Though they’ve been around since the ’90s, quick response codes didn’t catch on until the age of smartphones and widespread mobile internet access. Now, they’re easier than ever to scan and, if you have an iPhone, you can make it happen in just a few clicks without any extra apps.

You’ll find QR codes everywhere — from product labels to restaurant menus to workplace equipment instructions — so knowing how to quickly scan can help you make the most of them and keep more information at your fingertips. Let’s take a look at how to scan QR codes on iPhones.

What Is a QR Code?

A QR code is a type of barcode that’s easy for digital devices to scan. Their classic square, pixelated design lends itself to some attractive designs. Unlike standard barcodes, which only scan horizontally, QR codes are more practical and functional because users can scan them in any orientation. This two-way design also gives QR codes the advantage of storing much more information than traditional barcodes. QR codes are also useful because they are still legible even if up to 30% of the code gets damaged.

With all their versatility and slick appearances, you’ll find QR codes all over the place, such as the following.

Restaurants: In the age of contactless service, many restaurants and bars place QR codes on their tables. Diners can scan the QR code to access the menu online, and the restaurants can easily update their food and drink offerings.

Products: Want to see more detailed specs or nutrition info on the item you’re buying? Scan the QR code.

Ads: Instead of telling users to type in a long web address to buy or learn more, invite them to scan the code.

Coupons, tickets and memberships: Pull any of these up on your phone, and you may get a QR code to show the scanner. Some QR codes can add passes and tickets directly to the Wallet app.

Business identification: From warehouses to medical facilities, many businesses use QR codes to identify and track products, devices and equipment.

QR codes often open websites, but they can also launch an app you have installed or enter numbers into a system.

How to Scan a QR Code

If you have an iPhone or iPad, scanning QR codes is as easy as opening your camera app. This feature is native to the device, so you don’t have to download any additional apps or tools.

Scanning a QR Code From the Camera App

Here’s how to scan a QR code on an iPhone or iPad.

Open your camera app. If you don’t have it on your Home Screen, you can access it from the Control Center. A faster way to access the camera is via the camera icon on your Lock Screen.

From the rear-facing camera, put the QR code in view. Don’t click the shutter. The device should recognize the QR code and display a preview of where it leads, such as a website’s URL.

Click the link that appears. Click the yellow preview and the link will open in. your default browser, such as Safari or Google Chrome.

You’ll need a mobile signal or Wi-Fi for this to work.

Scanning a QR Code From Photos

You can also scan a QR code from a static image. You might want to do this if you can’t get the code to scan the usual way, don’t have internet access or want to save the code for later.

Here’s how to scan a QR code from a photo on iPhone.

Take a photo of the QR code: Snap a picture of the QR code from the Camera app. To scan a QR code on your iPhone screen, such as one displayed on a website or email, screenshot it and follow these next steps.

Open the photo in the Photos app: You can open Photos from the icon on your Home Screen, the image on the bottom left of the Camera app or the phone’s search bar.

Select the Live Text icon: This circular button appears in the bottom right and has a picture of a rounded square with lines in it.

Click on the QR code: Tap the code and a preview should appear telling you where the code leads. Click on that banner.

Scanning a QR Code From the Control Center

Another way to scan a QR code is from Apple’s designated Code Scanner. It’s similar to the camera app, but opens the code automatically and offers a bigger viewfinder.

Before you can use Code Scanner, you’ll need to set it up in the Control Center.

From the Settings app, click on Control Center and tap the “+” button next to Code Scanner. Doing so adds the feature to your Control Center, which appears when you swipe down from the top right-hand corner of the screen — or the bottom of the screen on models with a home button. You can also find it by swiping down on your Home Screen and using the search bar that appears.

Select Code Scanner from the Control Center or Spotlight. Open the Control Center and select Code Scanner. It appears as a miniature QR code.

Scan the QR code. Center the code in the square that appears. You can also tap the flashlight icon to add more light. The code will automatically open once the device recognizes it.

Other Ways to Scan QR Codes With an iPhone

Some other ways to scan a QR code include the following.

Third-party scanning apps: You’ll find plenty of scanning apps on the App Store. Some are no-frills, and others offer additional features like saving and sharing codes and syncing them with iCloud and other devices.

Other apps: Many apps you might already use can scan QR codes, too. For example, Snapchat and Twitter use QR codes as “ID cards,” so users can scan someone’s QR code to follow or add them as a friend. Pinterest allows users to create QR codes to share specific boards and pins, while retailer apps might allow you to scan a QR code from a printed mailer to add coupons to your account.

Getting the Most of Your iPhone With QR Codes

iPhones are virtually synonymous with quick, easy-to-use features, including QR code scanning. Whether you want to get more info on a product, add a ticket to your Wallet or pull up a menu, you can use whatever method you prefer. The iPhone’s Camera and Code Scanner apps are easy options, but you can also scan directly from third-party apps. Now that you know how to use them, keep an eye out for QR codes to see how handy they can be.

Smartphones have become a major part of many people’s daily lives over the last decade. From texting to GPS, users rely on their devices for many of their everyday activities.

In 2020, there were more than 294 million smartphone users in the United States alone. That is a lot of individual devices! To avoid filling landfills with old phones, every user should know how to reset their iPhones properly so they can be reused or recycled.

Returning your device to factory settings is the first step to giving your phone a new life without compromising your personal information.

When You Might Need to Reset Your iPhone

Our cell phones hold a lot of sensitive data on them, including the following:

Names

Passwords

iCloud accounts

Purchases and subscriptions

Photos and videos

Contacts

Bank accounts

Social media profiles

Because users often link their personal information to their phones, you need to know when you should reset your device to avoid costly consequences if your device gets into the wrong hands. Your phone’s performance may also indicate when it is time to clear your data.

The following are the most common reasons for needing to reset your phone to factory settings:

Selling it: Many people choose to sell their iPhone when they’re finished with it. You never want the buyer to have access to your personal accounts and data. Resetting your phone will help prevent someone from stealing your identity or using your bank account.

Trading it in: If you’re trading your phone in for a newer or different model, know most trade-in places require users to return their device to factory settings to simplify the process and keep information safe.

Giving it to someone else: You need to make sure you have cleared your data, whether you are giving your phone to a family member or a stranger. No matter who you are giving your used device to, protecting your private information should be a priority.

Troubleshooting a problem: If your phone is freezing or glitching often, it can be helpful to reset your device. Wiping your device can help address sluggishness and fix typical malfunctions that impair your phone’s performance.

How to Prepare Your iPhone for Factory Reset

When performing a factory reset on your phone, you need to keep some important things in mind. First off, you will want to make sure you do the right kind of reset. A factory reset is not turning your phone off or restarting it. Instead, a factory reset clears all your personal information and returns the device to its original settings.

You will need to collect the following information to ensure you can successfully complete a factory reset:

Your Apple ID

Your Apple ID password

Your iPhone’s passcode

Once you have this information, you can begin prepping for the reset.

1. Ensure Your Device Is Updated

Before you reset, make sure your phone is up-to-date with the latest iPhone operating system (iOS). You can do this by going to Settings, General, then Software Update. If any updates are available, choose Download and Install.

