AFTER having to stop a raging bull dead in its tracks, blessing a few dozen abandoned animals seems like a breeze.

Venerable Yana Dolma from the Arya Tara Gold Coast Buddhist Centre will be sending a healing and calming wishes on the cats and dogs of the Animal Welfare League tomorrow, between 5.30pm and 8pm.

Beloved pet baited - a cruel and painful death

RSPCA Qld is appealing for help in finding the person who baited Bronx, a nine month old Dachshund, at Jodie Court in Mermaid Waters on August 14th.

The nine month old de-sexed male was seen in the backyard eating what appeared to be mince in the early hours of the morning. Knowing that she hadn’t given this to him, Bronx’s owner ran out and found what appeared to be white powder mixed in with the mince. Within ten minutes Bronx started to convulse and was rushed to the vet. Within 40 minutes of arriving he had a further six fits and died. Bronx didn’t stand a chance.

Last Friday pathology reports handed to the RSPCA indicated that he had been poisoned with an extremely high dose of strychnine. This would also have proved fatal to a child and possibly even an adult. Humans and other animals can be poisoned by inhalation, swallowing or absorption through the eyes or mouth.

“Strychnine produces some of the most dramatic and painful symptoms of any known toxic reaction,” said RSPCA Qld Inspector Sommer Heath Crilley. “The road to eventual death is excruciating.”

Gold Coast City Council has implemented a new Animal Management Legislation that requires all breeders of cats and dogs to obtain permits, and follow a Code of Practice.

The new legislation requires anybody who owns a cat or dog and intends to breed, including hobby breeders and commercial breeding establishments, to hold a current breeder permit.

Arthritis in Dogs …. What Can You Do?

Successful arthritis treatment can do wonders for a dog’s quality

of life. Frequently the signs are simply ascribed to “old

age” and only once your dog is on treatment do you

realise how much arthritis pain was affecting them.

General stiffness, slow to get up or lie down, and slowing or dragging on walks are key signs. Arthritic dogs battle on stairs and often can no longer jump up into the car.

Best results are achieved with a combination of treatments. There are 3 major areas - Weight Loss, Controlled Exercise and Medications. Carrying excess weight makes it harder to cope, burdens the painful joints and accelerates the damage. Don’t simply try reducing what you feed – consider a specialised weight loss diet. With controlled calories and special added ingredients such as L-Carnitine and Lysine, you’ll be amazed with the results and your dog won’t be constantly hungry.

Exercising within your dogs abilities is crucial. Calculate your walks to end BEFORE the point where your dog starts to lag behind. As they improve they’ll cope with longer distances. Little and often is key. Aim to exercise daily – it’s a case of use it or loose it. Deep water swimming is an excellent exercise - it takes the weight off painful joints.

Anti-inflammatory medications will make a radical improvement. We can help you select the best brand for your dog. This is often based on the form they come in, as well as your budget. Common forms are syrup added to food, chewable tablets as well as traditional capsules or tablets.

Anti-inflammatories work both as direct pain killers, as well as by stopping the inflammation of arthritis itself – hence they actually treat the problem rather than just masking the symptoms. Additionally we can improve the lubrication in joints, help control inflammation and change
the course of the disease with Pentosan injections. Once initiated,
some dogs may only need an injection once every 3 months.

Glucosamine is a fantastic supplement that helps control arthritis. Glucosamine works by keeping cartilage, the shock absorber of joints, healthy. It comes in many forms and it is best to look for a product that also contains Chondroitin, as well as ingredients such as MSN and Vitamin C. We prefer to use products that DO NOT come from Shark Cartilage. Green Lipped Muscle Extract is also useful. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory, and mostly comes in a powder form. Fortunately there are now several excellent Joint Diets available that include many of these supplements. Sensibly they also focus on preventing obesity. And of course the little things help too. Keep them warm in the cooler weather and provide soft, non-slip bedding.

So through a combination of weight control, tailored exercise, special joint diet and anti-inflammatories, your dog can enjoy a new lease on life and win back their mobility. On Saturday June 19th… I drove the 3 hour round-trip to Hamilton in Brisbane to become certified in Pet First Aid (aka Pet Tech PetSaver™ Pet CPR & First Aid).

My motivation to do this course was personal not just professional. I’ve been searching for quite sometime now a ‘hand on’ first aid course for “the average everyday pet owner”. Someone, like me, who cares for their pets deeply however isn’t necessarily wanting to do a full animal attendant, vet nurse or other similar course.

I had returned from a lovely House Sit with a client (hello Charlie Buttons!) … and was taking out the garbage.

In my unit complex there is a huge tree and garden area in the front of all the units. There was some movement near the fence (between my unit complex and the next one) in ‘my’ garden. It took me a second to realise.. hang on here.. they look like Guinea Pigs !

