Win The Shirt Off My Back!

At the Style Savvy preview event, Nintendo passed on this Style Savvy T-shirt, but as you can see, I am neither small enough or gay enough to be able to wear this... especially not out in public! But I thought that perhaps one of our readers might be interested in it. It's a white 100% cotton pre-shrunk T-shirt with a pink pattern and Style Savvy logo on the front, the DS logo on the sleeve, and the pattern repeats on the back. Please keep in mind that this is a women's small, so you'll have to be awfully petite to wear it comfortably. Fair warning!

On the plus side, while the prize may not be for everyone, entering the contest is super-easy. If you're interested, all you have to do is shoot me an E-mail with "Style Savvy Shirt" as the subject line and your full name and mailing address in the body. You have 48 hours from when this post goes live, which means that as of 9:00 PM on Thursday evening, I'm cutting off the entries. Then, from the available entries, I will randomly select a winner and mail them their prize. Simple enough for you? Good luck!

Dragon Age: Origins Goes To "War"

BioWare has announced today that the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars will headline the in-game soundtrack for the just-released Dragon Age: Origins. The title track from their new album This Is War will be making its world debut in the RPG in advance of the album's release on December 8.

"We always like to push the envelope in the entertainment and media space and debuting our title track in a game of this caliber is a great way to communicate our music to fans around the world," said Jared Leto, lead singer of Thirty Seconds to Mars. "We've come a long way from having to rely solely on radio to approach and engage music fans, and Dragon Age: Origins is the perfect game to do this with."

Not sure why this is a selling point, because if you were on the fence about picking this game up, I doubt that the soundtrack is really going to sell you if it's not a music game. Although in addition to being mildly informative, writing this article allows me to run a photo of Jordan Catalano, who will forever remain the perfect high school crush. Don't you love the way he leans?

Club Nintendo Mario Hats Arrive

Today I got some choice Tyra Mail. I was excited because Halloween was my birthday and I haven't gotten any presents from my loved ones yet, but it turns out it was from Nintendo, my one true love. Yours should've arrived by now too, assuming you qualified for it and selected the Mario hat as your Club Nintendo reward, and not Doc Louis's Punch Out!!. If you're obsessive compulsive and plan to order one on eBay note that my head is giant, and the Mario hat still looks ridiculously and awkward on me. But it fits pretty well, it has an elastic band that tightens in the back, similar to the Scribblenauts hat. If anyone else got theirs, post your picture in the comments!

Next Zelda On Wii To Implement MotionPlus Targeting

Shigeru Miyamoto seems to be a fountain of intersting tidbits about upcoming game features, especially those about which he's particularly excited. And he definitely seems to get his way when he's excited.

While it came out that Miyamoto was the only one at Nintendo on board with the idea of a MotionPlus-enabled Legend of Zelda back before the new plug-in technology had found its way onto store shelves and behind couch cushions, it looks like the Mario Mastermind won out in the end. A semi-annual sales report had Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata discussing some plans for the future, including some details of their implementing MotionPlus controls for a new Zelda.

We've managed to gather quite a few creative team members for Zelda Spirit Tracks, so I'd like Zelda Wii to also enjoy creative development as much as possible. About MotionPlus: we're implementing it so that players can feel like they themselves are holding the sword. In the previous Zelda (Twilight Princess Wii) the targeting was based on the IR pointer. This time, however, we'll be using MotionPlus for a variety of more convenient targeting systems that will allow for more pleasant gameplay.

The atmosphere and characters in Twilight Princess already made it a blast to play, and it's still one of the longest Wii games since launch. The targeting systems were generally tolerable with the IR-sensing technology, and I know the waggle-to-attack mechanic tired more than a few practiced forearms. Given Nintendo's track record for still, basically, having the best-polished and -implemented games using the vanilla Wiimote and then the MotionPlus (as featured in Wii Sports Resort), I once again have visions dancing in my head of a solid and fun swordfighting experience on a platform for which it seems especially suited. Or, failing that, an exciting new way to aim arrows at those hilarious cuckoos.

