]]> Giving Hearts Day is February 9th, 2023. Giving Hearts Day is a 24-hour fundraising event benefiting more than 475 charities throughout North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, including your GOD’S CHILD Project!

This year, with the help of our generous donors’ matching funds, our goal is to reach $50,000 to help thousands of children receive a vital education, food to eat, and a safe home where they can grow and work to achieve their dreams.

Every Giving Heart Counts!

  • $20 can provide emergency food for a child for one week
  • $50 can provide tuition and school supplies for a child for one month
  • $100 can provide a medical examination for a child rescued from sexual exploitation

In our February newsletter, we shared with you Adriana Germain’s heart-wrenching story about four-month-old Gabriella needing to be rushed from Casa Jackson to a bigger hospital due to breathing issues.

Adriana, Gabriella, and the young infant’s grandmother were running out of options…there were no police, ambulances, or firetrucks that could assist them. The only way to get to the hospital was to take a Tuk Tuk, a three-wheeled motorcycle that gives rides for hire.

The grandmother said she had no money for the Tuk Tuk. All they needed was two dollars.

“Imagine…the Project’s cars were gone, and the police, ambulance, and firetruck didn’t come. The grandmother didn’t have 15 quetzals to pay for a Tuk Tuk,” Germain said. “If this baby and her grandmother had not been at Casa Jackson, Gabriella would have died. Sometimes, a very small sum of money can make all the difference between life and death.”

Gabriella survived and is back at Casa Jackson. Adriana had the two dollars, and with it, she saved a life.

Two dollars. That’s all that was standing between Gabriella and the rest of her life. Just two dollars.

Any donation you make, be it two dollars or two hundred dollars, makes a difference in the lives of children who are fighting every day for a better life.

The kids are headed back to school this month! Soon, our classrooms will be filled with many, many children and educators, all ready to get back to work. Education is invaluable to the kids, and it’s the first step in helping them to achieve their dreams!

Since our founding in 1991, The GOD’S CHILD Project is proud to say that we have raised and educated over 80,000 boys and girls…and we have no plans to stop anytime soon.

In Guatemala, we are restructuring our schools in an effort to DOUBLE the number of impoverished children we educate. Through strategic partnerships, we anticipate increasing these program services to the poor without increasing our bottom-line expenses.

2020 will be a year of growth for your GOD’S CHILD Project. Not only will we double the number of children we’re educating, we also plan to double the number of hospitalized baby-patients we care for at Casa Jackson Hospital for Malnourished Children.

In addition to the 2020 increase in services provided to children through strategic partnership development, we also plan to increase the number of extremely poor people to whom we provide medical assistance, dental care, and crisis counseling intervention.

Connecticut Teacher Bikes Across US To Raise Money For Guatemalan Families In Need

High school teacher takes philanthropic bike trip across the USA to raise awareness about ways to help Central American children and families in need.

WATERTOWN, CONNECTICUT, USA, July 9, 2019 – High school teacher David Dethlefs set off on the final leg of his philanthropic bike journey across the USA to raise awareness about volunteer and funding opportunities to help Central American children and families living in extreme poverty. For 13 years David volunteered and chaperoned teenagers every summer through The GOD’S CHILD Project, a charity providing critical humanitarian aid for the past 28 years in Guatemala and abroad.

David is a teacher at Taft, a prep school in Watertown, Connecticut. Last summer, he was preparing to bring a group of students who volunteered to build homes for families in need to Guatemala, as he had done 13 years before. Unfortunately, the trip had to be cancelled due to a US State Dept. reclassification.

But that wasn’t enough to deter David’s desire to help others. While some people might have used the sudden spare time to take a vacation – after all, the trip was set to take place during summer break – David decided to launch a campaign to bike across America to raise awareness and funds for the children helped by the charity The GOD’S CHILD Project. The organization runs specialized schools to help children who otherwise wouldn’t have education access, a hospital dedicated to malnourished children, clinics and shelters as well as building homes and distributing vital supplies to Guatemalan families in need.

David completed the first leg of the trip last summer, biking from Washington state to Fargo, North Dakota. This summer he will complete the second part of the trip by biking from Connecticut to Fargo, North Dakota once again. He plans to arrive in Fargo around August 1st.

