Senior offensive lineman Cole Bailey (Xenia, IL) was recently profiled in the Clay County Republican. The paper focused on Bailey's unique journey that led him the the Greenville College starting lineup. In the story Bailey talked about his journey,

"As far as college football, it was more like a dream but when I transferred to Greenville it be came a pretty real opportunity.
"My first year there I decided to focus on school but ended up making friends with some guys on the team and decided to go for it."

Bailey also touched on his first conversation with Head Coach Ordell Walker,

"At our first conversation, I was pretty intimidated. Coach Walker’s main goal was to make sure that if I joined that I would be dedicated to the program and not walk away half way through."

Bailey ended the article with his message to anyone interested in playing football at the next level,

"I would most definitely recommend all sports to anyone that is interested. I believe that sports have a quality that connects people in a way that no other organizations or activities could ever do. A bond is built that is unlike any other and it provides a unique way to connect to the school and to the community there."

At the start of the 2011 season the Greenville College Panther football team had the largest roster in the history of the program. The roster was a unique mixture of players from all over the country and all walks of life.

21 states were represented by players this season. From Florida to Hawaii, California to New York, the best players in the country came to Greenville to compete at the highest level.

This is not a new trend as Greenville has always been a haven for talented players who wanted a unique football experience. In the past four years alone Greenville has toted 1st Team All-Conference winners from Illinois, Washington, California, Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, Oregon, Nebraska, and Florida.

The Panthers are searching the country looking for great players and great fits for the program. If you are interested in being a part of EMAP Football or know someone who would email our recruiting coordinator Coach Robbie Schomaker at robbie.schomaker@greenville.edu

Fitness Center Open 24/7

Starting on Monday Febuary 7th the Greenville College Fitness Center (also known as The Annex) will be available for use 24 hours a day 7 days a week for all members. Untill this change the Fitness Center was only open to 9PM on the weekdays, noon on Saturdays and closed on Sundays.

The Fitness Center has also upgraded the check-in proccess. Out are the old sign-in sheets, in are the proxy card scanners.

Now when a student enters the Fitness Center they can simply swipe their student ID. This information is stored and will be valuable in determining the use of the Fitness Center.

After 9PM they will also use their card to gain access to the Fitness Center.

This is only the latest in a string of positive upgrades for the Fitness Center. New racks, new weights, fresh paint, new signs, security cameras, new doors and now the change in hours have all happened within the last year.

Tom Broomfield has been the driving force for all of the positive changes at the Fitness Center. Coach Broomfield is the Fitness Training Center Director and Assistant Track & Field Coach (Head Throws Coach) for Greenville College.

His hard work and dedication has provided a first class facility that no longer has time restrictions for any Greenville College student.

National Signing Day

“National Signing Day” has become quite an event for high school seniors and college football programs. February 1st is the first day high school seniors can sign their National Letter of Intent (NLI) for the NCAA Division I and II University they plan on attending.

Just like many schools Greenville College is in the midst of their recruiting season. Since there is plenty of confusion surrounding signing day and the NLI we thought we would talk with Coach Robbie Schomaker, the Offensive Coordinator and Recruiting Coordinator for the Greenville College Panthers.

Can Greenville College participate in “National Signing Day”?

“No. Just like all NCAA Division III schools Greenville College does not participate in the “National Signing Day”.

How does a recruit commit to Greenville College?

"When a student athlete decides to attend Greenville College and become a member of the football team they commit in the same way a regular student would. There is a housing form every student must fill out and turn in along with a $200 housing deposit that will go towards the fall tuition."

Can you publicize a commitment?

"Absolutely! We know that this is one of the most important decision any one can make. We want to celebrate the decision just like Mizzou and Ohio State do. Players who commit can come to Greenville for a commitment celebration. They will then be profiled on our website."

Hopefully Coach Schomaker has answered any questions about signing day. If you would like more information please contact Coach Schomaker at 618-664-6727 or robbie.schomaker@greenville.edu

Panthers Named to Academic All-UMAC Team

On Tuesday the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) released the individual Academic All-Conference award winners for fall semester.
The resignation was effective immediately.

In a statement sent to the team Schenk said,

"Life is full of transitions and many of you are starting to figure out and I believe God has a plan for us all. With much prayer, thought, advice from family and friends we have made the decision to move closer to family."

In his two seasons as defensive coordinator for the Panthers Schenk coached 10 All-UMAC players including the 2010 UMAC Defensive Player of the Year, Joel Deayon.

Today is the 26th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It is a day when we look back and remember one of the most important leaders during the Civil Rights movement in the 1960's.

As a football program we understand and respect the sacrifices and advances made in those times that allow us the peace and prosperity that we have.

Dr. King was man who was called to stand up in the face of oppression. Dr. King was a courageous leader who loved and feared God. It was his deep faith that allowed him to live a courageous s life.

As a football program we are teaching young men to have this same type of courage. We want them to have the ability to do the right thing no matter how difficult it may seem. We teach them that courage comes from the power of the Holy Spirit that dwells inside us.

The Bible tells us that “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7.

