When my children were all out of high school I really felt the empty nest syndrome. I had been so involved in their lives growing up. I had always been the team mom in every sport, and had always been the room mom for all their classes when they were younger. I have always enjoyed embroidery with this great machine that I bought a few years ago. Every time my children were on some type of team, I would always end up embroidering some part of their uniform. It might have been a shirt or a hat. One time when they were all on a summer swim team, I even embroidered beach towels. So after they all went off to college, I decided to open an embroidery business. I love making crafts and doing all other types of things like that though, so it's no big deal to do that. Plus, it gives me a little something to do while I get antsy waiting around to finally get married!

I was with this woman for almost two years. When the subject of marriage and kids came up I got shut down big time. It’s something I’ve always wanted so I can’t really give that up and my mother is seeing me unhappy and now all of a sudden has blamed it on my lesbian lifestyle. She said this wouldn’t be a problem if I was with a man instead but I know that’s not true. I have 3 straight friends all around the same age as me all wanting to get married and have children with deadbeat boyfriends that string them along. I don’t think my Mom is trying to be mean. I think she’s just not used to seeing me so upset and is reaching for anything to say to try and help me feel better. She actually liked my ex up until the whole no ring no baby thing came up. We broke up 6 months ago. I’m 27 and I want to have children soon before I turn 30 at least. I’m ready to start a family. She’s 39 and has told me again and again that she has no intentions of tying the knot or starting a family. Now that we are technically broken up we are still seeing each other. I don’t think she’s seeing anyone else because she calls me at all hours of the night. I got us concert tickets for next month. I’m also thinking of asking her to go with me to a wedding in December. Maybe the wedding will inspire her. Should I ask her? Should I just move on? It seems like there’s nothing out there and she is so beautiful (inside and out) and I can’t seem to let go. She looks like an angel but she’s anything but. The problem is she has too many options and women throw themselves at her all the time so why would she want to settle down with me? She’s a brooding Shane type. There’s no one else out there like her. She drives me crazy! Help!

I don’t know what issue to tackle first your mother or your ex. I’ll start with your mother. Parents say the strangest things. It’s sad that she seems to equivalate the marriage issue with being gay. You’re right in giving your mom the benefit of the doubt. She’s lucky you are willing to see her offhanded comment from her perspective- although this may have brought up some dormant disapproval of your lifestyle. You seem to have a nice relationship with your mother so maybe set up some ground rules: When she has love issues you won’t suggest she become a lesbian and when you have them she won’t suggest you go straight! But you’re not asking about your mom. So in answer to your question, sure, ask her to the wedding, but be prepared to move on. The wedding could inspire her but realistically speaking there’s a good chance it won’t. The hard truth is you just might not be the one she wants to commit to. And you don’t want to jump into marriage and kids with someone whose heart isn’t in it! Even if you got ‘your way’ would you really always want to wonder if she’s happy? Marriage isn’t the type of thing you can just jump into and hope for the best. Consider it from a legal perspective- alimony, child support and shared custody. Have you considered other options? You can always start the baby thing on your own terms if that’s something you’re comfortable with- especially if you have a steady support system of family and friends. And then you can keep an eye out for a suitable baby mama! Also, always consider this when considering marriage: Can you imagine if you marry the wrong person, have a kid, and then, five years later, you meet the right person?!

DeWilde:

If you take someone that doesn’t want to get married to a wedding, the wedding could send her running towards the nearest exit. Just like babysitting your nephew for a day at Disney is not gonna change someone’s mind on having a kid either- and might just have the opposite effect. The baby thing is kinda like you either have it or you don’t. Some little girls use pillow cases and wear them as veils and have pretend weddings with their best friend. They dress their babydolls and pretend they’re real. Then there are those who take those same dolls and rip their heads off! The latter should skip the parenting altogether! Sometimes you don’t expect to be the marriage vow type and one day you meet the right person that you want to be with forever- it’s unexpected but not forced. I think that’s what Vixen is getting at when she points out the harsh truth that you might simply not be the one. Maybe she’ll never find someone and look back in regret but you don’t want to force anything on anyone either! Here are your options as far as I see them: You can break it off now with the possibility that there may be someone out there that wants the same things as you do. Or, if this really is the person you feel you have to be with, then you have to decide whether you’re willing to live with such major compromises. And about your mother I say you fill her closest with tangled wire hangers! That’ll keep her occupied for a while!