A HISTORY OF GIVING
Connecticut’s Taft School has a long track record of charitable activity, including annual trips to Guatemala in service of The GOD’S CHILD Project.

Over the past decade, 134 Taft students have traveled to Guatemala with the help of 12 faculty members as chaperones. Together, they have built 39 homes for families in need – enough to shelter 200+ parents, grandparents and children. They also handed out food to the homeless, cared for suffering or abandoned children at Casa Jackson Hospital for Malnourished Children (www.CasaJackson.org), and much more in what the students describe as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

]]> Philadelphia teens build 40 houses for Guatemalan families in need

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 18th, 2019: Sixteen teenage volunteers and sixteen adults from Philadelphia are in Guatemala this week to build their 40th house for families in need as part of Philly kids’ organization Teens Inc, in partnership with The GOD’S CHILD Project.

Teens Inc, which works with local Philadelphia teens and pre-teens to promote charitable activity and community, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with a special humanitarian aid trip that unites the organization’s current members with those that built their first charitable Guatemalan home back in 2009. The 16 teenage volunteers will be accompanied by four chaperones and 12 Teens Inc alumni.

Philadelphia teens to the rescue

More than half of the people in Guatemala live below the poverty line. For families with young children, this often means having no choice but to sleep on wet dirt floors, resulting in otherwise preventable illnesses and medical problems.

Every year, volunteers from Teens Inc travel to build new homes for these families using materials donated by the organization’s volunteer network.

Each house takes 3 days to complete. On the last day of the build, the home is ‘gifted’ to the family during a ceremony at which mothers and builders alike are moved to tears.

Over 1,000 homes have been built through The GOD’S CHILD Project to date – and soon, more than 40 of these houses will have been built by volunteers from Teen’s Inc.

Teens Inc began its signature international service trip to Antigua, Guatemala in 2009. Every summer since, the club’s members have spent 9–10 days in Guatemala immersing themselves in hands-on humanitarian aid projects and vacation adventures.

Teens and chaperones live with middle-class families, sharing meals, practicing Spanish, and interacting with locals. The trip involves traveling to Lake Atitlan, a very scenic area, and exposure to the Mayan-Latino culture. The kids spend the 5 months leading up to the trip researching Guatemala, team building, and fundraising.

Teens Inc works in partnership with The GOD’S CHILD Project (GCP) to give vulnerable families an opportunity to become self-sufficient, educated, and healthy members of society.

As well as building homes and distributing donations to the community, here are just some of the ways in which Philadelphia teens are volunteering to help families in Guatemala during this year’s trip:

  • Providing care at Casa Jackson Hospital for Malnourished Children, the only hospital in Central America dedicated completely to free inpatient care for severely malnourished children
  • Helping at Santa Madre Homeless Shelter, a safe place to sleep for abused and abandoned children, battered women, and families fleeing natural disasters
  • Handing out food to 1,000+ people in need at the weekly GCP Food Distribution, including war widows, abandoned mothers, and the elderly
  • Helping at Dreamer Center School for impoverished children, who often have no access to running water, electricity, or school supplies
  • Helping at the Vista Hermosa Center School, designed for older students who have missed out on education due to being in the child labor force

Fill the Truck – Donate Medical Supplies For Children In Need!

The GOD’S CHILD Project has been helping care for orphaned, abandoned, and ill children in the world for 28 years. This year, we have partnered with a shipper to help send medical supplies to Central America, Africa, and India to continue our efforts to help the poorest children and families in the world receive care. This campaign effort between The GOD’S CHILD Project and North Dakota natives will help make healthcare accessible for some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

Until July 31, 2019, The GOD’S CHILD Project office in Bismarck, North Dakota will be accepting the following medical donations for world-wide distribution. Please scroll down to find supply list below.

Volunteer Your Time

On July 31, 2019 we will need volunteers at our Bismarck, North Dakota office to help pack and fill a truck with donated medical supplies to be distributed to 3 different continents around the world.

Our office is located at 721 Memorial Highway, Bismarck, 58504.