2. Log off and Remove Personal Accounts

For added security, go through every account saved on your phone and log out of each one. This includes apps and social media profiles.

3. Turn off Find My iPhone

Before resetting your phone, you will want to turn off Find My iPhone for the specific device. You can do so by following these steps:

Go to Settings.

Choose your name.

Pick Find My iPhone.

Turn Find My iPhone to Off.

4. Remove Your SIM Card

The last step is to remove your subscriber identity model (SIM) card. Depending on what kind of SIM card your iPhone uses, you will want to either physically remove the card from your iPhone or deactivate your eSIM. You can consult your phone carrier to ensure you complete this step correctly.

How to Factory Reset Your iPhone

When returning your device to its factory settings, be sure to identify the right kind of reset. The following are the three different levels of resetting an iPhone:

Soft reset: When you turn your iPhone off using the Power Off Slider, this is called a soft reset. When turning the phone back on, the device’s settings will remain the same as before turning it off. iPhones do not have a single power button, so a soft reset requires different button combinations, depending on the model.

Force restart: Similar to performing a soft reset, the user must press a combination of buttons to force restart an iPhone, usually including the volume or side buttons and the home button. Users do this when a device is frozen or won’t turn on. The Apple logo will appear as the phone turns back on for this restart. Like a soft reset, a force restart won’t remove the device’s settings.

Factory reset: This type of reset is also called factory restore and is the most dramatic method. A reset returns a phone to its original settings. To complete a factory reset successfully, the user must go through the settings on a device instead of using button combinations.

You need to understand these differences since your private information could be stolen or inappropriately used if you perform a soft reset or force restart instead of a factory reset when trading in or giving your phone away.

Before starting the reset process, you must prepare your phone following the steps listed above. Then, you can begin following these steps to return your iPhone to its factory settings properly.

1. Go to Settings

The first step is going into your device’s Settings. From the main Settings page, you will scroll down and choose General. At the bottom of the General section, there will be options to Transfer or Reset iPhone or Shut Down.

2. Choose Transfer or Reset iPhone

By choosing Transfer or Reset iPhone, you will come to a screen with three options, including the following:

Prepare for New iPhone

Reset

Erase All Content and Settings

3. Erase All Content and Settings

Finally, you will completely clear your device and return it to its factory settings by choosing Erase All Content and Settings. At this point, you will see two new options to either set up the phone as new or restore it using a backup from iCloud.

Your device is fully back to its original settings and can be traded or used as a new device.

There are many reasons you might be interested in blocking a number on an iPhone. Whether you want to stop incessant telemarketers or have other privacy concerns, knowing how to block is a useful tool for keeping your personal information secure and preventing unnecessary notifications.

iPhone users should take advantage of the blocking feature on their devices to reduce the amount of unwanted contact with their number. Beyond preventing calls, it is important to know how to block someone on an iPhone through FaceTime and Messages as well.

How to Block a Number From Contacting You on an iPhone

Through blocking a number, you can prevent that particular number from contacting your device via the following:

Phone calls: When the blocked contact tries to call your number, the device will direct their call to voicemail, but you will not receive any notifications.

FaceTime calls: FaceTime calls from blocked numbers will not register on your device.

Messages: Messages from blocked callers will never be delivered to your iPhone and will not appear on your device.

Between spam calls and robocalls, Americans received more than 51 billion nuisance calls in 2021. The following are step-by-step instructions for stopping unwelcomed contact from the three main communication applications on your device.

How to Block Phone Calls

Block a phone number on your iPhone with these steps:

Open the phone app: Open your home screen. From here, select the Phone app.

Find the caller’s name or phone number: When you have your recent call log in front of you, find the caller’s name or number that you wish to block. After locating it, carefully take the next step to avoid accidentally initiating a call with the number.

Click the “i” icon: Next to the call in the log, you will find an “i” icon indicating more information. By clicking the “i,” you come to a screen with that contact’s details on it. Scroll to the very bottom of the page.

Choose “Block this Caller”: The final option on this screen is “Block this Caller.” When you tap this button, a small pop-up will appear on the bottom of your screen.

Confirm: Once you select “Block this Caller,” the pop-up will read, “You will not receive phone calls, messages, or FaceTime from people on the block list.” Confirm that you want to block the number by hitting “Block Contact.”

Once you’ve followed these steps, this specific phone number will be unable to reach your device unless you make changes to your blocked list. The same user could still contact you through a different number or alternative communication method.

How to Block FaceTime Calls

Prevent unwanted FaceTime calls with these steps:

Open the FaceTime app: If you wish to block a number that keeps calling you on FaceTime, start by opening the FaceTime app on your home screen or app library. When you launch the app, you will see a list of your most recent calls.

Locate the call: Locate the call from the number of the person you wish to block. Again, carefully sort through this log, so you do not accidentally call the unwanted contact.

Find the “i” icon or contact details: When you find the call on your log, click the “i” icon on the right. The “i” icon will take you to a screen with the contact’s information on it. Scroll to the very bottom of the page.

Choose “Block this Caller”: The last option on this screen will say “Block this Caller.” When you click this button, your device will ask you to confirm the action with a small pop-up on the bottom of your screen.

Confirm: The pop-up will once again notify you that “You will not receive phone calls, messages, or FaceTime from people on the block list.” Once you confirm by hitting the red “Block Contact” button, the number will be unable to reach you through FaceTime on your device.

How to Manage Blocked Contacts

Once you’ve successfully blocked a number, you can access the blocked list through your iPhone Settings. Take the following steps to manage your blocked contacts:

Find Settings on the iPhone home screen: Open your iPhone to the home screen. Locate Settings and click on it.

Select the Phone app: When you open Settings, scroll down until you see the Phone app. Select this option.

Choose “Blocked Contacts”: On the Phone screen, you will see multiple buttons and options. Scroll until you see “Blocked Contacts.”

Manage blocked contacts: On the “Blocked Contacts” page, you will see every number you’ve blocked from reaching your device. You can click each number for more details on the caller. If you want to unblock a specific number, choose “Edit” in the top corner and select the red circle beside the contact. This will give you the option to unblock the number.

Current trends predict that more than half of smartphone users will use in-store mobile payment apps by 2025. Apple Pay alone has grown from 67 million users in 2016 to 507 million in 2020.

A growing need for contactless checkout options and the continued popularity of wearable smart technology have cleared a path for Apple Pay and similar applications to thrive in today’s market.

What Is Apple Pay?

Apple debuted its hands-free, easy-to-use payment app at the 2014 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. A groundbreaking development at the time of its debut, Apple’s announcement was met with enthusiasm from smartphone users and trend chasers worldwide.

Apple Pay lets users forgo traditional payment methods by transitioning to a digital wallet available through the user’s iPhone and other Apple devices or online accounts with Apple login information.

Apple Pay users are alerted via a slight vibration, subtle beep or completion screen, depending on the device used when a payment processes. Built-in security features and biometric authentication measures already in place on the device, like Face ID or Touch ID, protect the user’s sensitive information.

Benefits of Apple Pay

This payment app has several benefits for users across devices, including:

Contactless payment: It lets you pay directly from your smartphone or Apple Watch, meaning reduced contact with dirty checkout terminals, cash and credit cards. Clean hands are healthy hands.