There are still precious few details about the next Zelda title on Wii, but we'll keep you posted when anything good pops up.

Video: Krystian Majewski's TRAUMA

TRAUMA Gameplay Preview from Krystian Majewski on Vimeo.

The above rather lengthy seven-minute video is gameplay footage of a game called TRAUMA that is to be released by the end of the year. Atmospheric and eye-catching might be words I use to describe it (I started to write creepy, and then realized it does not creep me out, but does give me a sense of melancholy). From its own site, it is described as:

TRAUMA tells a story of a young woman who survives a car accident. Recovering at the hospital, she has dreams that shed light on different aspects of her identity - such as the way she deals with the loss of her parents. TRAUMA lets you experience those dreams in an interactive way, reminiscent of Point-and-Click Adventure Games. It builds upon this established formula by introducing a gesture-based interface, real-time 3D technology for dynamic level layouts, unique photographic visuals and a level design philosophy that focuses on creating a rich experience rather than an elaborate puzzle challenge. Combined with the unconventional story, it is aimed to be a compact and deep game for a literate and mature audience.

It will require Adobe Flash and be playable in most browsers. For those who want a copy on their hard drive, such will be provided for a small fee, and there will be a later edition released on physical media. As was evident of my write-up for Fatale, I am a strong proponent of games that give me an experience over which I can mull and chew.

Here's to adding one more game to the end-of-the-year queue.

Project Sackway: Birthday Edition

Well it looks like Tiny Dancer isn't the only one with a birthday recently. Some of you might remember that a year ago you went out and set down a nice chunk of change to adopt a lovable little Sackboy and let him make his way into your heart, even if you did change what he looked like 100 times in the process of learning to love him (not to mention all the fiery deaths those boys died to).

That's right, LittleBigPlanet has turned one year old, and Media Molecule is celebrating the best way they know how, by giving you free sackboy costumes to dress up your own sackboy for this momentous occasion. The first costume is one that proves that it is a piece of cake to bake a pretty Sackboy. That's right, in true birthday tradition, one of the costumes is that of a piece of pink frosted cake with a single candle on the head. The other outfit is the one that has a number of people excited, since it has been unavailable at the store for over a year now. That's right, spaceboy is making a comeback for one week only, which means that you can make your sackboy don this fantastic spacesuit anytime you wish.

The best part about this birthday celebration? These two outfits come at the lovely birthday price of "Free". So on Thursday, Nov. 5th, make sure to hop onto the LittleBigPlanet Store to get your two free costumes, and we'll keep our eyes peeled for the other upcoming specials coming from Media Molecule in the next couple of weeks.

Happy Birthday LittleBigPlanet! [Media Molecule]

Video: The Totally Rad Show Gets Totally Freaked Out

Halloween may be behind us now, but that doesn't mean the scares have to end, right? Over at The Totally Rad Show, the guys take on Ju-On: The Grudge the way that it was meant to be played: lights off, sound up, and drinks in hand! While I think that I may be a little too much of a scaredy cat to play the game myself, I found watching Alex, Jeff, and Dan to be an enjoyable experience. There's always a little fun to be had watching other people get the pants scared off of them, especially if it stars three cuties that have the tendency to clutch each other in the dark while filmed with a night vision lens.

Have any of you checked out the game / haunted house simulator for yourself? Am I being too much of wimp or should I avoid this title like a strange noise heard in the distance?

Video: Prince Of Persia Movie Trailer - Needs More Shirtless Gyllenhaal

Let's face it, the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time movie is first and foremost an excuse to get Jake Gyllenhaal to jump around with his shirt off. And I fully support that. But what are we supposed to make of this trailer that was just revealed for the film? Not only does it feature very little shirtless Gyllenhaal action, but it actually looks like it might be a decent movie. This could disrupt the years of a cherished history where movies based on videogames are abominations not fit even to be used as torture.

