouraged to pick them up and roll the steel marbles around the piece. For the Sky piece the marbles allude to rain or thunder. For the Tree piece they might allude to snow. Taken together these artworks form a modern, dynamic tone-poem statement about landscapes and they ways they are portrayed in visual art. Sold one at the show too! The show runs at Gallery 924 from June 6-July 3 2014.

An Indian Food Alphabet

The font was custom drawn by me for this project using Glyphs software. It’s meant to function as a display font with a dash of Indian flavor.

The Lebowski Alphabet

Lookin’ out my back door

Two years ago I learned that LebowskiFest originated in Louisville, KY and happens every summer. I made the pilgrimage that summer- a short 3-hour ride from Indianapolis. A movie viewing, some white russian ice cream and my troubles were over.

Cincinnati Bike Month Poster: Decide to Ride

Super-excited to have a print included in Crank Up Cincy, a bike poster show in Cincinnati celebrating Bike Month 2014.

For the show I created ‘Decide to Ride’, a playful take on why we choose to bike. The poster focuses on the twin wheels, the essence of a bicycle. It presents several whimsical visual rhymes- a pair of sunny-side up eggs, twin cups of coffee, two ticking clocks and more. These illustrations depict reasons to ride, whether it be to breakfast or to get to work on time, for business or for fun. They are done in a crisp, modern style with a mid-century inspired color scheme. The words ‘Decide to Ride’ feature original lettering. Whatever your reason is, you should decide to ride!

Arden Little Library Branding

Typeforce 5-Numbers Series

It was an honor to have my work featured in Typeforce 5 on February 28th, 2013 in Chicago. For the show I created a series of 28 uniquely lettered, laser-cut numbers. Watch the video to see them all!

Artist Statement:

The Numbers Series is an exploration of lettering, numerology and physics. The letterforms alter the rolling patterns- each serif and curve guides or deflects the balls. These pieces form a dynamic calendar of February (the weirdest month). The number of each piece corresponds to the number of balls, forming a counting machine- a lettered abacus. They form a primitive app (no phone needed). Supported gestures include tilting and rocking.

The series underscores my love of play and whimsy. As a child I played Bouncing Babies on the Nintendo Game & Watch. These pieces use the same form factor, but with a longer battery life. You can play with these words. Pick them up. Shake them. Or use them as coasters for mathematical drinking games (the best kind).

Toast & Jelly Lettering

Experience vs. Memory in Painting

The video embedded below is a talk by Daniel Kahneman entitled- “The riddle of experience vs. memory”. Kahneman discusses how the mind can be thought of as two different parts, an experiencing self and a remembering self. The experiencing self is aware of experiences, of what’s happening in the ‘now’. The remembering sense recollects what happened, and places it in a narrative. The remembering sense is primarily responsible for what we remember about our experiences.

An analogy can be made between this way of thinking and painting. The experiencing self is in charge while painting, while the work is being made. We have experiences, but we’re not quite sure what they are and it’s hard to articulate them. Painters often use the word ‘intuitive’ to describe this phase, while they’re working. It’s used to mean- “I have no idea what I’m doing” or “I know what I’m doing but don’t care to explain it.” The artist can’t place their work in a narrative.

It’s only after the work is completed (and often after some time has gone by) that the remembering self takes over. The remembering self can articulate what the artist was trying to accomplish and what the artist was thinking about. The remembering self can put the artistic process into a cohesive narrative allowing the artist to talk about and understand their own work.

However, there is a gap between these two selves and the experiences they describe. The story as described by the remembering self makes sense, seems cohesive, but doesn’t completely capture the true nature of the experiences.

Some artists have a very difficult time articulating what they’re doing or what the intent of their work is. Perhaps they are responding only with their experiencing selves. Their experiences are truthful and vivid, but can’t be articulated by their remembering selves.

Kahneman’s idea is useful in separating the information (or often verbal gobbledegook) of an artist’s statement with what could be seen as the inherent truth of the artwork itself.