No fees: There is no additional processing or usage fee when you use it, regardless of the device you’re accessing your digital wallet from.

Security and privacy: Unlike physical credit and debit cards, which can easily be lost, stolen or broken, this is completely digital and protected by your device’s biometric login, passcodes and more. Retailers and online merchants never have access to your payment information, and your device won’t store your card numbers. The only information transferred is the data necessary to complete your transaction — that’s it.

Person-to-person payments: You can use it to send money to other people through the Messenger app. Connect your debit card information to your Apple devices, set up the person-to-person transfer and easily split restaurant bills or make other transactions between family and friends.

Quick transactions: Instead of manually entering your login information and card data at each online retailer or app purchase, it offers a faster alternative to save you time.

How to Set Up and Use Apple Pay on Your Device

Here’s how to use Apple Pay through your iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac or online Apple account:

Use the Wallet app: Apple Pay is already on your device — no need to download any additional or third-party apps. Find your device’s Wallet app and sign in with your Apple ID.

Add your card: Once you’re in the Wallet app, you can securely add one or more of your credit or debit cards while still receiving all of your card’s built-in rewards and benefits, like cashback percentages or travel miles. You can add several cards and select one as your default payment option through Apple Pay. If you want to change your default card, you can do so at any time.

Set up Apple Cash: Open Wallet & Apple Pay in your iPhone settings and turn on Apple Cash, then tap “Apple Cash” under “Payment Cards.” Once you have this set up, you can send and receive money through the Messenger app.

Use security measures: Enable all of your device’s built-in security features, including biometric logins like Face ID and Touch ID, as well as passcodes and Find My iPhone.

If you can’t find or access Apple Pay on your device, check your device’s age. It’s available on iPhones with Face ID or Touch ID, excluding the iPhone 5S. Any iPad model, including iPad Minis, should have Apple Pay as long as they have those same biometric features. Apple Pay is available on all Series 1 and later Apple Watches and most Mac models released in or after 2012.

Using Apple Pay In-Person

More than 85% of U.S. retailers accept Apple Pay for in-store payments. You can also load your store loyalty cards in your iPhone wallet, along with transit cards, boarding passes and tickets for movies or events.

The Apple Watch and iPhone are two common methods of checkout:

Using Apple Pay on an Apple Watch: Hold your Apple Watch near the checkout terminal card reader. Your Watch’s display should be facing the terminal. Double click the side button to turn your Watch on. Your Watch will prompt you to choose the card you want to pay with, and your Watch will issue a small beep and slight physical movement when the transaction is successful.

Using Apple Pay on an iPhone: Unlock your iPhone with Touch ID, Face ID or your passcode. Hold the device near the contactless terminal at the checkout counter, then select which card you would like to authenticate and use. A checkmark and the word “Done” will appear on your phone screen when the transaction is complete.

Using Apple Pay In-App and Online

Apple Pay is available across millions of websites and apps. You can easily pay for online shopping purchases when browsing via Safari on any of your Apple devices, including your Apple Watch, iPad and Mac. Depending on the device and retailer, you may be able to initiate Apple Pay with a quick tap or scan instead of entering checkout information manually each time.

Since Apple Pay is already integrated on your device, you can also use it to pay for and subscribe to Apple services on your iPhone, including iCloud storage upgrades, app purchases and more.

A slow iPhone can interrupt productivity, complicate conversations and be an overall hassle to deal with. It’s not just a problem for old or outdated devices, either — even new models are at risk for occasional performance problems. Learn the most common causes for lagging iPhones, how to fix them and how to know when it might be time for a new smartphone.

How to Speed Up a Slow iPhone

Apps, space shortages, a crowded cache and outdated operating systems or settings are common culprits that could be making your iPhone so slow and laggy.

1. Manage Apps

Some ways to manage your apps for a faster phone include:

Closing when finished: The more apps you have open at once, the less processing power your device has to dedicate to each one. If you don’t close out of one app before switching to another, it may remain on, slowing down the phone and zapping your battery life. Double click the home button to find and close those apps, then swipe up on each app that you’re not using. The app may take longer to start the next time you try to open it.

Deleting and reinstalling: If most of your problems seem to be centered around a single app, try deleting and reinstalling it. Deleting an app varies across versions but involves either long-pressing the app icon on your home screen and selecting “Delete” or tapping the small X or minus icon that appears to remove it. Some apps, like Mail, Calculator and Calendar, can’t be deleted. Reinstall and restore an iPhone app by restarting your phone, then redownloading it from the App Store. You can also uninstall and reinstall an app on your computer with iTunes.

Updating frequently: Apps need to be updated automatically or manually each time you update your operating system or any time the app developer releases a patch. Enable automatic app updates through your App Store Settings or manually update individual apps by tapping “Update” next to it in the App Store.

2. Make More Space

Smartphones often start acting sluggishly when they’re at or near their storage limit. Check what type of data — such as apps, photos or messages — are consuming most of your space with these steps:

Tap “Settings.”

Select “General.”

Tap “[your device] Storage.”

Wait for the color-coded bar to finish generating and see which categories take up the most space on your phone.

You can then enter those specific categories and start erasing unnecessary files. For example, if Apps are taking up the most space on your iPhone, you can go to “Settings,” “Storage” and “Manage Storage” to see which unwanted apps are dragging you down. In some cases, the app’s data is taking up more space than the app itself.

Keep in mind that it takes at least 6GB of free space to update your operating system and about 2GB of free space to take new pictures, download new apps and use your phone fully. Always delete apps and files you no longer use or move them over to iCloud or your computer to keep space free in your iPhone. iPhones running on iOS 11 and later will give you personalized space-saving tips when you go to “Recommendations” in “General Settings.”

3. Clear the Cache

If your iPhone is particularly slow when surfing the internet, it can help to clear your cache. If the cache gets too crowded or corrupted, it can negatively impact your device. Clearing your browser cache eliminates these temporary files, images and passwords from previously browsed sites.

4. Update the Operating System

If you’re using an older operating system, updating to the latest version can help make your iPhone faster and keep it more secure. Start by backing your phone up to iCloud, a Google account, a third-party app or an external storage device, since updating the system can sometimes mess with certain files.

You can update the operating system directly from your iPhone or by connecting it to a computer. If connecting your device to your computer, open Finder or iTunes, plug your phone in, locate it and download and update any available updates.

Follow these steps when updating from your iPhone without a computer:

Connect to the Wi-Fi and stay connected throughout the download.

Tap “Settings.”

Go to “General.”

Select “Software Update.”

If an update is available, press it and select “Download and Install.”

Updating your operating system may require restarting your phone to take full effect. You might see some changes in appearance and usability.

5. Reset and Update the Settings

You can reset all of your iPhone settings back to their defaults by following these steps:

Tap “Settings.”

Click “General.”

Tap “Reset.”

Select “Reset All Settings” or “Erase All Content and Settings.”

Enter your passcode if prompted.