Sure, the movie isn't following the exact plot of the game, and the game's signature acrobatic puzzles are nowhere to be seen, but I am still optimistic. Gyllenhaal's prince seems to take the Sands of Time character minus the angst of Warrior Within and Two Thrones, then adds a bit of the more recent Prince of Persia's snark. At the very least, it looks like it'll be a good popcorn flick to kick off the movies of summer when it hits theaters on May 28.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Dated for USA?

If there is one thing I will say about Atlus, it is that they are not afraid to localize just about anything. Seriously, when was the last time that they decided NOT to bring something to the US? Not that I'm complaining, you stick their logo on something and I'll be first in line for a preorder.

That being said, there has been no confirmation that Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is getting released in the United States. Or has there? Amazon released a pre-order listing for March 10, 2010 for the title. Confirmation? No, but it certainly does make the little title a lot more likely.

Okay, so it's really not much of a shock. Lets hope that Atlus isn't going to leave us in the dark for this one, and if I can see the game in five months I'll be more than happy to ablidge them with my $40.

Review: Eliminate Pro Brings Multiplayer FPS Action To The iPhone

ngmoco, the developer responsible for extremely popular iPhone apps like Topple and Rolando, has released Eliminate Pro at long last. What they're billing as the "the first online FPS that fits in your pocket," Eliminate Pro is a free, micro-transaction supported FPS that allows you to compete against other players over 3G or Wi-Fi in deathmatch style arenas.

The game is completely free to download; when you first begin you have an energy bar that depletes as you play, becoming completely exhausted in a few matches. While you have energy left, you generate credits that are in turn used to upgrade your unit's armor and weaponry, improving your survivability. While your energy will replenish over time, you can purchase power cells in-app that will do it immediately, allowing you to continue playing and generating resources. The cells range from $0.99 for a pack of 20 to $29.99 for a pack of 975; if I understand the menu correctly, your energy meter caps out at 30 cells, but I wasn't brave enough just yet to spend the dollar to find out. I was out of energy after about three rounds, with a one-third recharge not happening for seventy-five minutes. When you run out of energy you're still able to play in arenas, but you cease accruing points until you've recharged. Energy recharge cells can only be purchased for cash, while gear can only be purchased with credits, although purchased power cells can be traded in for credits at a ratio of 120 power cells to 1000 credits. While out of energy I was warned that I would "queue slower," meaning that priority is given to players with full energy when match-making. Unfortunately, if you want to play anything more than casually you're going to need to shell out for the purchased energy cells at some point. After the first one-third recharges, the next recharge doesn't happen for another four and a half hours.

For an iPhone game the graphics are pretty stellar. The game is 3D, set in first person perspective, complete with requisite "training video" cut scenes that set the basis for what you're doing in the arenas as well as explaining how to play. I was extremely impressed with the appearance of everything and the visuals-- from the game itself to the UI and everything else-- looked amazing and very well polished. From a visual standpoint Eliminate Pro definitely raises the bar on what's possible on the iPhone.

In terms of gameplay, my impressions were a bit more tempered. When I first heard about this game months ago I was looking forward to it heavily, although I was slightly concerned about how a FPS would play on a touch screen device with no controls to speak of. Although I will give this the caveat that with the limitations of the platform I think ngmoco did as best as they could, controlling my character during an arena was an exercise in frustration. The game uses two fingers for control: your left thumb controls a virtual joystick in order to move your character, while your right thumb is responsible for both aiming and firing your weapon. You aim where you want to shoot and then tap rapidly to actually fire-- there is also an "auto-fire" option that can be turned on, which makes your weapon fire as long as you have a target in your sights, and without this option I think the game would frankly be unplayable. While I'm sure it's a toggle for the masochistic "hardcore," for me it was the thing that saved me from putting the game away a few minutes in, because the attempt at aiming, moving and firing all at once was just too difficult to manage on such a small device with such a small amount of screen space.