What I found amusing with this video wasn't just the fact that the Dog was reacting to the baby crying... watch the baby's reaction. That was the humourous part for me: it shut up. So I guess the moral of the story here is if you want to stop your baby crying: get the dog to start howling (aka "crying")

House Sitter Wanted – How to Find a House Sitter

If you are one of the many home owners that has been the victim of burglary, or you are the owner of a pet with special needs (aren’t they all?), or you simply worry what will happen to your home and/or pet(s) in your absence, you know what it is like to be unable to completely relax and enjoy your hard earned holiday.

You may have arrived home to the aftermath of irresponsible relatives who were supposed to be taking care of your home in your absence and haven’t quite lived up to their end of the bargain. You could have forked out hundreds, if not thousands for pet boarding only to be unable to stop worrying about how they are the whole time, or for them to come back different pets, perhaps even with ticks or fleas (or worse).

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

I am one of the many people out there who are willing to make it their full time jobs to keep your home clean, love your pets (almost) as much as you do, make sure your home looks ‘lived in’ at all times, all this and more for (what I feel) is a small price to pay per day. I am willing to provide daily reports (email, sms, phone calls) about the kids with tails (or fins, or feathers, or scales), chat with your neighbours as if they were my own and forward your mail to wherever you happen to be living it up on the planet.

No longer do you need to lie awake in your hotel room fretting your skittish elderly cat isn’t coming in to eat at night, because you have chosen a cat lover with experience medicating cats due to having to do so with her own. Someone is there to make sure your dogs get their little jackets on if it starts to rain when out walking, because you have chosen someone who has had previous clients with similar needs.

“Who is this angels of mercy?” I hear you cry. “How do I get this wonderful person to come and take care of my wonderful home and precious pets while I am away?!”

With the advent of the internet making this world a whole lot smaller, you are now able to communicate via the magic of my website, facebook, twitter or email and get in touch with me to fulfill your needs.

When you use my day stay, overnight or live in house sitter services in return, I give you the opportunity to fully appreciate your holiday, join in that Conga line and fully enjoy yourself to the best of your abilities!

It is the least I can do !

Try this. Calculate how much you think it will cost you to pay each week if you were to hire a pet sitter to visit twice a day for 30mins or longer (or the fuel + time costs involved in having to transport your animals to boarding facilities or kennels). This can be quite expensive for multiple pet households! It is part of the territory for an experienced house sitter (like myself) to take care of everything and I am more than happy to do so. It becomes my full time job as your house sitter to take this weight off your mind and ensure the highest level of security, safety and wellbeing of your home and pets.

As a professional house sitter I have police clearances, my driver’s license available for inspection, a contract you must sign and references (available upon request) all ready to go so I can do what I am there for – to make sure you have absolute peace of mind. When I house sit I try to leave it as you left it (like I have not even been there!) and to love your precious pets in the way I want Marnie to be treated while I'm away. I owe you the peace of mind you seek. Without this, there would be no need for house sitters (like me) and with it the opportunity for great adventure (for you).

Each house sit has been a new and interesting episode in a way of life I would never have had the chance to experience! At the end of each house sit no-one really knows how to thank one another. The homeowner always feels like we have done them a great service and provided valuable peace of mind, I couldn’t be more thankful because I get to have my own mini-holiday and be surrounded by their wonderful pets.

So if you’ve ever had a bad experience that’s caused you to wake on your holiday in a cold sweat, have a furry kid that is a little mischievous (or precious to you) or you feel tied to the house in any way there is a shining light at the end of the tunnel! I'm available to house sit for 3 - 5 hours during the day, overnight or "live in" (24 hours) within South Brisbane, Gold Coast (yes all of the Gold Coast) and just "over the border" (Tweed region).

So don’t be afraid to leave home, get a house sitter. Your pets, plants, gardens and relatives will appreciate it!

Whilst cats (or at least mine do!) spend most of their time sleeping or napping, just like dogs they require MENTAL and PHYSICAL stimulation... no matter their age. Hello to all my wonderful clients both new and those who have been "with" me since I took over Gold Coast Pet Sitting in October/November 2008 !!

To all those clients who have me booked for pet sitting and/or dog walking in March - YES !!! We are still all confirmed for those dates this month of March. The following applies from April 1st (and no this isn't an April Fool's Joke) onwards. Please forgive me for any inconvenience caused.

After speaking with my business advisors recently, I have decided to take a more specialised approach to my business. This will mean quality customer service for all my clients and even hopefully a better experience for everyone including the wonderful animals in my care.

The article is very well written, in my opinion. For those who adore Caesar Milan, it might be a good read. Times change, as does research... thus those of us who deal with dogs as owners or as professionals in any capacity should keep "on top" of these changes.

This is where using food as the drive mechanism to initiate training or behaviour modifications is the standard "go to" for most trainers. Dogs are more like water-ed down versions of wolf puppies who rely on the "alpha male and female" (who are their mum and dad).