"The non-violent movement of the civil rights struggle illustrated the power of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus taught us to turn the other cheek to violence, to love your enemy and pray for those you persecuted you. Those people lived Jesus message and I benefit from their obedience. I wonder what would happen in this country if followers of Christ would actually do what He says by praying for our enemies in 2012?" –Head Coach Ordell Walker.

Greenville Celebrates MLK

Monday January 16th the Greenville College community will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The college with take a break from regular classes to reflect on the mission of Dr. King. On this the last day of 2011 we wanted to look back and rank our top 5 EMAP memories. It was such a great year we couldn't settle for only 5!

What are your favorite memories of 2011? Let us know on our Facebook fan page.

5a. 2011 NCAA Victory Bowl

For the third time in Greenville College history the Panthers were invited to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Championship game bowl game. The "Victory Bowl" took place in Campbellsville, KY as the Panthers took on the Tigers of Campbellesville University. The bowl included a service project and a banquet. You can see highlights (both good and not so good) here.

5b. Championship Play, Championship Lives Bowl

For the first time in Panthers history the legends of the past suited up again to once again reign terror on Francis Field. On the Friday of Homecoming weekend the JV Panthers took on a team made up of former Panthers. Over 30 Greenville College alumni suited up for the game. The success of this game will ensure a 2012 CPCL Bowl.

4. Senior Day Comeback

With one quarter to play the Panthers faced a 23 point deficit and it seemed that this 2011 Senior Day would end in defeat. Unfortunately for the Northwestern Eagles23 points was not enough to slay the mighty Panthers. Greenville College scored all of their points in the 4th quarter to defeate the Eagles 27-23. The final touchdown was scored by SO RB Immanuel Gamble.

3. Terminator Olympics

The last day of spring practices was a night to remember for the Panthers. A full night of competetion included a P90X workouts, a dance contest, arm wrestling, towel contest and a jog to the Brinier building and back. The Olympiad ended in the early morning with a well earned breakfast. SO LB Cody Lopez took top honors that night but every Panther involved will remember that night.

2. Philly Trip

The 22 players and coaches from the Greenville College Football team left Greenville on Friday March 11th at 4PM ready for a unique spring break experience. The team traveled to Philadelphia, PA for a spring break missions trip. While in Philly the team cleaned a park, ran a football camp, spread the gospel of Jesus and provided some labor for different community projects. It was a memorable trip for everyone who went.

1. The Eureka Game

In the middle of October the Panthers traveled to Eureka, IL to battle UMAC foe Eureka College. The game would be the most memorable of the season.

With seven seconds remaining in the game the Panthers faced a 3rd down on the Eureka seven yard line, down 28-33. It was SO QB Brendan Chambers ) who found SR WR Ryan Boezeman in the end zone for the go ahead score.

The winning drive for the Panthers began 10 plays earlier and 53 yards away from the end zone. Greenville had just watched their 15 point lead vanish after the third 4th quarter Eureka touchdown. The drive included two huge plays; a 21 yard pass from Chambers to SR TE Demontrez Simington on a 3rd and 9 and a 23 yard pass from Chambers to FR WR Trik Scott. After the Boezeman touchdown, Greenville held off a Eureka Hail Mary attempt when SR DB John Smith intercepted the pass as time expired

You can listen to the game LIVE on Saturday here.

This is the second year a Panther has played in the All American Bowl. Last season Anthony Ambers, David Butler and Tim Burroughs represented Greenville College in the bowl game.

The All American Bowl was founded in 1996 to give athletes the opportunity to compete against the best at their level in an all star game setting. The All American Bowl was created to fill the void of the lack of all star games available to athletes in High School, DII, DIII, JUCO, and minor league football.

During the season we will be posting weekly player profiles. Tyson Stakes is going to provide the family, friends, fans, and alumni of the Greenville Panthers a deeper view of some of our players. The final installment looks at senior safeties John Smith (Aurora, IL) and Andy Lozano (Desert Hot Springs, CA).

Tyson Stakes: The season is over now, and you guys are both seniors. How are you feeling about the way the final chapter in your college football career is done?

Andy Lozano: You always want your last game to be the winning game. but at the same time, being on the defense, we just played our best game we played at the Victory Bowl.

John Smith: I think before the game Kiso said to me and Andy, "You know, after the game you should feel we left it all on the field, don't save your energy for anything because this is it." I think that helped us play really hard. Even though we lost, it wasn't the loss that made us feel sad. I think we were sad about not being able to play any more games together, rather than the loss itself.

Andy: I think it's funny because the night before, John and I were in the hotel room. Some freshman asked us how we feel and it hit us then. It's like you don't think about it until it's happening. You look at everyone's faces and you know you're all never going to be in the same place again. Coach Gaylord throwing a football at my head...

John: He threw a football at your head?

Andy: Yeah!

Tyson: That's really tender. (Laughs). So John you're a DM major and Andy, what major are you?

Andy: I'm going to be a double major in Adult Fitness and Biology.

Tyson: That's really cool. What are your plans after you graduate? How are you going to impact the world?

Andy: I'm going back to live my parents for the next 20 years! Just kidding!
(Laughter).

