Even though it was Agape weekend, we headed out Saturday morning for our SLIAC team [...]

Even though it was Agape weekend, we headed out Saturday morning for our SLIAC team tournament. We were to play against Webster first, if we beat them, then we would have to play the winner or Principia and Westminster. We arrived at Principia around 10:30, expecting to play at 11:30. However due to the speed of the wind we were required to play inside. Then there was a big controversy with the coach from Westminster because he coaches both the girls and guys teams. So we had to wait until the girls were done, before we moved inside and started playing. We finally started at 4:00, and we only had two courts. We were tied after the first two doubles matches. Number won doubles won 9 – 7 after starting down 1 – 4. Then number two doubles lost just moments later. At 1 – 1, we put our number three doubles on and our number one singles. Number three singles fought back from 1 – 4, but lost in the tie breaker 3 – 7. Joe Newlin won his first set against Webster easily, but Augustine fought back in the second to take the first singles match into a third set. Joe would go on to win that set 6 – 3, this evened up the match at 2 a piece. Number two singles, Ian Wolf, would have to play against his Kryptonite. He has never beaten Diego from Webster, but has gone three sets every time. This match was no different in that it went to a third set. However at 2 – 2, Diego started cramping up in his leg. He played on it until 4 – 4, and then it cramped to the point that their coach pulled him from the match. It wasn’t pretty, but we got the win to put us up 3 -2. Taylor Dunnington would fight hard, but lose to Ricky 6 – 7 (2 – 7), 6 – 7 (4 – 7), evening the score at 3 all. At this point, Westminster had just beaten Principia 5 – 1. We now got to use all four courts, and we put the remaining three matches on. Todd Ganton was the first of them to lose at number six singles. He had beaten Fossler (A two time 1st team all conference champion) last week in the Individual tournament, but he was no match today. Todd lost 2 – 6, 0 – 6…. putting the match at 3 – 4. Webster would only need 1 more win to move on to the next round. Jesse Shaw and Ryan Haas were on court and they were both fighting in the third set. Jesse, however, would lose in the third set 4 – 6, ending the match.

“Guys, it’s been a great season, but I guess some things just weren’t ment to be”, said Coach Brett Brannon after the match. It was a disappointing end to our great season. We took 4 of our singles matches to 3 sets, and we only lost by two games in each of our doubles matches. We made Webster earn every point, and we did not give up the whole time. It has been a great season and we will miss our Seniors next year.

This morning we did not think that we would have a match. It has rained [...]

This morning we did not think that we would have a match. It has rained the last 6 or 7 days, and it didn’t look like it was going to clear up before the match. Fortunately for us, the sky cleared up and we were able to see the sun for the first time in a few days and we got ready for our match against Maryville University. A win would be a nice thing to have going into our Conference tournament this coming Saturday. It is also Senior night, we want to congratulate all three of our seniors for four years of hard dedicated work. Thank you, Joe Newlin, Jesse Shaw, and Taylor Dunnington. We started off the day sweeping doubles. Number one doubles completes the regular season winning 8 – 0. Number two doubles, Taylor Dunnington and Ryan Haas, won their match 9 – 7. Number three doubles, Jesse Shaw and Todd Ganton, won 8 – 5. With the momentum in our direction we were able to sweep in singles as well, winning the match 9 – 0. Joe Newlin won at number one singles 6 – 3, 6 – 4. Ian Wolf defeated his opponent 6 – 1, 6 – 1. At number three singles, Taylor Dunnington won his match 6 – 3, 6 – 0. Number four singles, Jesse Shaw, won with no problem at all 6 – 0, 6 – 0. Ryan Haas had a bit of challenge, but still won his match 7 – 6 (7 – 5), 6 – 4. Michael Read (me) won his match 6 – 1, 6 – 4. This moves our regular season record to 11 – 6 (3 – 2 Conference).

Maryville wasn’t a bad team, we just played really well after a well rested Easter break. This helps raise our confidence level going into our Conference tournament this weekend. We are scheduled to play against Webster University, a team that we came very close to defeating in the regular season. If we win that match then we will play the winner of Westminster and Principia. (Hopefully Principia, but more than likely Westminster). If you get a chance come on over to St. Louis and watch us as we try to win the Conference trophy.