This painting is fighting me. The gunky canvas surface is making it harder to get the textures and details I’m looking for. It’s a nice location though. I had three people stop by to chat- two friends and one shutterbug with an awesome Leica camera. The painting will need at least another session or two if it hopes to reach Finished Paintingdom. We’ll have to see how it goes…

The first outside painting day of the year found me not far from the previous painting spot. The lumber store I like to go to has been closed for New Year’s so I had to paint on an existing canvas, in this case the one that was left over from Restless Portrait, layers of acrylic paint and all. The previous painting had Bob’s Gas station and the bank vaguely in the background, and these show up a little more prominently in this one. I was attracted to this spot by the sheer nondescript blandness of the back of the Safeway grocery store. There’s a large, fairly vacant stretch of asphalt and the windowless back edifice is distinctly plain. The roof has a gently curved structure that gives the view some evocative power- in this case the curved roof evokes for me a domed temple.

These bland urban inter-spaces have long had a prominent place in American landscape painting, with Edward Hopper probably the recognized master of the form. Hopper’s work seems to comment on a particular American disconnectedness, a sense of alienation.

While I revere Hopper, this is not quite what I want the work to be about. I think we live in a different age, a more connected time. These lonely, marginalized spaces exist, but perhaps how we see potential and the possibility for change in them.

Another contemporary American painter who deals with what he calls these “Non-Places” is Trevor Young, someone I was in high school with. Trevor takes this nondescriptness to a grand scale and adds some really beautiful paint handling to the mix.

Today I was aware that in standing in the Safeway parking lot I was technically ‘trespassing’, standing on privately-owned space that is not truly public, shared, communal space. The act of setting up my easel and my painting paraphernalia is a way of claiming this space, domesticating it, somehow making it more human scale and accessible. This was brought home to me when a gentleman pulled over in his truck and stepped up to chat with me about my painting. He was an artist himself, someone who likes to draw. I felt that, if only for a short while, I had made this otherwise fairly unwelcoming space one where conversations and artistic chit-chat were possible.

The painting at the end of the day has a reasonable amount of progress and a good start to subsequent sessions. I was only able to work on this for an hour and forty minutes. It was roughly 24° and very, very cold even though it was sunny. Let’s see what subsequent painting sessions hold for this work.

Westfield and Illinois in Winter

Today was the second (and final!) day working on this painting. We’ve had some rain and warmer weather so the snow was melting and things were slushy. We also has a 3.8 magnitude earthquake this morning, with the epicenter about an hour north.

It immediately became clear that I’d have to change the painting to incorporate the now visible grass and the slushier snow.

Not long after I’d started painting I turned around to see a reporter and a videographer standing nearby. They asked me if I’d felt this earthquake this morning. I said “No, but things seem to have shifted slightly between day before and today.” The clip showed up on the evening news today and is embedded and linked to below. Pretty hilarious. I guess I can now put an ‘as seen on TV’ sticker on the painting. (as a side note, the reporter seriously deserves an award for pronouncing my name perfectly).

After the hubbub, it was time to buckle down and work. I modified, painted over or added to every area of the painting.

I painted the grassy spots revealed by the snow melt and tried to make the trees more organically shaped and varied. The local bank branch is visible at the left edge of the painting as is Bob’s Gas Station in the background. The sign that’s at that slightly crooked angle reads ‘Illinois St’ and “Stop Ahead”. I also added the oncoming SUV and the cars stopped at the light because the picture really needed some sense of human activity and human scale. The headlights and brake lights are all on because I’ve always felt that seeing headlights on during the day has a surreal touch to it. As to the ambiguity about which lane the oncoming SUV is in? I’m going to chalk that up to artistic license and how swervy some drivers are.

The painting’s finished and I’m pretty happy with it for a quick two days of work. The important thing is- there are some pretty unique stories that came out of the process.

So this is today’s story. Very recently I’ve begun to see paintings again. What I mean is, I’ll be out for a walk or an errand and I’ll see a grimy CVS parking lot and the scene will cry out to me to be painted. I’ve been seeing potential paintings everywhere; particularly around Westfield Blvd. This particular scene contrasts the shimmery nature of the canal water with the intricate complexity of the retail shops to the left. It’s a classic nature/culture pairing and I was eager to get out and paint. To me these views are not particularly noteworthy or picturesque, but they speak to me on a deep level. To take the ordinary mundaneness of the routine and see something special in it.