Please note, this will erase all your content and existing settings, as if your iPhone is brand new again. You’ll have to reenter things like your Wi-Fi password and reconnect Bluetooth accessories. To boost overall performance and speed, you can also erase specific settings in the same “Settings” menu, like Privacy and Location Services.

6. Restart the Device

Restarting your phone clears any apps still open in the background and may help prevent crashing or lag. You should restart your phone regularly or any time you notice a change in performance. Juse press the sleep/wake button until the slider appears and turns red, slide it to power the phone down then press the same sleep/wake button to restart the device.

iPhone Still Running Slow? It Might Be Time for an Upgrade!

If you’ve tried all the methods listed above and are still struggling with a slow iPhone, it might be time to invest in a new one. Slow processing speed is one of the most common reasons people choose to upgrade to a new smartphone. Other common reasons include your battery dying faster than it used to, your iPhone no longer holding charge or simply wanting to try a new model with better cameras, features or design.

Shop Affordable iPhones at Gazelle

Smartphones hold a lot of data, like pictures, music, contact information, apps and browsing history. Over time, this data builds up and can cause performance to break down, getting slower and increasing the time it takes to load web pages or apps. Fortunately, you can try several things to boost your iPhone’s speed and improve overall performance, like clearing your cache, updating to the latest operating system and freeing storage space.

If none of these methods work and it’s time to shop for a new iPhone, Gazelle can help! All our certified refurbished smartphones are available without a contract and are compatible with all major carriers. The latest version is the Series 7, but the Apple Watch SE is a more cost-effective choice that lacks some of the 7’s bells and whistles.

Samsung Galaxy Watches: The Galaxy Watch 4 is slightly more affordable than either Apple Watch but best suited to Android users. With black, silver and pink-gold colors and a range of bands, Galaxy Watches can be a stylish option with features like sleep tracking, ECG monitoring and much more.

Fitbits: Fitbit is another well-known player in the activity-tracking game. They offer large-faced smartwatch styles and sleeker, fashion-forward versions. Their battery lives tend to be much longer than other brands, with many lasting five or more days. If you’re not looking for anything too flashy, this is the most affordable option on the list.

If you have a smartwatch, getting one for your partner can help you link up more often. For instance, with the Apple Watch, you can hold your fingers to the screen and send your partner a snippet of your heartbeat or a hand-drawn smiley face to let them know you’re thinking of them.

2. Instant Cameras and Other Cameras

Does your partner like printed photos or photography in general? Instant cameras have made quite the comeback and are a creative way to add a little something special to your photos. Another option is photo printers, which offer easy, high-quality prints in just a few seconds. The biggest brands for both are Polaroid and Fujifilm. Both cameras and printers can be a great Valentine’s gift under $100, but you can also spend a little more.

Polaroid has stayed in the game for decades and brings us the Polaroid Now+ and the Polaroid Go, instant cameras that bring vintage vibes to your photos. These cameras print on Polaroid’s characteristic white-margined film and have modern features like Bluetooth connectivity and new shooting modes. Polaroid also offers instant “pocket” printers with the classic film style or more modern, borderless prints.

Fujifilm’s Instax lineup includes an array of mini cameras for quick, instant-gratification photography. They have various styles, so you can get your partner a vibrant flamingo-pink camera or something a bit more subdued. Fujifilm also offers printers and film with fun patterns.

Another popular photography gift is a drone for aerial footage, like the DJI Mini 2. If you need a Valentine’s Day tech gift for him, action cams, like GoPros, are also fun for outdoorsy types.

3. Smart Small Appliances

Smart appliances make excellent gifts. You can make your partner’s life a little easier when it comes to cleaning, cooking or making their morning coffee.

Robot vacuums: If vacuuming is the bane of their existence, consider a robot vacuum, like an iRobot Roomba or a Samsung POWERbot. These high-tech vacuums can map the layout and rove around the house to pick up hair and debris on bare and carpeted floors.

Blenders, air fryers, crockpots, etc.: Buying for a foodie? Try a capable cooking gadget, like an Instant Pot, a quality blender or one of many mini appliances from Dash, such as an egg cooker, waffle maker or popcorn popper.

Coffee tools: Up their java game with a fancy new coffee or espresso maker. Other coffee-related Valentine’s Day gadgets include coffee grinders, weighing scales and even the smart mug, Ember, that keeps their drink at a steady temperature.

4. Mini Trackers

Is your significant other constantly losing their keys, digging for the remote or wondering where they put their bag? Trackers are a fantastic, low-cost Valentine’s Day tech gift. The two heavyweights in this category are Apple and Tile. If you lose an item, these trackers emit a loud signal to help you find it. Plus, if you lose your phone, the trackers can make it ring, even if you have it on silent.

Tile offers a wide range of styles and patterns, with trackers that attach to keychains, adhere to surfaces or slip into a card slot in a wallet. A “hot-or-cold” indicator tells you when you get closer to an item as you’re tracking it. You can also set up Smart Alerts and use the power of other Tile users to search for a lost item.

Another option is the AirTag, a lightweight circular tracker you can attach to your items. AirTags don’t have a built-in keychain hole, so you may want to include a colorful holder for ease of use and personalized flair. Apple’s Precision Finding points you toward your item, and, similar to Tile, the FindMy network leverages the massive number of Apple users to track down AirTags outside your phone’s range.

5. Beauty Tools

A beauty tool makes an excellent Valentine’s Day tech gift for her. A hairdryer or straightener can be a welcome gift, but you could also go to the next level with gifts like these.

The Dyson Supersonic: While $400 might sound like overkill for a hairdryer, many people rave about the Dyson Supersonic. It has high-tech performance, a range of unique accessories and clever design features like a bottom-handle vent and extensive temperature monitoring. If your partner hates styling their hair because it takes too long or is hard to manage, this gift could be their new favorite addition to their vanity.

The Dyson Airwrap: Here’s a similar piece of tech from Dyson. The Airwrap is also pricey but boasts similar performance for various styling goals, like curling, smoothing and drying.

Facial cleansers: If your partner is serious about their skin care routine, a sonic cleanser can give them a satisfying deep clean and clear clogged pores.

6. Headphones and Portable Speakers

Whether your loved one needs to stay motivated during workouts, has frequent videoconferences or loves rocking out to their favorite tunes, everyone needs a reliable pair of headphones. There are many different styles, including over-the-ear, in-ear and wired or wireless styles. You’ll find options to fit any budget, but popular brands include Bose, Apple/Beats, Sony, Samsung and Anker.

Some features to consider include:

Noise-canceling and transparency mode

Long-lasting batteries for wireless models

Sweat resistance for active use

Comfort

Compatibility with your partner’s phone

Another memorable Valentine’s Day tech gift is a portable speaker. Audiophiles and casual listeners alike can enjoy outstanding sound quality from a powerful Bluetooth speaker. These speakers are ideal for on-the-go use, with many offering rugged designs, waterproofing and long batteries. Some well-known portable speaker brands include JBL, Ultimate Ears, Sonos, Anker and Bose.

If you get a speaker, have a romantic playlist on hand to show your partner what their new gift can do.

