In 2025, GDG Vienna is starting a new event series called Accessibility Webinar Series as part of the BuildingForEveryone events by Google Developers Group , hosted by Julia Undeutsch 💫 .

Julia is a Google Developer Expert for Web Technologies since autumn 2023 with the main goal of reaching as many developers as possible to make the online world more accessible.

The first event "Getting Started for Designing for Web Accessibility" is kind of an introduction for everyone who just got started out with accessibility in design, development, or in general. Later on in the series, we will dive more into coding, with real live examples, testing together and more.

Google goes Serverless - Next '17 Follow-Up

Cloud Next '17 had many great announcements, and one of them was that Google Cloud Functions are now in Open Beta.

In a short overview presentation we were discussing what Google Cloud Functions are, how they are invocated and their pricing.

In addition to triggers like HTTP or Google Pub/Sub, there is also the possibility to link them to Firebase. In the second presentation László - a member of GDG Vienna but also organizer of Serverless Vienna meetup group - showcased using Cloud Functions together with Firebase, including a review of the developer experience.

And finally Nik Graf talked about the big picture in his presentation: what is serverless, what offerings exist from Amazon in comparison, and how does the "Serverless Framework" help to abstract the differences in the vendor-specific configuration.

And if you wanted to try out some stuff, there are two good news. First, the free trial period for Google Cloud has been extended to 12 month from previously 3 months. And, there is a new set of tutorials available which always include free cloud usage for them: Qwiklabs Tutorials

We were watching together the Cloud Next '17 keynote of day 2 (infrastructure & technical announcements) in Raum D / Quartier21 (Museumsquartier).
Some very cool announcements were made, including:

TensorFlow Dev Summit - Viewing Party

We were meeting for a viewing party of the keynote and the first couple of sessions from the TensorFlow Dev Summit 2017.
A mixed audience, some already working with TensorFlow and others more interested in it, we learned about the release of TensorFlow 1.0, including the tf.keras module, offering compatibility with Keras, another popular high-level neural networks library.

Our first meetup in 2017 was again in the Google office in Vienna. A big Thank You to Google for the room, drinks & snacks!

We started with a "What's New at Google" slideshow - a collection of developer related stuff recently announced or made available by Google. Android Things, Flutter developer experience, Grumpy and more stuff have been mentioned there.

In the main presentation we were talking about developing with API.AI as well as using the Actions SDK, including a live demonstration of the agend on Google Home.

And then we were talking about our plans for the future. We will have a Next '17 Extended - Vienna event on 9 March, a Women Techmakers Vienna event on 11 March, and Google I/O Extended Vienna on 17 May.

Android Study Jam 2016

Last year we had together with AndroidHeads Vienna we had the first Android Study Jam - online course material in self study, combined with on-site mentoring and coaching.

This year we will have again an Android Study Jam, in the form of a two-day-long Bootcamp.
The main idea will be the same, an online course enriched with on-site components. This year we will focus on the on-site experience, the content will be targeted for beginners in Android development, and it will be concentrated in one weekend.

DevFest Vienna 2015

DevFests are large-scale community events following the tradition of Google DevFests and managed by GDGs around the world.
DevFest Vienna is coming back this year on Saturday 21 November and Sunday 22 November. It is jointly organized with the Java Student User Group and AndroidHeads Vienna.

Saturday we will have presentations and talks on current developer topics in the area of mobile and web, hosted at the University of Technology in Vienna.
Sunday is a Google Beacons Hackathon at Raum D / quartier21.

It is this time of the year again!

Google I/O is every year the most important developer conference for everyone dealing with Google Technology: be it Android, Google Cloud offerings, or one of the many Google APIs.

If you cannot attend Google I/O live in San Francisco, then Google I/O Extended is the best way for you to follow the news and to connect with other interested developers.
Part viewing party and part community building, Google I/O Extended is a free event focused on the live stream of Google I/O.

We will provide pizza, drinks & popcorn at our Google I/O Extended event in Vienna @Stockwerk. As much as possible, Google+ hangouts will allow you to enter in direct conversation with the developers in San Francisco.

April Meetup: MongoDB vs neo4j, App Engine Endpoints, Firebase

After two months of Android Study Group we were putting more focus on the cloud offerings of Google and related technology.