The trees are dripping a bit at the bottom with the addition of some linseed oil to the paint. The session had some of the challenges associated with painting on the spot-a few of the paint tubes were crusty and I couldn’t get them open. But I’m relishing the challenge of doing this work and found ways to work around the unopenable tubes.

There’s still quite a bit of work to do on this. I don’t know that I’ll be able to get out in the next two days, but hopefully I’ll be able to soon. Let’s hope the snow stays in place!

Painting in progress in a noisy studio

These are in-process shots of a new painting in the works. It’s a simple painting, meant to be a warm-up for other work that’s coming up. Possible titles at this point are “Mugged” (cute) or “Interlocking Rings”.

I associate these mugs with a warmth that seemed appropriate for wintertime. I’ve painted one of these guys before in Still Life with Webster’s.

I was attracted to the set-up by the way the handles of the mugs overlapped- hence “Interlocking Rings”. I was thinking of this delightful Vi Hart video, part of her series on the connections between drawing, doodling and math.

The noisy studio in the post title refers to the dialogue that happens as the painting is created. What could be a quiet, meditative process turns out to be a noisy one with cameos by lots of ghosts and voices. As I studied the top of the mug on the right, I was struck by how dark it gets near the rim. I felt that heavy darkness made me look ‘under’ it and created a welcome sense of tension in the painting. This idea of looking under a line or shape in a painting has long haunted me. It’s straight out of Diebenkorn, Ocean Park- a painting like “Ocean Park No. 129” where he gets you to look under the lines at the top like ducking your head under a clothesline.

The dialogue and free-association are part of the pleasures of the painting process for me. I’m hoping to wrap this one up soon. It’s getting pretty close.

Restless Portrait: A Disappearing Painting

The impulse for this video “Restless Portrait: A Disappearing Painting” stems from the realization of the static nature of traditional portrait painting. The half-smile of the Mona Lisa is frozen forever, and Juan de Pareja gazes out at us, as nobly as the day he sat for the portrait. I realize that I will never see Juan de Pareja blink, and it seems to me that that is the power of these paintings- their enigma and steadfastness. In painting myself, I have a sense that I am an altogether more neurotic person, living in a more unstable time, more twitchy and jittery. The video captures the painting of a self portrait on single canvas, as the image is painted and repainted continually. There is a sense that a painting is never finished, that the act itself is somehow futile and that the end result is a blank canvas, simply more pock-marked and scarred than at the beginning, but just as uncommunicative.

The world simply does not need more self portraits from me, and yet I am compelled to make them. My solution is to recycle the paintings, to paint over them once they are finished. This all-paintings-on-a-single-canvas policy proves exceedingly economical and perhaps lessens my carbon footprint.

There is a grand tradition of this searching, reductive style of portraiture. We know that Giacometti painted and repainted his portraits endlessly. The stalagmite encrustedness of the canvases tells the tale and if we use our imagination, or squint at the palimpsest-like brushstrokes on the canvas, we can envision this gloriously existential process. Lucian Freud’s canvases reveal heavy pentimenti, where limbs, flesh, and sometimes entire bodies are moved around after having been thickly painted. We can see these ghostly appendages and wonder at what caused the artist to change his mind. Finally, Susanna Coffey paints self portraits endlessly, in unceasing variation, and evinces this urge to continually recreate oneself in paint.

This video simply aims to make all of that painting and repainting, all the searching, corrections and dried paint visible and explicit. We can see the process before our eyes, and draw our own conclusions. Using the medium of video, it is possible to capture the blinking of the subject. It is possible to capture the shifts and tilting of restless human beings and there is a sense of animation, where once all movement was only implied.

Although painting is thought of as a medium which celebrates permanence, and paintings live in museums and attics for hundreds of years, we are living in altogether more uncertain times and this painting video speaks of an era where paintings are destroyed immediately after they are created. I still have the canvas that is visible in this video, and I continue to paint new paintings on it.

The audio heard in the piece, a work entitled “Rain On the Motherland” by Kazuki Mishima (used under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License) was selected because the instruments used, including the sitar, reference my Indian heritage. The syncopation of the frenetic beats mimic the pitter patter of the brushwork as the canvas is covered in a drizzle of paint strokes.