John: I don't really have any jobs set up for as soon as I graduate, but I'm interested in doing videos. Possibly overseas for ministries. This interterm I'm going on a trip to Bolivia to do exactly that. We're going to be doing a video for a ministry called Operation Restoration. They take children off the street, put them homes, feed them, clothe them, educate them and then they present the Gospel to them after all that. So yeah, we're going down there to make a 20 minute video to promote their ministry. And, I think, I'd like to do something along those lines post-college.

Andy: I'm not sure what I want to do but the thing I'm leaning to is going to Logan College of Chiropractic. They offer sports rehab major, and masters programs. Also, in February I'm doing a football camp combine with Ryan Boezeman. I'm not completely done with football and I want to see if I can make it to the next level. I think I'll give it one more chance to see if I can take it farther. I'm also interested in the Navy. There's just so many things. Maybe even a Pokémon Master. (Laughs).

Tyson: I've already been the Pokémon Master for quite some time. (Much laughter). Having been on the football team all four years, and having interacted with the coaches and the players, what has been the main impact of your college career?

Andy: I think the main message of EMAP is: BE A MAN. If there was one thing that the program has taught me it's the fact that your commitment should not be based on the level of glamor of being on the football team.

John: To add onto that, always play hard and practice hard even though you're not going to play in front of 50,000 people, you might only be playing in front of a few hundred.

Tyson: Alright thanks guys. I wish you luck in your various post-collegiate pursuits!

The 2011 season for the Greenville College Panthers (7-4, 7-2 UMAC) ended in defeat Saturday. The Panthers fell in a defensive battle to the Campbellsville University Tigers (7-5, 3-2 MSC) 21-7.

Five turnovers were not enough for the Panthers to be victorious in the 2011 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl. In a reversal of roles, it was the Panther defense that provided the big plays on Saturday.

Interceptions by SR Safety Andy Lozano (Desert Hot Springs, CA) and SO LB Cody Lopez (Bonita, CA) ended potential scoring drives for Campbellsville. The Panthers defense also forced 4 Tiger fumbles recovering 3.

Although it turned into a defense battle, it appeared early that the Victory Bowl would be a Kentucky-style shootout.

The game began with a couple of quick scores by both teams. The Tigers used a trick play to score on the second play from scrimmage. The 58 yard double pass would be the only touchdown the Panther defense would concede all day.

Greenville would not wait long to answer. The ensuing kickoff was returned 86 yards by FR WR Tre' Lewis (Belleville, IL).

That was the end of the "shoot-out".

The next score wouldn't come until 2:34 left in the second quarter. A 52 yard run by SO QB Brendan Chambers (San Clemente, CA) put the Panthers on the Tiger 21 yard line. After a one yard run, Chambers errant pitch was recovered and returned 82 yards for the second Campbellsville score of the day.

The second half scoring began in the third quarter, when a 12 play 73 yard Tiger drive ended with a 19 yard FG, making the score 17-7 in Campbellsville favor.

The Tiger defense scored next, tackling SO RB Bryce Wright (Peoria, AZ) in the end zone for a safety.

The final score came when the Panthers faced a fourth down on their own 2 yard line. Greenville called for the punter to take a knee in the end zone. This prevented the Tigers from making it a three score game.

It was all for not as the Panthers could not muster a Victory Bowl comeback.

Offensively Chambers combined for 121 total yards. SR WR Ryan Boezeman (Demott, IN) Caught 4 passes for 19 yards.

The Panther defense was led by SR LB Kiso Faletufuga (San Diego, CA). The final game of his career was quite possibly his best. Under the bright lights and cold wind of Clark Swisher Field in Aberdeen, SD, the 2011 regular season ended with the Panthers catching the snap and taking an knee. The Greenville College Panthers (7-3, 7-2 UMAC) drove over 14 hours for their seventh victory of the season. The first year Presentation College Saints (3-7, 3-6 UMAC) could not handle the speed and strength of the Panthers falling 41-17.

It was the Panther defense that set the tone for the entire game. The first quarter saw two interceptions and one fumble recovery by the Greenville defense. A SO K Josh Frewin (Payson, AZ) 23 yard FG and a 16 yard JR RB Bobby Hughley (New York, NY) touchdown run gave the Panthers a 10-7 lead after one quarter.

The second quarter saw the Panthers explode offensively. Hughley started the Panther second quarter scoring with a 3 yard touchdown run. SO QB Brendan Chambers (San Clements, CA) followed suit with his own 18 yard touchdown run, his first of the day. The last touchdown of the quarter came from a 79 yard pass from Chambers to SR TE Demontrez Simington. A late Saints field goal gave the Panthers a 31-10 halftime lead.

After a quiet third quarter the Panthers held on to a 31-17 lead. This was until Frewin's 36 yard field goal. The final score came when FR WR Tre' Lewis (Beleville, IL) took the pitch for 31 yards into the end zone.

Hughey finished the game with 27 rushes for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns. Chambers was 9-16 for 126 and a touchdown, while running the ball 9 times for 81 yards and a touchdown.

It was SO LB Tyler Penn (Richmond, IN)who led the Panther defense with 8 tackles and 1 sack.