After I cranked up the sensitivity for the look controls to their max, the game got easy enough for me to deal with that I think it's going to be a matter of just getting used to how to play, rather than a failing of the game itself. Again, although the controls frustrated me, I have to stress that for what it is I think they're really good-- the iPhone itself is just not the most intuitive of gaming devices (despite whatever Steve Jobs wants to say to the contrary) and I think ngmoco succeeded as best as anyone would be able to. Perhaps ironically, in the maps I played I was consistently either in first or second place, which means I'm either doing well or the controls are that difficult for a newbie-- I'll leave which to your opinions.

There are five maps for combat which are selected randomly when playing with others. The maps are pretty diverse in appearance and have a scattering of environmental hazards and powerups; the powerups range from things like accelerated health to increased damage to cloaking devices or jetpacks and give a strategic edge on the otherwise straight-shooting gameplay. Missions have a time and kill limit so they go by pretty quickly-- great for a quick in-and-out experience.

Social networking is enabled over their Plus+ platform, which is responsible for both score-keeping and match-making. As games against other players are ranked, the match-making system ensures players are grouped against others with similar skills and prowess on the battlefield. In my limited experimenting it appears that skill ranking points only accrue while you are energized. There was hardly any wait to be matched up for a mission (even with the above "slower queue"), but that could depend on time of day. I'm not sure where I connected to since there was no feedback on ping or the location of other players, but while fighting there was hardly any discernible lag on Wi-Fi. 3G took a bit longer getting into a match but while playing I didn't notice a huge difference in latency there either. Rounds can either be matched with strangers or with friends in private gameplay.

When you have your shiny credits in hand, you can purchase additional armor and weapons or cosmetic skins for your appearance. At the moment, when something is purchased it's final, there's no way to trade items back in for credits. You can also use credits to purchase upgrades on items in inventory, everything from improved shielding on armor to increased clip size on weapons.

Overall the game is an impressive effort in porting first person shooters to the iPhone. Where the control schema is unwieldy, I do think it's probably as good as anyone could do on the device, and the game more than makes up for it by the impressive quality of its appearance and the wealth of customization available between armor, weapons and your character's look. The matchmaking has been handled seamlessly in my experience so far, giving you a great gameplay experience whether connected over Wi-Fi or the cellular network. All in all it's a fun game and an example of what future titles can aspire towards.

Does Shooting Bunnies Make Me A Bad Person?

I have a confession to make. As a city boy who came from a suburban upbringing, I haven't had a lot of experience with hunting. I don't really like the idea. But when I noticed a demo of Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2010 had popped up on Xbox LIVE, I decided to see what it was all about. I knew that Cabela had a whole series of games, but didn't know anything about them. So I thought it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

The demo is essentially the first level of the game, which walks you through the controls. The graphics on the Xbox 360 are gorgeous, and impressively realistic, although the constant need to activate your "hunter sense" sucks because that makes everything black-and-white except for the specific targets that you sense. What I found quite appealing is that it's like a FPS where you have to move slowly and snipe your targets from a distance. Whenever I play an FPS, that's usually what I prefer to do anyway, so it's like this was made for me!

On the plus side, it's never too tedious to sneak up on your prey (which in the first level are all various kinds of deer), and they have shooting gallery sections in between to break up the monotony. First you take shots at ducks flying overhead, then later you'll aim your trusty shotgun at scampering bunny rabbits. These bits I found less entertaining because it's all fast-paced, so my accuracy suffers tremendously. Plus, it takes forever to reload! The level concludes with their version of a boss battle, which in this case is a mountain lion. You have to shoot it dead before it kills you. If it does get its claws into you, it's a simple matter of mashing buttons until you can push it off an take another shot.

I would never go hunting in reality, but I have to admit that virtual hunting was kind of engrossing. I loved sneaking around in the tree line and finding just the right spot with some cover so I could carefully line up my shot and pick out the buck with the biggest rack so it would get me the most points. It's surprisingly stingy with the points, though, making it difficult to get gold medals. I guess that'll help with replayability. There is something disturbingly satisfying, though, about lining up the shot and then watching that one bullet take down your prey.

Does that make me a horrible person? I hope not, because I have another confession to make... I now own Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2010, so I'm going to be killing all kinds of innocent wildlife! Look out!