Marc talked about the differences between MongoDB and neo4j, two NoSQL offerings which can easily be used in a Java or JVM-based application, but also many other languages.

Helmuth made a short presentation on App Engine Endpoints using Python. And the last talk was about Firebase, a JSON-based NoSQL cloud storage with offline capabilities, many client libraries, and realtime sync.

Women Techmakers Vienna

In celebration of today's International Women's Day, Google has initiated the world-wide Women Techmakers events series.
And Vienna is taking part with Women Techmakers Vienna on 15 March at Stockwerk!
This event is open for everyone to attend, including men! It is about calling attention to women who work in tech, research tech, teach tech knowledge,... and about inspiring women who follow in their footsteps.

GDG Vienna 2013 review and 2014 preview

The year 2013 was a really amazing year for us at GDG Vienna. We had a lot of events and meet-ups, alongside with hackathons and cooperation with many companies and user groups.

We started in January with an "Introduction to Ingress” held by Anna Kastlunger and a nice tech talk from Sergii Kauk on Google APIs. Followed by February with a tech talk from Gerwin Sturm on Google Cloud Endpoints. It was again Gerwin Sturm who gave in March a talk about Google Glass and the mirror API. Nik Graf from blossom.io reported on his experiences with Dart. And we welcomed Aygul Zagidullina on hangouts who shared with us some Google Glass experience.
We organized also an AR Drone Hackathon where Kariem Hussein, Timea Turdean and Marc Edem formed a team that worked on controlling the drone with gestures recognized via a webcam, and Gerwin Sturm, Anna Kastlunger, and Shadi Abani worked in their team with the navigation data provided by the drone to give some visual feedback about orientation, altitude and battery state inside of the Chrome App.
We organized the Google I/O Extended viewing which was one of our greatest event with an attendance of almost 100 people. As in previous years we met in a nice place in Vienna to watch the announcements made at this year's Google I/O - this year it was The Hub. Some of the organizers were in San Francisco and provided us with nice pictures and live reports from there as well!
In June we had another Google Glass experience with Sergii Kauk and a session on “Responsive Design with GWT” by Timea Turdean. The August meetup with the “Introduction to Graph database” by Marc Edem was also an amazing session.
The next big event: DevFest Vienna! It was a great 3 days events. In cooperation with the Java Student User Group and the AndroidHeads Vienna we have organized an amazing festivity for developers in mobile, cloud, social & web, including an awesome after-party powered by Cenarion - made possible by the support of Willhaben, PayPal and Google. Other sponsors were Indoors, Tailored Apps, Codiqa, O'Reilly and Manning Publication. We had the chance to have great speakers and presenters together with time for networking and relaxing. The hackathon on Sunday was also a great success where gifted developers created great applications.
We ended the year with the Android Native on Intel - a joint event with AndroidHeads Vienna sponsored by Intel, with Marc Edem presenting on Intel optimizations for Android and Kariem Hussein talking about Cloud Endpoints in Java Google App Engine.

2014 has already started with the amazing Dart Flight School Vienna event. And more is planned already:

September Meetup: Graph Database basics

At our monthly meetup of September, we had a presentation from +Marc Edem who gives us some basics fondamentals on graph database and how it works.

Based on a NoSQL thechnology like Google Big Tables, or Dynamo of Amazon, Graph database has a pure advantage toward common relational database which is its time performance and the speed of execution of queries on really big data.

An example is where normal relational database query can take up to 2000 ms to execute, graph database need only 2ms which is extremely fast compared to the relational databse.

Graph Database is developped by +Neo4j (Neo Technology), which CEO is +Emil Eifrem .

DevFest Vienna 2013

DevFests are large-scale community events following the tradition of Google DevFests and managed by GDGs around the world.
DevFest Vienna is coming back this year from Friday 18 October till Sunday 20 October. It is jointly organized with the Java Student User Group and AndroidHeads Vienna. It will be even larger and more exciting than last years, starting on Friday afternoon with hands-on workshops and Saturday having presentations and talks on current developer topics in the area of mobile and web, hosted at the University of Technology in Vienna. Sunday it will have a great OpenHack-styled hackathon at Sektor5. See the agenda for the details!