I'm 19 and I just had my first experience with a girl. We were in my dorm room and next thing I knew she was kissing me. What happened next was totally weird and out of the blue. She went down on me but didn't stay down there long enough for anything to really happen. We weren't drunk or anything. Now she wants to pretend like nothing went down. One minute she's ignoring me and giving me the cold shoulder at school. The next minute she's just acting normal and saying hi and stuff. I'm totally embarrassed. I like her a lot. I didn't know I liked her until this happened. What do I do?

Ooh wee! Sounds like you're learning a lot at school this semester! Eh hem! To start, don't be embarrassed, after all she made the first move. She's probably feeling a little embarrassed herself. Being the initiator can be confusing and in this case it seems SHE was the alpha! I'm sure she has a lot of her own questions she's trying to sort out (which may be why she's avoiding talking about it). She might be confused about her sexuality, wondering if she did something wrong, wondering if she did something right...maybe it just didn't suit her...you never can really tell what's going on in a girl's head! Just kick back, as patiently as you can, and wait to see what move she makes next. Let her come to you on her own terms. If you put the pressure on or confront her you may just push her away. If you feel like you must talk to her about it right away, let her know, casually, that you are open to talking about what happened when ever she's ready. More importantly let her know that you actually liked the whole experience and that you're into her. If she still blows you off remember: There's plenty of fish swimming around campus!

DeWilde:

I say go the more aggressive route. If you really are the Alpha Female don't let her dwell on it for too long. Next time you find yourself alone with her YOU make the first move. But only, of course, if you get some sort of signal (she's batting her eye lashes, twirling her hair, if she's looking at you flirtatiously). If you don't get any signals then yes, by all means, wait for her to come to you. You don't wanna go in if she's putting off the 'friend' vibe or worse yet if she's putting off the 'back off' vibe. She may just actually want to forget that anything happened. You're new to the world of lesploration! You'll get the hang of mind reading soon enough! If it does turn out that you were just an experiment for her, then just move on, and maybe write her a nice thank you card along with an invite to your coming out party! After all it seems like she's gone ahead and opened your alpha femme eyes to something new and exciting!

Communication Is Key

My wife and I have a pretty great relationship.

I didn't say it was perfect, but really, it's pretty great. I don't know if everybody in the world is looking to get married, or even to settle down with someone long term. But if you are, then I think my wife and I are a pretty good example of what a great relationship looks like.

It didn't come overnight, we didn't always have a great relationship, and there were times when we didn't know if we would make it.

All in all, I know we're both on the same page now, we're both in this for life, and we love each other with every fiber of our being. What got us to this point, and through all the tough times in between, was true communication. I firmly believe that in this lesbian relationship, communication is KEY.

Coming from a history of failed relationships with both men and women, I can honestly say that going into this I had a clear picture in my mind of what would and wouldn't work for me in a relationship.

The problem with this is that it became a double edged sword for me in that having this sense of clarity was more of a hindrance than a help. I was becoming set in my ways. Then here she comes, the love of my life, and I knew in an instant there was something deeper there that I should pursue, but she had a clear picture of her own as well. It seemed as though we had both found the person who would be the perfect partner for each other, and yet taking that step towards relationship bliss was a frightening and sobering thought because we both knew what we wanted and expected the other to rise up to that expectation.

It's hard when you see something within somebody that they don't see themselves.

It can also be frustrating for one person to expect something from another person who has no clue what's expected of them. I have often found myself wishing that she could just read my mind, or I hers. Alas, that is not how it works and so I am back in the real world and the only thing that seems to work there for us is to talk about it. Even when it's something you don't want to talk about. Especially then. Sometimes my wife and I have had conversations where we have told each other things that were uber-embarrassing, or extra-sensitive, or highly confidential. (I have to add here that I trust my wife with my secrets completely, and she knows I am a bit of a blabber mouth but I also know how to keep my mouth shut about critical things too.) Having the guts to talk about things with each other that might bring forth anger, jealousy, or embarrassment has really changed our relationship.

We know each other that much better, more than anyone else in the world knows us, and we truly understand where the other is coming from.

We may not always agree with each other but at least we can understand each other and work with that information as best we can. And those uncomfortable emotions eventually go away, but what also goes away is the fear. The fear that a misunderstanding might lead to a break up, or the fear that there are secrets you know nothing about. Insecurity and anxiety don't do well for relationships in my experience, and now that I have a secure, stable, and communicative relationship with my wife we can work together to focus on other, finer things in life; and truly enjoy each other in the process.