Guitar Hero DLC Rocks Novmeber

If you're getting bored shredding to the same old songs, Activision would like you to know that there's a bunch of new tuneage coming in November for Guitar Hero. As I mentioned before, on November 5, you'll be able to import 69 tracks from Guitar Hero 5 into Band Hero, or go the other way and import 61 tracks from Band Hero into Guitar Hero 5. (The Guitar Hero website has a FAQ with more information about compatibility)

November 12 will bring a three song pack from Lenny Kravitz featuring "Let Love Rule," "Lady" and "Fly Away." The following week, on the 19th, KISS has a triple pack including "Modern Day Delilah," "Lick It Up" and "I Was Made For Loving You." Naturally, you can also buy the songs seperately for the usual price on the 360, PS3 and Wii.

On November 24, Neversoft is releasing a free six song track pack from bands featuring their own employees! You've got "Lemon Frosting" by Bunny Knutson, "RockNRola" by Nancy Fullforce, "From the Blue/Point of No Return/T.T.R.T.S." by An Endless Sporadic, "Love Holds It Down" by Dom Liberati, "You Really Like Me" by Davidicus and "Guilty Pleasures" by Tony Solis. However, this special free pack will only be available for the 360 and PS3.

Things aren't all bad for Wii Guitar Heroes and Heroines, though, because starting on the 24th, you'll be able to download 8 more tracks from Metallica's Death Magnetic album previously only available on the other consoles. The songs, which will be available only as singles, are "All Nightmare Long," "That Was Just Your Life," "The Day That Never Comes," "The Judas Kiss," "The End of the Line," "The Unforgiven III," "Suicide & Redemption J.H." and "Suicide & Redemption K.H."

That should hopefully be enough to keep you all busy on Thanksgiving during that horrible time between finishing the turkey and being able to sit down to pie!

Magic: The Gathering - Tactics

Wizards of the Coast and Sony Online Entertainment are collaborating on Magic: The Gathering - Tactics a 3D online tactical strategy game for PC and the PS3. The game is set in the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse, though the gameplay will be different from the card game. From the press release:

"The growing Magic: The Gathering community has an insatiable desire for great strategic game experiences. Sony Online Entertainment is the perfect partner to transform the best of Magic's story, strategy and competitive play into a fantastic 'Tactics' game experience for current and new Magic fans," said Greg Leeds, president, Wizards of the Coast.

Magic: The Gathering - Tactics will allow players to command forces of dramatic 3D figures and powerful spell cards pulled from the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse. Players can participate in single player scenarios or jump right into PVP action against other players worldwide, 24 hours per day. Magic: The Gathering - Tactics is expected to feature regular content expansions, a robust tournament environment, an achievement and rankings program, and original stories of the Planeswalkers of Magic: The Gathering.

Though I had a Magic: The Gathering deck, the Wizards of the Coast developed Pokemon TCG is more my game. First edition sealed Ancient Mew! Wizards certainly knows how to make a balanced and fun TCG, and I'm excited to see how the Magic gameplay translates to a tactical game. Keep an eye on the official website for information on how to sign up for a beta account.

Professor Layton Figure Able to Pose, Can't Find Your Keys For You

For those that collect import figures the Revoltech line from Kaiyodo has always meant two things: incredible detail and remarkable articulation. Thanks to Andres Cerrato over at Tomopop, we got a glimpse of what the line's next round of figures the recent Revoltech Expo that took place in Japan this past weekend. There's tons of great figures on the horizon that include emo-goth icon Jack Skellington, the Dark Night version of Batman, Giant Robo, and a T-Rex, but the best announcement has to be Professor Layton from the incredible puzzle/mystery game series by Level 5.

As a prototype, the figure seen at the Expo wasn't painted or colored yet, but it's amazing to see just how well sculptors were able to bring the game's clean, but illustrative style into a 3d space. As if the figure wasn't enough, that table and tea cup set is the icing on the cake. Hopefully this mean that we can expect to see other Layton related figures somewhere down the road. I would love to have a miniaturized Professor and Luke on my desk enjoying a cup of tea. Head on over to the Tomopop article to check out all the goods from the show.