7. Turntables

Vinyl records have been gaining traction for decades, and they even overtook CD sales in 2021 — the first time they’ve done so since 1991. For the retro lover or vinyl collector in your life, turntables are a fantastic Valentine’s Day gift idea. They’re a stylish centerpiece offering more experiential listening and a “warm” tone many people love. You’ll get bonus points if you pair the turntable with a romantic record for the holiday.

You can spend a lot on a high-end record player, but for those just entering the world of vinyl, there are plenty of low-cost options, too. Sony, Crosley and Audio-Technica have some quality entry-level models, while brands like Rega and Pro-Ject have higher-end options.

8. Smart Lights

Does your techie like to customize their space? Smart lights can take the form of lightbulbs, rope lights, adhesive light strips and many other unique shapes. Smart lights typically allow you to control the lights from an app and tap into a full rainbow of colors. You might be able to create schedules, control the lights with voice assistants and create presets — ideal for planning a romantic lighting scheme over your Valentine’s Day dinner.

You’ll find many smart light makers on the market, but some popular ones include Phillips, Wyze, Lifx, Sengled and Nanoleaf.

9. Smart Speakers

If you don’t already have smart assistants in your home, they make excellent Valentine’s Day tech gifts. The leading voice assistants are Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant. Their creators — Apple, Amazon and Google, respectively — have created speakers so you can interact with the assistants, but you can also find them integrated into other devices. For instance, audio giants like Sonos and Bose have created high-quality speakers with these assistants built in.

You can find entry-level smart speakers, like early-generation Echo Dots and the Nest Mini, for under $50, but upgrades are also available with larger speakers and upgraded tech. Apple’s only speaker currently available is the HomePod mini, but many other brands offer support for Siri.

10. Health and Fitness Tech

We’ve already talked about smartwatches, sporty earbuds and smoothie-ready blenders, but there are many other techy gifts for the fitness enthusiast in your life.

Theragun devices: These percussive devices offer deep muscle treatment — essentially, a smart high-speed massager designed for muscle recovery according to your body’s needs.

Smart scale: Smart scales can keep track of weight readings over time to help measure progress. Some can even estimate metrics like muscle mass, body mass index, heart rate and basal metabolic rate. They’ll keep everything synced up to an app via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and can even link with fitness trackers. You can find smart scales from brands like Fitbit, Garmin and Withings.

Smart jump rope: It’s easy to lose count while jumping — smart jump ropes can track your jumps and even help you learn new tricks or even go cordless.

11. Tablets and E-Readers

Tablets are practical, multipurpose devices you can use for watching videos, gaming, drawing, reading and taking notes. While many people love a larger tablet screen, students, artists and readers especially seem to like its capabilities. These users can draw directly on the screen via sensitive styluses, take notes digitally and store all of their books in one small device.

You have many options when shopping for tablets, including the following.

iPads: iPads come in a few different styles, including the standard iPad, the compact iPad mini, the lightweight iPad Air and the high-powered iPad Pro. Apple lovers enjoy their high-quality displays, reliable performance and the sensitivity of the Apple Pencil.

Amazon Fires: If you’re looking for affordability, Amazon’s Fire tablets are some of the lowest-cost tablets available, with several models available for less than $50. They aren’t the most powerful gadgets, but they’ll still let your partner enjoy all the basics.

Samsung Galaxy Tabs: Samsung Galaxy tablets come in a wide range of styles and configurations. They offer excellent performance, and with so many options, you can find the ideal fit for your Valentine’s Day gift.

If you need a Valentine’s Day gift for a bookworm who doesn’t like the idea of a full-blown tablet, consider an e-reader. Unlike tablets, they generally don’t have a full-color display, opting instead for a gentler e-ink display. Since they’re solely for reading, they may not support other activities or apps.

Amazon is the top player here, with Kindles taking up 72% of the market share. Variations between models aren’t too drastic, with higher-priced options including features like automatic light adjustments, cellular connection, more storage, waterproofing and larger displays. The top tier, the Oasis, notably adds one-handed reading with page-turn buttons.

12. Phones

If your significant other has been using a cracked phone for the last three years, it might be time to help them upgrade. There’s a massive range of phones available, so it helps to know what your gift recipient likes before you buy. Still, it’s hard to go wrong with a phone from a flagship lineup like iPhone, Galaxy S or Google Pixel. While shopping, consider their tastes, what kind of features they’re likely to use and the seller’s reliability.

Live Photos are one of the most exciting new features Apple has introduced to iPhones in the past decade. Around since the iPhone 6S release in 2015, Live Photos are small, 1.5-second videos composed of regular pictures taken with your standard iOS camera. When Live Photo is enabled, you can long-press any photo in your album to see the “live” version. You can turn Live Photos into a variety of shareable media — but what happens when the perfect shot is part of a full video, instead? Fortunately, you’ve got options.

This article shows you how to make a video a Live Photo using a third-party app and offers some additional tips for using the Live Photo feature.

Why Convert a Video Into a Live Photo?

You might choose to convert a clip of your video into a Live Photo for several reasons, including:

Customize your device: One popular reason people turn video clips into Live Photos is to use them as a moving wallpaper or lock screen photo. To do this, open your Photos app, select the Live Photo you want to use, select “Share,” then choose whether you’d like to use it as a wallpaper, lock screen image or both.

Upload to social media: Uploading a Live Photo to your social media account is one way to stand out from others in your feed and share a special moment with your friends and family that wouldn’t be the same in a still photo alone.

Share with contacts: Share Live Photos with your contacts through iMessage, AirDrop or iCloud photo sharing — just make sure your recipient has an iPhone with iOS 9 or higher!

Capture specific scenes: Live Photos are often the perfect — and only — way to capture specific scenes, like rolling waves, crashing waterfalls, buzzing bees or a baby’s first smile. By capturing a few seconds of smooth footage, you can share the moment with others or use it as a special way to remember the day.

Create new media: You can transform Live Photos into other types of creative media, like long exposure shots or GIFs. You can use a third-party app to do this or click on the Live Photo you want to use inside your album and visit the Animation options to explore more.

How to Turn a Video Into a Live Photo

You’ll need to download a third-party app from the App Store before you can start turning your favorite video clips into moving Live Photos. We recommend using intoLive, LP or TurnLive, but there are several options available depending on how you want to edit your Live Photo or what iOS version you’re operating on. Other popular options on the App Store are Video to Live Photo Wallpapers and VideoToLive – Live Photo Maker. Always double-check that all apps you download from the App Store are made by a legitimate third-party and read user reviews before making any purchases.

intoLive — Live Wallpapers

intoLive is a third-party app that lets you transform media into “living” wallpapers. It’s free on the App Store with in-app purchase options. intoLive lets you edit Live Photos, choose unique layout styles, create custom GIFs or Burst effects, add a background color and more. You can choose from editing an existing Live Photo or using the app’s supported camera mode.

Follow these steps to use intoLive to transform your video clip into a Live Photo:

Search “intoLive” on the App Store and wait for the app to finish downloading before launching it.

Give the app permission to access your Photos when prompted.

Navigate to your albums and select the video file you want to convert into a Live Photo.

Tap “Edit.”

Select “Make.”

You can now add additional effects to your Live Photo, like making it repeat or altering color options.

Once you’ve finished adjusting your Live Photo, hit “Save Live Photos.”

