About Mario: Mario comes from the nearby town of San Mateo Milpas Altas. He was referred to Casa Jackson by a local hospital for treatment of severe Kwashiorkor malnutrition. His mother wanted to be by his side throughout his recovery, so she stays with him at Casa Jackson. She has several other children who support her decision to stay with Mario until he comes home and they can all be together again.

About Cristina: Cristina was referred to Casa Jackson after her concerned parents brought her to a local clinic to treat a respiratory illness. She has a severe case of Kwashiorkor malnutrition. Cristina’s first day at Casa Jackson was also her one year birthday, and a celebration of a new beginning. Though she was quite upset her first few days of adjusting to Casa Jackson and was struggling with her bottle feedings, she is making progress every day. Unfortunately, due to her malnutrition, Cristina is very small for her age and developmentally delayed, but we look forward to seeing her growth in the next few months!

Department: Communications and Grants

Reports to: Director of Benefactor Services

Overall responsibility: This position is about 60% grants and 40% public relations. Prepare grant proposals and award submissions, research potential funding sources and gaining familiarity with The GOD’S CHILD Project’s programs, goals and financial needs. Prepare and publish written materials about in-country events and activities, support and expand existing online and social media presence, and help coordinate monthly donor communications.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Creating and implementing a comprehensive publication schedule
  • Create, design, edit, and disseminate promotional and informational materials
  • Grow organization’s presence and participation on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter
  • Praise groups and individuals who have donated time or money by using their local media outlets to tell their story
  • Document the organization through words, photographs, and video
  • Maintain and expand new website concept to encompass the organization more accurately and wholly
  • Maintain and expand list of local and international media contacts
  • Assist other departments in their need for materials, information, images, or publicity
  • Gain a complete understanding of the programs via interviews, research, surveys, meetings, etc.
  • Perform in-depth research into grant-making and award-giving organizations, including guidelines, requirements, and deadlines
  • Write grant applications that display meticulous grammar and spelling, including creating feasible and realistic budgets in-line with organization needs
  • Ensure that projects and departments adhere to each grant-making association’s guidelines
  • Maintain and expand organized database of grant-making and award-giving organizations
  • Oversee disbursement of grant/award money and monitor progress of project, including submitting any progress reports required by organizations funding projects
  • Ensure consistence with vocabulary, facts, and anecdotes used by the organization

Consults with: Volunteer Coordinator, Director of Social Services, US Office Staff, Department Coordinators, ServiceTeam Coordinator, Social Workers

Terms of employment: 24 months, full-time volunteer position with a living stipend comparable to local staff salaries

Qualifications:

  • Fluent in English and Spanish preferred
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Journalism, grant writing, marketing, communications, or other writing experience
  • Analytical and persuasive, with ability to seek creative solutions to funding problems
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, analyze and evaluate a variety of data
  • Able to work effectively in team environment
  • Photography and videography skills preferred, including use of editing software like Photoshop
  • Demonstrated ability to work under strict deadlines
  • Highly-organized, independent worker
  • Understanding of poverty-related issues in Central America preferred
  • Motivation to create lasting change in a well-established NGO setting

About Marlón: Marlón is the only child of a single parent home. His young mother stayed with him at Casa Jackson so she could be there to constantly care for him. It was her first time away from home, but the other mothers, nurses, and staff at Casa Jackson gave her lots of support and helped her feel at ease. After just 3 weeks, Marlón had gained almost 3 lbs. and was healthy and ready to head home with his loving mother and helpful grandfather.

Update: Marlón was discharged from Casa Jackson on March 3, 2012 at a healthy weight of 9 lbs. 9 oz.

About Jenifer: Jenifer was with us last year and has now returned. Her parents were concerned that she was not gaining weight and growing as she should for her age. She is only at 77% of her optimal weight for height. She is a sweet little girl and beginning to adjust to being at Casa Jackson again.  Jenifer is moderately malnourished, but with the specialized medical care she receives from our nurses and staff, as well as the support and education her family is receiving, we hope to see her healthy and on her way home again soon.

About Vanessa: Vanessa was with us at Casa Jackson last year and went home on January 12, 2012, healthy and happy at 3 months old with a weight of just over 10 lbs. Her mother is unable to give maternal milk and the parents have lacked the education necessary to care nutritionally for Vanessa. After she went home, she was not gaining weight as she should and her parents brought her back to Casa Jackson out of their worry and concern. Though Vanessa does not appear severely malnourished, she has a type of malnutrition called Kwashiorkor, which causes her to retain fluids, causing her to look plump, when in reality she is lacking vital nutrients.

UPDATE: Vanessa went home on April 14, 2012 at a healthy weight of 13.11 lbs.

About Josselyn: Josselyn is an only child and her father works as a janitor making only about $125 a month. Josselyn and her parents live with her maternal grandparents and most of what they own was given to them secondhand. Josselyn was born with a normal birth weight but came to us severely malnourished and behind in her development. We are hoping to see her learn how to walk while she is with us! She is adjusting to life at Casa Jackson and we have been seeing her cute smile more and more lately.

The father is not present, but the grandparents have generously offered to financially support Javier and make sure he gets proper care and schooling. The grandparents also take care of and financially support 8 other grandchildren.

About Luis: Luis is our sweet 12-year-old who came to us severely malnourished with a very sad story. His mother passed away in labor sometime within the past six months. His father, who has children with multiple women and doesn’t take responsibility for any of them, abandoned Luis in the street near his home. Luis lived there for several months until his uncles found him and brought him to the police, who brought him here. Luis had special needs prior to being abandoned, although due to the severe malnutrition he has suffered in the past 6 months, it’s difficult to know how severe they were. It is possible that his impairments were exacerbated by chronic malnutrition throughout his childhood, but his uncles report that he was well-loved and cared for when his mother was alive. We will likely never know the full story. What we do know is that Luis has already surprised us with his abilities, and will continue to do so. He can take steps and climb stairs with help, and while he will never be “normal,” he is absolutely capable of much more than he looks like he’s capable of. Please continue to shower him with love, attention, and affection… Include him in play with the other kids as best you can, etc. He really needs our love and support!