Today we traveled east into Indiana to play against the smart boys from Rose-Hulman. [...]

Today we traveled east into Indiana to play against the smart boys from Rose-Hulman. It was about a two hour drive there (plus a time change), and they may have impacted the way we played. We did not come out very strong, barley winning only one of our doubles matchs. Number one doubles, Joe Newlin and Ian Wolf, prove why they are number one in SLIAC. They put Rose-Hulman away winning 8 – 6. Number two doubles had a tough match and ended up losing 0 – 8. Number three doubles also came up short losing 4 – 8. We were going to have to win it in singles, which lately has been our stronger point….. but not today. In fact I don’t really want to talk about what happened. Rose Hulman is a very good team…. but not as good as we made them look. Joe Newlin lost at number one singles 3 – 6, 4 – 6. Ian Wolf lost at number two singles 5 – 7, 4 – 6. Taylor Dunnington lost at number 3 singles, 2 – 6, 0 – 6. Number four singles was played by Jesse Shaw, and was the most promising singles match we had. He took the first set 6 – 4, but would lose the next two sets 4 – 6 (3 – 10). Ryan Haas lost at number five singles 1 – 6, 0 – 6. Michael Read was at number six singles and he lost 2 – 6, 3 – 6.

I guess we are saving our best for the match coming up on Tuesday (4/26) when we play against Maryville University (MO). This will be our last home match of the season, so come on out if you can.

The second day was a rather interesting day. It was raining again, so we had to play indoors at a country club in St. Louis. It was a very fancy place that had 8 indoor courts. When we first arrived we figured we were going to get this tournament done in no time. However, they only reserved three courts for us. This slowed down the match and was going to make for a long day. We had two rounds of doubles left and one round of singles left. We started off with doubles and got the semi-finals out of the way. Joe Newlin and Ian Wolf, the #2 seed, defeated the #3 seed from Principia. They were set to play the #4 seed from Webster later that day. Number two doubles, Jesse Shaw and Ryan Haas, played their semi-final match the previous day. Their next match would be for third place against the #3 seed from Webster. They would lose that match 3 – 8, and take fourth place in the tournament. Then we had number three doubles, Jon Allen and Austin Young, who were also playing for third place against Webster. After starting down 1 – 4 in the match, they fought back to tie the match at 6 all. They would eventually lose to Webster 6 – 8.

Then we put on the consolation singles matches. Jesse Shaw was playing number three singles and was playing for third place against the #2 seed from Westminster. He won that match 4 – 6, 6 – 3, (10 – 4). Michael Read was playing number five singles and was playing agains the #4 seed from Principia. After a long match he would lose 6 – 7 (5 – 7), 7 – 6 (7 – 2), (6 – 10). Todd Ganton was to play against last year’s first team all conference at number six singles. This guy didn’t lose a match all year last year, and had only lost one match this year. Todd was able to pull off the victory in straight sets, he won 7 – 6 (7 – 5), 6 – 4. Then they put on the championship matches. Joe Newlin was to play against the #1 seed form Westminster (They same guy he played last year and lost in three sets). He was unable to win this match as he fell short losing 3 – 6, 3 – 6. Ian Wolf was in the championships for number two singles. He was playing against the #4 seed from Principia, and he defeated him 6 – 2, 6 – 2. Lastly, Ryan Haas, was playing for first place at number four singles. He was playing against the #1 seed from Westminster. The scores do not really show how well Haas played, the kid he was playing against didn’t miss many shots and was playing one of the best matches of his career. Haas lost 1 – 6, 0 – 6.

After the singles championships were over, they put on the doubles championship game. Joe Newlin and Ian Wolf won this match last year 8 – 4 against Westminster. They were looking to defend their title at number one doubles. They were playing against the #4 seed from Webster who was able to knock off the #1 seed from Westminster. The match was held at serve until 7 – 7 when Joe and Ian were able to break Webster to put them ahead 8 – 7. Ian Wolf was able to serve the match out and give them their second consecutive title at number one doubles.