Close the app and check your Photos album for your new image.

LP — Live Image to Video and GIF

LP is another free third-party app with optional in-app purchases for access to additional features. It lets you export Live Photos to GIFs, create larger video files or pull still images from your favorite moving picture. You can also customize your Live Photo with special settings and edits, including size adjustments for social media.

Follow on-screen prompts to use the LP conversion app to turn a video into a Live Photo. Once you’re finished, you can choose to export the entire Live Photo, a single frame from the Live Photo or batch export multiple Live Photos to the same location.

TurnLive — Live Wallpaper Maker

TurnLive lets you create live wallpapers or moving image files out of videos, GIFs, panorama photos and slideshows. You can create your own or let the app make suggestions and generate a moving wallpaper for you. The app is currently free with in-app purchases and the option to try a seven-day trial of TurnLive Premium.

TurnLive Live Wallpaper Maker is available for the following iPhone models:

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max

iPhone X

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus

It’s also available on Android’s Google Play Store. This version lets you import photos and videos from your PC to the TurnLive app to edit and add motion features.

Pulling a Still Photo From a Live Photo

Follow these steps if you want to turn your favorite Live Photo into a still photo frame for your social media, wallpaper or even to print:

Open your Photos app and find your saved Live Photos.

Choose the Live Photo you want to pull a still image from.

Tap “Share.”

Select “Duplicate,” then “Duplicate as Still Photo.”

A duplicate version of the image will appear in the same album next to the original Live Photo, but this one won’t be moving. You can repeat this process with as many parts of a Live Photo as you want.

Smartphone passwords are a critical part of protecting your private information and keeping data secure, but what happens if you forget yours? Getting locked out of your device is inconvenient, but this security feature helps prevent unauthorized access.

If you’ve lost your iPhone passcode, there are a few methods you can use to restore your device and create a new password.

About iPhone Passcodes

Your iPhone passcode is a six-digit password that you use to unlock your device. Set your passcode on the iPhone X and later devices by going to settings, then “Face ID & Passcode.” On earlier phones, navigate to “Touch ID & Passcode” or just “Passcode,” depending on the model.

You must enter the correct passcode each time you:

Turn your device on.

Restart your iPhone.

Haven’t unlocked your device in 48 hours.

Haven’t used Face ID or Touch ID in four hours.

Attempt to use the Emergency or Medical ID features.

Initiate a remote lock command after misplacing your device.

Have five unsuccessful attempts to unlock your device with Face ID or Touch ID.

You cannot disable your passcode if you use Touch ID or Apple Pay since this would leave critical information vulnerable to unwanted access. If you have 10 failed passcode attempts in a row, you will get a message from your phone that says your device has been disabled. You’ll either need to wait a specific amount of time to try again or, if you’ve still had too many failed attempts, you’ll have to retrieve your password by restoring your iPhone. Avoid entering the wrong passcode by typing it slowly each time to minimize the chance for typos.

Your Options If You’ve Forgotten Your Passcode

If you forgot your iPhone passcode, there is no way to retrieve it without restoring your device. The most important thing you can do to minimize data loss and keep your phone safe from the ramifications of a forgotten passcode is to back it up regularly. Should you have to restore your phone after losing your password, the more recent and frequent your backups, the less likely you will lose data, like pictures, apps and notes.

iTunes Backup Recovery

If you regularly backup your iPhone with a linked iTunes account, recovering your device is simple. Though specifics may vary depending on your phone type and model — more on that later — the general process looks like this:

Put your iPhone into Recovery Mode.

Use a lightning cable to connect your iPhone to a computer with iTunes downloaded.

Open iTunes or Finder, log in and wait for your computer to recognize your device.

Click the iPhone icon on the summary screen.

Select “Restore Backup Option.”

Select the backup date or file you want to restore.

Enter your Apple ID information — make sure it’s the same information linked with your iPhone.

Depending on how many files, songs, images, and other data are in the backup, the process may take several minutes or longer. Make sure you double-check all important settings on your phone after the restoration and set them to your preferences.

iCloud and Find My iPhone

You can use iCloud and the Find My iPhone feature to reset your iPhone. Here’s how:

Log in to iCloud with the same Apple ID account information linked with your phone.

Click “Find My iPhone” and locate your device on the map.

Select the right location, then tap the “Erase iPhone” button.

Read and accept the warning that appears on the screen.

This will reset your phone to factory reset settings, but if you use iCloud to back your device up regularly, your last backup should be recent enough not to cause any significant inconvenience. You can also use the iTunes method above to restore a recent backup if you use your computer instead of the cloud.

Recovery Mode

Entering Recovery Mode varies depending on your specific device, but regardless of the method you use to access it, it’s one failsafe recovery method that lets you troubleshoot your device or restore a backup version. You can also use this method to access and repair your device if it’s too damaged to use on its own. Your phone will automatically exit Recovery Mode when it restarts.

What to Do If You’ve Forgotten Your iPhone Password

Entering Recovery Mode looks different for older and more recent devices.

iPhone X, iPhone SE 2020, iPhone 8 and Later

Follow these steps if you own a more recent iPhone and need to enter Recovery Mode:

Touch and hold the side button and either the up or down volume buttons simultaneously until the power off slider appears on the screen.

Slide the power off button to turn the iPhone off.

Once your device is off, connect it to a computer while pressing down the side button.

Wait for the Recovery Mode screen to appear, then proceed.

Restore a backup version of your phone from iTunes or iCloud, if applicable.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

The process for entering Recovery Mode on an iPhone 7 and its variations is a little different:

Touch and hold the side button until you see the power off slider on the screen.

Slide the button to power the phone down.

Connect your phone to a computer while simultaneously pressing and holding the volume down button.

Wait for the Recovery Mode screen to appear, then proceed.

Restore a backup version of your phone from iTunes or iCloud, if applicable.

iPhone SE, iPhone 6s and Earlier

Earlier iPhones, including the original iPhone SE and the iPhone 6s, involve using the physical home button:

Touch and hold the side button or top button, depending on your device, and don’t let go until the power slider appears.

Turn the phone off by sliding the power bar.

Connect your iPhone to the computer while pressing the home button.

Wait for the Recovery Mode screen to appear, then proceed.

Restore a backup version of your phone from iTunes or iCloud, if applicable.

Restoring Your Device After Recovery

If you forgot your iPhone passcode and don’t want to erase important data to reset it, it’s essential that you back your device up regularly. Once you’ve recovered your device from a backup, you can restore it by following these steps:

With your iPhone still connected to the computer, locate your iPhone using Finder or iTunes.

Press the “Restore” button and wait for the download to complete.

Your iPhone will automatically exit when finished.

Set up your iPhone and confirm all settings when complete — you may need to redownload some apps.

Retailers, Service Providers and Apple Support Can Help

If you don’t have a computer to help you enter Recovery Mode or successfully restore your device, an Apple retailer or authorized service provider might be able to help. Speak with a representative and let them know what you’re trying to do — they may ask a few questions or request you visit in person to complete the recovery process. If your phone is damaged and you can’t access it to restore or enter a passcode, contact Apple Support.