First Details Of Final Fantasy XIII's Character Upgrade System Appear

I can't speak for any of you, but one of my favorite parts of playing a new RPG is learning the ins and outs of a new upgrading system. Whether it involves Skill-Linking, Magic-Drawing, or Materia-Slotting - if it's nuanced enough to make choices fun and rewarding enough that I can't wait to ding that level up, a good stat system can keep me hitting the menus like a lush at a bar that stocks only numbers.

Which is part of why the new details announced for Final Fantasy XIII's system intrigue me so far - apparently, it foregoes specific 'levelling' of characters in favor of a general XP-currency called Crystalium, which is used to choose upgrades (like +1 strength) or powers (like Blizzara). The scans just released by Shonen Jump show the choices being arranged in a ring, which branch off to open up new nodes once unlocked. From the first details, it sounds like a blend between FFX's Sphere Grid with its branching paths and FFXII's License Board, which used exhaustable points to unlock bigger and better upgrades.

One can imagine what this might mean for the gamer staring at a menu - rather than try to grind their LVL number higher, they can adjust the battle difficulty on their own by either focusing on easy-to-unlock skills and HP boosts, or toughing it out without those stats and going for the motherlode skill on the circle which requires rather more points to unlock. It's these sorts of character-specific choices which make the grind of any good RPG worth it, and it seems to reinforce the same unrestrained style which shines out from the dynamic-looking battle system.

For now, we can only wait for more details and hope these new elements come together to make this Final Fantasy worth the wait.

Warhammer Removes Time Limit From Free Trial

The latest newsletter from Mythic announces that commitment-phobic and/or thrifty gamers will be able to enjoy the 10 day free trial of Warhammer Online for more than ten days - indefinitely, in fact.

No, this doesn't mean you'll get to play the whole game for free, but you'll have unlimited free access to the starting areas, AKA Tier 1 areas, AKA the new streamlines "New User Journey" being introduced in the 1.3.2 Path of Conquest update.

The New User Journey places all new players in their respective Empire or Chaos starting area regardless of race, offers a new voiceover to explain the major gameplay concepts, and revises content and quest flow for the starting areas. New players will also be auto-guilded in "new player guilds," which should lubricate things socially.

Never enough of that, is there?

Video: Return Of Alice Teaser

In February, Asterick reported that Spicy Horse, where American McGee is currently, and EA would be working on a sequel to American McGee's Alice, which will be available for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Here is the teaser site, with little on it as yet.

This is how you get the teaser video above, which has a similar style, but is much more engaged in stop motion animation. An important note that the video leaves us is the year 2011. As for the story, it appears that Alice has suffered a relapse, with the iconic pierced, scrawny Cheshire Cat back as her guide.

Jump below the fold for a rather magnificent piece of concept art:

Milla Shows Us How To Be A Badass Mommy

Milla Jovovich, everyone's favorite kickass heroine of the Resident Evil movie series and the perfect being from Fifth Element is also a loving mother with a 2 year-old girl named Ever. While working on the movie The Fourth Kind, Parade magazine decided to ask Milla some questions on her movies, her child, and her influence.

Some questions included asking why her Resident Evil movies do so well in Japan, and a movie (.45) that never made it to the big screen but with which Milla really conected; however, the most interesting question of the lot was Milla's advice to how parents should deal with their children seeing violence and sex in the media:

"I think parents need to take a lot more responsibility than they do about whether it's OK for their children to go to Resident Evil or any other movie with violence or sex or whatever. It's really easy to blame Hollywood for violence having an effect on kids, but movies would have no power if parents would just set their own standards. And it's the same with video games."

What a novel idea, parents actually taking an interest in what their children see and play. A good portion of what children interact with can be effected by talking to them about the standards you want in your house. Then again, all of that actually involves "parenting" your children, and I think sometimes it's just easier to let the videogames and the TV play the babysitter. In the end, I'm just glad she has what seems like a level head on her shoulders, maybe that's why all the zombies want it.