An “Everything is Miscellaneous” approach to Web Design

I’ve been anxious to put together a website for sometime now, but I was stumped by the design of it. I wanted to put my work into neat categories- paintings, videos, design etc. and subcategories- digital life, blocks etc. but some videos were of paintings, and works about blocks were done in both painting and photography. The tidy buckets I’d hoped to build were broken even before I’d made them. In frustration I went to my friend Jon Sorenson, a genius Computer Science professor at Butler University, and within ten minutes he’d solved my problem. He immediately advised me to use a category system whereby items could easily reside in more than one category. This multivalent approach really helped to break the narrower view I was trying to impose on the work. The suggestion I most valued was where he pointed out that for future work, I shouldn’t have to worry about which category the work would fall in. Under the approach he suggested the new work could find its own categories organically and without predetermination.

This conversation jogged something in my memory, I remembered David Weinberger’s book, “Everything is Miscellaneous” and I read it immediately. I loved it, and his discussion of tagging led to the tag cloud on the landing page of this site, and the tag collection in the sidebar. I love his discussion of the three orders of order, and have been fascinated by his ideas. I’m intrigued to think of the impact category-atomization might have on academia.

Anyway, that’s the story of how the current organization scheme of this website came into being. It will be interesting to see how long this system works for this site.

Every class should have a logo…

My colleague, Elizabeth Mix, of SnappyProf fame is teaching an awesome class this semester called “Museum as Theatre: White Box/Black Box”. Ever since hearing this course title, the sheer visualness of it lodged in my brain, and I knew I had to create a logo for the class. I developed the identity above, and Elizabeth used it on her syllabus! Now I think every class should have a logo, or at least a title as cool as that.

Creative Commons Licensing of Paintings and Other Works

As the saga of getting this website up and running continues, I’ve added another element to the design. I’ve decided to release my work under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License. I did a good amount of research about this “some rights reserved” approach and feel that it’s appropriate for my work. I hope others can share and benefit from the work I’ve done. The only works that this does not apply to are those for which I’m not the copyright holder, eg. the logos and other commercial work I’ve done.

I’ve used CC licensed audio tracks for videos I’ve done and I’m excited to see if people find ways to use my work. I’m a fan of Jonathan Coulton and Becky Stern, and both of them use CC licenses for their work. Larry Lessig is such a compelling speaker and advocate for Creative Commons and videos of his talks played a role in the decision. (by default the WordPress theme I’m using (deFusion) adds a “Copyright ©” line to the footer). My CC attribution label is in the footer of this site, so share, remix and otherwise enjoy my work!

A bit of exciting news! I’ll be presenting at the 2009 Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities in Honolulu on January 9th, 2009.

My paper is entitled: Painting in the Digital Age: When Pixel meets Paintbrush. Here’s the abstract I submitted:

This paper examines my paintings from the series “Digital Life”, comprised of computer screen imagery rendered in oil paint. The paintings form a link between traditional painting and the contemporary digital world and as such, connect the past with the present.

As an avid museum-goer, I am startled to see how little time viewers spend looking at paintings, but will spend countless hours staring at digital screens. My idea, in order to bridge this divide, has been to turn the screens into paintings: to inject the texture, brushwork and physical quality of oil paint into the virtual, technological realm.

The subject of these paintings is the UI (User Interface) design of computers, the icons and symbols that characterize the digital experience. This interface is familiar to millions of people, often as a mundane feature of their work-lives. By making paintings of them, I am memorializing an experience that millions have on a daily basis; in a sense finding art within everyday experience.

This paper examines these paintings within the context of both contemporary painting and the historical oil-painting tradition. Additionally, this work is influenced by innovations in the fields of computer science and graphic design, and these connections are highlighted and examined.

Finally, since digital images of these paintings are scattered all across the Internet, I examine the recursive nature of making paintings of computer screens and displaying them on the Web.

In an era when there is fierce competition for people’s attention, and digital screens are often examined far more closely than paintings, my work forms a bridge between the two, breathing new life into the dialogue.

I started this series after encountering CAPTCHAS on several major sites including Blogger, Yahoo and MSN. These codes are used to prove that the site’s users are human, and not a spam bot. The whole thing seems very “Blade Runner.” It was fun to take this computerized humanity test and paint them in oils, an all-too human process.