Tips for Choosing a Choosing and Managing Your Passcode

Manage your passcode with these tips:

Choose a complex passcode: The more complex your passcode, the harder it will be for hackers or unauthorized personnel to unlock. Your iPhone comes with the option between a four-digit numeric code, a custom numeric code, a custom alphanumeric code and a six-digit passcode. The longer and more complicated, the better.

Use the Allow Access feature: The “Allow Access” feature lets you choose which information is visible on your screen while your device is locked, such as the notification center, Siri, the reply with message feature or the return missed calls feature.

Change your passcode as needed: Apple or your device might send you occasional messages to change your passcode for security reasons, some of which come with a specific timeframe to complete the action. Always abide by these and change your password often, but never click on a link to do so unless you’re sure it’s from an official Apple source.

Require an immediate passcode: When you set up your passcode, you can decide how soon after going idle your phone should require unlocking. Set this to “immediately” to avoid long waits that leave your device vulnerable to unauthorized access.

Use a combination of characters: Create a strong password using a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. Avoid commonly guessed passcodes, like birthdays, anniversaries, phone numbers or your name.

Use two-factor authentication: Use two-factor authentication, like requiring Face ID and a passcode, whenever possible to add an extra layer of security. Some individual apps may also let you set up two-factor authentication, especially if they hold sensitive information, like your bank account.

If you’re like most smartphone users, screenshots are a part of your daily phone use, whether you’re capturing a funny meme, sharing part of an interesting article or saving a conversation for later. Screenshots are a fast, convenient way to save and share information, but it’s not always clear how to take them on a new device. Apple’s screenshot methods have varied over the years with the introduction of Face ID and the phasing out of a physical home button.

How to Take a Screenshot on an iPhone With Face ID

With the release of the iPhone X, iPhone 11 and the recent iPhone 12, Apple did away with the traditional physical home button at the bottom of the device. The change puts more focus on the side button, with the former “home” action now swiping up on your screen. Apple’s latest releases also rely heavily on Face ID, which means taking a screenshot has also changed.

Here’s how it works:

Press and release the side button and the volume up button at the same time.

A small window of the image will appear in the lower-left corner of your screen — tap it if you want to proceed with the screenshot or swipe the image away to dismiss it.

Select “done” when you’re finished or start the process over by exiting the screenshot.

Save the screenshot to your destination of choice, like a specific photo album or file folder.

You can access your screenshot by opening the file or album you saved it to, and it will also be in All Photos if you have iPhotos enabled.

How to Take a Screenshot on iPhones With a Home Button

If you own an iPhone 9 or earlier, you still have a physical power button at the bottom of your device, unlike more recent Apple releases. The home button makes it easy to capture a screenshot on your phone:

Press and release the home button while simultaneously pressing and releasing either the sleep/wake button or the side button, depending on the device you’re using.

Wait for a small image of the screenshot to appear in the lower left corner of your screen, then tap it to proceed. You can also swipe the image away to dismiss it and try again.

Save the screenshot to your chosen photo album or file folder — you can access or edit the screenshot by returning here later.

How to Take a Full Page Screenshot

If you’ve ever tried saving a screenshot of a recipe, conversation, to-do list or web article, you’re likely familiar with the challenge of taking several screenshots, hoping they line up correctly and then trying to find the correct order later on. Fortunately, Apple screenshots make it easier than ever to capture the entire page.

You have two options for full page screenshots — saving it as a PDF or using a stitching app.

1. Save the Page as a PDF

Instead of saving screenshots as individual images, you can save the entire page as a PDF, or Portable Document Format. The PDF will exist as a single file, simplifying sending, editing, organizing and reviewing.

Here’s how you do it:

Open the conversation or page in Safari.

Take a screenshot and tap the image.

Hold down or scroll on the right side of the screen and select “full page tab.”

Tap “done” when the screen captures the image you want.

Save the screenshot as a PDF to your files.

You can also share the PDF through a message or as an email attachment instead of saving it.

2. Use a Third-Party Stitching App

If you don’t want to save a full page as a PDF, you can also use a stitching app. Stitching apps let you take multiple individual screenshots and “stitch” them together to create a single long image that you can send as one file instead of multiple. Some apps have additional features that make the merge even more intelligent, like removing bottom navigation bars and helping you blend overlap.

Tailor, Long Screenshot and Picsew are three popular third-party stitching apps for iOS devices — find them in the App Store.

Tips for Better iPhone Screenshots

A polished screenshot with helpful text and highlights can be a valuable communication tool. Make your screenshots count with these helpful tips:

Crop the image: Crop a screenshot before sending it or saving it to remove any sensitive information or distracting elements, like the notification bar. You can also use the crop feature to help your screenshot fit specific dimensions or file sizes.

Close ads and pop-ups: Chat bubbles, web ads and pop-up email subscription boxes can take away from your screenshot’s focal point. Close all of these before capturing your image and crop out any sidebar advertisements that you can’t dismiss.

Use the Magnifier: Apple has a built-in magnifying feature that lets you zoom in to the page or conversation and select precisely what you’d like to capture — just tap the “plus” (+) button and zoom in or out until your image is in frame.

Mark the image: Customize your screenshot by adding highlights, arrows or text, which is perfect when using the image for a presentation, project or online. You can also download an annotation app from the App Store to get even more advanced features, like text retraction and easier highlighting.

Organize your albums: Instead of keeping all of your screenshots in the same screenshot album, consider making multiple screenshot albums to help you stay more organized. Label them based on the content you typically capture, like “jokes,” “recent articles” or “recipes to try.”

Delete when finished: Delete screenshots after you’re done with them to save space on your device. You can also transfer the file to cloud storage to free up space on your phone without permanently deleting the image.

With Google Android and Apple iOS making up more than 99% of global smartphone shares, the question isn’t which operating system (OS) is better, but which one is better for you. Each OS boasts similar features, and the characteristics that set them apart make them an equally valuable option. Whether you want a device with top-of-the-line security, premium design, affordability or a combination of qualities, there is a smartphone for you somewhere in Android’s and Apple’s vast market of products.

iPhone vs. Android — Factors to Consider

Android vs. iPhone — how do you choose? Both operating systems are continually evolving with each new update, and either will likely meet any casual phone user’s needs. Consider the following characteristics to understand better what you value in a device and which OS you should be shopping for.

Ease of Use

Android’s customizable interface and iOS’s simplicity are both easy to use and adapt to when switching brands, but they do have some key differences:

Digital assistants: Apple’s Siri and Google’s Google Assistant are both helpful for answering basic questions and helping you start your day with an overview of the weather and to-do lists, but they aren’t entirely equal. Siri was the first to hit the smartphone market and is well-loved as a result, but Google Assistant is currently more integrated with other Google apps, like the Google Calendar.

Apps and services: Every phone comes equipped with certain productivity and usability services, like a GPS navigation app, email, cameras and storage. Consider what you value in these core services. For example, if you store a lot of data or critical files on your phone, storage options may be a top priority, while those who travel often may want specific features in their navigational apps.

Frame type and size: Ease of use also includes how well you can physically handle the phone, factoring in the frame material, the device’s weight and if the height and width fit into your hand for easy one-handed use. Frame material and screen protection will also tell you how durable a device will be against splashes, dust and falls.

Aesthetics

For many, the perfect smartphone must balance durability and ease of use with a sleek, attractive aesthetic. Designs have changed over the years — while shoppers once flocked to stores over compact devices in neutral colors, today’s phones offer larger, flat or curved edge designs in multiple colors, finishes and materials.

iPhone’s devices tend to look more premium across the board and are usually the most expensive as a result. Android offers a wider variety of appearances and sizes. Accessories also play an important part in aesthetics. While they’re readily available for most modern-day devices, it’s typically easier to find Apple cases and accessories than it is with Android since Android covers such a wide berth of manufacturers.

Open vs. Closed System

One of the most notable differences between the two operating systems is Android’s open system and iOS’s closed system. Android’s operations are based on the Android Open Source Project, or AOSP, which lets users use source code to create or mod operating systems. Apple doesn’t have an open-source code, though some elements are less closed than others. So, what does this look like for the average cell phone user?

iOS phones don’t have bloatware like Android and nearly everything is written in the same coding language with advanced chipsets. This allows for a more fluid user experience and control over third-party resources. It also adds to Apple’s clean user aesthetic, minimizing a lot of home page and app clutter.

Android platforms may allow more third-party apps and multiple programming languages, but this makes it far more flexible and customizable than an iOS device. For example, unlike Apple devices, you can permanently change an Android phone’s defaults, like an email client or web browser.

Updates

Operating systems need regular updates to stay current with changing technology, retain app compatibility and patch security concerns. Keeping your devices up to date is also the easiest and most affordable way to stay current on tech evolution without buying a new phone every time a new feature is available.

Apple tends to offer more iOS updates than Google does for Android devices, and they offer updates and security support for devices for longer after launch than Android does.

Security

According to one survey, more than half of today’s cell phone users are worried about identity theft, fraud, stolen passwords, confusion and misinformation over data use, data sales, location tracking and undisclosed data collection online. A phone’s security depends on the apps it allows on its app store, how it handles your online browsing data, what protections are in place against malware and viruses and what third-party security apps are available for download.

Cost

While iOS is available only on Apple devices, you can find Android on a range of manufacturer devices, which gives Android users a larger selection of affordable options to choose from. While it’s often true that you get what you pay for — iPhone’s cameras and premium design set it apart from its competitors — their most affordable option is currently the $399 iPhone SE 2020, while Android has several mid-range models available for far less.

If keeping costs low is your number one priority in a device, consider shopping the certified refurbished smartphone market. At Gazelle, we have some of the most popular releases, including iOS and Android devices, available at lower prices. Each phone has undergone extensive quality checks for appearance and performance, and you never have to sign contracts or pay hidden fees.

Support

Ongoing support is an important part of smartphone ownership, especially if you’re investing a lot of money into a new device. With more than 270 Apple stores across the United States, Apple is a leader in brand-to-consumer support. They also offer AppleCare, a comprehensive service plan, for an additional fee.

AppleCare includes features like:

Extended coverage warranties

Support by phone, chat or app

Repair services

Business and professional support

While many Android manufacturers offer programs similar to AppleCare, you won’t find quite as many retailers nearby, and some devices may not be eligible for a care plan.

An iPhone Might Be Right for You If…

Are iPhones better than Android phones? Many people seem to think so. In addition to the various design options and premium feel that come with Apple smartphones, iOS users praise the vastness of Apple’s device ecosystem, the App Store’s strict security standards and lack of problematic bloatware.

You Already Have Apple Products

Apple users are famously loyal to the brand — they may just be the most loyal consumer base on today’s market. Many believe iPhones are better than Androids because the sheer number of Apple items users can sync activity across. Taking a picture with your iPhone 12? You can easily move it to your Mac for editing. Copying an important address from your Safari browser? You can use Universal Clipboard to paste it to your phone’s GPS.

While many Android devices have similar integration features, it’s not nearly as vast as Apple’s family of iOS-enabled devices.

You Value Security and Privacy

Both operating systems have increasingly innovative and effective security features, but Apple’s closed-source system gives them more control over what’s available on their platform and adds a layer of security against potentially invasive third parties. Much of Google’s business model rests on collecting user data to create more customized browsing experiences, while Apple has little need for the same level of browsing data. Their frequent OS updates mean they can also address any developing concerns more quickly than Android’s slower OS update releases.

Regardless of which operating system you’re using, you should take proactive steps to protect your information, such as:

Being cautious if downloading a third-party app or software to your device.

Downloading malware and antivirus apps.

Clearing data from your device before selling or recycling it.

Enabling features that help you locate misplaced devices.

Regularly clearing unwanted cache, cookies, apps and files from your phone and browser.

You Want All the Apps Without the Bloatware

Apple’s App Store has 4.3 million apps, while Android’s Google Play falls behind with 2.9 million. Of Apple’s 4.3 million apps, many are exclusive to iOS, including user-favorites like Tweetbot, Enlight and Hyperlapse. Apple delivers all of this app value without extensive bloatware — preinstalled apps and software that may slow performance, take up valuable storage space or be unable to be deleted from your device — while Android’s bloatware remains a top complaint among shoppers.

An Android Might Be Right for You If…

Many smartphone users believe Android is better than iPhone because the OS is available on so many different types of phones, including Samsung, OnePlus, Google Pixel, Nokia and ZTE. They also rely on the highly versatile and adaptive USB-C universal charging and data transfer cord instead of Apple’s lightning charger, which is only compatible with other iPhones. This extensive inventory of product manufacturers has helped Android become the top operating system in the world, accounting for nearly 73% of the market.

You Want a Variety of Price Points

As we’ve covered, Android’s biggest asset is the variety of products it powers. Whether you’re shopping on a budget, hoping for a balance between design and performance or want to invest in a top-of-the-line smartphone with all the latest bells and whistles, you’ll have no trouble finding an Android device to fit your lifestyle.

Consider the range of prices for some of 2020’s top sellers, all unused and straight from the box:

Motorola Moto E: $149.99

OnePlus Nord N200 5G: $239.99

Google Pixel 4a: $349.00

Motorola Edge: $699.99

OnePlus 9 5G: $729.00

ASUS ROG Phone 5: $999.99

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G: $799.99 to $1,199.99

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold: $1,799.99

You Want More Customization

Android’s open-source system gives users more options to organize and move apps, create shortcuts and adjust the interface launcher. They can also download third-party replacements, set new defaults for some core services and add fun themes across the system.

The latest example is Google’s Material You, a new custom approach to design that adapts to Android users’ preferences, screen sizes and more. The company plans to launch it with the Android 12 update on Google Pixel devices in late 2021 before expanding to other devices.

You Want More Storage

Google’s cloud storage, including Google Drive, offers a place to create and store documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, which you can easily access from any device linked with the same Google account. Apple’s iCloud is extensive but doesn’t offer as much cross-platform support. For example, you can access your Google Drive on an iPhone, but you can only connect to your iCloud from an iOS device.

Many Android devices — including the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Sony Xperia 1 II and Nokia 7.2 — also have expandable storage options with their smartphones, like microSD slots.
